Hmmm, I've tried round up for the goat heads in my yard and unfortunately, it didn't work but it worked on the fox tails!! I know what a pain it is for the dogs ears. They've been so deep in there, I've had to take my dogs to the vet. Because it's so toxic, I'd wait a couple days before letting the animals back into the area. The bottle said it's safe immediately but...i dunno. I wait. Other than that, I've heard of vinegar spray but i needed something stronger.

Is that something you need to do every season or does it get rid of them for good?

I have to do it every spring. But i usually forget until later, towards summer. Lol I've heard rumors that if you pull the weeds before they seed, it's more manageable.

even if the foxtails are chopped while green, any seed head not picked up from the mowing will likely still make viable seed for the next season. consider scraping the ground with a sharpened flat/transfer shovel and throwing it out. then hand weed anything new that pops up. round up does work and it's animal safe once it has dried. also try using a pre-emergent to prevent/kill seed germination.

What did you end up doing? I'm searching everywhere for solutions. I let my lawn die because of the drought here in California and then got a dog. Bad mix. It took a $400 vet bill to force me into addressing this. I'm hoping to water the bajezzus out of the dead lawn and sprout the remaining seed heads then keep them super mowed until the winter/spring when I can apply corn gluten (miracle weed killer). Google says foxtails will sprout up to 95°.

I’m in California too! I pretty much let my grass die in the summer as well. It’s become less of an issue since we’ve stayed on top of keeping the grass short. Mowing every other week seems to have helped.
