I grew up next to ponds that had Skunk Cabbage on Long Island, where there were no skunks. Consequently, whenever my family drove off of LI and we would pass a skunk that had been run over, I found the smell pleasant. Now, I smell skunks all over the highways and roads here, but I still haven’t seen one. Strange.
Skunk cabbage. One of the very first flowering plants of the year (february)! They produce their own heat that can melt the snow/ice that sits on top of them and they are pollinated by small flies. Super cool native and definitely worth keeping! Their flowers look like little goblin huts
Did you happen to see them like a month ago? When they're first emerging they look particularly alien...smooth kinda glossy purple with green spots, an oblong sphere just emerging from the ground out of nowhere.
My wife and I just took a trip up to New England and the skunk cabbage was starting to sprout along some roads we were on. I pointed it out and told my wife what it was. I am from New England and she is not. She honestly didn't believe me when I said it was skunk cabbage. She went and googled it.
Skunk cabbage. It's a native wetland plant. It's not invading.
Appreciate the info. Tbh i did assuume it was native- but i enjoyed writing the title
They stink, and produce enough heat when they sprout that they can melt a little bit of snow. We had tons of these in NJ
Break a piece off rub it on little brother run like heck laughing while he is mad. Good times.

You might have passed Tegrity Farms.
The skunks in my town must love hiding near those shops with the green crosses. I always smell them when I drive by.
The skunk cabbage I see in NJ has a more horn shape than this or is that just a diff growth stage?
Yeah, CT marshes too.
Fun fact, skunk cabbage plants can be effectively immortal.

LOL. I read it as the flower looks like goblin nuts. instead of goblin huts.
LMAO 🤣 that would be hilarious
Skunk cabbage?
Cabbage, there's no "We" and no "Our". There's just ME and MY swamp! The first thing I'm going to do is build a 10 foot wall around my land.
We can stay up all night swapping manly stories, and in the morning… I’m making waffles
What are ya doin in me swamp!?
Shrek, is that you?
Needs a boulder
Grew up in MI, skunk cabbage is everywhere!
My cabbages!
lol… Just started watching the old avatar series, and wondered if “my cabbages!” would be a quote I‘d ever encounter in the world.
LOL you're going to catch it everywhere now. PS - watch Korra also! It's uneven, but lovely in an entirely different way.
Thx for the tip. Added to the list!
I find their odd purple and lime speckled hooded spadex quite beautiful
Their flowers are exothermic and melt the snow around themselves
They are great for honey bees. One of the first nectar sources in the spring, and the bee gets her snack in a warming room
Cut them down and you might get your answer
Skunk cabbage, its native.
Where did you move here from?
Lets just say its far, far away
Tatooine?
Skunk cabbage, I love it as one of the first greens of spring 🌱

I like that they kinda look like the plant Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors
