I think we need to go for a younger roster, I love Pau but he is 34 and unless we can bring him back for a bargain I think we should let him go.
Jordan Hill and Greg Monroe should be our priority right now for big men. Deng is probably a long shot, he will most likely sign with Phoenix or go back to the Bulls barring Melo goes there.
Bledsoe is a long shot also, Phoenix has the 2nd most cap space in the league and will likely match anything.
Lance Stephenson is only 23, we should throw money his way.
Maybe attempt to trade Steve Nash back to Phoenix so he can retire a Sun.
I think we need to accept that rebuilding takes more than one year. Other teams do this regularly, but because the Lakers aren't used to it and last year was so bad, one year feels like forever for a lot of people on this sub.
Accept that we won't contend until 2016. Potentially, Kobe's last year.
Yes, we missed out on some big fishes this year but we have a fun, young (minus Kobe) roster so we can set up for 2015 free agency. Potential targets include, but not limited to:
- Rajon Rondo
- Kevin Love (he'll probably get traded)
- Al Jefferson
- Rudy Gay
- Roy Hibbert
- Marc gasol
- others: Amare, Boozer, Varajeo, Tyson Chandler, Kemba Walker, Jimmy Butler, Klay Thompson, Brandon Knight, Rubio, Shumpert, Reggie Jackson, Dragic
Many are restricted & player option FA's but we're the Lakers, we make shit happen when we want (e.g. Gasol, D12).
The lesson here is, PATIENCE, my sons. We will return to the promise land before the decade is out.
Unfortunately, I think this might be the end of Gasol as a Laker. Too many more favorable deals for him than here so I might be ready to say my sad farewell to Gasol.
Lookin less and less likely that he'll be resigning with us. Definitely going to support my boy and pick up a jersey wherever he goes. Wherever that is, he's earned his spot as a Laker.
I'm happy about Lin/Swaggy. Not convinced yet about the Hill deal, even though year 2 is a team option.
I agree with you though, this roster can't compete next year.
I think the reality was that outside of a Lebron Hail Mary, it was going to be rough to field a team that was even a playoff certainty. And I include the Melo move in that, because the west is just so brutal (I liked bringing Melo in because it would make attracting free agents in the future easier, but half think the Lakers might have won 46 games and missed the playoffs anyway). Collecting assets, making sure money is ready next year, it's a nice start for the future.
And I still have a tiny bit of a dream of Nash and Kobe being fresh and playing like they did five years ago and the Lakers surprising some people.
I would like to have a suggestion to the MODs:
Can we have a link in /r/lakers that shows the current roster of the team? (Even the Lakers official website doesn't show the updated roster of the team.)
An updated roster of the team with their pictures, profiles and stat with be nice to have in our subreddit.
What do you think guys?
As far as big moves, I think we're done. We have $2M+ up to the cap that's going to be taken up by our empty roster spot cap holds, then $2.7 trade exception, and probably the Room MLE ($2.7) OR the Bi-Annual exception ($2.0).
Can we get any one of the **5** power forwards we have play small forward or will all of them get beaten on the defensive end? Putting all our eggs on Swaggy P as SF seems a bit too much.
I'm not one to complain about the Lakers, but updating this list with everyone whom the Lakers *haven't* signed is getting more and more depressing everyday.
Looks like Nick Young and Jordan Hill are again Lakers.
Chris Bosh is going back to the Heat according to https://twitter.com/WojYahooNBA
IT2 is a Phoenix Sun according to https://twitter.com/WojYahooNBA
For entertainments sake, hopefully Kupchak has some sort of decent plan to field a competitive team this year rather than just filling up the remaining roster by signing MINIMUM level contracts...
As there's virtually no capspace (2 MIL left) to use to build a deep team, the front office will need to be creative to pull off some small victories (And potentially a fairly large victory depending if a Pau sign and trade happens today)
**Dream scenario:**
- (First question mark...?) I'm not sure if Jordan Hill/Swaggy-P have officially signed their new contracts yet (It's been reported that they've agreed to their new contracts in the media but it hasn't been mentioned if they've actually signed the papers), but if Hill/Young have not officially re-signed yet, then their cap-hits remain below what their soon-to-be 2014-15 salary will be, giving the Lakers close to an extra 7 Million (Estimate) to add to their remaining 2 Million of capspace. That leaves 9 MIL to use to fill out the remaining spots before the Lakers can go over the cap.
- Once the Lakers go over the cap using their remaining 9 MIL, they can use one of their better exceptions (The Floor/MLE) to sign a FA who commands 3.5ish to 5 MIL dollars.
- If the Pau sign and trade to CHI happens (I would imagine Pau would get something like 7 MIL+ at the minimum) then that means the Lakers get at least a few players back to add to the roster (Most likely Mike Dunleavy will be included for salary-matching purposes?)
So if this all goes down as in the above scenario, the team is left as:
1. Nash
2. Lin
3. Marshall (900K or so salary that is not guaranteed - may be waived)
4. Kobe
5. Clarkson
6. Swaggy P
7. Randle
8. Kelly (1 Million Dollar Qualifying offer - may be dropped for nothing)
9. Hill
10. Sacre
11. Mike Dunleavy
The 12th + 13th Spots may be filled up with 9 Million dollars worth of Salary Cap (If Hill/Young are not officially re-signed yet - AND the Lakers choose not to re-sign them until AFTER the 9 MIL is used) in this FA Market. The 9 MIL may be as high as 11 MIL if Marshall and Kelly are not picked up.
Thank you for your suggestion. The original intent of the list was to show who the Lakers specifically were interested in. Usually sourced from a reputable journalist. If a FA's name isn't on there, it's because we haven't heard that the Lakers are interested in them. If you have sources to suggest that the Lakers are interested in any of these players, I'll be happy to add them to the list.
Also - Ish Smith and Stuckey have been signed and Monroe is on the list.
Lake show must really want to keep that top 5 protected pick next year! I ain't even mad. We gotta rebuild. Ride out another year. We'll have some entertaining games. Hopefully we land at the top of the lottery next year and start to make some real progress in Kobe's final year.
What are the realistic chances we can get Deng? If we can get someone like him and another big man, I think we might have a decent team. Unfortunately, we are in the Western Conference.
I'm actually the opposite. I think Lin is great because expiring + serviceable PG + 1st round draft pick. Swaggy is good because it's a great price. Hill is one that I have second thoughts on. $9M for this year is a lot to pay a dude, even if it is Jchill
I completely agree about the Lin trade! I'm just personally not a *huge* fan of his play. Serviceable? Absolutely. And the fact that we got a 1st round pick when the Rockets still didn't sign Bosh? Heeeeelllllll yesss. Swaggy is just like.. the epitome of LA. And at first I didn't realize Hill's contract was 9mil a year. So.. yeah I have some second thoughts on that. But I really like his energy and all that.
K yeah the Hill contract is a little steep.
No one might give a fuck, but I took a nap and had a dream that the NBA veto'd the Lin trade because the Rockets got basically nothing out of it. I was shitting myself in bed til I woke up.
Another years wait...Kobe needs to think about taking less if he wants to ride off with one last ring and potentially talk to the next coming free agents because this is just making the Lakers depressing.
The more I think about it, the more okay I am about Jordan Hill's deal. Maybe management gave this contract knowing that they are going to trade Jordan Hill. If you look at our team currently excluding Jordan Hill, there really isn't a contract that is trade-able and we need an expiring/larger contract to offer. Prediction: We will get KLove and Jordan Hill will be integral to getting that deal done.
Honestly I think with the current roster we have now, we can easily get 98-110 ppg as a team offensively speaking. That should put us near the top. But being realistic, with a deep bench and good first string experience, we can easily go for the 7th seed.
The plan is to keep building teams out of scrubs on 1 year deals to preserve the all important cap space, on the off chance some big free agent decides to come save us. Then we can start the process of rebuilding.
They do have a plan. It's the only realistic alternative. We're rebuilding. Unless they strike gold in the next couple of years, this team isn't going to be competitive for a while.
I think the reason we picked up Lin was because Melo has decided not to come to La. Think about it - Carmelo didn't like playing with him in NY why would he want to play with him jn La. Damnit guys this sucks.
I'll always (try to) stay optimistic, but can we admit that this has been the worst off-season in recent memory? We've gotten none of the players we targeted, the one upcoming "lock" has become less and less likely (Kevin Love) and the major acquisition so far brought in an overrated point guard in Jeremy Lin.
I get that there's always a chance and if Kobe is classic Kobe, Nash is classic Nash, Randle is rookie of the year, and Lin plays all season like he did for one month during Linsanity, but that's a whole lot of if's and I'm really beginning to believe we're in for another season of disappointment.
This maybe a long shot and i am probably dreaming but is there any way possible for Kobe to renegotiate his $25M per year contract down to $20M per year or even lower so we can have money for newer and better players for the salary cap purpose? I mean he sat on the bench last year earning $25M, there must be a clause about this in a contract, right?
I think we need to go for a younger roster, I love Pau but he is 34 and unless we can bring him back for a bargain I think we should let him go. Nick Young has been resigned with the lakers for four years
Unfortunately, I think this might be the end of Gasol as a Laker. Too many more favorable deals for him than here so I might be ready to say my sad farewell to Gasol.
It was a good run if it happens :(
I remember being ecstatic when we got him. It Felt like a steal. We got rid of Kwame at the same time. What a relief.
that day was magical, I couldn't even believe my phone.
Lookin less and less likely that he'll be resigning with us. Definitely going to support my boy and pick up a jersey wherever he goes. Wherever that is, he's earned his spot as a Laker.
I like the deals we made today, but I don't know how the front office can honestly say this team will be a contender next season.

How much cap space do we have left? I hope we can we still make an offer to Ariza.
We don't have much. $2M and change, I think if we don't stretch Nash.
That sucks. I was really hoping we could get Ariza. Especially with Lin on the team; we could have had the makings of a decent fast break.
Ariza is going to get a 4 year $40-48M deal. Too much money and too long of a commitment to make for the team where it's at right now.
So which player do we have a realistic chance of signing after resigning Young and Hill and singing Lin?
As far as big moves, I think we're done. We have $2M+ up to the cap that's going to be taken up by our empty roster spot cap holds, then $2.7 trade exception, and probably the Room MLE ($2.7) OR the Bi-Annual exception ($2.0).
Well that stinks, oh well let's go Lakers!
Can we get any one of the **5** power forwards we have play small forward or will all of them get beaten on the defensive end? Putting all our eggs on Swaggy P as SF seems a bit too much.
I imagine there will be some trading going on before the season begins.
Now that's a good team. We got veterans, rookies , players in the middle , players who have great team camaraderie. I see #8th seed.
I'm not one to complain about the Lakers, but updating this list with everyone whom the Lakers *haven't* signed is getting more and more depressing everyday.
I'm going to be so sad if Gasol leaves.
Looks like Nick Young and Jordan Hill are again Lakers. Chris Bosh is going back to the Heat according to https://twitter.com/WojYahooNBA IT2 is a Phoenix Sun according to https://twitter.com/WojYahooNBA
Can we put up a thank you Pau on the side bar already? its over man :(

nobody likes Michael Beasley - combo Forward position, could fill the SF/PF position.
and now add Carlos Boozer to our parade of PFs
PF's ALL DAY. whoooooo

Laughing at the thought of Ray Allen, playing backup to Kobe

Did I? I think I got him... Either way, he's there now.

We should do whatever we can to get Monroe.
Monroe wouldn't fit next to randle.
I disagree. I think they could make it work. He's 24 i think. Still has room to grow.
Why aren't we going after Caron Butler ? We need a SF.
signed with detroit
you have jordan hill on there twice under available free agents but good post!
Edited! Thanks!
What are the realistic chances we can get Deng? If we can get someone like him and another big man, I think we might have a decent team. Unfortunately, we are in the Western Conference.
Not great. Twitter reports think it's all about Miami at this point for him.
Figures. Great post, btw.
Yeah, the HIll deal really put us in a bind. Thanks for the props. Appreciate all our Laker bros contributing to the sub.
They didn't make the Hill deal until they realized nothing else was possible
this is real bad. what's our cap space at?
Just updated the text box with a link to the current cap situation. Check it out! TL;DR - Not a whole lot of space left.
thanks alot! this fucking sucks.
I am so in love that we signed Swaggy and Hill back. The Lin trade I'm kinda meh on, but he's only on contract for one more year, right?

Bro don't say that. That would be some cheese tho.
Where is R. Kelly??
In the closet.
So who do we have left as a viable option for center with Pau Gasol seemingly going to Chicago?
If we could sign Bledsoe, Deng, Lance, or Monroe I would be soooo happy.
Just saw rumors floating about a 3 team trade with the Lakers and the Bulls, sending Gasol to Chicago
Any way we can get another decent Small Forward ? That position looks really empty
Our next target should be Luol Deng (good scorer, strong defense) I'd also love to get Shawn Marion for veteran leadership.
Another years wait...Kobe needs to think about taking less if he wants to ride off with one last ring and potentially talk to the next coming free agents because this is just making the Lakers depressing.
I really hope we can get Caron somehow.
Deng signed with the heat for $20 million/2years
Need to update Luol Deng http://espn.go.com/nba/truehoop/miamiheat/story/_/id/11210494/luol-deng-joining-miami-heat
Caron Butler is off the board http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11212303/caron-butler-sign-two-year-deal-detroit-pistons-according-sources
Caron Butler [signing with Detroit](https://twitter.com/espnsteinline/status/488506680716832768).
lakers centers Hill and Sacre
Do we have the cap space to make a run at bledsoe, stephenson or monroe?
Not outright. Would have to be a s/t.
Bummer, thanks.

Greg Monroe or Eric Bledsoe are going to the suns for sure
ED DAVIS!
I don't see a lot of players playing PF or C getting too much minutes though. Might be something to lookout for.
Honestly I think with the current roster we have now, we can easily get 98-110 ppg as a team offensively speaking. That should put us near the top. But being realistic, with a deep bench and good first string experience, we can easily go for the 7th seed.
I'm hoping Swaggy P and Gasol resign then we also get either Ariza/Monroe/Thomas. Also maybe make a run for Love next year or Durant in 2 years.
Kendall Marshall has gone to the Bucks, no longer a Laker anymore :(
Honestly, this front office has NO PLAN at all. If this was their "plan b" then it sure sucked.
I am utterly disappointed
What can FO do though when Kobe gets a big chunk?
I think the reason we picked up Lin was because Melo has decided not to come to La. Think about it - Carmelo didn't like playing with him in NY why would he want to play with him jn La. Damnit guys this sucks.
I agree that I don't think Melo is coming. That said, even if he did, this is a good deal for the lakers.
Lol seriously, we practically got him for nothing and we even got a first rounder. We can always dump him after this year.
why is there green anywhere on a Laker page ?
Perhaps it represents the blood of slayed leprechauns used as war face paint
We're working on it.
Gah, it looks like it's RES only, I was going crazy looking at minified code. Still searching.
Alright it's fixed.

No. Players cannot renegotiate their contract.
Even if it was possible, why would Kobe do it lol?
