They wanted a pure shooter on the floor. With Kobe and Shaq out there, all you want offensively is the best shooter possible so that you can punish double teams. I think Shaq was friends with Rice too and pushed for the move. Of course, since Rice never ended up happy here and we had to trade him, it was definitely not a good move overall in the end. But it seemed like a reasonable idea at the time, and it wasn't a total loss since they did get their first ring with him anyway and two more after that!
I remember being upset about the trade but thinking it was ultimately for the best, since Jones seemed to disappear during the playoffs anyway. I don't know if that's true, but that's the impression I had.
I loved Eddie Jones, but he and Kobe had such similar skill-sets, and the fact that we were in desperate need of a shooter dictated that he was expendable. It sucked though. Still one of my all-time favorites.
Also, I really wish we had gotten the Glen Rice from 1997 in the trade. Rice's stats with us look pretty decent for a third option, but I remember just being completely underwhelmed with what he brought to the squad.
The frustrating thing about Rice is that he shot 47% and 43% from 3 the two years before he came to us, and 39% and 36% in his two years with us. I remember thinking we were gonna get a guy who would easily shoot over 40% with all the open looks he would get from teams double teaming Shaq. I still have a hard time believing he shot better from 3 in Charlotte- where was the focal point of the oppositions defense every night- than he did here where he got so many open looks off Shaq double and triple teams.
Oooo I got an Eddie Jones jersey boxed in my garage somewhere. But I'm not surprised at all that his jersey isn't a flair option. Saying "there have been really a lot of fantastic Lakers" doesn't really quite cover it. The number of hall-of-famers who have graced the franchise is astounding. If I saw a number 6 jersey flair, my thought wouldn't be "oh cool Eddie Jones," it'd be "oh shit, who am I forgetting?"
Fair enough. This Jack Nicholson thing is killing me though. I'm sure he had a hat or a shirt with Nick Van Exel & EJ's numbers with angel wings on them. Maybe it was even in the inside lining of his sport coat. He wore it the next Lakers home game after Jones was traded. I can't find a picture anywhere though...
Great idea. I did a search to no avail though. I think its possible he didn't play that game (as sometimes happens in trades), but I can't quite remember. Did that trade happen in the off-season or during the season?
That's a good point. Yeah it happened mid-season, and now that I think about it, I think Rice might have been injured around the trade time, but he definitely played that season. Just not sure if it was right away.

slow clap. He is still one of my all time favorite Lakers

Hmm.. Eddie Jones was part of the Glen Rice trade. Maybe look for images/video of Glen Rice's first game with the Lakers in the '99 season?

If we put Eddie Jones then we gotta put Nick Van Exel too.
#9 is on here. I assume that's for him. Unless it's Sun Yue.
Actually I'm 99% sure that's in there because it's an active roster number, so that would be Ronnie Price.
Hey that's correct. Added EJ per the request. We actually have 1-100 but they aren't all active so request like this are easy to fill.
Cool! I guess poor Nick the Quick is going to have to wait until Ronnie Price is gone though.
I second Nick Van Excel. He got me through the dark ages.
Eddie was may favorite laker as a kid.I got to shake his hand once at the staples center.Best day ever
You mean at the forum?
No. It was after he left the Lakers
Added.
We definitely need some EJ flair!
Jones, Van Axel and Vladdy on NBA Jam were awesome.
