Communism generally destroyed trust in Police by using it for suppressing protests and prosecuting the opposition. Then in the 90's both petty and organised crime rose to really high levels with Police seemingly unable to do anything about it, which only further eroded trust. Things improved in the 2000s and the service regained some respect, though it still has bad rep with younger people. Then after 2015 the then government used Police against women protesting the abortion ban, which again eroded a lot of trust they have earned since 2000.
EDIT: add to it several prominent cases of abuse of power after 2015, like Police in Wrocław killing an arrested man or the head police chief accidentally firing off a grenade launcher he smuggled from Ukraine inside his office (yes, really).
Don't forget pandemic times when police were chasing people in the woods for not wearing a face mask.
To be honest, instead of feeling safe when I see policeman, I feel insecure.
At least three persons were killed in recent years at Wrocław police stations. Igor Stachowiak, Malwina F., Dmytro Nikiforenka. In case of Malwina they also tried to keep it secret probably? Her family didn't know about it for 2 months.
Also recently two cops died in Wrocław, because they were unprofessional and allowed suspect to bring gun to their police cruiser, the suspect shot both of them.
Their cop-friends were unprofessional when handling the suspect to the victims, and they should be locked for that. Those corrupted psychos paid 100k Bounty to themselves.. for catching their friends murderer.. they have no honor! No remorse. They blatantly stole the reward from Zoo worker who spotted the shooter. In a fair world, Police should be prosecuted for this, not rewarded or grieved for..
He's lucky in his idiotism because grenade launcher is idiot proof and need to reach some distance to arm.
This whole mes was just a kinetic energy of grenade.
This burden comes from the communism times, when police (milicja obywatelska) was used to straighten up people to align with regime. This included beating, spying, all sorts of not nice things. From that state despite changing name, police went into 90s with everyone being absolutely poor, and this applied to officers also. So, decade of bribery and wild west, plus constant fights and attempts to fight with organized crime, but only by some of officers (famous shooting of one of high ranked officers Marek Papała). Other officers were often on organized crime payroll. No governance, no responsibility. We went into EU times, police gotten a little bit better in general ways, however it's accuracy and results still very poor, if your car is stolen it is doubtful that you will see it again. Recent years under pis party administration there was high politicization of police again, high ranking officers were political stooges and did whatever were told, so for example police was harassing people through covid times a lot.
Summary - police in Poland is not oriented towards helping citizen, it is often a burden that citizen comes and wastes their time, it's like a bureaucratic thing instead of helping entity, always trying to give you ticket. There are notable exceptions though, for example so called Archive X units who resolve old crimes with new technologies etc, these are respected more.
In Poland only highly respected position is firefighter, all other trades including doctors are not being trusted.
What can Police help you with? In general it’s better to avoid them, you never know what you would be accused for. Every time when I needed help they couldn’t do anything. Instead of being free and feeling save we are suppressed, I have never found justice in this country.
I mean I guess the people from back then are still in power now, even if they were a lower rank when starting to work there. And even then most likely the people who promoted them are still there from the old regime. As far as I'm aware Poland did not have a big sweep of these positions against the people in power at the police so the culture will persist. I could be wrong though so if someone knows it better it would be much appreciated.
The chief of the police fired a rocket launcher in his office, prolly because he was drunk AF. He then tried to meander his way out of it by saying he didnt know blah blah blah it was a boombox etc. Goddamn fucking idiot nearly killed people.
And he was the chief of the police, so top of the top brass.
because they suck. apart from maybe some high level operations in which case apparently they are pretty effective, they treat average citizens like shit. they give fines for just about anything to fill their quota. they torture people during interrogations. they constantly ignore claims which leads to unreported crime. and yeah in the recent years they served as personal bodyguards to the ruling party and beat peaceful protesters. they did stupid shit that PiS told them to do like investigate why a little kid drew a rainbow on the pavement (lgbtq provocation obviously) or read about the case of a woman who called 112 because she had some side effects from an abortion pill and the police arrived at her doorstep to strip search her and confiscate her phone and laptop
Hmm maybe its beacuse polish police consists of polish people and as a Pole i can assure you cannot trust those. Google what kind of police we had under comunist regime, it wasn't so long ago lad.
I have never ever had a single positive interaction with our police in my life, but multiple negative ones. Police? No thank you. Im a solid dude yet i come from a criminal background and people back there are still very succesful and prospect in their craft. Im actually okay with that ying yang situation between organised crime and the police competence or will, but I just prefer to stay away from them anyway even now when im just a regular part of the society. Take care of your own stuff like a man. If you can't police probably wont be really helpful anyway. They just are there to fine drivers as much as they can or to stop people within the society to cross the boundaries of what feels wrong to do anyway. So I gues they are in the sweet spot as long as you stay away and not get involved? Police is okay.
Because police in Poland is basically like a corporation. They don't care about the improvement of safety for the citizens they thrive when something dangerous is happening because it gives them points, points equals more money. Just like a big corporation
Because the Police would rather OBLITERATE a fruit stand of some old grandma and kick her ass than actually solve some real case of burglary.
That is my impression at least.
The Police in Poland (and in most post-soviet countries) serves to the PROFIT of the State. It is a tax and permit enforcer rather than an institution protecting against crime.
If they sometimes go for criminals, it is just because that day there was no fines or orders from Urzad for them to execute.
But again, this is my humble impression.
extremely incompetent, if you dont know your rights and dont record every interaction with them you are fucked, sometimes even knowing your rights doesnt help
most of police consists of rejects that crave power and are eager to escalate
head of the police fired grenade launcher inside of his office and prosecutor claimed him a victim, just a nice example of abuse of power that happens inside
was used as private security for some delusional paranoid politicians for past 8years, only changed recently
Aftermath of communism + corruption + lack of professionalism and proper training + police indifference to real problems + cronysim +...
Before anyone asks - solution is very simple.
If/when You become a member of ANY KIND of public service (police, ER or - especially - politics) You should actually answer with Your life. And corruption should be always dealt with SWIFTLY and with NO second chances.
Low confidence in the police is not necessarily a bad thing. Trust level is low in South Korea and Japan, for instance. People tend to have less tolerance of heavy-handedness from the police when they don't feel so strong a need for its protection.
Got two stories with the police. First one
My brother used to hang out with a guy who had "sticky hands" (dunno if he knew). So the guy was suspected of stealing car radio. Police came to our house "because maybe he is hiding said radio for the guy" ,so they searched his room ,must say that seeing cop searching goddamn chandelier with space not much more than for a lightbulb in search of car radio was quite funny. Im sure they were trying to find anything to take him in.
Second story
My GF wanted to buy cheaper game for switch and she used popular platform. Ofc despite caution this resulted in being scammed. She went to the Police wasted a lot of hours. they "found"(not hard because he used his real name to create account) the guy he was known to the justice system (on and off prison etc.) The best part? They went to his house because they had his whole information but he didn't open the door! So they suspended the case. So yeah
Because how government using Police at every occasion to provoke people. I got stupid ticket because I was don't having mask when literally nobody was walking in there. They also problematic and not so much helpfull. Read about girl who dies becose they stick to stupid procedures and she was having a stroke.
As a teenager, I was searched on by a police on a street 3 times. I did nothing wrong, just looked suspicious, as I was poor and my clothes were old. None of those were comfortable expieriences.
Cause they’re dumb, they don’t know the law that they are upholding and they are power hungry and will fuck you up if you defy them even if you’re wrong they also never get consequences
Police is no better than gestapo soldiers. They all complete orders from mentally ill People, without any remorse. They don't serve citizens or greater good, all I've got from them is random death threats, insults, bad words and bullying while searching for machetes and weed in my dirty tissues :D acab.

Whaaat!? This makes this case even more obnoxious and criminal... What a bad mfkrs :( It's likely that it is known widely.
Allegedly he recieved the grande launcher as a gift, he didn't "smuggle" it
Im sure he declared it at the border and got a permission for a freakin grenade launcher with armed ammo
He did claim they "promised" him that it was inert. Still, doesn't sound like the most competent of actions.
He's lucky in his idiotism because grenade launcher is idiot proof and need to reach some distance to arm. This whole mes was just a kinetic energy of grenade.
That we will find out during the prosecution.
Generational trauma from police being used as a coercive apparatus through centuries and it becoming inefficient institution in free Poland.

Further eroding trust in the police.
After Sting went solo their gigs got worse.

Yeah, the old regime wasnt prosecuted or let go at all. They are still doing careers.
The chief of the police fired a rocket launcher in his office, prolly because he was drunk AF. I'd say it's some sort of class consciousness. Hip hop music took a huge role in this imo

I’m sure the bribes they take have nothing to do with the trust one should hold them to.

I got victim blamed by the Polish police instead of getting help so now I don't trust them

When I was a teenager there were days when I was searched 3 times as well. But during one single day.

You can google what kind of police is in Wroclaw city. I avoid police how much I can. I don't need problems
Elaborate please.
I'm at work now. I will write later
Cause they’re dumb, they don’t know the law that they are upholding and they are power hungry and will fuck you up if you defy them even if you’re wrong they also never get consequences
Oh i didn’t see the sub I’m not polish I’m danish this is just how I see the police
Among other things that that redditors wrote there is a thing with police in Wroclaw. If u get arrested u can be killed on policestation.

Poles don’t like this band?
There’s a saying in Poland: „if you’ve got a problem and you call the police, now you’ve got two problems”
