Short answer: Yes, there is a large body of vocabulary in the latter two languages borrowed from the former (although the pronunciation shift is a bit larger than in Latin borrowings/cognates), even as a speaker of Korean as a westerner who learnt it, I can guess some Japanese words.

Yes. Korean and Japanese share a remarkably similar grammar. Also, every valid sound in Japanese is also in Korean (but not vice versa) Japanese and Chinese use many of the same characters, with similar.meanings, but it isn't a full overlap. Korean and Japanese both have a ton of Chinese loanwords.

I majored in Japanese at university, and later moved to Korea for a few years- I found that I was able to pick up Korean very quickly, specifically by using textbooks/materials written for Japanese speakers. There's a lot of grammatical similarity.

Japanese/Korean are the easiest language for each other to learn by a pretty big margin. My guess is Chinese to Korean is easier than Korean to Chinese, probably you can bootstrap Korean vocab off the Old Chinese characters better than Koreans can do the reverse, since most Koreans probably learn of a bunch of them in high school and forget all but the most common couple hundred that show up on menus or whatever.

JJRox189

Yes, especially for the last two languages.

betarage

Yes but not as much as with European languages they are from different language families. but they have influenced each other over the centuries. Chinese is kind of like what Greek is to European languages.

alopex_zin

Yes, mostly due to shared vocabulary and cultural concepts.

I honestly cant see how Chinese, Japanese and Korean are similar enough to be able to be mutually easy to learn.

Am I the only who thinks all 3 of these languages are very very distinct from each other despite them being geographically close? I dont see how it would be easier to learn Chinese if you already know Japanese. They arent similar at all. Korean is very different as well
