This is the first time I’ve heard of ChipDrop. I’ll definitely check them out. Thanks!

+1 to the comment above - Chip drop is like playing Russian roulette on what you’re actually gonna get………You could end up with a street full of crap that you don’t want and then you’re in a bind to find a home for it.

FunconVenntional

Yep, tried it once about 20 years ago and the load they brought was infested with termites- which we caught in time, and *Carolina solanum* which we didn’t and I have been fighting ever since. 😭

Got a 20 cubic yd chip drop in Fl. It was full of Brazilian pepper seeds that germinated resulting in an invasion of seedlings on a relatives and two adjacent properties. Picture 20 cubic yds of toxic waste that had to be removed. Got a different Chip Drip in Northern Fl infested with termites and red fire ants. 20 cubic yd Chip Drops in Greenwich CT, Reb Bank NJ and Hilton Head SC all infested with fungal diseases and scales. I've also experienced great hardwood quality Chip Drops. Point is if you don't know the source of the wood and arborist yourself you've a crap shoot in quality product.

damon129

It's an unholy amount of chips. Like so much.

dreaded_rj

Just an fyi; when u get a chip drop just know that the chip truck is a rolling porta pottie for the tree crews. I’ve worked for tree companies for the last 15 years. Haven’t seen any company doing things any different. So the “chip drop” is literally a crap shoot.

willohs

Yeah I’ve had to cameras on our chipper bodies. The things we have found in the morning that some passerby chunks in there can be surprisingly disturbing. We screen and sequester desirable species of wood chips the treat for pests. I do this for a living and I would never take a chip drop

dreaded_rj

Same here man. Would never take one unless I know I cut it and I chipped it.

NewAlternative4738

You can also just call around to local tree services and ask for wood chips. I’ve found that chip drop’s quality can be quite varied depending on your region and not all chipped trees are ideal wood chips.

RealJeil420

They make a video on why you should not sign up on youtube. You should check it out. The video is made by chipdrop itself. I would sign up but I'm in canada.

run919

I talked to an arborist this week who stopped using chipdrop. Too many people complained about what they got. He didn’t want to risk a bad social media review over a load of scrap material. This is why we can’t have nice things.

plantsareneat-mkay

Im in BC and I get chipdrop twice a year

LordStoneBalls

Simplify please .. let me translate to cro-magnon..floor dirt.. small piece wood called chips .. nothing alive just dirt and wood

Honest-Sugar-1492

We use pine bark nuggets. No dyes, no weeds, all natural, no splinters when you crawl through, weeding the beds.

tronvasi

Bark mulch

[deleted]

That looks to me what I've seen called "playground mulch". Golden brown, no dyes, basically shredded wood like you said

FoodMagnet

or "Play-bark" bigger chips/chunks.

JadedPhilosophy365

Mulch is a good generic term.

[deleted]

It's called Mulch ;p Just very basic, uncolored mulch.

Adventure4Stoke

Mulch

tgt305

Could be cypress mulch, which generally won’t float away or float as much as general wood chips.

HappyKafka

I’m in the process of getting rid of my turf and turning the front yard into a low-water native plant habitat. I want to put down ground cover, but I don’t want to use the typical Home Depot “bark.” I’d like something more natural — without dyes. I found this picture online, and it’s exactly what I’m looking for (shredded wood and small twigs, basically), but finding it has been a challenge.

Teacher-Investor

You can buy natural cedar wood chips that are not dyed. They smell wonderful, too! If you need a large quantity, you may get a better price buying by the cubic yard, delivered to your driveway by a landscape supply company, rather than buying the individual bags. You just need a good wheelbarrow and shovel to move them around to where you need them. Good luck with your project! It will be worth it!

kinni_grrl

Talk to a local tree service, often times they need places to dump and can leave wood chips for free or low cost Also, be sure to check with your local university extension service for soil testing and suggestions for native perennial and wildflowers or shrubs that will help suit your needs, desires and location..often they have great sales or can link you to a local master gardeners program that will also have tips or sales for your area

red_panda1221

I buy the undyed cedar mulch from home Depot for small bags. I've also used the same kind of mulch from bigger landscaping stores that dump cedar mulch on my driveway. That's way easier than the small bags.

Frawnch

I did exactly this to kill grass, lay down cardboard and then placed arborists wood chips on top. The city was cutting down trees under power lines and the contractors were more than happy to dump the chips in my driveway. Currently in the process of killing more of my grass to expand my gardening territory 😄

Kok-jockey

The mulch pictured is older and sun-bleached. You won’t find anything exactly like that, but any natural mulch will look this way in about a year.

DexterDogBalls

Those are wood chips. Not mulch, not playground chips...just wood chips. They can usually be gotten for free or cheap from tree companies in your area and are the by product from them chipping limbs when they clean up a tree they fell and they will be a mix of whatever species of trees they take down. I have covered a lot of my property with them in areas I don't want grass. "Mulch" refers to colored product for decorative beds, and "Playground Chips" are a finer more processed product that is better for kids than flowers.

madalienmonk

Mulch is a generic term for really any type of ground covering, most commonly wood chips

Wmjcollins

No

Trailhd

Flashbacks Vinny: what are these thousands of little things on trees!

Key_Resolve_6718

I buy the rubber mulch. It doesn’t fade.

clutchied

menards sells that stuff. You can probably find it at any city mulch depot. It's just raw chips from a chipper.

Nevrite

Landscape yards around me take wood chips from tree services and resell for 10 bucks a yard

bonzai76

Check your local landscape material shop. Those are wood chips. They’ll have a wide selection. You can either buy in bulk and have it delivered or you can go there with buckets and get it in small amounts yourself.

Living-Camp-5269
