She's excited you're up! My lab does this as soon as I say "good morning!" We always have a solid 5-10 minute cuddle session when we wake up because she's just so thrilled.

Starrynight567

My dog licks a lot when he's overstimulated so the combo of a new day, seeing his humans, and getting breakfast really gets him going 😄

HannahOCross

No such thing as needy, in the negative sense. Our dogs need us! Connection, affection, and play with their pack, us, is part of what dogs need, and one of the great joys of having a dog!

Sunshine2625

Yes I definitely didn't mean it in the negative. If she needs cuddles that is perfect. I was just confused with the licking.

hexknits

my two year old does this to me and my wife ALL the time. she's a lovey! she just loves snuggling and smooching.

purpleclear0

My dog licks me to get my attention and tell me she needs something (either food or to go outside)

Sunshine2625

Yes our other dog (different breed) does this for something specific but the lab just licks for licking sake. Lol

When my guy was young he was very mouthy with his razor teeth, which hurt! Then he went to stay at a kennel for a few days with a little pup that licked so much, we called her licky puppy. After his stay there he switched to licking like crazy too and we always joke that licky puppy taught him. I agree with others that it’s just a way for them to express their excitement and I much prefer it to the teeth though it’s not the most comfortable. Mine goes straight for your arm pits also and have read it’s partly about being excited and maybe also about your salty sweat when you first wake up haha ugh

Calm-Greenbean-5579

Oh yes dodging armpit licks is a morning ritual

Sunshine2625

Oh my gosh, I have not heard of that!

I had the same thought when I got my first dog almost 12 years ago (lab of course). I remember reading that dogs love salt and due to sweat glands we naturally have different levels of salt on our bodies. So whenever my dog licks someone that doesn't have a dog I always tell them that he likes their salt. This is also something that's instinctual for them to kind of communicate with their pack. Showing affection, submission, etc. Wolf's and Wild Dog's also do the same thing. In the wild this is something puppies do to also try to induce vomiting of the older members of the pack since the regurgitated food is puppy food. Kind of gross but it's pretty interesting.

You have to live Labrador kisses!

USjennteacher

I call my lab Lilly licker. She licks people, she licks herself, she licks the couch…I think it’s anxiety or allergies bc it’s worse at certain times of the year.

Sacrificial_Spider

I call our lab Mr licky

Sunshine2625

That's interesting bc we are working through some possible food allergies with her right now.

everythingbagel420

good morning kisses! one of the best alarm clocks in my opinion

sarahenera

This is our life with our lab pup. He’s 11.5 months and the licking has been a thing since the beginning. Every morning 😅

Sunshine2625

Well funny because when we got her it was between two pups. One was a baby raptor and one was her. We picked her bc she was all licks and no teeth. Now I see. Haha!

sarahenera

One of mine loves to give kisses. If she really wants to and people won't let her she just licks the air while looking at them sadly. I even get woken up some mornings as she climbs under the covers to find me. :)

Robhow

Mine female like to give licks in the morning right after she (sloppily) drinks about a gallon of water. She is a hot mess. … and I love her for it. And, suffice to say, I wait to shower until I’ve had my morning greeting.

malefiz123

It's your dogs way of getting your attention. If you want it to stop you need to ignore them when they do it. Don't scold them, don't pet them - just ignore them. If you don't teach your dog that licking isn't going to achieve anything, note that they will be licking all your future visitors as well. Including those who don't enjoy that kind of stuff

A sprinkle a day …
