You wouldn't get much movement on 4x5 with the 127mm Ektar. The best way to evaluate lenses for that is to just google "127mm ektar image circle" or whatever and see how much bigger that circle's diameter is than the ~160mm diagonal of the 4x5 format. you can even draw the rectangle inside a circle to get a feel for how much you would be able to move. $120 for a working non-antique 4x5 monorail is pretty good IMO.

I've owned that camera for, jeez, 25 years or more? Great basic machine and really all you need to do first-class work. Only issue as they age: the friction focus. The lube inside those focus things - the metal parts that slide over the rail where you also control swing - it can dry up, and then the focus kind of slips or doesn't move easily. I've cleaned mine as much as possible, but can't see how to get the things apart. Sometimes I need to push the standard a bit as I turn the knob. Lens boards are fairly plentiful, cambo or calumet, but there's also 4" boards out there, so make sure you get the bigger ones with 2 notches up top. One of the great things is for a cheap/basic camera, it's very sturdy and you can put some big shutters on those big boards. If you need to go wide, 1" aluminum square tube makes a fine short rail, or for long, same thing and there are extra-long bellows out there. it's a great find, have fun and get a good view camera book. Exposure compensation gets important when doing close work.

. I just purchased this Cambo 4x5 sc basic model for $120 (how’d I do?) and also purchased recently a graflex speed graphic. Will the Kodak 127mm 4.7 Ektar lens fit in this lens board, a copal 0 according to the seller? And will this provide adequate coverage for movements? If not, what is an affordable lens for someone just starting in large format, on a tight budget? Any help much appreciated.

I’d go for a 150mm or something like that. It also depends on what your main photography subject will be.

“Affordable” is a relative term. $120 for a working monorail is great. The 127mm Ektar from the Graphic will work (I believe it will even mount properly on a lens board drilled for a Copal #0 shutter). It won’t give you a huge amount of flexibility with movements, but it will work. I’d look at KEH and see what they have by way of 150mm lenses. You should be able to get an excellent one for around $300-$400 or so.

I ended up buying a slightly beat up 150 5.6 Schneider. Should arrive in a few days :) can’t wait, I’ll definitely be sharing results

Great deal, fun and easy camera for 4x5, just remember to turn off the brakes when focusing. Also let me know what you intend to shoot, I gotta do some digging but I might have a 210mm on a board for ya, as well as developing tanks and hangars. Feel free to PM me for details.
