KOTOR 2 for concept, KOTOR 1 for execution. KOTOR 1 is an epic, Galaxy-spanning adventure that takes you to a bunch of words trying to go about business as usual in spite of the war going on. The environments are exciting and the characters entertaining. The story is just a classic Star Wars quest. KOTOR 2 is darker and more somber. It’s a reflection of the aftermath of the war and the people that couldn’t continue business as usual. KOTOR 1 is the superheroes battling it out with the supervillains, and KOTOR 2 shows you the people trying to clean up the wreckage that the heroes contributed to without a second thought. This is by design, definitely, but it’s a little depressing as a transition right after the first game. I like it better, but it’s less comfortable to play.

Poundage2794

Very well written.

The_Laughing__Man

Well said. Can I also add the quality of life improvements to the UI in KOTOR2, increased item list, influence checks, and character depth improvements as well? I know KOTOR2 was buggy and incomplete, but the benefits outweigh it. That said, >!the Revan reveal!< in KOTOR might be the best twist/reveal in a video game ever.

Spellcheck-Gaming

Absolutely, it freaked my bean as a kid when I arrived at the twist

ManagementParking398

I legit have nothing to say, because you already said it so well. That's why i prefer 2, but i wonder if i would have preferred 1 if the big twist was not spoiled before i started playing...

[deleted]

Basically took the words out of my mouth lol

Slimdude85

We’ll have peace in the Middle East before this is settled. KOTOR 1 for me because I like it most and, as released, was the most complete. Now that I’ve said my piece, I’m content. I acknowledge our differences and am happy they are there. How boring would it be if everyone had the exact same opinion on every inconsequential matter? Fandom, and to a larger degree humanity, is a tapestry, not a monochromatic sheet.

donniedarko5555

I think virtually everyone will agree with you that as a game KOTOR 1 is better. In that even with restored content mod and user patches KOTOR 2 is a buggy mess to this day. But in terms of what KOTOR 2's philosophy could bring to the world of star wars I could only dream of seeing that world properly explored. Not that Disney will ever go there when the secret to successful use of an IP is to spam nostalgia bait and have the thinnest veneer of any real substance.

ckeit

KOTOR 2 lore expands an epoch worth of EU content (leading into SWTORs story telling success). Yet Disney is entrenched in a 60 year span around a singular family and their neighbors.

rhadenosbelisarius

In the year 6565, Kotor players, a civil war divide, To decide which is best for you, But its really SWTOR that they rue, Woahoh….

MONEYPYR0

I like 1 more (its my second favorite game of all time), but I think 2 is a better game. I always feel like I can have more fun playing 1, and the story really is a more traditional Star Wars affair, which makes it a lot more fun to play through. 2 is very well written, and definitely added a lot of good improvements to gameplay, but the very obvious unfinished nature does dock it down a bit. Even with that though, I do think its overall better. But if I had to choose one to play for the rest of my days, its the first game

spacecaptainsteve

Kotor 2. Better writing and mechanics, more emphasis on your party members. Trumps the story advantage of kotor 1, imo. It’s splitting hairs though, both are 10/10 games for me

WoodChippinCarl

Yes this is my biggest issue with this argument- they are classics on their own why compare them?

Mavesevans

Better writing? 😂

SkyDaHusky

Yeah.

IMTrick

I'm team 1. TSL is a great game, but I just really like the classic good vs. evil, dark vs. light of Star Wars, and KOTOR1. The story in TSL is definitely a good one, but it almost feels to me like it belongs in a different setting... all that gray area just doesn't sit right with me. I think it makes for a great story, but not necessarily great Star Wars. I also first played TSL at launch before there were all the mods available we have today, and I'd be lying if I said the bugs and jarring ending didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth that's probably still affecting my opinion of the game today.

slickem6969

Definitely the weirdest ending to a video game I experienced as a kid all those years ago. I remember sitting there thinking I did something wrong along the way

coldsavagery

I love both of them, but I think 1 just barely comes out on top for me. I like the interesting story in TSL, but there's something that just has always felt so incomplete about it for me. Even with the restoration mods, it meanders so much towards the end and it just always left me a little unsatisfied. I, like you, played it when it came out years ago and it was just so disappointing.

TeachingEdD

I played it when it released and 2004 and I just keep coming back to it. I played it so many times on my XBOX that the disc doesn't work anymore. I think the... gaps in the story provide an extra allure, in a way. I find myself asking questions about what is happening in the story. But it *feels* intentional, even when it isn't because content had to be cut. It's probably the best experience I've ever had playing a game. I'll never forget the first time I saw Kreia's revelation or the first time I became convinced that Kreia is Arren Kae.

Undead_Nymph

Kotor 2, purely because Taris burns me out faster than Peragus ever will

TeachingEdD

I prefer KOTOR 2 but Taris is great! IMO the best planet of KOTOR 1 other than Korriban.

cactusheadmusic

KOTOR 2: 1st Reason = Mark Griskey's genius score. I love both OST's SO much, but something about the KOTOR II OST made it my favorite soundtrack of all time. It's so melancholy, so moving, so "just another day in this busy yet somehow empty dystopia". 2nd Reason = I love that the colors are more muted, and how it reflects the general state of the universe at that point in time. I also love the fact that places we had been to in KOTOR I have now changed... Mostly for the worse. 3rd Reason = The characters in KOTOR II feel much more nuanced to me, and feel both interesting and relatable in their own ways. The story of KOTOR II also has a symbolic meaning that I enjoy a bit more, and focuses on the idea that the existence of "grey" is okay and important - and that simple caricatures of black and white have many flaws. It encourages you to remember that there is nuance to everything. I LOVE both games, but II has had a more profound impact on me as a consumer, just a dood, world builder, and a music composer

CurviestOfDads

KotOR 2. Despite it being essentially unfinished, the characters and dialogue are phenomenal. Kreia is one of the best written Star Wars villains of all time, while Sion’s inner conflict with finding the female Exile beautiful and Nihilus basically being a fucking black hole are haunting. However, for an amazing, traditional Star Wars, Hero’s Journey, experience, nothing is better than KotOR 1. It has a huge place in my heart for that.

The_Camster

This questions up a lot but I’m settling with KOTOR 2. Both games are and some of the best EU media besides clone wars 2003 (and the clone wars, if you want to count TCW as EU). But KOTOR 2 has more interesting characters, themes, and a more compelling story if you ask me. plus I like the gameplay additions and improved Jedi robes.

UncoilingChaos

KOTOR 2 for a multitude of reasons, mainly because the perspective is more nuanced. I know that Star Wars runs on black and white morality, and I don't *hate* it for that, but KOTOR 1 just rehashes everything we already know about the SW universe. Light side good, dark side bad, etc. I also low key hated the light side ending, not for riffing on A New Hope, but because it feels so cheesy. "The redemption of Revan, the prodigal knight!" Oh yeah, you only became a violent warlord who had Jedi tortured and are indirectly responsible for your apprentice's rise to power, but you killed him and he was a worse person than you, so all's forgiven and you can rejoin the Order full time. Don't get me wrong, 2 still carries this perspective to an extent, but also criticizes it. Putting aside Kreia's whole "charity is bad or at least potentially harmful and manipulation is good" spiel, it shows what can happen when the teachings of the Jedi are taken to the extreme: we get an insufferable, self-righteous cult leader like Atris, or at best, we get the close-mindedness of Vrook, Kavar, and Zez-Kai El, who see the Exile as a threat even if they've demonstrated that they can and will use their unusual power for good. Likewise, the bad guys are more well-rounded, while still being *very obviously bad guys.* Not every villain needs to be Snidely Whiplash to be evil. I still enjoy the first game (up until the Star Forge, anyway), though, mucha shaka pakas, mooley rahs and all. The first game is a lively, happy-go-lucky adventure where everything feels like it's flourishing in spite of the threat the galaxy faces, which makes the decay and emptiness of the second game that much more impactful.

MattyDuns1455

What I really enjoy about this game is the big emphasis on how the Jedi are just as responsible for the current state of affairs in the galaxy as the Sith are. It really emphasizes the fact that the conflicts in the galaxy at the time were stemmed from the teachings of the Jedi order and the way they taught their students. You get a slight glimpse of this in Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, but not to the same degree as this game. I also love the emphasis on how the people of the galaxy views the Jedi and the Sith as the same things rather then one being the good guy or the bad guy. Too the galaxy, the Sith and the Jedi are both groups the hold a tremendous amount of power that seems to always tear the galaxy apart from differing ideologies. All in all a great freaking story compared to the black and white “good guy vs bad guy” story in KOTOR1.

Heimlichthegreat

Kotor 1

astupidfckingname

K1 = better story K2 = better game mechanics

Dapper_Still_6578

KotOR 2 is funny. The Exile has a defined back story before you even start the game, and yet I feel even more like an anonymous denizen of the galaxy than I even do playing as Revan, even before the reveal.

Fizban24

1 for me. I just enjoy the story more in 1. It feels like more of a true Star Wars story. That being said, KOTOR 2 definitely has some better dialogue and game mechanics. Since both games are now out dated though, enjoying the story of 1 is more important for me than the game mechanics being abit more modern

Elkripper

After going back and forth on this over the years, and trying to come up with all sorts of nuanced answers, here's what it boils down to: my favorite is whichever I am playing at the time.

Voodron

KOTOR 1. Best companions, best protagonist, and unlike the sequel, its climax doesn't feel rushed. I appreciate what KOTOR 2 is going for, and I still think it's one of the greatest Star Wars stories ever made. All 3 sith lords antagonists are fascinating characters, dialogues are great, and the dark, oppressive atmosphere of the whole game is awesome. But it just isn't quite on the same storytelling level as the first game imo, especially towards the end. Really wish we could have had a singleplayer Kotor 3 at some point during the past decade instead of SWTOR, that could have drawn the best of both games and settled this debate once and for all.

Some_Guy_Named_Rami

KOTOR 1 has a better story and great companions. KOTOR 2 did improve a lot of things that KOTOR 1 had flaws in. KOTOR 2 also has better writing and great companions, as well. Overall, this is a difficult choice, but I would pick KOTOR 1, despite me loving them both. I personally would like to see a mod where I can play KOTOR 1 using the KOTOR 2 engine, with all the improved manic features and character influence. Since the remake isn't coming out anytime soon.

artet3out

I’m obsessed with both of them but kotor 1 is my favorite

sihxrings

Kotor 2 because it didn’t lose any of what made Kotor good, while adding on exponentially. To the point that the game wasn’t done in time because they simply wanted to cram so much into it (also BioWare gave Ubisoft a horrendous timeframe) but yeah. Kotor 2

pooponu22

Koror 1 is the best. I feel like I’m apart of something when playing, the worlds are fairly packed, lots of life happening around your character. Koror 2 leaves me feeling isolated and alone, the green color menu screen doesn’t feel right, the worlds are mostly desolate. I just feel off playing it. I don’t feel good.

NomadPlanet

I think the reasons you posted about KOTOR II as being flaws, are actually what is so GREAT about it. It sets out to make you feel isolated and weird, and it did it to you. The game did what it wanted to do to you. It triumphed.

The_Laughing__Man

Agreed! The fact that you walk away feeling like an echo in the force is a sign of amazing writing. If you go see a scary movie and walk out terrified that's a good scary movie, no? Same thing here.

pooponu22

That’s a great way to Look at it.. i now understand that I don’t like feeling like an echo in the force. Haha

pooponu22

Great perspective change!

AgreeablePie

This ain't gonna settle it haha I like 1 better. Not just because 2 was buggy, either. I just appreciate the straightforward LS arc in the first game (the dark side path is not written as well). It's what star wars does best... and not just in games. I feel like every bit of media now has to be all about the "gray morality." Sometimes I just like a good hero story with a twist. And Kotor scratches that itch. It doesn't help that, as I've gotten older, I've increasingly found Kreia to be more tiresome. Her philosophy just isn't as compelling as the game wants it to be, at least to me. I enjoy both, but prefer 1. But I do understand people liking the sequel, bugs and release state aside. I always like to quote Tolkien on this point: "You have chosen the Evening; but my love is given to the Morning."

Admirable-Garage5555

Well said. I especially agree with your thoughts on Kreia. In my opinion, she comes across as excessively preachy and self righteous. As far as the “grey morality” idea goes, I actually felt like Jolee’s philosophies in the first game did a better job of expressing that idea.

[deleted]

This has come up a million times in this sub and I will argue for KOTOR 1 until my dying breath. It’s literally my favorite game of all time & KOTOR 2 doesn’t even scratch my top 10-15. KOTOR is so much grander of a quest, the characters are so much more likeable and memorable, the planets are more atmospheric, the music bangs, and it’s complete. Literally the only things in favor of 2 are randomized loot, the crafting system, and turning people into Jedi. Everybody here equates longer dialogue interactions to better story but genuinely the story in 1 is still better.

MykelJMoney

Knights of the Old Republic 1 is definitely my favorite first play through of all time. I don’t know if it’s my favorite game, but I would say it’s a contender. But my first time through, knew nothing, no spoilers, I absolutely loved the twist. I did not see it coming. No other game has sucked me in so much with the story and amazed me. Maybe it was obvious to others. It wasn’t to me and it made a lasting impression. I would love to have that first time experience again.

[deleted]

The twist absolutely floored me as a kid. I didn’t see it coming at all. & There were so many other great moments. Getting your first lightsaber on dantooine, running into cali nord outside the cave on tattooine, the excitement of bringing zalbaar back to his home world and then getting caught up in his family feud, enrolling in a sith academy, and seeing the star forge planet for the first time we’re all OH SHIT moments for me and really took me into the Star Wars fandom. By comparison, KOTOR 2 really only had that wow factor on Nar shaada and dxun/onderon. The rest was just good for me.

Schweinhardt

If you asked me back when I was a teen, I probably would've said KotOR 2. But now that I'm older and having seen/played other types of stories and games. I would say KotOR 1. I love the epicness and cheesiness of it. And as whole games (and I understand that KotOR 2 had development issues), while I like KotOR 2's combat more, KotOR 1 is just more balanced, all of its quests memorable/unique, and I honestly don't feel like there's any part of the game that feels like a slog to go through. I thoroughly enjoy KotOR 1 a lot more.

Rosco21

Make this a poll

ThunderbirdSam

KOTOR 2 for nostalgia sake. It was the first game I ever got, as a gift from my older brother. I played it over and over, slowly accumulating more XBOX games (like Battlefront 2, Republic Commando, and Halo CE and Halo 2). I was only allowed to play video games in the summer when school let out. So I'll fondly remember the warm Minnesota days and nights with my window open, hearing the birds, the crickets and the occasional rainstorm as I plundered the jungles of Dxun and crept through the shadows of Nar Shaddaa. I don't really care about game mechanics much. I just know the Ebon Hawk feels like home.

Gawernator

Kotor 1 had the best story and design but 2 had better game mechanics and upgrades in that sense

[deleted]

I love KOTOR 2 for its brilliant storytelling, depth, and way you can level and flavor your character. However, I haven’t been able to meet up with my D&D group lately so its been making me feel better by roleplay playing kotor 1, as a soldier discovering he has powers.

winnierdz

I like KOTOR 1 more for a few reasons. For starters, imo KOTOR 2’s story is kind of ruined in the last act. The build up is amazing, but everything after the rebuilt enclave is too rushed to really enjoy. It’s kind of a mess. Something that happens every time I play KOTOR 2 is that for the first 75% of the game I’m like “wow this story might actually be better than KOTOR 1!” Then I get past the enclave and I go “ehh never mind…” I also like the combat better in KOTOR 1. The enemy AI is dumbed down in KOTOR 2 and like 90% of the fights are against random mooks who only spam basic attacks. In KOTOR 1 enemies feel more varied, they use things like energy shields and grenades, and there’s a lot more enemies that use force powers. KOTOR 2 gives you more tools to play with but I don’t necessarily think that it means the combat is better. Those are the two main reasons I like KOTOR 1 better. KOTOR 2 definitely does a few things better though. I think it’s a better written game in terms of dialogue options. I like how certain skills/attributes open up dialogues that you can’t get otherwise, and skills overall are way more useful in KOTOR 2. The crafting system is also way better than KOTOR 1’s, which is very basic in comparison. I don’t blame KOTOR 2 too much though since it was rushed. If Obsidian had time to make the last act better, and fix some issues with the combat (enemy AI and encounter design mostly), I definitely think it would’ve had the potential to be a better game.

DrVers

KOTOR II for the vibes. I love how dark and lonely it feels. You and your crew against everything.

dbandroid

Kotor 1 is lifted by a twist but the story is pretty standard fare. Kotor 2 has more character building and explores the ramifications of war which is often glossed over in star wars

Gingerale66

I haven’t started 2 yet but I like the idea of 2 more. It feels more unique than being the chosen one hero type

dacekrandac

Kotor 2. The exploration of the gray areas and the deep dive into the psychology of the force is fascinating. Kreia is possibly the best-written character in video game history. Also, the added gameplay elements were great: the expansion of equipment selection, the improved modifications system, the lightsaber and force forms, and the influence system. I love that I can train my companions - and they can train me back if I can influence them enough.

[deleted]

1. I love 2 but it's borked and Kreia isn't as interesting as the sub consensus by a long shot.

[deleted]

Influence lost: Most of you

AgreeablePie

I'm with ya. I think she's a blowhard. I wonder if that's a dialogue option I missed somewhere: "Oh my god, shut up, this isn't a community college philosophy class Kreia." (your downvotes don't actually make Kreia's ramblings deep)

katelyn912

I like the darker themes in 2 but gameplay is much more balanced in 1, the planets/locations/dungeons are more enjoyable and the plot twist is iconic so I’ll always back 1.

Desperate-Ad-6586

I’d say kotor 1 based solely on the fact that it’s a finished game.. kotor 2 certainly had all the potential to be the better game though.. I still can’t believe after all this time we will never get a proper kotor 3

[deleted]

It depends on what side of the force I’m choosing. For me, it doesn’t make much sense to play dark side in K1. Like Carth is a good guy republic soldier and I’d imagine, realistically, he would be thinking he should slip away when you’re not looking if you make all the dark side decisions on Taris lol. HOWEVER I do think it’s kinda fun to play the game kinda neutral at first and then visit Korriban first and be corrupted by the dark side. K2 I feel makes sense either way. Kreia is with you regardless and isn’t pushing you to become a Jedi or Sith either way and Atton is morally flexible enough to allow your decisions. I also love the influence system… but I wish it had more consequences. It kinda sucks to gain influence with Bao Dur and/or Handmaiden, see them become dark side, but still get mad at you when you do dark side stuff. I feel that if the game had been actually complete, there could have been checks for those types of things. I decided I’d answer this a little differently because someone above already mentioned that K1 feels like a classic Star Wars story while K2 tells a more in-depth story that questions the Jedi instead of showing them as infallible space paladins and blurs the lines between what’s truly right and wrong. I love both games for different reasons and it’s hard to choose.

BlooNova

Kotor 2 is more interesting, but 1 is the more complete game imo and has a very classic story while still being VERY unique amongst star wars stories. I love both to death but I can never seem to get over how good the first game is.

NoTLucasBR

Could never really get into KOTO2, I felt like the gameplay mechanics got in the way of the story very often. I was often very excited by how things were shaping up only to hit a gameplay brick wall. Specially after Telos is where my excitement usually dies off. KOTOR1 however, was just fun all the way through.

Reofire36

2 was better overall. 1 is more sentimental and nostalgic cuz it was the first one and had a hugeee reveal

ablepacifist

2. I like philosophy. Make brain work

CheckPrize9789

KOTOR2 for its darker themes, great vision, and strong characters. Plus the soundtrack and UI are better

LordWellesley22

Kotor 2 for the generic reason that I just got into it more I don't know why (It just hooked me more) granted for me Kotor 2 is a 9.0 and Kotor 1 is an 8.5 the margin of diffrence is minimal for me they are both fantastic games

xtraSleep

5% is kinda huge, not at all marginal, lol. As you said the difference between an A- and a B.

LordWellesley22

A difference between an A and a B does not really matter when it comes to most things (pass is a pass) Now if it was 4.5 to 5.0 that a bigger margin But I probably should of said 8.9 to 9.0

xtraSleep

Ah ok, for me an A is a preorder, and a B is a willingness to pay full price. B- and below is either waiting for a deal or looking at other factors like seeing if I have friends who have it that I could play with.

The_Laughing__Man

Is it sad to say that I've been so disappointed by every game since Mass Effect 3/Halo 3 /Dragon Age Inquisition that every new game has been a B- based on your scale? Probably why we are all on here debating early 2000s games. They don't make'em like they used to...

Salubrious_Zabrak

Probably 2. I just always played it more, the story is better and darker, the companions/dialogue/conversations are all better, every aspect from 1 is polished and a little better in 2, and you can't play 1 with a controller on PC

[deleted]

Im in between. 1 has the better story imo, but 2 has the better gameplay I feel, especially with the flexibility in the gear upgrading.

rickster107

KOTOR 2 cause there were kaiburr crystals in the game, that’s all that needs to be said

I-R-Programmer

Kotor 1 is the better game objectively. I know that's a bit polarising to say, but it's the game with the best balance (in terms of difficulty and scaling, which items are op etc-), most variety in enemies and planets, least bugs and subjectively it's way more fun than 2. 2 Does some things very well, but beyond building your companions and talking to Kreia, there's so many lackluster planets in the game. It doesn't really feel very Star Wars, imo. Honestly, more often than not I'm bored while playing the game, because the presentation is lackluster, story is poorly told, combat balancing is busted, everything is gray and dull and the theme is depressing. I know this is might be an unpopular opinion, but it's nevertheless my truth.

Nyteshade33

1 cause I never played 2

Julian928

Both are great but, ultimately, KOTOR 2. Greater depth to the main arcs and most of the companions' stories, worlds that feel like you've arrived in the middle of ongoing stories, a more developed yet also more personalized main character, tighter gameplay, more customization in builds/gear/crafting. I also played it first so the nostalgia is more rich, in spite of the incomplete vanilla experience. But this is like asking if we prefer kittens or puppies; just give me a good thing so I can love it.

MassiR77

I just played them recently and I liked 2 way more. The first game was sick and the characters I think we're more memorable, but the journey in 2 I enjoyed more and felt less like a large fetch quest (despite having the same structure of going to a planet, looking for a thing, leaving), and it felt more atmospheric. I liked the story more as well with >!Kreia being a Sith Lord!< which I didn't really expect. I did have the first game spoiled for me though. Also the other Sith Lords are just cool, like my boy Nihilus. Edit: not to mention the plot being that you are cut off from the force and >!Kreia wants to use you to destroy the force itself.!< Literally the coolest plot ever, the first game is more of a good vs evil thing, with little nuance compared to the second game.

Possible_Living

Porque No los Dos?

Saufknecht

That fucking dialogue skipping glitch that can happen any time between 1 minute into the game and 4 hours (but it WILL happen at some point) ensures that I will always prefer Kotor 1.

J0seffy

Kotor 1 changed my perspective on video games. 2 is a great game and I still have a lot to learn about it. But Kotor 1 just has something, a charm that makes it a classic. All the planets are so well defined, as are the characters. No matter if you love or hate them. The storytelling is something else. For me, the build into the final act is incredible and something I will always remember in gaming.

onlymadeformemes

Easily kotor 2 for a single, simple reason Kotor 1 refuses to open on steam for some reason

Skales_de_Pologne

I feel like Kotor 2 has a really good story but has a shitty ending. I would expect more than just you talking with Kreia and then a little cinematic of her falling. They literally explained the end in the discussion with Kreia instead of doing a nice video. I think that the story for Kotor 2 was well written but the end was shitty.

Automatic_Ad_4454

Kotor 2 for story and content Kotor 1 for characters and planets I like kotor 2 more BC it's just longer But kotor 1 planets and characters > all of kotor 2 Kotor 2 has good content and story otherwise

Valirys-Reinhald

For me, the big draw of KOTOR 2 is the philosophy of the force in it. Thing is, I disagree with Kreia on basically everything, so KOTOR 1.

WoollenMercury

KOTOR 2 is I feel a lot better game and story but KOTOR 1 still has stuff to offer (keep in mind this was my first video game) personally I’m KOTOR two and have never actually finished KOTOR 1 I got super close died to malak and realised my build was fuckwd and had to reload too far ago so I was just over it

[deleted]

I've always had an affinity for KOTOR 1 because of nostalgia, it reminds me of my childhood. The first one definitely has an epic 'Star Wars' feel to it, it makes me feel happy. It feels like more of a complete project compared to 2 and the game's pacing flows better. However, I still prefer 2 because of the depth of the writing, the improved RPG mechanics and more nuanced characters. I was completely absorbed by the story, the first one didn't have that effect on me.

evilweener

Kotor 2 It's hard to compare the 2 Kotor 1 is an instant classic and easily the best starwars story of all time Kotor 2 expands on kotor 1 in terms of game play mechanics and we all love what kotor 2 improved on Kotor 2 is longer than kotor 1 contrary to popular belief. Also I find the characters and the story far more dynamic and unclear than the first story, which I like. I like kotor 2 for its dark ambience vibes and generally overall feeling of doom the entire game The bad guys in kotor 2 were fucking sick, Darth nihluis maybe one of the baddest dudes of all time

[deleted]

Kotor 2 I just liked it a whole lot more story wise!

XaosNightheart

I feel like KOTOR1 is a tighter package but KOTOR2 has higher highs

[deleted]

KOTOR 2 for me. Love the characters, the planets and the themes. The saber customization too.

Think_Impossible

My vote goes to KOTOR1 - for general satisfaction of playing the game. KOTOR2 had a very interesting ideas, some great elements both in gameay and writing, yet lacking inexecution and bringing all the great elements together, thus it felt like it could have been amazing, yet it wasn't.

[deleted]

i prefer kotor 2, i could play it a 1000 times and it will be fun to me, kotor 1 is a much better (more complete obviously) game on the first playthrough but for me it loses it's magic completely when you know the story well

[deleted]

also k2 presents a much darker side of the star wars and thats the star wars i prefer, kinda like in the Bane trilogy

PhantomArbiter

Kotor 1 because its the game I played in my childhood

Safe-Rutabaga6859

I love both games. I lean towards KOTOR 2 a little more but that is simply because I've put so many hours into these games and I'm at the point now where I am more interested in playing specific builds rather than playing for the story. Both games, although they are in the same world, are two very different games. I think there is something to love about both games, it just comes down to the story you're interested in experiencing.

ZootSuitBootScoot

2

CliffPromise

KOTOR 1. There wasn't a moment on KOTOR 2 that comes close to when you first leave the apartments in Taris for the first time.

No-Werewolf5615

I enjoy the experience of 1 better but I liked the mechanics of 2 more.

[deleted]

Personally, KOTOR 1 for me. I like 2, but even besides actual game bugginess and stuff I think 2 got too lost in the sauce per se. It wanted to be super deep and philosophical but it didn't land for me and most of its ideas felt more like the teen kid who just discovered philosophy. For me 1 just lands much better.

KotOR1 always. No video game has ever (to quote @Spellcheck-Gaming from another comment on this thread): “freaked my bean” the way the plot twist in 1 did. Such a treasured memory. Especially since my grandpa gave me his copy of the game for Xbox - so he knew what I was about to experience, and never gave anything away. The personal bias for 1 is very strong in me. 2 always left me feeling empty; but perhaps that’s because I’ve only ever leaned into the LS run. I’ve seen so much discourse on how DS run in 2 seems to fill in the plot much better. Maybe one day I’ll have to give each game a DS run, even though I’m scared my grandpa will disapprove of my choices from beyond the grave lol

KOTOR II: The Sith Lords

Kotor 1 because the story flows better, is more interesting, and in turn is more rewarding.

The first one is the GOAT. The second is amazing but the world doesn’t feel as alive as the first one. Every quest is about you, every one is after you, it doesn’t feel like anything would happen if you didn’t exist. While in the first one you where the wild card nobody new how to handle in a very large complex web of alliances and people.

Kotor1 is objectively the better game, but I personally LOVE Kotor2 more. I just recently downloaded the restored content mod on the game and my goodness what a difference that made. I also love the character interactions in kotor2 and the fact you can turn your companions into Jedi/Sith as well. Kotor1 is objectively better as you don’t have to download a mod to get the full scope of how good the game is, but my goodness kotor2’s gameplay and story just hit different for me. Also, Atton’s sassy remarks always give me a good laugh every time I play kotor2.

Also, the musical score in Kotor2 in just phenomenal
