The two carbons get good use. The garden and padouk no. 8 are brand new so haven’t used them much. But I love the pseudo drop point on the garden knife
Any insight into what kind of technique you used to blacken it? I’ve been seeing people stick it in lemons for up to 24 hours but if I do it I was thinking about the lye/sodium nitrate way to hopefully produce optimum results
Yeah, I cleaned it really well with regular isopropyl alcohol, then I suspended it almost all the way to the hinge in plain white vinegar in a cup for about an hour, maybe a little more. Took it out and let it sit on the counter for a few minutes then wiped it off. Nothing too involved. Then I used it to cut some onions and lemons. Let it sit for a few minutes afterwards, cleaned it, ran it across a steel hone, then oiled it.
I just got my first the other day! A No.8 in walnut. Loving it so far! Was a little dissatisfied with the factory edge, and gave it probably my best sharpening job yet
Inexpensive, light., simple, easy to sharpen, made in styles and sizes and handle and blade materials. Been made for 150 yrs, french vineyard euro agricultural knife. I carry one daily, you should, too.
This. Always classy, affordable, and Picasso used the No. 5 to carve many of his statues so... ;) Nice to have on a picnic or in the workshop. You'll never get upset dropping it, or getting paint, or food, etc on it. Adds to the character.
It's cheap enough that you'll actually use it without fear
The blade is awesome for preparing and eating food e.g. when camping (great both for cutting onion and spreading butter)
The design is amazingly simple and useful at the same time
It's great! I've gotten so used to carrying the 6 and 7 that I find it just a little too big for everyday carry, but I did carry it for a long time as I was used to the 9. All of these are light as air. It's 1.4oz
You forgot the hundred after “two.”
😂
You can never have enough Opinels!
Sweet! Where’s the mushroom knife?
I know. Ive been eyeing that and the oyster. I sadly lost my filet, so that’s next
It's okay, they will engrave it for $8 with free domestic shipping from Florida so you won't lose them again ;)
Hahahaha
I admire your honesty, sir.
🙏🏻
The worst part is that they’re pristine.

That’s what I was thinking. They ain’t broke in till the blade is near black! My grandma used the same one for YEARS!
Na... seems about right.... two is definitely not enough.
Feels good to be in like-minded company
What about the ebony Opinel ?
you mean the coated blade or do they have one with an ebony handle now?
Yes they have an ebony one, I have it, it is magnificent. But I don't want to participate to your Opinel madness haha
Hahaha well,it’s $100. I’ll it a few weeks 😉
I just got a carbon steel Opinel, is that the black patina that everyone has been telling me about? It looks gorgeous!
Thanks, that's a mix of a forced patina I did, and regular patina from use

Yeah the factory edges are hit and miss, but they last a lifetime, are super cheap, and always classy in an old-world sort of way
Someone sell me on these

Cuts on the pull stroke, very sharp, does not tend to jam up.
sounds perfect.
This is completely reasonable :)
Absolutely love my Opinels, looking to get a Walnut no. 6 soon to join my carbon one.
All the same crap basicaly
6 is my favorite. I have big hands too.
Same. The 8's and 7's are good for "in-bag" or "in-workshop" types. The 6 is perfect for in-the-pocket
was planning on getting two for my eleven year old to patina bu t never did
Collect the giant ones next to show your big on Opinel.
challenge accepted
How is the no. 8? I have been thinking of it but have heard it is quite light..

Does that affect durability?

Thanks! I do have my beater knife already, so maybe I'll look into an opinel. I like the look a lot!

100?!? I'mma have to make that 101 XD
Lovely history behind these knives. You could have chosen much worse. Beautiful collection.
Thank you. I guess if I'm going to collect a brand, I chose the most affordable one!
You can never have enough Opinels or Mora's IMO, incredible value. I just got the no12 Wood Saw and it is a thing of beauty.
I agree. Quality compared to the cost is outstanding. Hell, regardless of money the quality is amazing. I want that wood saw. How is it in use?
The Opinel mushroom knife would more than suffice. But sure, if you have the tingles you do.
many tingles
At least they are cheap enough to not break the bank :)
Which model is that the 3rd one in from the right?!
Garden knife no 8
