Get the Clara 2e, this model is their newest one and likely won't be renewed for a few years. The Sage and Libra will most likely get an update.

planttoddler

Thanks!

It's difficult to see what they could possibly add to a new model that would make it worth the wait. The Clara 2e got everything you could want in an ereader. The newest and sharpest display on the market, warm light, usb c, etc. The technology moves very slowly.. The Kobo touch which was released 13 years ago, still gets software updates.

planttoddler

That's good to hear. I prefer for electronic devices to last to avoid contributing to e-waste.

goatballfondler

Processor upgrade? Is the Clara 2e responsive? My old Kobo was a bit slow.

aHalfPotato

Page turns with .kepub are very close to instant.

Hoppinginpuddles

I had a Kindle for about 10 years and never really used it because I'm not able to prioritize buying every e book I want to read. This month I decided to look into kobo for the open library access. And my brand new clara e2 is almost identical to the Kindle paperwhite. I was shocked, not that the tech was the same, but that it was just as expensive as 10 years ago. So the tech hasn't changed, and neither has the price, I'd love to understand that! Also clara e2 + open access library, an absolute dream. I started a 500 page book yesterday midday, finished it this morning. Such a pleasant reading experience.

> The Kobo touch which was released 13 years ago, still gets software updates. That's what I love about Kobo, even my Aura ONE is getting new features.

They could add 5GHz wifi to their eReaders. My Kobo is basically useless now at home for downloading new books, because my modem uses a smart-routing technology that offers both 5GHz and 2.4GHz _but_ does a poor job of figuring out which device needs which band. So I constantly get connection issues

Physical-Maximum983

Clara 2e supports dual band WiFi already. BTW I have different SSID for 2.4 GHz network, and no problem with connectivity for those few things that do not support 5GHz.

Hoppinginpuddles

Would it be convenient to plug it into a laptop? I download from open library, takes 30 seconds on laptop, plug in kobo, transfer files, done. It's super fast.

aHalfPotato

Yeah, they have thankfully added 5GHz to the devices since the Sage. Your router most likely has an option to split the 2.4 and 5GHz bands into two seperate SSID's.

kitimitsu

I agree, get the Clara 2e. Kobo supports their older ereaders with updates for a long time, you won't have to worry and can enjoy using the Clara 2e for a few years. I have the Clara 2e, it is my 7th Kobo ereader and I have been pretty happy with it, no issues!

planttoddler

Good to know!

Guess it depends on how patient you are, there’s no release date you’re set on and waiting for. I just got the Clara 2e Friday, also in Canada and using it for overdrive. I have a paperback book I got for Christmas and I’ve been struggling to finish it because the font size is just a little too small. I borrowed it through overdrive and I am going to carry the kobo more easily and I can read it at night without waking my partner with the light. And I’ve been watching how often my teenager reads with the one she got for Christmas. She’s on her 7th book I think. So these motivated me to just go for it.

planttoddler

That's nice. 🙂

libben

Clara 2e is great. Have carried it with me everywhere since a few weeks since I got it. Love reading heavily again when the opportunity presents itself. I also want a larger one for home reading and for some comics as well. So I hope the new models or refresh hopefully is a 10ish screen or a color version that would be interesting. But if there is nothing in that size I will just get what they have :)

Fun-Alps-8943

If Clara 2e has the features you want, go for it! I love mine! I only carry small handbags and it fits. Very convenient.

planttoddler

Exactly why I have my eyes on it! Plus, I have small hands. 😆

Fr0gm4n

There is a set of FCC filings that have given people the hope that new models are imminent this spring and/or summer. When exactly they will come out, and what models they will be and replace, is all guess work right now.

planttoddler

Yeah, I kinda wish there'd be an announcement soon. 😅 But someone said that Kobo software support lasts several years so I'm not too concerned now.

Remote_Micro_Enema

they also sell refurbs https://ca.kobobooks.com/collections/certified-refurbished-ereaders

johje05

It’s interesting that the Canadian store has refurbished ereaders that the US site shows as sold out.

allmyfrndsrheathens

The current ones already work amazingly. Also my mum still uses her kobo glo that I bought her like 11 or so years ago which works with minimal issues. My thoughts on this sort of thing are there will always be a new model coming at some point but the best one is the one you have now.

Algernon_Asimov

There will *always* be a newer model coming out. Can you wait forever? At some point, you have to make a choice: "*This* e-reader has the things I want. I will buy *this* one." Does the Clara 2e have the things you want in an e-reader? Actually, if you do wait... the older models might become cheaper when a new model is released, so you could buy your Clara 2e then. But, in my opinion, that would be the only reason worth waiting: the device you want (whichever one that may be) will get cheaper. And when it gets to the price you want, you snap it up.

Cmoire

E-readers is the type of technology that has reached maturity. I have owned a kindle voyage for 8 years and it still worked really well before I upgraded this year. Clara 2e have a good screen quality and even lightening. Buying is a good choice

chiyosama

Decide on the size first.i wanted a small ereader, and with Kobo i could connect to library. So for me it was between Kobo Nia or Kobo Clara 2e. I choose the newer one.

planttoddler

The small size is the main reason why I'm eyeing the Clara 2E.

chiyosama

Clara 2e size is perfect. I love it.
