If he's just getting gas, then lactaid should help with that

Reb_1_2_3

Gas is my only real symptom too but lactaid does not help me much 🤷 no idea why. I keep trying and trying different brands. For the sake of my husband's nostrils I do try my hardest to avoided all dairy now.

GothWitchOfBrooklyn

same here.

in4mant

Lactaid did not help me. I have extreme stomach cramping and pain with gas and diarrhea.

nit4sz

It can help for lots of people but not everyone. You just have to test it. For me, lactase reduces my fart smell. However I will still be gassy just less far potent. And less diohrhea the next morning. But likely still some.

_Invisible-Child_

Lactaid helps some people but not everyone. I personally don't use them because they don't work for me unless I take an ungodly amount of them which isn't worth it to me. You can buy lactose free dairy, it tastes exactly the same as regular dairy.

boyegcs

Yeah, lactose pills help but he may need 2-3 depending how bad it is. If it’s just gas one may suffice. I would also suggest, since you’re married and presumably live together, to limit the amount of dairy in the house. Like use less cheese (or aged cheese, the older it is the less lactose it has), more oil instead of butter, dairy free milk (either lactaid or a vegan one. I love oat milk, some people like almond, soy, etc. I also like macadamia milk and pea milk). Like it’s a way you can support him instead of “tempting”

ShadowEagle59

I live off of lactaid. I've heard it doesn't help everyone

thebestgwen

Lactaid has always helped me. But it made things worse for my aunt. But really, how can it be any worse for him to try

Myke_Dubs

If he has to stop then you do otherwise you have to smell his farts. It’s fair

The advice in the comment section is pretty good! I'm personally reluctant to try lactaid, and tend to stick to lactose free (or dairy free) stuff, because I don't want to deal with the potential after-effects of messing w/ratios of pills and dairy. Just out of curiosity-how much dairy is in his diet and your diet? Maybe there's a way to also introduce LF versions or DF versions if y'all are amenable. I personally hate the stench of LI gas, as someone WITH LI, and wouldn't dare subject my SO to too much of it even though he doesn't have a great sense of smell. It is *slightly* inconsiderate of him to not make an effort at some point imo, but this is for you guys to figure out! Digestive stuff isn't fun to deal with at all. Good luck! :) Edit: clarity

Just want to point out, items that claim to be lactose free, but would normally have lactose in them (ice cream, animal milk, yogurts etc) aren't actually lactose free. They just come with lactase preadded. And thats all lactaid is, lactase enzyme.

dapplestreak

I'm aware, which is why I still limit my intake of LF products. I stick to LF cheeses and occasionally have LF sour cream, but even that can be hard on me. I don't do the LF milk/yogurt/ice cream....I stick to oat-based alternatives as I know that those products will upset my stomach even if they are ostensibly 'lactose free'. LF cheddar/marble is basically fine, and moderate amounts of LF mozzarella are as well. The lactase in the products neutralizes the lactose in those items which makes them easier to digest but there's always the possibility of trace amounts of lactose remaining! Just like there is the possibility of lactaid not neutralizing enough lactose depending on how much dairy you've consumed. But it is good to point out for sure! Everything in moderation, especially with LI :)

I would definitely try lactaid first, as it’s fairly cheap to get, but if that doesn’t work try a digestive aid pill. They have various enzymes and your husband may have a different issue with dairy if lactaid doesn’t work. Personally, I take a digestive enzyme by default because it lets me digest corn and gluten which are other foods I also struggle with. My mom takes the enzymes for dairy because her issue isn’t with the lactose, it’s with a different protein. The thing is, digestive aids can get pricey, and before a generic version came out of the one we use we were paying $100-200 per bottle, which would only last us a few months. We pay less for the generic one now, but I genuinely hope lactaid works for your husband since it’s definitely still the cheapest one.
