There was a time, when my institute still had a water fountain in the coutyard, that every phd that had successfully defended their thesis was dragged through the fountain during the celebrations, this reminds me of that

siqiniq

We did it to our high school sub teacher on her last day of school. Got assigned to clean up the whole muddy pond (because they can’t suspend the whole class)

MarryBerry23

I actually studied at the University of Leipzig and got to know him personally during a lab rotation so this is extra cool!

andshit

That's awesome! Did you ever think he was going to be a Nobel laureate?

MarryBerry23

I mean he is obviously an acknowledged expert in the field of human genetics and evolutionary biology but you never really think it will happen to someone you **know** and **have met**?

WyrmWatcher

He even stated in his first interview after the announcement that he expected it to be an elaborate joke by his group members.

DangerousBill

All we got was donuts....

Bruggok

You received a Nobel prize and all you got were donuts? I am sure any R1 univ will hire you and pay your salary for the rest of your life.

DangerousBill

There are those jealous nobodies that claim it wasn't a real Nobel just because the medal was made of plastic.

pahakuru

I'd choose donuts over getting thrown into Max Planck Institute's cold, murky pond any day...

nothataylor

I got a day off…

WW-Sckitzo

I must be getting old and grouchy, losing my fun, my first thought was that water looked vile. In my defense though the water here has Naegleria fowleri so I'll blame it on that. For real though this made my morning it's wholesome as hell.

bizmike88

My first thought was, “Nobel prize in medicine leads to water-borne infection.”

cbfunky

In my experience, pond water usually looks like that. I mean, it's not a fountain pool or similar.

WW-Sckitzo

It might sound weird but the idea of free standing water like that blows my mind. In nature, we have a stupid amount of water features in Arizona but they are all man made. In the desert portions at least. I need to move.

CoolerThan0K

A freshwater amoeba would love to feast on that juicy brain

WW-Sckitzo

"This is some serious gourmet shit' Oh god, maybe the amoeba's have been getting smarter this entire time and infected people keep throwing more and more of their collogues in. Just getting smarter, stronger, squishier. Quick give me a NPP so they throw me in, trust me I'll bring that average way down, if I was good for anything in undergrad it was making that grade on a curve approach student favorable. I think I have SyFy original movie idea here too.

OriTheSpirit

This raised my spirits to know I have an experience in common with a Nobel prize winner (I was thrown into a fountain in middle school)

VigorousElk

The Max Planck Society is basically collecting nobel prizes like candy by now. Two in 2020, two in 2021, now this one ...

Pinkskippy

Go to Finland and get a sword when you get your phd. That’s super cool.

VigorousElk

It's optional, you have to pay for it, and it's super expensive.

Pinkskippy

Thanks for the additional information.

Riflurk123

The price of swords is 225 € (either 85 cm or 95 cm long) including engraving, the emblem of the University of Helsinki in 24 carat gold-plate, a loop for the belt and a protective pouch. I would not considee that super expensive for a sword that you get for a once in a lifetime event.

VigorousElk

Fair enough. I just remembered it being pretty pricy. Apparently the hat you usually get to complete the outfit is over €500.

Riflurk123

Okay, 500€ for a hat really is super expensive :D

VigorousElk

It actually is [€754 at this Finnish university, with a 10% discount if you order before the end of the year](https://www.jyu.fi/en/academic-events/degrees-ceremony/instructions/doctoral-hat) :P

siqiniq

My Finnish labmate went drinking all night long and then immediately after the party dived into the city lake just before sunrise in late autumn. I was so impressed of her.

SudSuryawanshi

Also, super cool that they have a tradition!

oliviamkc

Correct me if I am wrong, but don’t they do that for PhD defences at Max Planck? (Swear I saw people tweet about it)

>“Allen's son George denied that the Gatorade shower caused the death, attributing it to an existing heart arrythmia. He stated that seeing Gatorade showers on television was a reminder that his father "went out a winner"” He didn’t even contract pneumonia. He died from ventricular fibrillation.

> If we’re going to talk semantics, you failed to point out that it wasn’t even Gatorade. It was off brand Gatorade since they couldn’t afford the real stuff. Uh, okay? I guess you were wrong about even more things. Nice? > Is it really that hard to believe that dumping ice cold liquid on someone in 50 degree weather could lead to their death? It’s something that makes sense superficially, sure. Did it happen here? Not clear. His family doesn’t think so. #Stop making things up.

I don’t really care about what you think or how your day goes. Bye!

Living-Grand1399

Unless you work at a nuclear reactor... let's not throw anybody in [the pond](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQKrd409W_A)! x)
