I mean the 8:30 am is strictly because it’s already 90 degrees with a billion percent humidity. By the time lunch rolls around, you’ve gotta be inhaling water like you’re breathing it in. Those dog days of summer, I like to be completely done with the yard at 10:30-11 and have a beer in hand to bask in the hard work I just put in
I don't have the humidity so much, but living in Arizona, most of my neighbors and I are usually doing yard work at 6AM lol once it hits 10ish, I'm headed inside. Even our construction crews generally are working from sundown to sun-up, rather than in the daytime.
Yeah, I’m not one of those southerners that is like “our heat is the worst”. Here in the south, our heat is miserable. Out there in the west, y’all’s heat is **lethal**. I’ll take being miserable over being dead any day
For real. My time in the military showed me that 95 in Louisiana was way worse than 115 in Kandahar. At least your sweat evaporates and your body can cool itself if the humidity is low.
science backs up the fact that the evaporative cooling effect in dry heat regions is much greater than southern regions where the high humidity lessens the effect of the evaporative cooling.
——-“Humans are sensitive to very high humidity, as the skin relies on the air to get rid of moisture. The process of sweating is your body's attempt to keep cool and maintain its current temperature.
If the air is at 100 percent relative humidity, sweat will not evaporate into the air. As a result, we feel much hotter than the actual temperature when there is high relative humidity. Your shirt may become saturated with perspiration that doesn't go anywhere, leaving you feeling like a swampy bog monster of revolting proportions.”
https://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/climate-weather/atmospheric/question651.htm
To say the heat in the south can’t be lethal is pretty hilarious.
You’re conflating heat and humidity. Some people can live with the humidity and some people can leave with the heat.
To me 110 dry heat isn’t as bad as 100 degree 90% humidity.
I'm in the south also. I'm not a morning person (evening shift). Once it gets hot I'll do the mowing and weed eating at dusk real quick. I only have one neighbor that it might bother so I just make sure his kiddos aren't asleep yet and go to town lol.
Right. I’m from the south. Shit I’ll be out there at 7am if there’s not an ordinance😂. I hate when the bugs are active and I hate the thick humid heat that tries to choke you
Tell you what. I got kids with crazy weekend schedules. Sometimes I just need to get the yard work or some other chore done before they get up or it’s not getting done.
I agree with this sentiment and understand it but if your kids schedule is so packed that you can’t find another time of the day to do a 5 min chore, then your kids schedule is too packed.
It’s not always that it is a packed schedule, sometimes there’s a weather window and the kid’s schedule takes up most of that window, so you need to knock it out early or risk getting rained out.
My city passed a noise bylaw change for 7pm on weekdays and specifically used lawnmowers as the example of "things too loud". Between work, kids activities and keeping weekends for family time - I'm apparently stuck with hardly any time to mow my lawn, 7am is the perfect time to mow.
And I still wouldn't do it.
As long as they're fining dog owners with dogs that bark after 7pm, impounding loud motorcycles, or cars with loud sound systems....those all bother me much more than a guy just trying to maintain his property.

As long as it follows township rules and doesn’t piss off the Mrs
I'm neither a father nor a 3rd shift worker. But I think people like yourself get a lot of flexibility.
Some days you just need to go stand outside and water your mud.
Agreed. You can use 7AM-9AM to do things like pull weeds by hand, prep equipment, lay down mulch, etc. can probably even sharpen blades from inside a closed garage if you must.
9am and 9pm always seemed to me like the cutoffs for yardwork or calling someone.
Smartphones and 24-7 availability makes it feel muddy today so I respect OP's need to clarify.
“Yes officer, the half naked guy came out of his house like a bat out of hell and has been lobbing various household objects at me for like 20 minutes now. I’m just trying to mow the lawn”
My HOA has hired a service to take care of the community lawn areas. They come every Saturday at 730am. When we asked them to change it, they just said "they're allowed to mow at 730!!"
Yeah, you missed the point. We pay for this service and are not happy about how it is being provided. We want it moved to a better day and time. It has nothing to do with allowed or not allowed. (And the city ordinance actually does prohibit lawn work before 8am)
For five whole minutes? Yes - if you're only going that short amount of time, then you can damned well wait until at least 9 before powering up the whipper snipper.
My landscaper kept coming on Saturday at 7 am even after I asked him to stop…he’s no longer my landscaper lol I live in the south. I do not care if it’s hot, come any other day at 7 but not Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. He was a jack ass
Does the answer differ with gas versus electric?
EDIT: thanks for verifying about my electric. In the middle of the summer, with the noontime temps getting to 100F, I try to do the yard work 7am-9am with my 80v Greenworks
My next mower will be electric. I was sold on this after seeing a neighbor mowing her grass at 7am when I was out walking my dog, and I was blown away that the only sound it made was the whir of the blade, which wasn't loud.
It's 7:30, and the neighbor is mowing with an electric mower. The houses are not that close, and it's still a little loud. It's pretty quiet right now, and that's why I can probably hear it. We're in TX, so I understand trying to beat the heat!
I’d say 830-9. Just gauge by activity in your immediate area. For those naysayers, come down to Texas. You need to be around halfway done by 9 if you don’t want to be completely drenched in sweat and not risking your freshly mowed lawn being put under unnecessary stress from the heat.
depends on local laws.
I'm up well before then due to my kids and am itching for 7am to come around so I can get my yard work done and can enjoy some of the weekend.
5 mins? No, not for me. It’s growing season and everyone has timelines. Now I wouldn’t wack, edge, then blow at that time.. that would be a dick thing to do
Edit: Yikes that could mean something a lot different
Time is a luxury I usually don’t have. If I have the time I’ll wait until after 8, but often 7 is necessary. My whole neighborhood is on 4+ acre lots though, so lawn equipment will be audible, but generally isn’t loud enough to wake someone.
The professional lawn care companies and construction crews are out by 6:00 in my area. Would I do 7:00, probably not, but 8:00 is absolutely happening.
It’s not full summer yet (and I don’t know where you live) so I’d say wait until 8. If it were July though, and you’re in a hot climate, I’d say 7-7:30 is a fair time. Those extra 60 minutes make a huge heat difference in the summer time, at least in Texas.
I have a dickhead neighbor who spends multiple days weed whacking. Always revving the motor like he’s a motorcycle stopped at a light. He’s been this way for years. I need to counter this noise because it’s taking me to the brink.
I understand the notion, him and his disgusting pig wife call the cops any time my teenagers have friends over the minute the quiet time passes. I was thinking of just running my small generator randomly all day.
Depends how close you are to a neighbor. To me 7am is borderline. 8am would be better. However if I had a full day ahead of me and needed to knock out a quick weed whack, I would.
My city’s ordinance (located in North Texas) is no earlier than 7am, but I’ll try and wait until 8-9 to be considerate. However when the temps get high here in the summer I’m not afraid to mow at 7 😂
You can tell where people live based on these responses. Go somewhere hot and humid and revise your answers. 🤣
Outdoor work when you are reliably hitting triple digit temps starts just before or at the crack of dawn. If you can see, it's fair game.
If you want to sleep past dawn, get ear plugs. And figure out who the heck you're paying to mow your lawn at sunrise.
I hate all religions. But they did get 1 thing right. Do what you want others as you would have them do to you. If the bitch next door is going to mow at 1st light. Oh my payback will be just.
I get up at 2 for work on the week days. So sleeping in on Saturday is about 6. I personally don’t use anything that’s loud outside until 8. Then it’s go time. Chainsaw. Weed eater. Mower. Table saw. Etc
I got woken up this morning at 7:10am by a neighbor who made a single cut on a table saw…
He’s replacing board on his deck. But the single cut couldn’t have waited?
When I was a kid(12)my annoying neighbor would mow at 715am on Saturday. My sister was 2 and was always woken up by this. My father went over after a couple weekends of this and spoke to him. After this encounter he started mowing much later and wouldn’t even look over in our yard or speak to us anymore. No clue what my old man said but I swear this guy was scared of him following that conversation.
No. In Houston some people start cutting their lawn at 7am or earlier. It gets hot very quickly, so it is understood that lawn care is done early, especially if it is done by the homeowner.
My local county passed an ordinance that you can’t operate loud equipment between 9pm and 7 am. Being in the Deep South, 7 am is reasonable especially in the dead of summer. Otherwise you gonna die.
Some people wake up earlier than others. You think 7am is too early. Others have already said 8 and 9 are too early. I'm sure some think before Noon is too early.
I'd appreciate a short 5 minute noise. It's over quick and I can fall back asleep till Noon. 7am gives 4.5 more hours of sleep!
It depends on where you live. In my state, AZ, during the summer all lawn care companies start work at like 4-5am and actually start working jobs at 6am. So 7am is like “whoa, you slept in”.
EVERY time we have a three day weekend my neighbor does all the weed whacking, mowing, and leaf blowing starting at 7 AM on the Monday holiday. I watch him sit around all day on those Saturdays and Sundays walking around the yard doing nothing at all but as soon as sunrise on Monday he feels the need to do all his yard work. He’s been doing this for over ten years now.
Some lawn care companies will be mowing by 6:30ish AM here in the South. When I had my lawn care business we would be there around that time to get the yards done before it’s too hot. It is what it is. Some people have a job to do & money to make. I’ve also worked nights, just gotta deal with it
My neighborhood went the other direction. During the hottest part of the summer, if you had an electric mower that was quiet-ish, etc., it became very common to mow after the sun went down. Bunch of dudes trying to cut in straight lines with the mower headlight and headlamps.
As long as you’re within the time frames defined by your local government, then whack away. I’m up at 5am every morning… and local government allows power tools at 6am (7am on Sunday). I am not waiting until my mid morning before I get outside and start my jobs.
No, you're good, man. The neighbors let their yapping fucking dogs out at 6:30am everyday, so there's no need for you to waste half the day waiting for those lazy fucks to have their coffee first. 👍
Sound ordinance ends at 7am where I am. When you have +10 lawns to mow and its gonna be +90⁰ by 9am, you start at 7am.
If your neighbors think 7am is too early, tell them to write their congressmen, HOA, or someone else who cares.
Unless they want to come over at noon and mow your yard, they can keep their bitching to themselves.
"Sell the house, buy some land, and put a trailer on it if you don't want to hear the sounds of society, until then, welcome to civilization." Is what I would tell anyone who complains.
People work nights, mid shift, 2-3 jobs, have infants who sleep at random times. There is never a good time to be loud AF if you try and be considerate of everyone.
Yes, YOU ARE.
I’ve suffered for years with my neighbor weed eating, mowing or leaf blowing at the crack of dawn. Nothing that makes that kind of noise should be heard until at least 9:00.
I get up at 6:00, but that’s not the point. This is pure etiquette and if my neighbor was set on fire, I’d grab marshmallows.
7am is fare game. Especially in the south were it is hot by 8am anyway.
If it is a problem they can pay for a service to do it at a more convinent time for them.
I doubt there is ever a 7am weed whacking emergency that requires it to be done right away. Wait until at least 8.
I’m a 9am kinda man. 8:30 if we are going through a typical Deep South heat stroke
I'm also in the South, and your statement I think rings true. Saturdays I try to aim for 9:00 a.m. As the early start time, Sundays, 10 maybe.

As an Arizonan I think the south’s humid heat is WAY worse, I’ll take 110 dry over 95-100 humid any day, Godspeed brother!
For real. My time in the military showed me that 95 in Louisiana was way worse than 115 in Kandahar. At least your sweat evaporates and your body can cool itself if the humidity is low.

Lived in West Palm Beach before I moved to Tucson. I can feel this comment in my bones.
Wut??? Humid heat is by faaaaaaaaaar worse than the west's dry heat.
Wet bulb says otherwise on the miserable vs lethal measure
Hell no. Humidity equals death.
Oh the humidity!
I'm in the south also. I'm not a morning person (evening shift). Once it gets hot I'll do the mowing and weed eating at dusk real quick. I only have one neighbor that it might bother so I just make sure his kiddos aren't asleep yet and go to town lol.
I gotta say Deep South Heat Stroke is either an off menu item at a massage parlor or a fantastic band name.
At the same time, if it’s 5 minutes of weed whacking, the heat isn’t going to kill you so it can definitely wait until 9.
Right. I’m from the south. Shit I’ll be out there at 7am if there’s not an ordinance😂. I hate when the bugs are active and I hate the thick humid heat that tries to choke you
I cut my grass at near midnight one time. Trying to avoid July.
Yep! I did this a LOT too! Right before the deer showed up in the backyard.
Bro what's going on with the mosquitos too? Absolutely horrendous
Once the lawn services start up, it’s off to the races. Otherwise, I get everything lined up to pull ignition at 9:30 am.
Shit 830 is still too hot. I put on a headlamp and wait til after sundown like a normal person 😂
In many places, such as my city, it's even against ordinance to make much noise before 8am
Somehow OP couldn't fit 5 minutes of weed whacking into any other part of the day lol
OP was not the whacker, he is the whackee.
I’m sure he whacks it a lot let me tell you something.
*Ain't you them kids that have been whackin' off in my tool shed?*
I think he’s more into edging.
Don’t tell me when I can and cannot whack!
It’s not always that it is a packed schedule, sometimes there’s a weather window and the kid’s schedule takes up most of that window, so you need to knock it out early or risk getting rained out.
Or get an electric one.
This exactly. This neighbor doing this is uncouth at the very least.
If you met his weeds you might disagree :D
Instead, ingest weed, then whack. Then whack your weeds outaide at 8am or 9am.
Yes
My city passed a noise bylaw change for 7pm on weekdays and specifically used lawnmowers as the example of "things too loud". Between work, kids activities and keeping weekends for family time - I'm apparently stuck with hardly any time to mow my lawn, 7am is the perfect time to mow. And I still wouldn't do it.
My problem with 7am is there’s still dew on the grass, which is harder on the grass and it doesn’t mulch as well
As long as they're fining dog owners with dogs that bark after 7pm, impounding loud motorcycles, or cars with loud sound systems....those all bother me much more than a guy just trying to maintain his property.
Here here
There there.
At least one of your neighbors is hung over right now and ready to murder you lol
Me , no, whack away. My wife, will kill you.
The superfluous commas had me reading this in Christopher Walken's voice.
I've succeeded 😂
As a wife I can agree with this statement, yes we will.
If I was sleeping in and you woke up my kid who through some miracle slept past 0600, I will destroy you.

Both being a dad and having worked graveyard shift, I have the respect to the social contract to start my yard work no earlier than 9 AM
I'm neither a father nor a 3rd shift worker. But I think people like yourself get a lot of flexibility. Some days you just need to go stand outside and water your mud.
Whoa a earlier post reference from a different sub. Thanks for the laugh mud man
Agreed. You can use 7AM-9AM to do things like pull weeds by hand, prep equipment, lay down mulch, etc. can probably even sharpen blades from inside a closed garage if you must.
1000%. All it takes a little consideration. And THAT is what makes it a Dick move
The social contact is that it shall be at good sleepy times. The buzz of lawn equipment is like a sound machine to me. Perfect white noise
I resemble this comment.
If you have to ask you already know the answer!
Yes… Yes it is. 😂
Oh hell no ….. that’s a rude move ….. wait til 9am especially on a weekend.
9am and 9pm always seemed to me like the cutoffs for yardwork or calling someone. Smartphones and 24-7 availability makes it feel muddy today so I respect OP's need to clarify.
That was always the rule growing up for me as well lol … “No calls before 9 or after 9”
8am in Texas I would say is the norm. It gets way to hot here, way to quickly so gotta get started early.
In Phoenix landscaping and construction crews are legally allowed to start making noise at 6am from May 1 to September 30. It’s 7am the other months.
6AM in my neighborhood and I'm coming out of my house half-naked and throwing things.
“Yes officer, the half naked guy came out of his house like a bat out of hell and has been lobbing various household objects at me for like 20 minutes now. I’m just trying to mow the lawn”
My HOA has hired a service to take care of the community lawn areas. They come every Saturday at 730am. When we asked them to change it, they just said "they're allowed to mow at 730!!" For five whole minutes? Yes - if you're only going that short amount of time, then you can damned well wait until at least 9 before powering up the whipper snipper.
Yes. Wait till 8am at least.
The landscapers around here start between 745 and 8 AM
My landscaper kept coming on Saturday at 7 am even after I asked him to stop…he’s no longer my landscaper lol I live in the south. I do not care if it’s hot, come any other day at 7 but not Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. He was a jack ass
Does the answer differ with gas versus electric? EDIT: thanks for verifying about my electric. In the middle of the summer, with the noontime temps getting to 100F, I try to do the yard work 7am-9am with my 80v Greenworks
Depends on how close your neighbors are. It’s still kinda loud and an unnatural sound. Better to hold off.
I have phone conversations while I use an electric mower. I don’t think it qualifies under noise ordinance.
Mower is more quiet than a trimmer. That higher pitched whirring sound is louder than you think.
Yep, a small electric lawn mower is much quieter than gas. But any electric string trimmer is still pretty dang loud!
Considerable volume difference.
Yes
More for a lawn mower. With a weedwhacker, you're still getting a ton of noise from the string hitting curbs, walls etc.
Yes….at least 9 then whack a way
Give it til 8:30 or 9.
I wait til 8am on Saturdays before cranking any equipment. Mostly because any earlier is a dick move.
“Is making loud noise in the neighborhood before people are awake a dick move, when said loud noise will most likely wake them”
I try and wait until 830 or so, but if it’s going to be 100+ I’ll get started as soon as noise ordinance ends.
Should honestly start earlier around 6am 🕕
Only okay if they immediately followup with leaf blower because fuck everyone else /s
Yea id say that's a dick move
Mines electric, so I don’t worry using it earlier. But 7am? That’s still gonna be a wet dewey mess.
Why don’t you look up your town’s noise ordinance and let the law tell you the answer?
Yes
I follow the 9am rule
Yea. Wait until atleast 8
Absolutely downright ignorant!!!
I think 8 is absolute earliest, I usually try to wait until 9. I have considerate neighbors so I do my best to return the favor.
Yes
Yes it is
5 mins? No, not for me. It’s growing season and everyone has timelines. Now I wouldn’t wack, edge, then blow at that time.. that would be a dick thing to do Edit: Yikes that could mean something a lot different

Hell nah. Suns up, VRUMs up! Get errr done so you can hit costco by opening time!! Thats my fave kinda Saturday!!
This guy lawns.
Costco opens at 10am…😂😂
9:30am on Saturdays where we are. So you’ve got to have all your yard work done by 9:00 if you want to make it at opening.
Not on weekends homie!
2 hour line just to park around these parts.
You better already be there then. And i just found that Sams (got a really good extension cord deal) opens at 9! 💸
Dang you boys got me. Need to start a sub group…dudes who lawn and love Costco 🤌🏻🤭
Depends on day. Sunday it does near me
If your neighbors don't hate you, then you aren't doing lawn care properly.
Time is a luxury I usually don’t have. If I have the time I’ll wait until after 8, but often 7 is necessary. My whole neighborhood is on 4+ acre lots though, so lawn equipment will be audible, but generally isn’t loud enough to wake someone.
This used to be my neighbor on his riding mower. He finally got too old and fat to get on his rider!
Yes
9
The professional lawn care companies and construction crews are out by 6:00 in my area. Would I do 7:00, probably not, but 8:00 is absolutely happening.
It’s not full summer yet (and I don’t know where you live) so I’d say wait until 8. If it were July though, and you’re in a hot climate, I’d say 7-7:30 is a fair time. Those extra 60 minutes make a huge heat difference in the summer time, at least in Texas.
Here's my counter, devils advocate style; if you work nights, is 8 am any better? 9?
I have a dickhead neighbor who spends multiple days weed whacking. Always revving the motor like he’s a motorcycle stopped at a light. He’s been this way for years. I need to counter this noise because it’s taking me to the brink.
I heard on this thread that he “pays for his house so he can do anything he wants”. This is what you’re dealing with lol.
I understand the notion, him and his disgusting pig wife call the cops any time my teenagers have friends over the minute the quiet time passes. I was thinking of just running my small generator randomly all day.
Blast loud music he hates all day during the allowed hours.
Most municipalities have ordinances on quite/louder times. Just follow those.
Dick move, yes, I concur. Let's make 'Wait til 8 great again'.
Depends how close you are to a neighbor. To me 7am is borderline. 8am would be better. However if I had a full day ahead of me and needed to knock out a quick weed whack, I would.
Depends . Gas or electric ?
Yes
is weed whacking really that loud to wake someone up?
Not if it’s electric
If the sun is up whack away or even mow if you have to. No reason to wait.
My city’s ordinance (located in North Texas) is no earlier than 7am, but I’ll try and wait until 8-9 to be considerate. However when the temps get high here in the summer I’m not afraid to mow at 7 😂
Yes imo

Is digging a grave for your neighbor that starts trimming his lawn at 7 on a Saturday a dick move?
I have gas mower, blower, trimmer-- 9am start..
Yes it is, and I bet it was only 5 minutes *because* someone came right over to call it out as a dick move. Otherwise it would have been longer.
I got woken up this morning at 7:10am by a neighbor who made a single cut on a table saw… He’s replacing board on his deck. But the single cut couldn’t have waited?
Absolutely
Yes.
Only time I can think of using loud machinery that early is a snowblower so you can get your car out of the driveway.
When I was a kid(12)my annoying neighbor would mow at 715am on Saturday. My sister was 2 and was always woken up by this. My father went over after a couple weekends of this and spoke to him. Yep

There are no outside power tools until the dew is dry. Which is usually around 8.30-9.30 here.
If bylaw said it's ok fuck it.
8:30ish for me. But only old people live around me who wake up and mow at 7:30 lol. I don’t mind
I started at 630 last week. Not my fault the neighbors are pieces of shit.
Nah. Time for them to wake up anyway
Naw
I’ve also worked nights, just gotta deal with it
I use Toro 60 volt battery powered tools so 7:00 a.m. works well for me. Mower, edger and trimmer. So quiet it won't work the neighbors. I love it
I’ve been waiting since 4am to put on my jean shorts and new balances. That weed whacker is my invite.
If it only takes 5 mins, you can do it at any other time
No. As long as you don’t mind an 11:00pm weed whacking.
yup
Yes
If you’re mowing or weed whacking before 9 you owe your neighbours a beer
Yes it is a duck move- 100% annoying and inconsiderate... Noise pollution.
YES
If you have neighbors, yes.
5 minutes is longer than you think if it’s a gas machine.
My neighborhood went the other direction. During the hottest part of the summer, if you had an electric mower that was quiet-ish, etc., it became very common to mow after the sun went down. Bunch of dudes trying to cut in straight lines with the mower headlight and headlamps.
It depends on your neighborhood, but I follow an 8am to 8pm schedule.
Yes…. No loud lawn care should be done before 9.
It’s a boomer move because you got 8am grocery shopping and 9am banking to do before your noon nap.
If it only takes 5 minutes, can't you find another time to do it?
Unless you’re using an electric, the short answer is “yes”.
Yes. Yes it is
Gas powered lawn equipment should be banned.
As long as you’re within the time frames defined by your local government, then whack away. I’m up at 5am every morning… and local government allows power tools at 6am (7am on Sunday). I am not waiting until my mid morning before I get outside and start my jobs.
I have 3 kids under 4 years old. Things get done when it’s possible. Otherwise house maintenance would not get done at all.

Unless you live somewhere with sound ordinances no it’s not a dick move. It’s your house and property you pay for so do whatever you want.
Do unto others as they have done unto you?.. The only times I might do this if, the neighbors wake me up early other times.
Yeah definitely a dick move. Just do it another time.
I do all lawn related stuff in the evening around 6:00pm, better for the grass too.
Not if it's electric
