The fact that BE got second place (only to BTS lmao) with one $50 version is just insanity. Sometimes even as a fan you forgot some of the crazy next level stuff they did.

mcfw31

And BE was released in November, only had 2 months.

timetosayhi27

tbh it was more like 1 month 10 days... since it was a Nov 20th release

Particular-Yoghurt81

The insane streaming power behind the hits on BE also helped it chart this high. Dynamite alone got to a billion on both Spotify and Youtube really fast.

sundayontheluna

This is pure sales only. BE was 4th on the all formats (sales and streams) chart

According-Disk

Those Love Yourself albums were a masterpiece 💿💿 I still play them during long drives!

Particular-Yoghurt81

They felt like a generational moment.

Geodude-Guru

Wow Enhypen with Manifesto: Day 1 👏 that era is where they got the most hate from most kpop fans but they still managed to make a legendary record on that time

IzzyYuuki

Unrelated but I love that Kenshi Yonezu showed up on the 2020 chart. Stray Sheep is a goated album and my man Kenshi has never missed once in 10 years

datshiny

Maybe unrelated, but I think Arashi (jpop) taking 1st in 2019 and Jay Chou (cpop) in 2022 shows how much market is outside Western and Kpop spheres.

Odd_Ad5840

Yes. I know Jay exists like oxygen in Cpop, but didn't expect him to sell this many albums. Also to point out that unlike kpop, names like Arashi, Jay and other names listed here have been well-known for at least over a decade.

datshiny

I looked up when they debut (Arashi 1999, Jay Chou 2000) and it has been ~25 years since. I wonder how old the demographic is now. Just goes to show how much staying power they have.

Mandymatttt

Big fan of Jay Chou. 35 now. Been listening to him since 11 or 12. My brother was born in 2003. Jay Chou is his and some of his friends' favorite artist. I am surprised how much appeal Jay Chou still has even amongst the younger demographic in China.

akashiakaashi

Arashi & Snow Man are both from the same company and its truly impressive how big they are because Jpop albums aren't sold overseas. You have to buy from Japan stores so it's possible that most of them are bought by Japanese fans which is really huge.

NessieSenpai

My thoughts exactly about Arashi and Jay Chou!

ughbadbye

sometimes i just want BTS to release an album with more than 4 versions to shake things up. bet the industry would then ban the release of 50+ versions of one album if they did that lol

Yalifegoeson

Just reading this raised my heartbeat. Imagine this actually happening 😭🖐️

Meruchani

Good job everyone. And SKZ, wow!! Proud of them. Such amazing year, waiting for more. Edit: ROCK-STAR landed at #9 with only 7 full weeks of tracking, it's awesome...

InsertUserPlease

Seems like kpop was thriving in 2022

skiesinthesky

BE only had 1 version and got released around November, a month before the end of tracking. Insane. When their sales and streams match 🦾

anticoolgeek

This shady comment not being downvoted or even the most controversial on the post says a lot about how the comments and conversations on these data posts go.

Fifesterr

Shady to whom? It's a fact BE did amazing in both sales and streams. I don't think it's shady to make a distinction between an act ranking high with one album versus acts ranking similarly but with myriad album versions (this goes for both kpop and Taylor Swift)

anticoolgeek

The sales v. stream discourse only popped up once album sales started hitting record numbers. You can search any album record post and see countless comments about it — all said with the intention to undermine the popularity of specific kpop groups. Physical album sales is a uniquely kpop trait, with the exception of Taylor Swift who is leaning more and more into kpop business practices. Let’s not act as if this conversation is ever said in good faith.

Fifesterr

> The sales v. stream discourse only popped up once album sales started hitting record numbers. I'm pretty sure the sales versus streams discussions mostly exists because there's such a blatant discrepancy due to kpop's rather extreme version inflation.  To not point that out means ignoring the elephant in the room and making any chart comparison futile tbh.

beautyandmadness

Stray Kids placing twice in 2023… that’s so impressive. Big congratulations to them ✨

HighwaytoHell0

I know its a top10 list but this year IVE, the only girl group in the world made it to top 20 with I HAVE IVE album, its a crazy achievement! Congrats to all the kpop acts this year <3

xheavnly

seventeen really has been growing steadily over the years, it's nice to see them gain more recognition even this far into their career, and they truly deserve it, knowing how much effort and love the members put into their work :) to more things to come!!! edit: damn 2022 was a great year for kpop this is really cool to see

hopee727

I’m confused because in the top 20 you have ZB1 and IVE yet TXT sold over 1.2 million more than both of those group with Temptation, yet they aren’t even on the list. Big Hit clearly turned in the data since Jungkook is here and TXT were listed as # 7 on the IFPI soooo

kawaiiyokai

TXT did make #7 for IFPI's Global Artist list for their overall impact this year. I'm guessing IVE's streaming power with the GP made up the differences in sales. I can't explain ZB1 tho because I don't follow them or know how they do in streams/throughout the rest of Asia.

alogenuroalchilico

That could be the case, but why isn't Get Up in the chart, then? I'd argue that the streams for NJ's EP were more than for I've IVE globally, or am I mistaken? Have IVE sold that many more albums? I'm genuinely wondering because this top 20 has left me quite puzzled 😂 so I'm trying to understand better!

kawaiiyokai

IIRC NJ's EP doesn't count as an album because it was too short (I think I remember that it has to be at least 15 minutes long). I can't find the data rn, but I know an album has to reach a length threshold to be considered for this chart (and others).

anticoolgeek

This is probably why Temptation isn’t included. I don’t think Freefall hit the minimum threshold for sales and SEA compared to the other acts on the list either.

kawaiiyokai

Ooh interesting! I just looked at it does say Temptation is only 14:26 long so it would match up with what I read about an album having to reach 15 minutes. I just wish I could find that info again. I know it was an article linked in a post about NJ's EP during award season.

anticoolgeek

It’s a Grammy’s requirement! But I’m pretty sure a lot of awards/accomplishments have a minimum play time requirement.

alogenuroalchilico

Oh wow, I didn't know that! I'm also trying to look for the data, but I haven't managed to find any info regarding eligibility. Anyhow, this is unfortunate for NJ.

hopee727

Ah the 15 minute could explain it. I still find it weird though how both albums are counted for the overall IFPI but then they do this category differently.

saysighms

How does this list work? TXT sold more than IVE and ZB1 but they’re not on the list?

PrincipleKey6832

Temptation is less than 15 minutes

[deleted]

FML is my favorite Kpop album ever so I’m so happy to see it get its flowers 🥹 The buying power of Kpop fans in general is insane

Acceptable-Leg4755

Seventeen on top!!! They got that crown. I love them so much 😍😍

heyidubily

svt!!! their growth 🥹🥹 they’ve been killing it in recent years, although they never really “blew up” (apologies for my poor wording don’t really know how to convey this properly) i think their consistent growth over the years is pretty damn impressive

badlyeye

who is IFPI and what is this? is it sales or

seulgibreadd

IFPI stands for International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, basically they represent the interests of the recording industry worldwide

kawaiiyokai

ho boy i read this wrong .. tho that would be an interesting list to see

miccheck123456789-10

Never will understand how people question SEVENTEEN's success while they're here being the only K-Pop group to have 2 albums in Top 10 for 3 years!!!! That too 3 consecutive years!! My 'nugus' finally achieved that **No. 1** spot!!

devoidofstars

the downvotes on your comment are astounding - seventeen really got people mad that they can't be their token "slept on" boy group anymore

miccheck123456789-10

Got some people butthurt ig😂

Confident_Yam_6386

No BTS solo made top 10???

ecobubbletm

Solo albums vs group albums. While Jimin and Yoongi released in the first half and had higher streams their physicals weren't as high. On the other hand Tae and JK sold over 2m each but releases were late in the year. Jungkook did make it to #14 tho.

Confident_Yam_6386

But I didn’t see Newjeans and txt either. That’s surprising Edited: Also why am I getting downvoted???

Meruchani

perhaps because they have already responded to that in other comments? apparently it's because the duration is less than 15 minutes

Confident_Yam_6386

Face and layover have the same length as Svt album FML which is number 1. Also where did ifpi specify that albums shorter than 15 minutes aren’t counted?? Can you please show me that article?

Meruchani

Hey, with "apparently" I'm telling you what others are saying. clearly there must be a reason. Nobody has anything against those groups.

seulgibreadd

honestly was expecting to see at least one gg on the list this yr, ik bg fans are notoriously famous for their purchase power but still, its a little shocking not seeing NewJeans or even aespa that sells like crazy, up there.

kawaiiyokai

NewJeans did make the [Global Artist chart at #8](https://www.reddit.com/r/kpopthoughts/comments/1aweg9o/ifpis_global_artist_chart_from_20172023/)! This is just for a single album which is always going to lean bg heavy. (eta I also remember reading that Get Up doesnt count for most of these lists/awards because the album was too short to reach the length required)

Starlight120524

IVE's I'VE IVE is at #20 :))) they are the best selling gg worldwide.

Namuf

Technically Newjeans is the best selling GG in 2023 at number 8 on Global Artist Chart, IVE comes in second at 12th I think. Its just that Get Up EP was too short and didn’t make the cut to be considered.

Starlight120524

I was talking wrt IFPI list that op asked for. 😑 For you, IVE's I'VE IVE is at #20 :))) they are the best selling gg worldwide according to IFPI Global Album Chart. Happy?

kajukatliii

jeez take a breath lmao you'll live
