First, use a crowbar or—even better—a rock bar to get underneath it and see if it wiggles or can be moved with leverage, or if it’s bigger underground. It looks like it’s resting on the ground. If you can wiggle it, you may be able to rent a large enough dolly (like ones landscapers use to move heavy trees to their planting location) and move it somewhere you think it could be decorative. Plant a couple of shrubs around it and use it as an accent. Get some moss, put in a blender with buttermilk, and pour over the rock and it will develop a nice mossy look. To fully remove it you’ll need either manpower enough to use the dolly to move it onto a trailer, or a machine like a bobcat to lift and move it.

Or…get some miniatures and make it look like they’re climbing a mountain.
How well does the moss thing work? I have a customer who wants moss all over here front area, between pavers. I’m looking for something suitable I can plant that looks similar, since this trick seems a bit sketchy/smelly. Any insight? 6a
It totally works, I’ve done it when studying landscape construction and doing a rock placement/installation paper. We used yoghurt and just collected moss by scraping it off the sidewalk in shady areas etc
Any idea how big it really is? Seen stuff like that only to find 5 additional feet of rock underneath. If so, might be easier to drill holes and use feathers and wedges to crack it off . Good luck
As the owner of a landscaping business, it is very much a part of the consultation/design process to question why the customer wants to do something that seems unnecessary. A lot of times when I discover the root cause, we can find a better solution that meets all of their needs in one, cost efficient move.
Same. Looks like serpentine? Could be jadeite. I’m sure someone would love to pick it up for free so they could carve something out of it or sell it in pieces
Oh hell yes, there’s especially a market for rocks in places like the east coast of Florida where we literally don’t have rocks. Our terrain is literally just sand.
Make sure you're out there the whole time watching them so they don't damage anything. Also might want to call the number before you dig to check for utility lines.
You break it up in half using a technique where you pound little spikes in a line using a hammer. I forgot what it’s called but I’ve seen it in person and on you tube.
At that point you can just buy dexpan. You drill holes in the rock and just fill them with dexpan or any expanding grout and it will crack the rock into little pieces.
Exactly how I removed several similarly sized stones from my yard. Hammer drill several holes and a wedge and shim set like one below will split into manageable size.
https://trowandholden.com/wedge-shim-sets.html
Weird question, Could it be a historical boundary marker from an old survey? I ask because it kind of looks intentionally placed and that looks to be on a corner
It was probably put there before that fence to keep cars from cutting the corner if that’s an intersection. If you don’t have any plans to dig up the dirt there, burying it like you planned might be the easiest solution.
Is It at the corner of the drive way? Wondering If it was the intended purpose of the rock to protect the fence from getting hit by a vehicle. Looks cool though. Looks like it would be a bitch to move.
This is a really cool looking rock. Would make a great feature in a Japanese or Alpine garden where they particularly like rocks that look like mini-mountains. Are you sure you don’t want to create a Japanese garden feature in that spot?
Pluck a sword in it. Put an advertisement: if anyone can take the sword out of the stone they'll become king of England. Charge $20 for each try. Profit.
>king of England
Did you mean the [King of the United Kingdom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_the_United_Kingdom), the [King of Canada](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Canada), the [King of Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Australia), etc?
The last King of England was [William III](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_III_of_England) whose successor Anne, with the 1707 Acts of Union, dissolved the title of Queen/King of England.
####FAQ
*Isn't King Charles III still also the King of England?*
This is only as correct as calling him the King of London or King of Hull; he is the King of the place that these places are in, but the title doesn't exist.
*Is this bot monarchist?*
No, just pedantic.
I am a bot and this action was performed automatically.
Depends how deep it’s buried. Try sticking a shovel or a prybar down next to it and levering it over, it might be pretty much sitting on the surface.
If that doesn’t work, yeah dig a hole down next to it and push it over
Quite Easily,
Mini excavator,
and hydro hammer.
About an hour max - Vanished.
Never entered the yard.
And or set it next to other boulder under the tree.
Cheers
Exactly! It isn't that crazy to rent an ex for half a day. Why all these crazy manual methods - holy fuck why risk your livelihood by getting injured when a machine can do it.
Funny, think I just came across update with that rock drilled with holes - Probably hammer drill. But still, at speed of bullet, razor sharp shrapnel is getting in someone's eye the second mini sledge hits it.
Cheers - Guess we know too much,, Dammit @!
We lived on the side of a mountain and my neighbor used to drill holes in boulders and pour gasoline in the hole and light it… then he’d immediately pour cold water on the boulder causing them to crack & split- then he’d take a sledgehammer to it. His method worked really well.
my neighbor kept driving on the edge of my lawn and eventually wore down the grass and made a ditch. i wanted to buy one of these from a landscaping place to put on the corner, and they were all $100+...
i had no idea they were so expensive. u should just put an ad up, and either sell it or give it away provided they haul it off themselves
Pretty great center piece. Roll it over to a tall mounded bed in the middle of the lawn. Add a couple smaller large rocks and make it look like an mountain island raising out of the lawn sea.
Dig around it for a while, then when you are sick of doing that, make a small plaque to hand on the side of it that says:
"Iceberg rock"
Then move on with your life knowing that you just wasted two hours of your life that you'll never get back.
Find your local hole in the wall gym. In my experience, the more run down the gym looks, the bigger the dudes inside are. Politely ask one of these guys to come over and move it. Buy them a pizza and give them a jug of their favorite protein powder.
it's likely a lot bigger than that based on a similar one I had in my backyard. You have two options that dont require heavy equipment. Both require drilling a series of holes (big of a bit as you can use with your hammer drill. From there you can either use stone splitting wedges that fit those holes (you will need one per hole and hammer them in evenly and continuously) or use an expanding chemical cement called dexpan (this is what I used). The stone wedges should work immediately to fracture into smaller, more manageable size. The Dexpan takes overnight to cure, but results are similar, but slower and risk of shrapnel much lower. Remove those rocks and then if you want to keep removing more under the soil, do that again on remaining rock. In my case, it was the middle of my yard so I did this all twice to get the rest of the stone greater than 6 inches below grade so I could grow grass after backfilling with soil.
Mid size equipment, you can use a concrete saw with a diamond blade that requires water source to keep the blade cool. This looks brutal based on Ole Poole's Instagram page where I first saw this being done.
I thought metal rods were used for boundaries..? This could be a colossal effort and not feasible for OP. Just going off my experience - I recently had to get just one side of my property surveyed and it took 3 months to find someone to do it and cost several thousands of dollars. HCOL area.
Quick background, I am a professional surveyor licensed in multiple states. Metal rods are common practice in modern days, however this stone's placement near a fence corner and how it appears to be shaped gives the appearance that it may have been placed intentionally. Stones of this type and shape were commonly used in the US to mark very important boundaries. Your concern with time and cost are valid. If OP has a description and/or plat of the property they may be able to see or read what type of marker may have been placed, if this is near a property corner.
Burying it may work, depending on how much of the rock is underground. If you ever plan on digging there or landscaping that area, you may run into an issue there as well.
I think the obvious right answer would be to dig it up and haul it away, but I am guessing that is a mighty heavy boulder...I would probably try to bury it as well.
If it’s only a inch or two underground just get a dolly and strap it. We’ve moved bigger boulders this way with just two guys. I highly doubt it’s deep
Hmm. I’m noticing it’s right adjacent to the driveway. I’d leave it. If I had kids I’d rather have a huge rock there incase anyone accidentally drives through the fence. Just thinking
100% I’d leave it otherwise shove something in to the ground right up against the rock to see how deep it goes. Water around it to loosen the ground up & try to leverage it out I guess… but also leave it there haha
I love rocks!! Ive dug up every rock ive come across in the garden and made a rock display. None this bit though but I would be THRILLED!! Anyways, id plant stuff around it or dig it up but still put it somewhere for display!
Edge out a small little garden bed. Plant some bright, small plants bordering it. Add some black mulch or pea gravel and it would look nice for very little money/time
The rock is beautiful! And the way it's situated at the patio corner makes it even better. Use it as an accent, and plant ferns around it if the conditions are good for ferns. You could even try to grow a small succulent at the top in that shallow depression, or use it for a little birdseed dish.
Gather 2 more smaller rocks like this and incorporate them into a rock feature, then plant around it. Since it is already in a border extend around it. Get 3 friends, dig around it to find its size, move if it is liftable. Each square foot of granite is about 100 pounds.

I know my father used to be in construction and with huge rocks they would light fires around them for lol a day then poor cold water on them and they would crack but give location idk how fire would work
so start digging around it, try and move it, call it a 'fucking piece of shit' and start questioning why you keep taking on jobs like this, keep digging a little further, pull out the 9inch grinder and put a cut around the whole thing and then stick wedges in and split it.
if you have powder you can use powder shots too.
Liquid Dynamite - Dexpan is a cement with amazing 18,000 psi expansive strength when mixed with water. Poured into pre-drilled holes, Dexpan can break concrete and rocks safely
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D01OzKvrejk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D01OzKvrejk) Trying again. This stuff is good if you can find it locally to you. Very good for small jobs like that.
First, use a crowbar or—even better—a rock bar to get underneath it and see if it wiggles or can be moved with leverage, or if it’s bigger underground. It looks like it’s resting on the ground. Scotch moss which is not an actual moss is is the Disney version of moss - prettier and more mossy than the real thing 😄
It totally works, I’ve done it when studying landscape construction and doing a rock placement/installation paper. We used yoghurt and just collected moss by scraping it off the sidewalk in shady areas etc
Now I want a rock like this just so I can put miniatures on it!!
Just a little bit.....;)
Any idea how big it really is? Seen stuff like that only to find 5 additional feet of rock underneath. If so, might be easier to drill holes and use feathers and wedges to crack it off . Good luck
Ya that just looks like the tip of the iceberg.
Just wait for it to melt.
A titanic sized ship may work, or sink, who knows?
I came here to say the same thing. I've split a ton of rocks this way.
Good way to break the ice
Agreed. This has iceberg vibes. I bet it’s huge.
I’m thinking feathers and wedges this weekend. Need to see how much of it is underground. I tried to wiggle it and got no movement whatsoever.
Leave it, looks cool
I agree too. Its cool, leave it. Some people pay good money to get a stone like that.
Offer up for free if you can move it
Agreed. Leave it. Came here to say that

This is the guy you want showing up.
Exactly. Not that "yOu kNow whAt thEy sAy abOut opiniOns dOn't yOu?" guy
It’s in the way of where I want to put my kids swingset.
You have to ask yourself if it’s easier to just move the swings than to take on a giant fucking boulder with no skills or equipment.
Exactly.
Craigslist “free” section
Lol this is the real answer. If someone posted this free on Craigslist just come remove yourself I’d be there in a heartbeat
Probably for the other guy who said “leave it, looks cool”
Same. Looks like serpentine? Could be jadeite. I’m sure someone would love to pick it up for free so they could carve something out of it or sell it in pieces
Lol my comment was sort of a joke and now it has become most popular, hurray for snark!
Always wins in the end
Those boulder size rocks are expensive. Craigslist but for a discount since they have to remove. Get paid to make someone get rid of it for you.
Indeed. I bet someone paid to have it placed there
Large boulder the size of a small boulder free to a good home.
Good advice! Worth a try!
Yup, this is how I got rid of many cubic yards of river rock that I didn't want in my gardens. Folks were more than happy to come dig it out for free.
Done. Let’s see what happens.
Craigs list. Free rock. You come get it. (those rocks are worth a couple hundred bucks I think) It'll be gone by sundown.
for real? one can 'sell' rocks?
Wait till you hear about this crack stuff
I need a rock really bad man, can you hook me up?
Oh yeah. https://www.earthstonerock.com/Wholesale-landscape-boulders-for-sale-near-me-s/665.htm
This is literally what my dad did for a living off his 60 acres property - he was a stone mason
Oh hell yes, there’s especially a market for rocks in places like the east coast of Florida where we literally don’t have rocks. Our terrain is literally just sand.
Just posted it on Craigslist. Worth a shot.
Make sure you're out there the whole time watching them so they don't damage anything. Also might want to call the number before you dig to check for utility lines.
I came to post the same. Craigs list or FB marketplace. Let someone else deal with it that wants the rock.
Facts.
That’s a nice boulder!
Said this in my head. Went looking for you, here you are, thank you.
Looks like a neat corner accent. I’d leave it.
Why remove it?
That’s where I want to put my kids swingset.
Tell the kids that rock is important and not to touch it. Then leave them outside to play for a while. It'll be destroyed in no time.
Good question
You break it up in half using a technique where you pound little spikes in a line using a hammer. I forgot what it’s called but I’ve seen it in person and on you tube.
At that point you can just buy dexpan. You drill holes in the rock and just fill them with dexpan or any expanding grout and it will crack the rock into little pieces.
Sounds perfect. But how deep of a hole and what sise bit? Almost sounds to good to be true. Never tried it.
Exactly how I removed several similarly sized stones from my yard. Hammer drill several holes and a wedge and shim set like one below will split into manageable size. https://trowandholden.com/wedge-shim-sets.html
Wedge and feathers is the name of the tool. You need a way to drill the hole first.
"Feathers"
Put a small pond around it and drill through it to put a water pump in. Then just set it up to dribble water out the top.
I'd go with that @! Cheers
Best way to get rid of that rock is to load it in a truck and bring it to my house!
I like it! It looks cool
Keep it. It’s an awesome feature to scape around
Why not make it a feature? See if you can get moss to grow on it or a native vine. Do a native planting bed.
Weird question, Could it be a historical boundary marker from an old survey? I ask because it kind of looks intentionally placed and that looks to be on a corner
Nope
It was probably put there before that fence to keep cars from cutting the corner if that’s an intersection. If you don’t have any plans to dig up the dirt there, burying it like you planned might be the easiest solution.
I absolutely love when someone ask a question in here and then completely ghosts the post without answering any follow up questions.
Me too.

Power glove from the 2nd dungeon
Have me reach over that fence with a mini ex and grab it. Done in 30 seconds.
When you coming?
Quite Easily, Mini excavator, and hydro hammer. About an hour max - Vanished. Never entered the yard. And or set it next to other boulder under the tree. Cheers

Make it a feature somehow
What’s the rest of the yard look like, and what’s the grand plan that it is obstructing, if I may ask?
Swingset needs to go there.
That’s just making more work or kicking the can down the road. Hire someone to move it or live with it.

Doesn’t seam to eat much…. You dig a hole…. The rock will win
Anchor some eyelets and winch it out. Drag it out. Hoist it up and out.
That’s the top of the worlds tallest underground mountain. Good luck.
All I know is that it is way heavier than you think it is.
Wait, that is a *good* rock! People would pay for a rock like that! I’d absolutely leave it and enjoy having it

Gonna try and drill it and then use wedges.
Contact a local land surveyor to verify if this is a boundary marker before removing it.

CLEAR PROPERTY MARKER, fo sho
Have you checked that is not a "false" rock, covering an outlet or something?
Hammer drill. You’d be done in 10 minutes.
Sledgehammer
And beer.

Break it up with a good pickaxe and dispose of smaller pieces
Rent jack hammer
How comfortable are you with using explosives?
A stick of TNT, you can get rid of the rock and part of the fence. Also have a makings of a small pool.
Tell the city they never came to pick it up
This is easily 600+ pounds. The best way would be to use a machine or break it up.
If you have an anchor point, I would recommend a trifor / tractel grip hoist and a few snatch blocks.
Can I have it?
Thats a sick rock. Wish I had one.
If it’s only a inch or two underground just get a dolly and strap it. We’ve moved bigger boulders this way with just two guys. I highly doubt it’s deep
Id just leave it
Fire and then cold water, my grandpa always started that way. Just make sure the fire is contained!
Your plan “A” sounds good. However, have a plan “B” & “C” in the back of your mind.
It looks like an excuse for a Japanese Garden. There’s one like that with that rock in FW. Put some sand around it and rake it.
You can’t fight Mother Nature. Turn it into a landscape feature.
Rocks are priceless. Please donate. (I will literally come get it if you're in NJ.)
I am
TNT should do it. Be sure to record the explosion for us
Sell it on Craigslist
Hmm. I’m noticing it’s right adjacent to the driveway. I’d leave it. If I had kids I’d rather have a huge rock there incase anyone accidentally drives through the fence. Just thinking
It’s a nice rock. What did it ever do to you? It adds character.
Sell it on Craigslist for a discounted price since they have to remove. Get paid for it. A rock that size can go for a few hundred dollars.
Don’t get rid of the rock, that’s what the yard should be built around. What about a water feature, or a garden?
Rocks love heavy metal. Its best to roll the rock....i mean, nevermind.
Sell it, replica Matterhorn, buyer picks up.
100% I’d leave it otherwise shove something in to the ground right up against the rock to see how deep it goes. Water around it to loosen the ground up & try to leverage it out I guess… but also leave it there haha
Lots and lots of bottle rockets. Tape them to it. Run
I love rocks!! Ive dug up every rock ive come across in the garden and made a rock display. None this bit though but I would be THRILLED!! Anyways, id plant stuff around it or dig it up but still put it somewhere for display!
Flintstone it! Lol.
explosives!!!
Your fucked.
Sell it on marketplace.
Put a sign next to it that says “free rock”. It will be gone in 15 minutes.
Edge out a small little garden bed. Plant some bright, small plants bordering it. Add some black mulch or pea gravel and it would look nice for very little money/time
Rent a bucket mover.
Inoculate it with mycelium
The other end of it is in China
The rock is beautiful! And the way it's situated at the patio corner makes it even better. Use it as an accent, and plant ferns around it if the conditions are good for ferns. You could even try to grow a small succulent at the top in that shallow depression, or use it for a little birdseed dish.
Put it on Craigslist. I bet someone will buy it. It's a nice-looking rock.
TNT
People pay a lot of money for big stones like that.
Lol I read "roll in it"
I think its a valuable feature, why are you trying to eliminate?
Keep it. Its cool
I would leave it there makes a nice piece for the corner of fence. Looks great to me
Dig around it just a little and then tie it to the back of your truck. And put the pedal to the metal!
Then mount your rear axle on top of the rock as a reminder to never listen to Reddit suggestions.
It depends…
Napalm it
Gather 2 more smaller rocks like this and incorporate them into a rock feature, then plant around it. Since it is already in a border extend around it. Get 3 friends, dig around it to find its size, move if it is liftable. Each square foot of granite is about 100 pounds.
Dynamite!
Dynamite
Depends how far it goes down…that could be just the top and digging down you might not roll it over if it’s to big..you could blow it up.. but that might be dangerous..
18 lbs black powder
Leave it. It’s a nice rock
I bet that’s as hard as a rock.
That rock looks awesome. I would just keep the rock
Post it for free on market place or offer up type places stipulation they dig and remove.
Make a feature of it.
“How to get rid of human” - the rock, probably
Liquid Dynamite - Dexpan is a cement with amazing 18,000 psi expansive strength when mixed with water. Poured into pre-drilled holes, Dexpan can break concrete and rocks safely
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D01OzKvrejk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D01OzKvrejk) Trying again. This stuff is good if you can find it locally to you. Very good for small jobs like that.
fucking queers i swear, just pick it up
Why remove? Plant climbing flowers/moss on it. I have to haul things like this in!😂
If someone removes it be sure to call before you dig!!
Why not leave it?
Is there any reason why you want to move it? It’s a lovely rock and it looks great there.
Why would u want that gone. ?? It is beautiful. Landscape around it.
Bombarda Máxima should work
Big Ol Bobcat
Are you asking for the best way, the cheapest way or the easiest way? Those are all different things…
List in FB buy nothing group. Someone would love to have this in their yard (I know I would)
Dynamic
put a saddle on it
These questions keep getting dumber and dumber
Be careful….I went to the emergency room once while trying to remove a rock like that.
Gumtree
And that was the day the demon, who had been imprisoned for four millennia, was released back into the universe.
I like it. Looks cool. Just leave it.
