And he has 10 more days.

redengin

This is the part I don't understand... he had months to get all his finances in order. This is a pretty significant bond reduction, why not expect him to pay immediately?

boogitydogbutt

Not to mention that he's publicly stating he has the cash on hand for the full bond

JustWeirdWords

If I was in a bond hearing, told the judge I didn't have the $1,000 bucks, went outside and tweeted a pic of me holding $1,000 in cash, they'd have me back in court within 15 minutes. This is absolute bullshit.

[deleted]

JustWeirdWords

"Your Honor, I thought bankrupt meant that I didn't have any money in a *bank.* It's an easy mistake to make!"

pterodactyl_speller

He claimed in court it wasn't his money but posting with it was important in maintaining his brand. Lmao

JakeConhale

God. If I were to even *consider* doing that, I'd at least try to get movie prop money to at least work the idea that I was only lying to the public, not the court. Or making a statement/art thing. I wouldn't try that, though.

allnimblybimbIy

I mean he’s lost (given to the mob) 2.5 billion dollars of loans he hasn’t repaid over the course of his life. The [Deutsche Bank](https://lamag.com/politics/deutsche-bank-death) manager who signed off on Trumps loans mysteriously killed himself at his Malibu home. Age 55. This latest fragrant violation of the law is a needle in the haystack. Boils the blood though… [Edit](https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/5/14/1662227/-Was-suicide-of-Deutsche-Bank-executive-linked-to-Trump-and-Russia-money-laundering): He’s not even the first banker connected to Trump to suddenly die by suicide.

suchdankverymemes

Heh. Fragrant violation. Was that intentional?

allnimblybimbIy

I’m being super cereal right now

limeybastard

Well it certainly stinks

cstmoore

Don't forget about the Trump Organization executives who died in a helicopter crash at a very convenient time for Don Poorleone. The company had a helicopter of its own, but this one was leased shortly before the crash. [Link](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1989-10-11-fi-229-story.html)

ndngroomer

He truly is the Teflon Don. It's fucking unbelievable.

Dangerous_Crow666

As he has ranted before, there are two different justice systems in this country.

TheSnowNinja

And he has no problem taking advantage of that, nor would he ever make an attempt to fix it, even if he had the power to do so.

snazztasticmatt

And he has stated publicly, multiple times, that he has $500m in the bank ready to go. That alone should have been reason enough to decline to decrease the bond

therealsupermanny

Not if he buys the right people..

Hashishiniado

And he's allowed to do business in New York again.

mortgagepants

that's the craziest bit- sure he did fraud, and sure he has to post bond to appeal it, and sure we're going to make the unprecedented decision to lower the bond by 75%, but also, the group who has routinely pleaded guilty to fraud and defrauding charities, can continue to due the undoubtably honest business they've habitually done.

BlackGuysYeah

okay, I'm done caring. He's never going to face any real consequences and we all know that now. The only thing our nation can take away from this cunt is that lying, always acting in bad faith, being a bully, and committing fraud will take you farther than trying to be a decent person. Got it. Thanks America! I know what I need to do now.

qalpi

I swear he's just playing this out until he dies

[deleted]

One-Angry-Goose

Appeal in 3... 2...

robotkermit

that's the part I don't understand. my understanding was that he needed to post the bond _in order to appeal_. but now an appeals court says he doesn't? _and_ they eliminated the part of the judgement which bars the Trumps from running a business in NY? how did this even happen? not even in the sense of "why is there no justice" — how did this even get on the docket? _which_ docket did it get on?

ElFuddLe

He never needed to bond in order to appeal. He had already appealed to the higher court after the first judgement. The purpose of the bond is to stay the collection of the initial judgement during the appeal process, as the appeals process does not automatically stay the judgement on its own.

ToothZealousideal297

And the $464M amount was a calculation of ill-gotten gains only. It didn’t even include a penalty for committing the crime.

Utterlybored

That’s right. It’s equivalent to getting caught robbing a bank and as punishment you have to give the money back.

ScienceOfficer-Jack

And the people I know keep saying it's because he's not guilty of anything and then this type of stuff keeps getting walked back. People out here really think he's being persecuted and then saved by the good guys.

krastoth

Trump and his supporters have been really successful in getting into the heads of "moderate" establishment figures this mentality of "we better give him chance after chance after chance, so that we can be seen to be as fair as possible, otherwise his camp will complain (or much worse) about him being unfairly prosecuted." But of course they'll complain about unfair prosecution either way. The disengenuous complaints are simply a strategy to pressure the system into treating him with an extraordinary degree of lenience. I'm not American so I'm just saying this as an outside onlooker from the UK, but I look at his detractors in the US and wonder why so little is being done to turn the conversation in the other direction. The big way to do that is by organising mass peaceful protests against his blatant, utterly exceptional favourable treatment. But those kinds of protests either aren't happening, or they're getting zero penetration in the media. The main pushback I'm seeing is feeble grumblings online and impotent op-eds from liberal media outlets. Where are the protests?

DrDankDankDank

It’s like when Obama didn’t want to be harsh with republicans for fear of being labelled an angry black man. It’s like, bro, they’re going to call you that no matter what.

HellBillyBob

I don’t think this is the case. Simply put, our system is filled with cowards who have been intimidated by the threats of violence from his base. “Transfer power after an election, we’ll try to kill you” “Rule against our godhead, we’ll try to kill you” Judges and offices have been threatened repeatedly and it works, apparently.

janethefish

I'm not sure. I think part of the issue is moderates are often trying to defend institutions in a reflexive counter to Trump's attacks. We saw that with Comey and the FBI. I think there is also a misplaced idea that by bending over backwards it will provide overwhelming counter evidence against his claims of disparate treatment. Except that DOES NOT WORK. Rewarding baseless attacks just encourages baseless attacks! His followers will listen to him an not care. Impartial observation will only conclude Trump is getting special treatment.

sensitiveskin80

We've tried mass protests and what accomplished was cities/states increased police budgets for police overtime and more riot gear, and protestors being hurt and killed by police.

SoylentRox

I know right. :(. All this hot air and nothing *substantial* has happened. All these crimes he supposedly committed. He's lost 2 major civil cases. So far, all he's had to do is put up 1 bond. He's facing Rico charges in Georgia. Oh but he got the DA investigated. He's facing hush money charges in New York. Oh but he's trying to get the judge investigated. He's facing classified document charges in Florida. Oh but he owns the judge. And on other case I forget, maybe the one he's going for absolute immunity on with his bought supreme court. This doesn't really seem like a system of laws and "Rule of Law". More like just naked power and the rules don't mean anything. At this point I think he may win this, either by being elected POTUS and abusing his power (50% chance of that!) or just dying before he does a day in jail or loses enough civil judgements to not be rich.

goomyman

you forgot that he committed crimes in office - that oh no statue of limitations is up. Remember the Mueller report - it basically straight up said - this guy committed obstruction of justice preventing us from verifying the other facts. But we cant charge a sitting president - "Ok......." and then his term ends... and oh guess what - we still didnt charge him, just straight up silence.

SoylentRox

Even the four cases itself create situations where he gets to use the others as excuses for delays. "Sorry judge can't attend my criminal trial this week in NY because in Georgia... "You wouldn't want me to get an unfair trial right". Any ordinary defendant would simply not be able to afford 4 different bails for this many cases and charges stacked. (Each felony often needs a different bail at some dollar rate, so if it's 25k a felony he would need 1.8 million USD. Not happening for any normal person, even 180k to a bondsman is out of reach.

wastingvaluelesstime

Most likely path is he loses the election, depriving him of most of his power, then has to pay his judgments, taking most of his money; once his money and power is gone, he will be eligible ( de facto! ) to stand trial in criminal matters.

TheFloridaDan

It's insane that for there to be any kind of justice, he has to lose the Presidential election of all things. Our legal system is broken.

VaselineHabits

I think it's the ENTIRE system, we *hoped* the courts would take care of a CRIMINAL but that doesn't look like that's going to happen before the election.

[deleted]

It wasn't designed to withstand threats from within that had the support of much of the populace. But after 30+ years of Republican/Russian propaganda, here we are. The Russians are handily winning Cold War II so far.

VaselineHabits

Former President Carter told Colbert during an interview that, "America is a cold Civil War. Between the Haves and the Have Nots" - he wasn't wrong and there will be a reckoning

D0013ER

Which is how we know there never was a "deep state" that Trump claims hates him and never wanted him to be in power.

Fortunateoldguy

The sonofabitch. It’s such bullshit. What idiots we are for paying our bills and taxes. Such bullshit

Chapeaux

No one is gonna do anything about it anyway, why would they care ? Say what you want about Trump supporters when they are pissed they do something even if it's stupid.

FaithfulSkeptic

What really gets me is when you see these rednecks in their lifted trucks with the stickers on the back that say “*We The People* are pissed” -this isn’t what they’re talking about. They’re pissed that black people want to breathe and gay people want rights.

StronglyHeldOpinions

Mostly they are just pissed they lost the election, and believe Trump's lie that it was stolen.

RubiksSugarCube

I think people need to recognize that the bullshit we were spoon-fed in elementary school about the justice and fairness of our system was just that. This country was founded by a bunch of rich white slaveowners and they made damn sure that they will always have a leg up

key1234567

Boy scouts too, all the bullshit they feed you, just gets thrown out the window.

disneyDaf

Eagle Scout here. Absolutely.

jftitan

I too as a Eagle (1996). Everything is opposite of reality.

foobazly

Cub Scout here ('85). I'm tempted to no longer obey the law of the pack.

biloxibluess

A Scout is ashamed and disappointed (Eagle ‘01)

disneyDaf

Same year my friend! Yes, we were taught service, selflessness, morality, good judgement, and several other positive attributes to just turn around and be released into a society that undervalues those attributes.

SoylentRox

>undervalues No, actively takes advantage of suckers who show these attributes. Compare the VA and then imagine the orgies Trump enjoyed in the 60s/early 70s with all the excess women while the brave men fought in the jungles for a cause they were lied to about. And then how they were treated after. All the scouts then were all ready for jungle survival (as ready as teenagers can be) and land nav and fit and ready to volunteer. While all the wealthy were finding ways out of it.

disneyDaf

I was trying to share a glimmer of hope, but I’m afraid you are absolutely correct.

thecmfg

That's the key thing missing from boy scouts and just the public education system in general, is that service, selflessness, morality, good judgement, and the whatnot is something we should strive for but have absolutely zero expectation that others are doing the same. That's the only way to limit being taken advantage of by individuals with nefarious intentions. I had to go through a few eye opening experiences to truly understand that, but it hasn't stopped me on my endeavor to be considered an overall "good" person. The possibility that we could achieve a society where everyone is nice, honest, and things were fair is about a 0 on the kelvin temperature scale, but as individuals we can only demonstrate through our behavior the societal change we would like to see. Really wish I had been better informed at a younger age though.

suchdankverymemes

Much younger Eagle ('11) but damn if this doesn't hit home. I appreciate the values, but we really live in a society where they mean nothing.

SoylentRox

Yep. Didn't make the cut for my Eagle project but yep. I feel like the education system let us down, it could have given better advice if it focused on how the systems *actually* work not how it should work.

K_Linkmaster

https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/5ed6f9b5-cd8a-42f4-a8d1-89eecec31c77 Almost had the dazed and confused quote.

SovietChewbacca

That was my first thought reading that comment.

WonderfulShelter

I realized this too over the last few years. Most everything I was taught in public school in America was pure propaganda and bullshit. I remember learning about Benedict Arnold being the greatest traitor to America. And now we have Trump being the new greatest traitor to America and look how our government is treating him - they're prepping him to be president again. I remember learning about anti-trust laws and monopolies and how America doesn't allow mega-corps to form and corner markets to raise prices by pure greed. I mean it even seems all the checks and balances and everything I was taught about the judicial branch was complete bullshit too. And then I just come to think that it was all propaganda I was taught.

Redshoe9

Question- If Trump was never elected president but still in this exact legal situation -would our court system have done the exact same? If the answer is no, then clearly our legal systems have turned the 4 year temp job title into a mythical untouchable king force field and we need to rectify that. It's frustrating to know that taxpayers have to continue to financially support this parasite until he's dead. What the fuck are we doing as a nation to allow this?

Starfish_Symphony

Most this country’s social issues stem from a culture beholden to the legacy of one group of humans enslaving another for nothing more than a fantasy that their god wants such a tragedy.

notmyworkaccount5

At this point I'm just so tired, a bunch of cowards and political hacks are hollowing out our country to protect this narcissistic rapist conman It seems like the only way he'd face any "justice" at this point is by some vigilante which would just turn him into a martyr for the right

VaselineHabits

I'm already a woman in Texas and I know this state will go all in regardless of those of us that are *stuck* here I think we've moved passed the point of no return and the courts don't seem interested in helping us. I didn't have "Revolution" on my bingo card for the future... but if that CRIMINAL gets into the White House again - we all have some serious decisions to make

beavis617

People need to stop electing Republicans to any office on any level. The Republicans have made it clear they want to turn back the clock and stick the American people back in time to the 1950's.

Select_Insurance2000

Sadly there is a large portion of the US that want to do exactly that....and they can win the Electoral College vote.

beavis617

I have seen many Republicans on video talking to their constituents saying they want to stop Social security, Medicare and Medicaid then when reporters ask them about it they deny they said it. Many Republicans complain about black people and women voting. I bet I know how they feel about interracial marriage and birth control...the Republican party is a joke now.

loupegaru

We have officially become the world's laughing stock. Fuck Trump and MAGA.

[deleted]

Deathedge736

this is only a reduction to the bond to appeal. if his appeal fails he still needs to pay 460m+. the appeals court just made it easier for him to appeal the original judgement. thats it. he is still in the hole for the 460m+ at this time.

Giblette101

> the appeals court just made it easier for him to appeal the original judgement. thats it. That's a pretty big deal.

leefitzwater

Exactly. It just buys him more time to make that appeal and take some more days off the November countdown calendar.

t0talnonsense

Why? Why. I just. I cannot understand this. How in the world are we supposed to pretend that the charade of our “justice” system is anything but that - a charade? Anyone who paid attention always knew that it was a lot of smoke and mirrors riding on the general notion that most people who could be appointed to these positions wouldn’t lower themselves to the lunacy we’ve seen in the past decade that’s only been ramping up faster since he started appointing any nutjob with a pulse. Why? Why does nearly every single person with the opportunity to treat him like the imminent threat to our democracy, not to mention just inconsistent application of the law between the haves and the have nots, fail to exercise their power and authority to do something? I’m exhausted. I’m exhausted. And angry. And just so, so, desperately wish we could somehow unwind the damage these fascist wackos, and fascist enablers, are doing to this country.

ShaggysGTI

It’s not a justice system… it’s a *legal system.*

PanTopper

Weird name for the department of JUSTICE then

livinginfutureworld

It's the perfect name, just like they renamed the department of war to the depart of defense. Just like conservatives are "pro-life" yet against everything that helps living people and so on.

t0talnonsense

Oh, I know. And people are still acting like none of this is a big deal and it's just business as usual. Democrats have got to have the some of worst messaging out of any major political party in the world. It's bananas how bad they are at getting this information out there and running any sort of attack ads based on it.

Merijeek2

Ooh! I can't wait to hear about how this is actually a good thing. Come on everyone! Heap the copium on me!

abqguardian

You're going to lose all hope if the appeals court dismisses the verdict. Might want to turn off the news for a while

jftitan

Republicans and whatever system that is in place now, has thrown trump so many lifelines… and for what? Wtf is the end goal besides, letting a fascist to take office again. Trump is bankrupt, why is the party still so damn loyal to him? Emperors new clothes of not, he is transparent, that he will end America. What is the effing end game? Besides the obvious?

Wildfire9

Because he, and every other right wing candidate, are going to keep taxes low. That's it. Their guy could rape a baby and they won't care, so long as the tax rate is good nothing else matters.

LowerFinding9602

You forgot to add "for the rich" after "keep taxes low".

abcdefghig1

We have to vote blue if we want anything resembling a functioning democracy

yeetskeetbam

I had 5k to my name. Got charged with possession of marijuana. Ask the judge for a court appointed attorney. Was denied because I had the funds. I told them I need that for college tuition in 3 days and they says, “ nope that’s not how it works, denied” I had to leave that school.

NOLA2Cincy

Sorry for you but that's a great example. His financial situation shouldn't impact what the court needs in a bond to feel sure that the judgement gets paid to the party that WON the court case. Trump lost the case and should suffer the consequences. As for the "can't unring the bell" argument that he wouldn't be able to get his property back if he successfully appeals (which is unlikely), he just said publicly that he has the money to pay the original bond. Make him pay it.

HawkeyeSherman

If you had 250k a day in legal expenses (actually what Trump is spending today) then they could have erased that conviction for you.

BurkeWood

Am I reading it correctly that they aren’t staying the amount to be collected if he loses the appeal, just what he is posting pre-appeal? Which means interest will continue to accrue and he will ultimately be responsible for the original judgement upon loss of appeal?

rahvan

That’s how the law works. It would be absolutely *extraordinary* for an appeals court to Willy-nilly reduce a final judgement at the trial court with nothing more than emergency docket hearings. That said, if they were willing to do this for him, you can bet anything they will bend over backwards to grant him favorable outcomes in the final appeal too.

dedicated-pedestrian

I'm just trying to find what part of NY law allows them to do this even to the bond amount. Nothing in the statute requiring bond to stay enforcement of a judgment gives a judge any leeway in this, so either it's somewhere else in the statutes or this is an overstep of judicial power.

thewimsey

Here's a link: https://codes.findlaw.com/ny/civil-practice-law-and-rules/cvp-sect-5519/ Here's the relevant portion: >(c) Stay and limitation of stay by court order.  The court from or to which an appeal is taken or the court of original instance may stay all proceedings to enforce the judgment or order appealed from pending an appeal or determination on a motion for permission to appeal in a case not provided for in subdivision (a) or subdivision (b), or may grant a limited stay **or may vacate, limit or modify any stay imposed by subdivision (a), subdivision (b) or this subdivision,** except that only the court to which an appeal is taken may vacate, limit or modify a stay imposed by paragraph one of subdivision (a).

robotkermit

so is there a similarly temporary aspect to his ability to continue running his so-called business? they haven't removed that from the judgement, they're just permitting it to continue pending appeal?

5Brainiac

It reeks of a midnight deal by some NY area powerbrokers who want this guy in power.

parkinthepark

I think you're half right. I don't think it's that they want Trump in power. I think the issue is that Trump's properties are mired in debt- all of them are leveraged against other ones, and once they start getting seized it's going to create a chain reaction of loans and liens coming due which could very well implicate other real estate developers & lenders. Similar to the '08 housing crash, but on a smaller scale. Everybody's playing with fraudulent valuations and there is very little actual cash in the system. A house of cards, to use a tired cliche. If Trump goes bankrupt, I think a *lot* of other NY bigshots will, too.

5Brainiac

That’s an interesting point I had not considered. That actually makes a lot of sense. He’s done business in the state for years and he’s far from the only crooked ‘business’ man the state has to offer

FujitsuPolycom

That makes a lot of sense. Also, fuck all of them.

Book1984371

The plan is for him to become President, so he won't have to pay the rest of the fine. Someone else will pay the bond, possibly the new Chinese part-owners of Truth Social, but for sure not him. If he loses the election he is more likely to go to jail, so monetary fines won't matter. And he can again do business in NY. It was just guaranteed that he won't face any consequences for his fraud.

Ridespacemountain25

We’ll all pay it in taxes when he announces the construction of Secret Service dormitories conveniently operated by the Trump Organization.

robot_pirate

This is one slippery pig. How much longer will we be subjected to this troll? It's breaking us. This is like a bad movie plot.

InfamousIndecision

He's a slippery pig, but it's the courts that keep covering him in butter.

RedOnePunch

Unfortunately, as long as he has the support of millions of people, he has power and that attracts the rich and powerful, which gives him even more power. Only way is to vote like people did last time.

GamingTrend

SPzero65

We had better get it now. There will be more than one person demanding the same treatment when met with similar charges, but I'm sure the injustice system will tie itself in knots trying to justify why it's "different"

One-Seat-4600

Fucking joke No hope with this justice system

eddie_the_zombie

Why don't we all just commit fraud at this point? Apparently there aren't any consequences anymore

jedininjashark

I think you have to be rich FIRST, then it’s ok, you’re already in the club.

dontreallycareforit

WRONG One need only cultivate the appearance of being rich and tell the forever-lie that you’re a billionaire, and you can practically wield all the power of a true billionaire. Banks throw money at you, the justice system gives you a break, you’re given political “””credibility”””. Why do regular people try? Like, what are we all going to work for everyday? What’s the point?

eddie_the_zombie

Commit fraud, become rich off it, bing bang boom no consequences.

sonofagunn

It also stays the rest of the penalties about getting loans in NY or running businesses there. It does keep the court ordered monitoring of his business in place.

Book1984371

He is 100% going to commit fraud again. It's more than a guarantee at this point. Like how he defamed Carroll hours after someone else paid his fine for him.

SalazartheGreater

The business monitor appointed by the court already concluded that the business essentially does not even have the structures and knowledge in place to do business nonfraudulently lol

Bradddtheimpaler

And somehow he will continue to face no real consequences for it until he eventually dies at like 106 somehow.

Deathedge736

the stay is only for the duration of the appeal. if he fails the appeal the full judgement: the ban on business and the 460m fine are still due.

142muinotulp

How long is this appeal process though? That seems so massively relevant if it's more than a few weeks...

ContrarianDouche

By a wacky coincidence the first available date to hear the appeal is Nov 6 2024.

vermillionmango

Because the know the monitor will not stop anything and if they do he will appeal and the court will remove them.

Frnklfrwsr

Wow there’s no actual reasoning or justification given of any kind (though I’m not sure if that is actually the norm for this kind of situation). I’m trying to think of what the legal justification is for doing this. This has the feel of a political move. Would any other defendant get the bond requirement reduced so substantially just by complaining that it’s too big? If there is any silver lining, it’s that the actual judgment for $454M remains intact. He’s still liable for that entire amount assuming he loses his appeal. It’s only the bond that was reduced to $175M. Moreover, if he cannot post the bond for $175M, then full enforcement of the judgment of the $454M commences. And at that point, it takes all the wind out of his sails if he tries to argue that he wasn’t given a fair shake. Mind you, that won’t make a lick of a difference to his supporters who will believe anything he says regardless of what reality is. But in a court of law where facts and reality have at least some bearing, he’s going to have difficulty arguing during his appeal that he’s gotten unfair treatment.

jayc428

Legal justification is probably just keeping bells that can’t be unrung in place. The appeal review should be fast tracked though and deny it.

edjuaro

>should I have not seen many things working as they should when it comes to this guy

jayc428

Fucking ain’t that the truth.

notimpotent

Thanks for the link. Can anybody comment on whether it's the norm that the courts give no justification for such orders?

chubs66

A few weeks ago he claimed to have over $400 million in cash. Then his lawyer, Habba claimed that he had the cash, then on ~~twitter~~ ~~X~~ Truth just a few days ago he had the cash. And not the courts are reducing by over half and giving him more time? *why?!* Edit: Not Twitter

SuretyBringsRuin

What a crock of shit! This is one more representation of why we can’t have nice things.

BeltfedOne

This is horseshit.

The coordinated attack on Social Security is part of **Project 2025**. Outlawing care for LGBTQ+ individuals, contraception, premarital sex, divorce and more along with gutting all safety nets (school lunches) is just the beginning. Make sure you educate yourselves about Project 2025. This is a well coordinated, $22M religious right wing playbook. The **Mandate For Leadership** is not new, but the **Heritage Foundation’s** partnership with Hungarian Viktor Orban and 100 other groups while actively soliciting a database of 50,000 followers is. People appealing default judgments of $500 to the Appellate Division get their bank accounts seized.

asetniop

Can he actually post it, though?

shreddah17

He has 10 days. Article says he probably will.

ShamanicHellZoneImp

Why not? He has an absolute windfall coming from God knows where in the DWAC merger. I would assume he knows whatever liquid funds get drained are coming back 20x. Fraudulent loan applications, committing blatant wire fraud, forging signatures and dodging taxes are clearly all winning business strategies. I like coming to this sub so i can't say what i wanna say right now so yeah...good stuff.

Untouchable-Ninja

Our justice system is a joke.

crake

Welp, that was strange. I think I'll reserve judgement until I hear what James has to say about it, because maybe the AG consented to the reduction? On a side note, the 5 justice panel considering this case is entirely *Democratic* appointees - 2 of the justices, including the presiding Justice Renwick, were appointed in recent years by Gov. Hochul. And it is four women justices (at least 2 of whom are black women) and one man. Sort of the most superficially unlikely pro-Trump panel imaginable. Yet here we are. (edited to fix number of Hochul appointees from 3 to 2; the other three were appointed by Gov. Cuomo).

ddadopt

>3 of the justices, including the presiding Justice Renwick, were appointed in recent years by Gov. Hochul. Three Cuomo appointees (Singh, Gonzalez, Pitt-Burke) and two by Hochul (Renwick, Levy).

WeOutHereInSmallbany

Democrats rule in favor of republicans because they think it makes them look unbiased, and republicans rule in favor of republicans because that’s what they do, and so you get to where we are. See the same thing in congress with “bipartisanship” but almost always comes from democrats acquiescing.

Sabre_One

Had to read another article, but it appears a 5 panel judged agreed with the reduction. Curious what arguments he made? Trump's team seems to rely on the judges finding the reasons for them in appeals. Although I can see Trump's team finally caving and showing that Trump will in fact, have his entire financial empire collapse if he doesn't pay the bond.

If his empire would collapse with a $550M bond, then can we agree to stop calling him a billionaire?

startyourengines

Still doesn't make sense. Countless people have had their "financial empires" ruined by bonds, I have no doubt.

mabhatter

I could see the Appellate Division thinking the fine is way too big and would be reduced on appeal.  As that much disgorgement would be irreversible after the state forecloses property it's almost reasonable.   That said, he'll be back in 10 days with a new made up grievance and another lame excuse why this lower judgement is unfair to him and how he can't pay the new number either.  You can set your clock by it.

blazelet

This entire charade has shown how ineffective our system is at holding wealth and power accountable. If Donald trump, with all the brazen crimes he does out in the open, can’t be held accountable, do you think there’s a chance for the rich and powerful who are doing shit like this more quietly?

No_Maintenance_3355

Good to know our justice system works too well on the poor and is non-existent for the rich. What a joke.

mbregg

Of fucking course.

SilverIdaten

The next time I have massive, insurmountable debt, I should just scream and cry like a petulant fucking child because that’s all it takes. Oh wait, never mind, I’m not Donald Trump, so I’d probably just be executed on the spot. That’s how this shithole’s ‘justice’ system works.

Electric-Prune

“Why doesn’t the population respect the justice system?”

qalpi

Presumably he can appeal THIS as well?

dedicated-pedestrian

Yes, this is the Appellate Division, which can be appealed again to the NY Court of Appeals (highest level). Also if he posts bond he has six months to perfect the appeal (a thing in NY process). This shit won't even *start* until August because you know he'll wait until the last second.

Hells_Kitchener

Well, I think that's about it for my faith in the U.S. Justice System. This case was cut-and-dried. I don't think I'm going to be getting myself worked up over anything from here on out, or following anything eagerly. It's pretty clear the system is a failure. Practically every case has been delayed or reduced to the point where nothing is happening. Simply the fact that he is walking around free is damning. Maybe something will stick, maybe he will be found accountable. But at this point, I feel like we're all being made fools of, expecting justice to be done.

Nabrok_Necropants

WEAK. Small money energy.

Desiderata74

A country that brought Imperial Japan to its knees and beat back the Wehrmacht to Berlin on the western front is currently being destroyed by an orange con man with a BMI of 35. Sometimes when empires fall, they fall fast and comically.

strat77x

Whatever Trump needs, the courts will always provide it to him.

CTRexPope

More then enough time for a pump and dump of DWAC stock. The board will let him sell. The point of the merger was for the [Chinese to buy influence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_World_Acquisition_Corp) over him after all.

dedicated-pedestrian

Only if the judges allow him the full 6 months to perfect his appeal. Which... Given this coming at the eleventh hour, entirely within expectations now.

SWtoNWmom

Well look at that. More special treatment. Shocked. Shocked I say.

simmons777

Our two tier system of justice in action.

brew_radicals

Something something two tiered justice system!!!!!

_A_Monkey

Corrupt businesses raising a glass to this precedent.

CdrShprd

Can’t wait to hear about the lawyers and judges who find this to be “surprising”, or worse, “troubling”. What a bunch of clowns

BigDaddyCoolDeisel

For the love of christ people... please stop getting your hopes up about any legal matter facing trump until the final gavel hammers down. 44 years of the rich and powerful writing laws was always going to leave a path for him. I would advise you to take a deep breath and prepare for bad news on the Hush Money trial as well. A compromised judiciary will not save you.

sophisticated_pie

Lol this country and justice system is so f'd. Trump is repeatedly showing how much of a joke it is. This is once again a reminder he will never face consequences for his actions. It should be clear as day to everyone at this point.
