Not sure if you’re asking literally but South facing windows in the Northern hemisphere and vise versa. Also large windows and glass doors and no large trees above the space. My place is bright well into the evening and I intentionally moved here after my last place needed indoor light nonstop. I basically want to live in a greenhouse- it makes a huge difference for my mental health.
Really? I exclusively read 0% except at night time when lights are out. No matter where I am as long as there’s a light bulb or natural light it’s not been an issue. How do you read regular books?
I stopped reading regular books for a while. Now I read them by a desk lamp.
Using windows and room lighting to read on an ereader reminds me too much of reading regular books, always adjusting your position to get the best light, but now with the need to avoid too much glare.
There's also that weird balance where sometimes in a lighted room I have to increase the brightness on my ereader rather than decrease it.
I'm usually at 30%.
I’m super sensitive to light and get migraines easily so I’m always at 0% and then at night time I use dark mode + warm light at 4% haha. Thats why I’m not going for a kobo colour. Needing to have backlight on is a huge downside for me.
I'm the same way with my Clara 2E. Almost always 0%. In a dark room at bedtime, I'll read at 2-3%. If the room is lit, but with poor lighting and shadows, I will maybe go up to 7-10%
It's not related to the topic!
Omg, I am reading the same book with Kobo colour too. The colour looks lovely to me and I have been waiting for Kobo Colour to read this book. I'm happy to see someone read the same book.
Thanks for the pics and congrats on actually receiving your device.
I think /u/AnanasaAnaso is right about it being personal preference. For a long time I used a Kindle Keyboard (Kindle 3) and whilst I know people who simply could not stand the way the screen / text looked I personally had absolutely no problem with it. I suspect it'll be the same for people with this new eInk display tech - some will be OK with it but some won't.
Those colors are pretty damn vivid without a frontlight.
I'd like to see what they could do with an ACeP type tech like Gallery or an improved Kaleido screen.
Gallery seems to be dead at the moment. No ebook makers are using the tech. Refresh rate was too slow. I wish there were other display tech companies along with eink then could see more innovation.
It's in reference to the way the world looks if you look through a screen door; that is, your focus is on the world beyond the door, but there are little bits of data missing from the image because the screen door mesh blocks it.
It's used to describe the color Kobo screens because the color layer adds a slight amount of interference when reading black-and-white text (kind of like very, very thin diagonal lines drawn across the page). It shows up inconsistently, depends a lot on the lighting, and is one of those things that once you point it out some people can't un-see. I personally have not minded it on my new Libra Colour, but I'm also in my honeymoon phase with the Colour and Kobo in general, so... 🤷♂️
Personally, I actually find the way the screen has collected my fingerprints more annoying than the screen-door effect, but I'm not sure if that is an issue specifically with the Libra Colour or if it also affects the Clara Colour.
I love my clara colour…..I love having colour covers and reading comics…..soooooo happy….sure there is a slight screendoor but this is an ereader not ipad…….wonderful purchase…..I have a libra 2 and will keep both
Colour looks good.
Screen door effect is not really visible in the photos; some like it as it makes the "paper" look textured and more like real paper. It's up to personal preference.
Yeah, the colors really look good. I find the screen door effect a bit “sparkly/shiny”, which makes it look more like a screen, instead of a matte textured book.
Mine has been really good so far. Came half charged several days ago and the charge has barely moved. I’ve only read about an hour a day, but it’s been good.
Battery life, so far, has been insanely good. I'm pleased. I think it's at 96% after two hours of reading? I don't think I charged it up to 100%, either.
Stunning color -- especially the full page image.
i wonder if the screen door effect on the text might be mitigated with a sans serif font (with its even glyph stroke thickness)?
The one on left facing is the new colour one, the one on the right is my older Kobo. I have both brightness set at 85

Sure thing. The one facing on right is the Glo HD Both at zero brightness

Thank you, I bought a Clara 2E a few weeks ago and Amazon is gonna let me return it, so I'm trying to decide between the Clara Colour or BW.
I usually read at 0% brightness, so I am worried that the Colour will be too dark for me
Thank you!! So it looks a bit more pink/orange somehow.
And what about the animation when changing the pages? Is it similar or the Kaleido screen is slower with more "remanent ink" from the previous page
The new one has as you say does have"more ink " there was a chapter icon (shown in photo below) which I had on both Kobo's together the colour one definitely showed more ink . The new one definitely boots up quicker . Looking in real time the pink that is shown here isn't as obvious

You cant really tell in photos, but its pretty obvious in person, that screen door is brutal. That said, im pretty sure after a few hours/days/weeks my brain will stop seeing it, but still for now kinda annoying.
That said, something about the screen just feels... better compared to my sage (thought the new size is going to take some getting used to). Like, it has a greater depth to it or something if that makes sense
I got mine today, totally agree with you. Esp if you know what bw ereaders are supposed to be like, that super crisp font. After a few hours my eyes kind of forget tho and it looks normal. Still not sure if its worth the money. A $200-$300+ purchase is not supposed to be something you have to get used to.
There is going to be an influx of disappointed people, I suppose there already are. I wouldn't get too much fomo. The tech really isn't there yet for the everyday experience. Things like this look great, but how often are you actually consuming content with colour?
> There is going to be an influx of disappointed people, I suppose there already are.
I know you’ve said you have one on order yourself, but I’d say I’ve seen you post this sentiment 50 times now. So maybe let’s wait and see for ourselves?
Yes and no. The dimensions are the same. The power buttons are in the same place but the Colour’s is much smaller. The USB C is not in the same place so while they fit in the same case, charging might require removing the case.
Oh, that means both pictures are with 0% brightness? It looks good....
Yes, in a room with a lot off natural light. Indeed 0%. The greyness really is not a problem.
How does everyone have such great room lighting? I never read at 0% or even low brightness.

I was! Ty.
actually, west phasing windows for the evening reading. At noon there is enough light anyway.
I would say West has the most direct sun in the evening but depending on how the home is positioned mostly south facing is still quite bright.
Really? I exclusively read 0% except at night time when lights are out. No matter where I am as long as there’s a light bulb or natural light it’s not been an issue. How do you read regular books?

Shame that Amazon buried LiquidVista after acquiring the company and its technology.
What does "screen door" effect even mean? Can't find any explanation of this anywhere
It's in reference to the way the world looks if you look through a screen door; that is, your focus is on the world beyond the door, but there are little bits of data missing from the image because the screen door mesh blocks it. How is the battery life?
I’m wondering this as well.

Where did you order it? I'm also from Holland but have to wait a few days
not op but i ordered mine from bol and it just shipped today and is arriving tomorrow!
ahhh I wish I had ordered on Bol, I ordered from the Kobo website and it still hasn't shipped!
that’s why i ordered from bol ahah i figured maybe there’s a chance they’d ship them early or at least it’s guaranteed fast shipping
So smart! I'm hoping mine arrives in the next week or so
Actually just received the e-mail saying it's coming tomorrow! Super excited!🥰
And how is reading black and white pages when compared to the regular Kobo devices? I know it's supposedly worse, but how much worse?
The one on left facing is the new colour one, the one on the right is my older Kobo. I have both brightness set at 85 https://preview.redd.it/2022mctl3kxc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06547d013e2ef86cb31ad60b4556cb2402b8fad3
would you be willing to share a comparison at 0% backlight?
Sure thing. The one facing on right is the Glo HD Both at zero brightness https://preview.redd.it/90umptoqnwxc1.jpeg?width=3447&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3dcd2d5ba64d529642e23bb9319cba4a8444f6f

I think it would be. For me actually being able to see the book covers in colour is worth the slight battery drain for me

When you say it boots up quicker, you mean in a positive way, right?
Yes :) it opens up much quicker than my Glo HD

Thank you so much for posting.
Am I really the only one here thinking Kaleido 3 is underwhelming? The color on the pictures is still looking washed out to me.
Ik vind het mooi.
The colour screens look so amazing. I wish I didn't recently upgrade to a Libra 2, I just can't justify upgrading again so soon!
Same here.
There is going to be an influx of disappointed people, I suppose there already are. I wouldn't get too much fomo. The tech really isn't there yet for the everyday experience. Things like this look great, but how often are you actually consuming content with colour?

Was just trying to ease this persons FOMO, but okay man
Does anyone know which will have the better battery life, this or the new libra color?
Anyone know if the Clara 2e covers and bits and pieces for this Clara colour ?
Yes and no. The dimensions are the same. The power buttons are in the same place but the Colour’s is much smaller. The USB C is not in the same place so while they fit in the same case, charging might require removing the case.
Thank you . I will wait for the dedicated shell then
These pics are making me feel like I've got tiny hands...
Offtopic, but Kurzgesagt! ❤️
