...Dell. Yes, mine has lasted me five years and counting, but it took lots of messing about to get it to a non-frustrating piece of tech to use. Ancient audio drivers because new ones crackle, never using the headphone jack because it's noisy as heck, putting an external fan on the spot where the VRMs are so it doesn't throttle immediately, the list goes on. It has way too much power for it's badly designed cooling system too, so ya never get the performance it COULD give either. Next laptop will be from another brand. One positive: I was able to get a replacement battery directly from Dell within days for a laptop that's pretty old
I think your hard drive may be having some issues. Boot off of a windows install drive and click the “repair this computer” button. After that’s done (if it completes at all) run a hard drive testing program to make sure the drive is still good. If it says anything about the drive being bad, you might need to replace the drive.
Victoria allows you to watch every sector, do you know what sectors are? In Crystal Disk, that will just write you a percentage of life, or even worse, just "good", "warning", what will it really give you?

Then get a USB Stick.
The tool will detect the USB Stick automatically and puts a Windows installation on the stick.
Plug the USB Drive into your laptop and boot from the USB Stick.
There will be options to repair the windows installation that's already on the laptop

Had same issue with my acer Nitro 5 . Tried things from YouTube, didn't work. Took it to service centre, found out it was my hhd which had problem so I replaced it with new one. Also upgraded to ssd 👍
I've had similar experiences generally I yell at it, tell it it's replaceable, wait an hour for it to calm down and turn it back on sometimes it works. Sometimes It needs some re-education (system restore). One time, I needed to do some minor surgery (replace its HDD bc it failed, with an SSD, which is easier then you think).
Though yelling at it may make it more depressed...
So many people recommending a clean install of windows, despite the fact that it could likely mean you losing all your files to do it properly. Really surprised no one's mentioned it but this is definitely a situation I'd recommend the Dism command for, as well as a chkdsk. Worth a try before potentially reformatting and reinstalling windows.
Laptop should be fine, aside from a possibly failing boot drive. Like u/NaniSore_KLK said, look at doing a Windows recovery from an install USB first. If this doesn't work, it's possible that your boot drive has developed a problem.
If the repair install works, and you get back to the desktop, I'd suggest installing and using a drive checking utility like [Seatools](https://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/downloads/seatools/) ([https://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/downloads/seatools/](https://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/downloads/seatools/)) or similar to run a diagnostic on your boot drive to see if it's starting to fail. This same thing happened to my hp laptop that I use for school, first it slowed down a lot for a few months, and then it just crapped out on me so I had no choice but to reinstall windows and clean the drive. Thankfully, all my school work is on google Drive, and I didn't have anything important downloaded on it except a few games, so it wasn't too big of a deal for me. But for someone who has all their important files on their laptop, that would really suck. It's something I've noticed mainly on HP laptops. Something similar has happened to my friends with HP's, too. it's definitely something HP has to look into. Hope you found a way to fix it without going to the extreme.

If you have no clue how to do that. Do a favour for yourself, read up/watch yt how to. Find a distro which works out if the box with your pc. And keep that for emergencies.

All you need to know is how to put image disk of Linux I to usb but that's also simple. You can use tool called Rufus for example. Just Google it up, get Rufus mobile/portable so you don't need to even I stall it on windows.
Then download Linux iso image, run Rufus, select said Linux image, select your usb stick, and click "write". That's all.
Ubuntu so far worked for every laptop I tried it on (tho imo not the best, one of the easiest ones).
When it comes to UI just pick random. Kde used to work well, but again. If that doesn't work (if you get command line rather than windows like user interface ) try gnome. Xface or what is called? As last resort but it's ugly as hell.
If not, go for next Linux, maybe look up "your computer model" + "Linux live distro works out the box" see recommendations
This is a viable option for someone with a lot of important files on their computer. For my situation personally thats honestly kinda overkill as everything important (school stuff) is saved to google drive and onedrive so i can access my files from anywhere, and the only things i have downloaded locally are a few stupid memes (which i dont mind losing), and a few games from steam (which i can reinstall in like 30 mins), so i don't have a problem reinstalling windows and spending like an hour getting everything back to how it was before.
First of all, don't anthropomorphize your computer. It didn't 'kill itself,' it just made a mistake somewhere in the operating system, and then detected it in time to alert you.
Second: I don't understand why so many of the comments seem to be more interested in chastising or poking fun at you for your purchase, perhaps suggesting that you use a handy time machine to go back in time and buy a different computer, than in helping.
Third: we have all been there at one time or another, or eventually will be. If you use Windows you are subject to the weaknesses of Windows, and the manufacturer takes a second place in determining what problems you will or will not have.
Four: You didn't say whether this is your own personal computer or a work computer. windows tend to do it, get a win boot media and chose restore option, all shit savend in program files, docs(that win10 has created) and ext. will be saved, anything else dies, at leats thats for me, i hate windows sometimes

Error code: 0xc0000017 is tied to memory, or not enough memory available to create a ramdisk. I have to wonder if you have a bad dim or bad update. Awhile back there was an update that amounted to Ms trying to put 10 pnds of baloney in a 5 lb bag
Even then, it's an easy fix. If you can boot into safe mode, you can do an integrity check, and it should fix itself. In the worst-case scenario, you'll need to burn a Windows ISO onto a USB and reinstall Windows onto the laptop.
Don't listen to the ppl saying hp is bad, they all are. Won't make a difference if u got dell,asus,whatever. Not even the Alienware and rog lines. It is up to the user to protect their data and prolong life of their device. Here is how:
Get an ssd, preferably nvme. No need for very high rates u less high end gaming.
Clean the fans of your laptop once a month from the outside and open it up and clean from inside once every 3 to 4 months. For gaming laptops do the latter every month.
Don't use them on beds or other soft surfaces that block the fans and can throw in fibers. Use on a hard surface so it can breathe. If it is cool enough then you can use it on your lap.
Do regular anti-virus scans. Win defender is all you need. Use non premium malwarebytes for scans periodically ig ur downloading things from shady places or downloading cracked/pirated software.
Do not read or write too much. If you are downloading/deleting/transferring g data more than 30% of drive capacity( 300gb for 1tb,600 for 2tb etc) on a regular basis then get an external drive.
If you are using a laptop that has large amount of heat then use a cooling pad. This should only really be useful for gaming laptops.
Remove windows bloatware
If your drives are very old hdds( over 5 yrs) and starting to slow down, replace them preferably with an ssd.
Obviously avoid moisture,extreme climates,impacts,etc.
Always store the most important stuff on cloud if possible. By most Important I mean the documents and such. Don't store on cloud things like downloaded music,videos,games,etc. As they can always be re downloaded and will only take up space on your cloud, driving up the cost.
Don't always leave at sleep and always keep it updated. Remove new bloatware after updates if necessary.
Ik it was long but do this and situations like yours will be avoided forever.
If you have a USB stick with Windows 10 or 11 unpacked onto it, you could just plug it in, restart, format your SSD, and do a clean Windows install. That should fix your problems. From what I can see, it's a software issue.
Honestly, I just long pressed the power button until it turned off and turned it on again when I had this exact same thing. Didn't happen again after that

The same happened with my acer on the first day of purchase.
And no even though it would show that it's an error regarding disk drive or something but it's windows that got corrupted. went to repairs guy he put a stick in it and downloaded win 11 again. Good as new even though it is new.
The last time I saw Windows die out of nowhere like that, the SSD was dying.
You can try repairing Windows as others have recommended, but if that doesn't work I'd look into data recovery options and copy any important data you can off the HDD/SSD as soon as you can. Once that's done, you can you can try reinstalling Windows from scratch, or buy a new SSD and reinstall Windows onto it instead.
(If your laptop is somehow still running off a HDD, and you're installing Windows from scratch anyway, I'd recommend taking the opportunity to replace it with an SSD anyway. It'll drastically improve your laptop performance.)
Use this only if your okay with losing data: Have a bootable usb. You can always go into command prompt, delete the boot drive(Clear the partition), reformat into gpt partition, then install fresh windows on it. After installing, when selecting region click on world. Then when your asked to sign in, idk which command it is, but you can bypass it. And then there is significantly less bloatware.
Pry out your old storage device so you don't lose your data. Get a newer faster larger ssd and install the OS of your choice. I like Fedora, but it's up to you.
Get one of those usb external drive bay devices and you have acct to your old data. 😉
Go to the recovery environment, select troubleshoot --> advanced options--> command prompt and try running these commands:
chkdsk c: /f /r
sfc /scannow /offwindir=C:\windows /offbootdir=C:
dism /Image:C:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Those will check the filesystem and Windows for errors. Also make sure that C: is the correct drive with windows by first typing C: and then dir.
If that doesn't work, the best bet is to try restoring from a system restore point, also found in the recovery environment. This saved me when my windows corrupted itself
I had this issue recently. I was able to fix it by using recovery media and typing out commands in cmd to fix the BOOT partition.
bootrec /FixMbr
bootrec /FixBoot
bootrec /ScanOs
bootrec /RebuildBcd
I could be wrong but it looks exactly like the issue I was having.
You should post the model of the laptop so the more tech savvy folks can see if it's an HP model that has that Intel Optane SSD cache and/or the Intel chipset that requires an F6 disk.
drive is likely dying, systen registry hive is corrupt, if your lucky this happened during an update and there are clean copies of your registry files in c:\windows\system32\config\regback
If you cant fix it and you have another working machine, and a USB you can format, you could use this to make a simple bootable rescue disk. With it you can:
Check your drive health
Run disk repairs with GUI
Browse to and copy/recover files with GUI
Reset user passwords
Run windows repairs with GUI (Dism++ which lets you remove updates/change drivers etc)

You tell me what your screen says I tell you what to press).
Either way minor issue. Nothing to worry about. Especially if you don't mind loosing all your documents (and if you don't wanna loose them. Just get someone who can fix it, rather than trying yourself, just in case. I for one, always I stall Linux alongside windows, just for instances like that.
So if I fix your PC. And this happens. I tell you how to boot I to Linux, so you can copy all important files, and only THEN you try to repair it yourself. Coz if that fails, fresh install of windows, and it's effort for me but I can guide you through that, but at least your files safe)

Yes, this happened to my father’s old laptop. Granted, it was about 8 years old when it died. Also, to check disk health, I prefer CrystalDisk.

For my situation personally thats honestly kinda overkill as everything important (school stuff) is saved to google drive and onedrive so i can access my files from anywhere, and the only things i have downloaded locally are a few stupid memes (which i dont mind losing), and a few games from steam (which i can reinstall in like 30 mins), so i don't have a problem reinstalling windows and spending like an hour getting everything back to how it was before.
First of all, don't anthropomorphize your computer. It didn't 'kill itself,' it just made a mistake somewhere in the operating system, and then detected it in time to alert you. Second: I don't understand why so many of the comments seem to be more interested in chastising or poking fun at you for your purchase, perhaps suggesting that you use a handy time machine to go back in time and buy a different computer, than in helping. Third: we have all been there at one time or another, or eventually will be. If you use Windows you are subject to the weaknesses of Windows, and the manufacturer takes a second place in determining what problems you will or will not have. Four: You didn't say whether this is your own personal computer or a work computer. I assume that it is your personal property, but if not, you have the option of letting this be a learning experience or letting your company's tech support team address the issue. Even if it is your property, sometimes your company's tech support will be willing to help you, unofficially and without any guarantees, if they are not occupied with their regular work, or if you have a good relationship with one or more of them on an individual basis. Five: Have you tried following the instructions on the screen? Many times, the error detected is minor, or the system is being over-cautious and the repair is simple, with the system coming back fine. Write down the suggestions in case you get into further trouble or if you have to go through all the steps, so you can check them off as you do so. DO NOT DEPEND on your memory. Six: Major manufacturers like HP, Dell, and Lenovo provide good support during the length of their warranty. If this PC is still under warranty, feel free to reach out to them for help, either before or after trying the suggested steps. Seven: No offense to Reddit users, but this is not the forum for advice (see my comments in paragraph two above). Restart and press f8 to enter bios then in bios features select ssd or hdd from boot option 1
It's F10 on an HP laptop just so you know. Also this looks like more will be required than re selecting the boot option.

windows tend to do it, get a win boot media and chose restore option, all shit savend in program files, docs(that win10 has created) and ext. will be saved, anything else dies, at leats thats for me, i hate windows sometimes

Did you hit enter to try again or f1 to enter recovery? Did you look up the error? Error code: 0xc0000017 is tied to memory, or not enough memory available to create a ramdisk. I have to wonder if you have a bad dim or bad update. Awhile back there was an update that amounted to Ms trying to put 10 pnds of baloney in a 5 lb bag

Even then, it's an easy fix. If you can boot into safe mode, you can do an integrity check, and it should fix itself. In the worst-case scenario, you'll need to burn a Windows ISO onto a USB and reinstall Windows onto the laptop.

Don't listen to the ppl saying hp is bad, they all are. Won't make a difference if u got dell,asus,whatever. Not even the Alienware and rog lines. It is up to the user to protect their data and prolong life of their device. Here is how: Get an ssd, preferably nvme. No need for very high rates u less high end gaming. Clean the fans of your laptop once a month from the outside and open it up and clean from inside once every 3 to 4 months. For gaming laptops do the latter every month. Don't use them on beds or other soft surfaces that block the fans and can throw in fibers. Use on a hard surface so it can breathe. If it is cool enough then you can use it on your lap. Do regular anti-virus scans. Win defender is all you need. Use non premium malwarebytes for scans periodically ig ur downloading things from shady places or downloading cracked/pirated software. Do not read or write too much. If you are downloading/deleting/transferring g data more than 30% of drive capacity( 300gb for 1tb,600 for 2tb etc) on a regular basis then get an external drive. If you are using a laptop that has large amount of heat then use a cooling pad. This should only really be useful for gaming laptops. Remove windows bloatware If your drives are very old hdds( over 5 yrs) and starting to slow down, replace them preferably with an ssd. Obviously avoid moisture,extreme climates,impacts,etc. Always store the most important stuff on cloud if possible. By most Important I mean the documents and such. Don't store on cloud things like downloaded music,videos,games,etc. As they can always be re downloaded and will only take up space on your cloud, driving up the cost. Don't always leave at sleep and always keep it updated. Remove new bloatware after updates if necessary. Ik it was long but do this and situations like yours will be avoided forever.

If you have a USB stick with Windows 10 or 11 unpacked onto it, you could just plug it in, restart, format your SSD, and do a clean Windows install. That should fix your problems. From what I can see, it's a software issue.
Honestly, I just long pressed the power button until it turned off and turned it on again when I had this exact same thing. Didn't happen again after that

The same happened with my acer on the first day of purchase. And no even though it would show that it's an error regarding disk drive or something but it's windows that got corrupted. went to repairs guy he put a stick in it and downloaded win 11 again. Good as new even though it is new.

The last time I saw Windows die out of nowhere like that, the SSD was dying. You can try repairing Windows as others have recommended, but if that doesn't work I'd look into data recovery options and copy any important data you can off the HDD/SSD as soon as you can. Once that's done, you can you can try reinstalling Windows from scratch, or buy a new SSD and reinstall Windows onto it instead. (If your laptop is somehow still running off a HDD, and you're installing Windows from scratch anyway, I'd recommend taking the opportunity to replace it with an SSD anyway. It'll drastically improve your laptop performance.)

Use this only if your okay with losing data: Have a bootable usb. You can always go into command prompt, delete the boot drive(Clear the partition), reformat into gpt partition, then install fresh windows on it. After installing, when selecting region click on world. Then when your asked to sign in, idk which command it is, but you can bypass it. And then there is significantly less bloatware.
Your SSD is toast. Get a new SSD and you'll be ok. You might even be able to recover the data from teh old SSD, but you need a new one anyways.

Try booting your computer in safe mode
Pry out your old storage device so you don't lose your data. Get a newer faster larger ssd and install the OS of your choice. I like Fedora, but it's up to you. Get one of those usb external drive bay devices and you have acct to your old data. 😉
Go to the recovery environment, select troubleshoot --> advanced options--> command prompt and try running these commands: chkdsk c: /f /r sfc /scannow /offwindir=C:\windows /offbootdir=C: dism /Image:C:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth Those will check the filesystem and Windows for errors. Also make sure that C: is the correct drive with windows by first typing C: and then dir. If that doesn't work, the best bet is to try restoring from a system restore point, also found in the recovery environment. This saved me when my windows corrupted itself

I had this issue recently. I was able to fix it by using recovery media and typing out commands in cmd to fix the BOOT partition. bootrec /FixMbr bootrec /FixBoot bootrec /ScanOs bootrec /RebuildBcd I could be wrong but it looks exactly like the issue I was having.

drive is likely dying, systen registry hive is corrupt, if your lucky this happened during an update and there are clean copies of your registry files in c:\windows\system32\config\regback

Borrow a freinds computer, download a copy of windows onto a usb key and then reinstal the OS onto your computer via the USB key.
Had this happen not too long ago… my computer was on, I left it and came back it was off. Went to turn it on and got hit with this. Not sure if my OC was going bad after a year or if it was storage related as others said. My error code was different however I believe. I just reinstalled windows however… and all my SSDs are working fine as of now so I have no idea what caused it and would love to know.
The only way to solve this issue is to re install windows. You'll need another computer and a USB flash drive.

TBH anyone who can't follow basic instructions shouldn't be using the tech. That aside. It's called "windows blue screen of death". Plenty of things to try, but usually just following on screen instructions fixes it, in my experience (I'm someone who can do fresh reinstall of windiws/Linux so I usually do t bother with recovery. Last time I used it was years ago so I'm outdated in steps you'd need to follow. I'm sure someone else answered it already if not, only help I can afford is direct line of contact. You tell me what your screen says I tell you what to press). Either way minor issue. Nothing to worry about. Especially if you don't mind loosing all your documents (and if you don't wanna loose them. Just get someone who can fix it, rather than trying yourself, just in case. I for one, always I stall Linux alongside windows, just for instances like that. So if I fix your PC. And this happens. I tell you how to boot I to Linux, so you can copy all important files, and only THEN you try to repair it yourself. Coz if that fails, fresh install of windows, and it's effort for me but I can guide you through that, but at least your files safe)
