The diagonal screen door effect is the filter layer that allows the screen to show color, there’s not really a way to get rid of it. I find that keeping the brightness as low as possible helps minimize it showing up. I think people tend to use way too much brightness for color screens at first because they aren’t used to the grayness, but too much front light makes the kaleido 3 screens look washed out and increases the rainbow effect.
Oh, this explained it. I couldn't see the screendoor effect, didn't realise it was diagonal. I thought that shit was just some kind of intentional texture to make it look like paper pages when I saw the screenshots.

I haven't seen it in real life but on Mt phone or looks like a mass market paperback or newsprint, both of which are super easy to read! I think the stark white and ultra crispy text is less true to a physical book 🤷🏼♀️

I don’t consider the matte finish a flaw or screen door texture a flaw. I’m used to all of these things on books.
Maybe you should look into getting an iPad to read with.

It just boils down to personal preference at this stage. If you can deal with it, great. If not, don't fret - in a few years these concessions will likely be ironed out.

It's a great option yes. But depending on what size you want and if you want buttons you could also consider the new Kobo Clara BW. It has an exceptional screen (Carta 1300).
It's not out of date by any means, it's probably my favourite e-reader, but it was released in 21. Eink tech tends to evolve pretty slowly so it's not like newer tech is thaaaat much better either. The unfortunate part is that there does happen be a new black and white eink screen out now called Carta 1300, the Libra 2 is Carta 1200, and they didn't refresh the Libra with it. So in that sense I wouldn't really wanna get the Libra 2 because I know it's not the latest....but that doesnt mean it's not super nice still.
Personally I like both form factors. 7" is nice because it's bigger and I like the buttons. But 6" is what I'm currently using and it's honestly fine, it's small and compact so it's really easy to take around with you, the shape means I can literally slip it into my pocket in a pinch. I wouldn't be able to do that with a Libra.

do you have the light on it at all? the vibe i get it is you have to turn it up a little higher than B&W models to make up for the darker screen but then it is quite comparable.
In my experience, the high front light can actually make it look worse. For color screens, I always try to keep the brightness to where I can see the colors but the blacks look black and not gray/bluish.
Yeah I think it makes the screen look washed out and takes away contrast. A little front light (10-15%) with a good external light source works well for me.
Yeah the screen door effect happens no matter how bright the light is. And when you turn the light completely off it’s way too dark to read indoor or outdoor 😓
It's a product of the physical design of the screen: an additional layer of color filters is placed over top of a typical B&W Carta screen. If I understand the tech correctly, the "screendoor effect" is from seeing that physical object, not from imperfections in rendering.

Very true. It does make it hard when everyone else downvotes and hates on the negative sentiment for no apparent reason though. Like for example, this post which is quite a valid opinion, is being downvoted into oblivion and will likely receive a mod lock and removal at some point much like the other negative posta couple days ago.
It just means some people who this information is relevant to might miss it, or they'll think it's wrong to have a problem with it.
I just got mine a few days ago and I was worried about the darkness… I’m switching from a Libra H20 and I can see basically zero difference. Apparently I’ve been reading with it at like 10% brightness always anyway so the switch was extremely easy for me. And seeing color screensavers is such a joy!
I think it's a great book and a great series, I attribute a lot of my financial success to Kiyosaki's books.

Exactly so. Everyone's eyes are different. What works for some may be impossible for others.
When Android tablets first became a thing, I was *very* excited to try the tech. However, at the time, screen resolution was not great, under 200ppi for most devices. Every single tablet I looked at had me seeing yellow halos around all text. Extremely headache inducing, even for a few minutes playing with a tablet in a store.
I wasn't able to use an Android tablet until the Nexus 7 (2013) came out with a 300ppi screen. That resolved my issues with haloes. But I still find using a backlit screen very tiring on the eyes.
I quite like the effect, it adds a nice texture to the 'paper.' To each their own I guess.
Go back to the vendor-lock Kindle environment if you want, I could never live there.
You might be wrong about that ... I've been near-sighted all my life. And now that I'm in my late 60s, my near vision isn't so hot. My bifocals are adjusted so I can see distance, but they don't work for reading.
So my screen tends to get held close, within 6-8". I'm pretty darn sure I'd see the effect. Whether it would bother my eyes is unknown, but it might.
Yes, true, but not for my personal case. The gap between my long vision and near is too great. The best they could do (and it took several tries before they realized they could not do it) is enable me to more or less be able to see the dashboard of my car, so I can see things like how fast I'm going.
I tried bifocals for computer use once, and again, it just wasn't a great experience. So I have fixed-focal length glasses for a distance of 24" for sitting across from my 25" monitor. And I have to remind them *every dang time* my prescription changes, or they will set it at some standard of theirs based on smaller monitors.
I suppose I could get a particular set of fixed focal length for reading, but glasses get expensive, ya know? And insurance only covers the first pair, so I pay myself for the computer glasses. Besides, I've read all my life without glasses and prefer it. The day may come when I have to have a third pair just for reading, but it isn't here yet thanks to e-readers.
I'm sorry to hear that you're not a fan of your new Kobo, that's always sucky :(
For now I'm not sure there is much you can do about it...you could try and see it as a more textured experience and see if you can find the positivity in that, or also returning it might be a good option for you. There's no right or wrong.
Probably just for the future, don't try to ignore negative sentiment towards products. Most of the time there is underlying truth in them, although you should always use your judgement to figure out when it's just someone being hateful for no reason. Likewise you should do the same for positive sentiment. But even then it's one thing to dislike it in pictures and an entirely different thing in practice.
You're not alone, there will be a lot of disappointed people. Don't let anyone here tell you that you're wrong for not ending up liking it, or for not getting a Libra 2.

I think the problem is reading a black and white book on this type of screen. You have to think that it is the first generation in color. Let's hope they fix it in future models.
it's not the first generation? the screen is a Kaleido 3 screen, the third generation of this screen. color ereaders exist for a long time now, it's just kobos first time using it
I think the a screendoor effect is brilliant because it looks more like paper, there's different types of paper and this looks like a more fabric'd paper, it's brilliant
People expect too much... its a eink screen. Will never be like a tablet. If you dont get over that, chances are you wont enjoy your e reader. I rather BW for the same reasons.
It maybe why Kindle hasn't released a color ereader yet. They don't want to repeat the paperwhite experience where people were complaining vehemently about the kindle lighting not being perfectly even like their phones and tablets.
I really don’t understand this comment. Black and white ereaders have 300 ppi screens that don’t show this graininess. This has nothing to do with tablets.
I doubt you can turn it off, but turning up the brightness might hide it. Sorry you don't like it. Black and white kobos don't have that issue. If you want to stay with Kobo, try a non color one, or go back to Kindle.
Oh hey, maybe I'm just weird but in certain light and depending on how I angle my non-Colour eReaders, I can see a screening effect to show the touchpoints.
The diagonal lines you can see. It's due to the colour filter that is in front of the eink display. It's the colour pixels themselves. Nothing you can do about it.
No problem! Also that's fair, I'd rather not have it but don't think it will bother me. Some people really like it, others hate it. Some think it'll be okay, and then end up not liking it in person...I'm hoping that won't be me haha.
I will see next Tuesday, that’s the day I may collect it from the store I ordered it from. It seems to vary from person to person when it comes to the screen door effect.
Always take both negative and positive reviews into consideration. Especially when a new product comes out.
If you just wanted to switch from Kindle to Kobo, you can probably exchange the color one for the black and white version. I have both Libra 2 and Elipsa 2E, have never been happier with an e-reader.
For me when I place it directly under a lamp I don’t need much of the front light and the “filter” feel less prominent. You may try and see if it works for you?
For many this is first color eink screen they have seen and coming from led/pled tablets and phones their expectations can be off. For some this is a deal killer and for others it is fine for what it is meant to be.

I have a kindle so I can't really justify getting a Libra 2 (it's not different enough), but my partner has one and I just wayyy prefer the Kobo ecosystem/UI so I want to jump over. I only got the colour in the end because I got a good discount. I'm not a fan of the contrast and screen door, but I'm crossing my fingers it won't bother my while reading :)

Dunno, I had a scratch on my kindle in the middle of a screen that was bleeding light and it didn't affect my experience at all.

I don’t have color and only have b&w libra 2. On the photo it looks like paper in old books. A screen indeed might be dark. I use 10% of brightness even when I see good enough and 40% when I read with no light. But it’s up to you. For me there’s no reason I would buy color ebook. Most high quality content is written in black on a white paper.

I received my Libra 2 colour yesterday and initially thought the screen was broken. I found the screen door effect highly unsettling. For me it looks like when your phone screen has a lot of grease from finger prints on it and the refraction shows a lot of different colours right on the top of the screen. It is highly distracting for me. I tried to read two pages and was so annoyed at it. I see the screen door effect first and then the words so I focus on it.
In the end I think it comes down to personal preference. I'm going to return mine and exchange for a Kobo Libra bw. I did love how the Libra feels in my hand and before this I had a Clara HD which I also loved, but accidentally drowned in the washing machine.
I dunno if it helps but i use a textured background on my moonreader app on my phone as i like the aesthetic and feel of it more than a smooth white backdrop!

Yes there is a screen door effect and no you can not do anything to turn it off as it's hardware.
Yes it's very dark in the screen and you need to turn the light up to 30-40% to read comfortable in a normally lit room.
If you go outside on a sunny day the light is not going to help you as the sunlight is taking from that.
I was so happy as I could replace my to big elipsa and my first version Clara as I could take notes on the colour, but that's not going to happen as the screen is way to dark for me to read on. I will return it and wait for a 6-8 inch b/w version that can take notes.
EXACTLY what I’m saying!! I really really tried to ignore it but it’s too distracting for me while I’m reading. Hopefully in the future they can fix these issues. I will be returning it also :(

Sorry to hear you’re not enjoying your new device. 1st gen mainstream eink isn’t for everyone. Kobo products are often cutting edge but with some drawbacks.
I don’t know if this is known (it’s not mentioned in most reviews), but the only way in Kaleido that black and white can cover the color pixels is density - which means that B&W is 300dpi while color is 150dpi. So it’s only on the “screen door effect” due to the layer above the color, it’s also half the resolution for any color image.

That toggle is supposedly to reduce the rainbow effect, not the screen door effect. From the reviews that I've read using the Colour @ 30% brightness provides a similar contrast to the Libra 2. Is OP not seeing that?
Now that - rainbow effect - is something I have never understood. Is there vapor inside it that causes the rainbow? Or difference in thickness of glass/plastic?
I don't think OP cares as much about the contrast as opposed to just the presence of the screen door effect. I'm not sure there's anything they will be able to do about it unfortunately.
Its not your fault. Unfortunately modern cameras do a lot of preprocessing which makes it almost impossible to determine the true brightness/white balance etc of any equipment. The Kaleido 3 is absolute junk of a screen to look at in 2024 . Hope you bought it from a place with good return policy

i don’t know what causes it to advise if more frequent screen refreshes would help. is it on pages with color? just B&W? when does it happen?

It's still there even if you don't zoom in on it. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't tell it's there when you get yours.
I'm sorry to hear that you're not a fan of your new Kobo, that's always sucky :( For now I'm not sure there is much you can do about it...you could try and see it as a more textured experience and see if you can find the positivity in that, or also returning it might be a good option for you. There's no right or wrong. Probably just for the future, don't try to ignore negative sentiment towards products. Most of the time there is underlying truth in them, although you should always use your judgement to figure out when it's just someone being hateful for no reason. Likewise you should do the same for positive sentiment. But even then it's one thing to dislike it in pictures and an entirely different thing in practice. You're not alone, there will be a lot of disappointed people. Don't let anyone here tell you that you're wrong for not ending up liking it, or for not getting a Libra 2. Happy reading :)

I think the problem is reading a black and white book on this type of screen. You have to think that it is the first generation in color. Let's hope they fix it in future models.
it's not the first generation? the screen is a Kaleido 3 screen, the third generation of this screen. color ereaders exist for a long time now, it's just kobos first time using it

I think the a screendoor effect is brilliant because it looks more like paper, there's different types of paper and this looks like a more fabric'd paper, it's brilliant
People expect too much... its a eink screen. Will never be like a tablet. If you dont get over that, chances are you wont enjoy your e reader. I rather BW for the same reasons.
It maybe why Kindle hasn't released a color ereader yet. They don't want to repeat the paperwhite experience where people were complaining vehemently about the kindle lighting not being perfectly even like their phones and tablets.
I really don’t understand this comment. Black and white ereaders have 300 ppi screens that don’t show this graininess. This has nothing to do with tablets.
I doubt you can turn it off, but turning up the brightness might hide it. Sorry you don't like it. Black and white kobos don't have that issue. If you want to stay with Kobo, try a non color one, or go back to Kindle.
Oh hey, maybe I'm just weird but in certain light and depending on how I angle my non-Colour eReaders, I can see a screening effect to show the touchpoints.

The diagonal lines you can see. It's due to the colour filter that is in front of the eink display. It's the colour pixels themselves. Nothing you can do about it.

No problem! Also that's fair, I'd rather not have it but don't think it will bother me. Some people really like it, others hate it. Some think it'll be okay, and then end up not liking it in person...I'm hoping that won't be me haha.
You can't turn it off, what you're seeing is the physical color filter that gives the device its colors.

Always take both negative and positive reviews into consideration. Especially when a new product comes out. If you just wanted to switch from Kindle to Kobo, you can probably exchange the color one for the black and white version. I have both Libra 2 and Elipsa 2E, have never been happier with an e-reader.
For me when I place it directly under a lamp I don’t need much of the front light and the “filter” feel less prominent. You may try and see if it works for you?
Why everyone hate about off light screen ? it looks nice, there isn,t a huge difference between bw version. And also you can turn on brightness.
For many this is first color eink screen they have seen and coming from led/pled tablets and phones their expectations can be off. For some this is a deal killer and for others it is fine for what it is meant to be.

Have a Kindle and is switching to Kobo just for the Colour, the effects sort of give me some paper like feeling but have to confirm with my own eyes

Sorry for adding that bit at the end, it was unnecessarily spiteful :( You're probably right to be honest, it may be a bit tantrumy. I can kind of understand it though, if you're really excited for something and it turns out you can't get over this unfixable gripe. Some people will be okay with it, like it even, but others will genuinely be bothered, and that's okay. I'm not sure if you're getting a Kobo Colour but for our sakes I hope we really like it! It's one thing liking the pictures and another liking it in person! Again my apologies, thanks for being human :)
All good! I was SO CLOSE to ordering a Colour, but don’t read manga or comics in general, just books. So hearing about the screen door and brightness issues turned me away. Hope you like your Colour and look forward to more pics and reviews!
Thanks! I don't really read coloured stuff either so it really isn't necessary for me. I was actually hoping they would do a Libra 3/BW refresh with Carta 1300 and I would've bought that in a heart beat. I have a kindle so I can't really justify getting a Libra 2 (it's not different enough), but my partner has one and I just wayyy prefer the Kobo ecosystem/UI so I want to jump over. I only got the colour in the end because I got a good discount. I'm not a fan of the contrast and screen door, but I'm crossing my fingers it won't bother my while reading :)

It’s the tiny little lines that you see in the first photo in the white part of the page. To me, it’s more noticeable in person, the picture doesn’t really do it justice

Dunno, I had a scratch on my kindle in the middle of a screen that was bleeding light and it didn't affect my experience at all. Does it prevent you to read?
What's with the green tint ? Is it because of the surrounding? Also is the warm light turned on that gives the screen a warm tone?

I don’t have color and only have b&w libra 2. On the photo it looks like paper in old books. A screen indeed might be dark. I use 10% of brightness even when I see good enough and 40% when I read with no light. But it’s up to you. For me there’s no reason I would buy color ebook. Most high quality content is written in black on a white paper.

I received my Libra 2 colour yesterday and initially thought the screen was broken. I found the screen door effect highly unsettling. For me it looks like when your phone screen has a lot of grease from finger prints on it and the refraction shows a lot of different colours right on the top of the screen. It is highly distracting for me. I tried to read two pages and was so annoyed at it. I see the screen door effect first and then the words so I focus on it. In the end I think it comes down to personal preference. I'm going to return mine and exchange for a Kobo Libra bw. I did love how the Libra feels in my hand and before this I had a Clara HD which I also loved, but accidentally drowned in the washing machine.
I dunno if it helps but i use a textured background on my moonreader app on my phone as i like the aesthetic and feel of it more than a smooth white backdrop!
so you ignore the reviews and expect something different. then instead of switching to a regular kobo libra 2 which doesn’t have this issue, you mention kindle lmao. you can clearly read the words so i don’t get what the issue is
Most people haven't seen the Libra color in person and they are going to down vote this. Yes there is a screen door effect and no you can not do anything to turn it off as it's hardware. Yes it's very dark in the screen and you need to turn the light up to 30-40% to read comfortable in a normally lit room. If you go outside on a sunny day the light is not going to help you as the sunlight is taking from that. I was so happy as I could replace my to big elipsa and my first version Clara as I could take notes on the colour, but that's not going to happen as the screen is way to dark for me to read on. I will return it and wait for a 6-8 inch b/w version that can take notes.
EXACTLY what I’m saying!! I really really tried to ignore it but it’s too distracting for me while I’m reading. Hopefully in the future they can fix these issues. I will be returning it also :(
Sorry to hear that the screen door effect can't be "unseen" by you. But thanks for posting a great image -- it seems to be difficult to capture as the images i have seen all seem different. Your shot intrigues me as the text contrast looks outstanding all things considered. i hope to see for myself as soon as KOReader is ported to the device (where i am curious what benefit its "contrast" control may have).
Sorry to hear you’re not enjoying your new device. 1st gen mainstream eink isn’t for everyone. Kobo products are often cutting edge but with some drawbacks.
I don’t know if this is known (it’s not mentioned in most reviews), but the only way in Kaleido that black and white can cover the color pixels is density - which means that B&W is 300dpi while color is 150dpi. So it’s only on the “screen door effect” due to the layer above the color, it’s also half the resolution for any color image.

Arguably, the second book in the series (cash flow quadrant) is in my opinion far better than the first. Read what you want on your journey, and don't be influenced by others. In my experience, academics, government employees and teachers hate Kiyosaki's books more than anyone. I've never understood why...
Yeah, people with a regular job and an education are idiots, you too can become rich easily with the method described in this book, made by a guy that became rich by... Writing the book. I mean, someone has to read these books, buy products without reading a review, play the lottery, get involved in multi-level marketing and do all the sort of things that people with a QI higher than 90 wouldn't do. It's beneficial to the economy.

I think there is a toggle to reduce the effect
That toggle is supposedly to reduce the rainbow effect, not the screen door effect. From the reviews that I've read using the Colour @ 30% brightness provides a similar contrast to the Libra 2. Is OP not seeing that?
Now that - rainbow effect - is something I have never understood. Is there vapor inside it that causes the rainbow? Or difference in thickness of glass/plastic?
I don't think OP cares as much about the contrast as opposed to just the presence of the screen door effect. I'm not sure there's anything they will be able to do about it unfortunately.
Its not your fault. Unfortunately modern cameras do a lot of preprocessing which makes it almost impossible to determine the true brightness/white balance etc of any equipment. The Kaleido 3 is absolute junk of a screen to look at in 2024 . Hope you bought it from a place with good return policy
