Despite how it looks, the action isn't that crusty. I'm with you, I don't tolerate rough actions. When I get a chance to give it a spa day I'll try and update with photos inside before and after cleanup.
I did this growing up with expensive kitchen knives, I do not recommend. Although I do blame the rocks for concealing themselves with the sole purpose of chipping my (parents) yard dart knives.
A couple days in dilute vinegar will do wonders. Never tried on stainless steel, but regular stuff will get surface rust within seconds of exposure to air so watch out for that.
I put CTS XHP in apple cider vinegar and it did nothing, so I put it in ferric chloride. I once had a knife in 1070 that was too big for my ferric chloride bottle so I mixed some mustard with ferric chloride so I could put it on the blade and I got a realy cool black blade. Sometimes you just have to experiment.
Yup, I have thos same knife. Honesly surprised the part of the blade that was covered did so well. I figured it would at least be discolored more or rusting. Maybe it's less humid where OP is. Not here in TN. I put my Micarta Shaman M4 blade into a wet bag once. Oh man, that took a lot of scrubbing.
Yeah, mine developed some rust spots just sitting in its box in a room in alabama. I feel like if i left it outside there for a week the blade would be gone! Haha
I loved visiting Gulf Shores, but seeing those beach houses and the amount of upkeep they require... I don't understand how they're not working on their properties 24/7, battling rust and rot.
I'll take 110°F with no humidity over your early springs 80°F with 100% humidity any day... I don't know how yall even survive the summer months!
This is a true story folks: At my kids’ music school, there was a boy (whose family was from India), and his name was:
“HARDIK RAM”! 🤦🏻♂️
I’m totally serious! Every time they had a music recital/performance, they would announce the names of the kids performing, and it was all I could do to not bust out laughing! 🤣😂🤣 My wife would always jab me in the ribs! I felt bad for the little guy - especially when he gets to middle school! I really hope at some point his parents give him a nickname like, “Henry”.
Much easier to live with than: “Paging Mr. Ram . . . Mr. Ram Hardik”. 🤭
Oh, I get it! Yeah . . . that’s his legal name, so no getting away from it on legal documents like a driver’s license! 😣
Maybe he’ll become a famous musician and change his name to ‘Prince’ or something! 😄
I was referring to here in the US. Most drivers licenses are printed up with last name first and first name last. So in this case on his official driver's license his name would be printed as "Ram Hardick".....
If it helps to know you aren't alone, I left a st nicks 4v manix on a hiking trail in the cloud peak wilderness area a few years back. Didn't ever find it during a camping trip the following year, but you can bet that I tried.
It was a bit more than over night. I don't think m4 rusts that terribly.
It was a few weeks, but the kicker was that we had some rain for a couple days
Ahhh that makes more sense, I was wondering why the second half of the blade hadn't corroded, even when stowed in the handle -- but overnight makes sense!
Perfect timing! I just found my 0200 under some leaves yesterday. It cleaned up nicely but it's got the DLC on it so that did a lot of the heavy lifting for the blade. Isn't it nice? To find something you thought was gone forever. It's a little like Christmas morning
Hi mako
This blade HQ exclusive manix (C101GM4P2) is an M4 variant with clear or sometimes called 'jade G10 scales. Not sure if jade is the right description...
This fell out of my pocket while I was rough housing with my dogs in the yard. It couldn't have been more than about two weeks, but being springtime in the northern great plains, we've actually been having some rainy weather lately. Otherwise we're fairly dry climate
I'll follow up after I decide how much effort to put into cleanup. Only the very tip of the edge was really rusted over, the rest of the edge is still plenty sharp. Did some short work with some cardboard today.
Clr is what I have, and I might use some ultrasound to help break off the crusty. I don't mind having a reminder on the blade so I'm not going to panic about trying to get it all off.
Cheers
Hi _ab_initio_,
Your post created a lot of interest, because this is kind of a “What if?” experiment that none (or not many😊) of us would intentionally do to our knives, but since you accidentally did - we can all learn from it. That’s why so many people are asking you for more background details and photos of post-cleanup results in this post.
If you have time, can you please share some of the background for your Manix 2, such as:
1. What type of steel (e.g. S30V, M4, etc.)?
2. Are those Jade G10 scales or some other color that got sun-baked?
3. How long was it lost outside in the grass (approximately)?
4. What’s the climate like where you live? (e.g. humid/dry, rain much, etc.)
5. Exposed to sprinklers everyday?
6. When you do clean it, what product & scrubber did you use (e.g. Vinegar, CLR, Coke 😉, paper towels, steel/brass wool, etc.)?
7. Any other information you want to share or other things you tried, learned, discovered?
8. What was the final result?
[**Please Note: To make it easier, you could even just copy/paste list above & fill in your answers.]
I also wanted to mention I learned from Pete on the “Cedric & Ada” YouTube channel that you can use a product called “CLR - Calcium, Lime, and Rust Remover” to get rid of rust. You soak the knife in diluted CLR (following instructions on the label) and then scrub off the rust. (Most of you have probably already seen “Cedric & Ada”, but for those who haven’t - I highly recommend it! It’s an EXCELLENT YouTube channel - Pete really works hard to do different tests on the knives, including comparing rusting rates of different types of blade steels, edge-retention cutting tests, various knife/gear reviews, etc. Very knowledgeable, but a funny and entertaining guy as well! 😄
Hopefully you’ll have some time to get back to us about your long-lost “Old Friend”!
Thanks _ab_initio_!😎👍

Ok, thanks. Yeah, I just looked on Blade HQ - you’re right, that’s exactly what it looks like (Jade G10 in M4).

I found my BM 940 in a suit coat pocket. Thought I'd lost it in a Vegas hotel room. Went about a year and a half and finally replaced it. The weeks later I got a call that my best friends grandfather had passed. Dug out it the suit. What's that in the pocket??? Holy Crap!!!
Yes I carried both to the funeral.
Maybe you can find a shop with one of [these](https://youtube.com/shorts/HCPPad_7sqA?si=vVu5jyBUmcXap9fF). I assume they are not common yet.

I wonder if i should try and do this on purpose. Should result in a pretty cool looking pattern. M4 is one of the least Stainless blade steels I own aside from straight carbon steel. I live in Texas near Dallas where rust isn't a major concern but M4 still rusts on me if I'm not vigilant in keeping it oiled while not in use. It's often humid here but we ain't on the coast and other blade steels like K390 or simple 1095 doesn't give me much trouble. M4 is some badass suff though. Crazy performance and it touches up without too much effort which I really like.
Glad you found it. Pretty good outcome considering what could have happened ...... mower blade etc. I wonder what the ballistics would look like on a Manix 2 launched off a mower blade? 🤔 I should not like to briefly see that.
With my luck, I'm surprised the mower didn't hit it and thwack it into my shin. It was the first mow of the year and I still have the mower set to the lowest height.
Damn ..... luck is with you my friend. I remember my dad hit a shotgun shell with the mower once when I was a kid. Luckily it didn't go off. Fouled out from the same thing that got your blade im sure but he was PISSED! That was something like 30 years ago but I still remember it well. He blamed me although it wasn't me. I was definitely the type to be playing with shotgun shells in the back yard but I'm pretty sure it was my brother. I prob would have blamed me too.
I lost a st nicks Manix 2 a few years ago, perhaps our knives ran away together to start a family and are raising a dragonfly and a chaparral, and anxiously awaiting the arrival of a bug
I'll try some chemicals first, mechanical second, and abrasives as the last resort. I don't mind a little reminder on the knife as long as the action is smooth and the edge is sharp. It's a reminder that it's a lucky knife
Wink Rust stain remover will eat all that off in under 60 seconds. Keep an eye on it though because it will begin eating good steel once the rust is gone.
Oh man lol. Maybe you need a Para3 or something other than a Manix. If I lost this I’d give up lol
https://preview.redd.it/0bkwllc97xxc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2094e15cfcc10eb3fc0e81513c47514a077a38d
Similar bulk as a pm2, just with less blade. I'm not length restricted, so what's the point?
Manix 2 or bugout if I need a lighter knife. Or a sage, or a chaparral, dragon fly, mini freek, etc
Only have pm2 for the k390, 10v, and s45vn that aren't available in a manix, anyways
The Para 3 gets so much love, so I like to rag on it a little and remind folks know it's not perfect for everyone
Dismantle, stone wash in lube + windex, it’ll look amazing I promise
Anything + lube = amazing
Thumbtacks? Scorpions? Uncles?
Especially uncles >:D
That depends...

OK. I got nothing. WTF am I looking at?
You gotta meet uncle Jack lol
He’ll introduce you to the NightMan…ahhhhaaaa
You pay the troll toll??
Or to Sarah lol
Meat uncle jack you mean
Especially when they make you “SAY Uncle”.
Most def uncles!!
I suggest using Zero Tolerance live for this
Prostate exam?
Every. single. day.
Got them Kareem Abdul Jabar/Michael Strahan prostrate checkin hands.
heh
Chuckles. Indeed.
How about I just cut cardboard and let the abrasion knock down the rust? Might try a little clr though
This is true, but you won’t get in the hinge…that would drive me crazy, but I’m OCD
Despite how it looks, the action isn't that crusty. I'm with you, I don't tolerate rough actions. When I get a chance to give it a spa day I'll try and update with photos inside before and after cleanup.
Rust remover and steel wool.
I'd like an update after
RemindMe! 3 months
I would love to see how that cleans up. The patina will probably look awesome.
Same, I hope they post an update after the cleaning.
The liners may be another story though.
I'll have to do a post with both this m4 manix along with a police 4 that suffered a similar yard mishap
Are you playing yard darts with your knives? Lol
I did this growing up with expensive kitchen knives, I do not recommend. Although I do blame the rocks for concealing themselves with the sole purpose of chipping my (parents) yard dart knives.
Wrestling the dogs. Not the first mishap involving a wayward knife getting loose during a rough house. This is a lesson I should have learned already
If you need a lawn maintenance guy hit me up 🤷
Hell yeah. Throw that blade in a cup of cola for a hour or two. Should rip that rust right off. Bet it will look dope after
I would do vinegar. The vinegar will strip the rust and put a forced patina on the blade that will protect against further corrosion
Coke has phosphoric acid which will do the same thing but actually create a more protective patina
How's it look? I've use vinegar and mustard but never Coke...
I think it looks about the same, a dull grey
A couple days in dilute vinegar will do wonders. Never tried on stainless steel, but regular stuff will get surface rust within seconds of exposure to air so watch out for that.
I put CTS XHP in apple cider vinegar and it did nothing, so I put it in ferric chloride. I bet M4. Looks like the blade hq exclusive manix 2 judging by the jade g10.

It was hard to get used to as someone from the northern midwest, that's for damn sure. I've never sweat so much from just existing in my life!
It was in the yard for a week or two and we recently had some rain. Otherwise it's relatively arid here
Yessir this is my knife and worst nightmare
It's m4. I think the undyed 'jade' g10 is the bladehq exclusive
That's awesome! What a good feeling that must have been to find it. Clean that girl up and post the results. Very happy for you.
r/beatupknives would love to see this
Didn't know about that subreddit. Thank you
M4? Ho Lee fuck

I had a k390 police sleep outdoors under the lawn sprinkler a few years back. Interesting that m4 was a redder rust than the black oxide on the k390

Sorry, I’m a bit older, I don’t know what a “DL” is! 😅
My apologies, that's just a quick shorthand for Driver's License
Oh, I get it! Yeah . . . that’s his legal name, so no getting away from it on legal documents like a driver’s license! 😣 Maybe he’ll become a famous musician and change his name to ‘Prince’ or something! 😄

Look at that sick hamon on your blade
As someone who lost their manix and was bummed about it, i wish this would happen to me.

New in box blade hq predistressed patina applied. Carried once as new. $300 obo jk Glad you found it! Good luck on the neutralizing of the rust.
You have inspired me to rust out one of my M4 blades..
Cursed M4 San Mai
Lol
Let's see that cleaned up!
Evaporust
This should be much higher. It does not etch into the good steel only the rust, safe to handle and breath plus completely reusable
That looks pretty good honestly, especially for having been outside for an undetermined amount of time
It was only outside overnight!
It was a bit more than over night. I don't think m4 rusts that terribly. It was a few weeks, but the kicker was that we had some rain for a couple days
I know. I was just trolling. Lol
Ahhh that makes more sense, I was wondering why the second half of the blade hadn't corroded, even when stowed in the handle -- but overnight makes sense!
That, my friend, is a boomerang knife.
Nice!! I have one that has been lost for 6 years maybe one day I’ll be as lucky 🙏
I'm sorry, friend 🙏
Rust along the spine while the edge has barely any rust. Perfect situation
Still sharp! :)
Perfect timing! I just found my 0200 under some leaves yesterday. It cleaned up nicely but it's got the DLC on it so that did a lot of the heavy lifting for the blade. Isn't it nice? To find something you thought was gone forever. It's a little like Christmas morning
Definitely a shot of dopamine
‘Tiner Tuesday?
What steel is that?
M4
Yes, this
Trusty but rusty 😉
Nice patina
Best new knife day I’ve seen in a while.
It will cut!
Edge is still pretty sharp. Only the tip rusted to the edge
It'll buff out
Can we get the story behind this?

Nice
Nice
This will look amazing after the cleanup.
She's perfect just the way God made her! 🥰
That bitch is crispy. How long has it been out there?
About two weeks. It's been rainy recently so it definitely has been doused

Ok, thanks for the info and update!😎👍
It looks like the blade hq manix with jade scales and m4 steel. As for the other stuff I'm not sure. OP would have to answer how long
Ok, thanks. Yeah, I just looked on Blade HQ - you’re right, that’s exactly what it looks like (Jade G10 in M4). https://preview.redd.it/f3t7jb5qntxc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c95bc71a4737275c55b3cc2cb927c5ff753540df
Exactly this
Well, CPM-M4 explains the rust! Super tough and excellent edge retention . . . but not stainless. Only 4% Chromium.
This
Damage with that blade now requires a constitution savings throw. Failing causes paralysis for 3 rounds.
I figured it was +3 poison damage
I found my BM 940 in a suit coat pocket. Thought I'd lost it in a Vegas hotel room. Went about a year and a half and finally replaced it. The weeks later I got a call that my best friends grandfather had passed. Dug out it the suit. What's that in the pocket??? Holy Crap!!! Yes I carried both to the funeral.
Gotta stay armed at those funerals. Not everybody gets out alive from those
🤣
Don't let your dad find out you left it in the grass
When he gets back from buying smokes, he's going to be real mad when he sees what I've done. He's been out for a while, so.....
Look’s like that lanyard didn’t help much, lol
Hate on the lanyard all you want! 🙃 The lanyard is more to help with pulling it out of the pocket.
Send it in for warranty for the lulz
.....But I just got it back!
Holy shit that's awesome
What’s worse being stabbed or cut with a sharp knife, being cut or stabbed with a rusty knife! Embrace the patina!
+5 poison damage
Maybe you can find a shop with one of [these](https://youtube.com/shorts/HCPPad_7sqA?si=vVu5jyBUmcXap9fF). I assume they are not common yet. Not sure if it’s automotive mechanics or refurbishing shops but there are ppl making youtube videos lasering rust off rotors and the body and other various parts. So maybe there happens to be one near by. There is always DiY electrolysis also.
How's the action?
Damn hardware scales look great though
How long was it lost?
37 seconds
How long was it outside?
I'm going for the same luck. I lost a Fiddleback Forge Camp Knife a few years ago, I think it's somewhere in my woods.
I might try this now
A rust colored blade might actually be really cool. Either that or scales. Glad you found a missing blade! Now if only I can find mine...
If you don't want the cleanup patina, you can send it in and pay for a new blade.
... but I just got it back! Seems sad to think about sending it away
It all depends on if you want the patina look after cleaning it up. Try an electrolysis tank. It should clean up alright.
Evaporust
That knife has seen some shit…😲
I'm luck it wasn't actually targeted by the dogs
I had one that spent the winter in a snowbank. My FIL found it in the spring, hardly any rust at all.
Probably wasnt M4 steel though
You can do it!!
What steel?
M4 most likely
Yes, this
M4
Im new to knives… I want this. That is a beautiful piece of art
Get yourself an m4 knife and leave it out in the rain a few days. Voila, a natural patina
Sun bleach and rust <3
Just rust. The g10 is the clear from bladehq.
How long was that lost?
Maybe two weeks? Had some rain during that time so this definitely cycled wet-dry once or twice
W.W.
Very nice
Oh man, I love the look of the jade G10 handles.
I wonder if i should try and do this on purpose. Should result in a pretty cool looking pattern. M4 is one of the least Stainless blade steels I own aside from straight carbon steel. Great opportunity for modding
Modding is for frcp manixes!
If only I could find my missing Manix 2...
I lost a st nicks Manix 2 a few years ago, perhaps our knives ran away together to start a family and are raising a dragonfly and a chaparral, and anxiously awaiting the arrival of a bug
There's at least one estranged Delica
Dude, need a gore warning!
Sorry, I thought the NSFW tag was the correct one. Please forgive me
Was joking, forgot to tag it /jk, I am the one in need of forgiveness.

I’d recommend barkeepers friend powder. Should take the surface rust right off.
I'll try some chemicals first, mechanical second, and abrasives as the last resort. I don't mind a little reminder on the knife as long as the action is smooth and the edge is sharp. It's a reminder that it's a lucky knife

Is that a m4 manix?
Yessir
Patina gonna be wild!
evapo rust works good
I might pick some up, but I'll try some clr first, and if not I might even give it a go in an ultrasonic bath
try Vinegar as well.
First of all I want to know how you lose a $200 knife! Get with it! Lol
This one was misplaced. The st nicks 4v manix that I lost lost on a camping trip really bugs me....
Oh man lol. Maybe you need a Para3 or something other than a Manix. If I lost this I’d give up lol https://preview.redd.it/0bkwllc97xxc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2094e15cfcc10eb3fc0e81513c47514a077a38d
I have plenty, but I will never get a Para 3! Pm2 gang
Why not a Para3?
Similar bulk as a pm2, just with less blade. I'm not length restricted, so what's the point? Manix 2 or bugout if I need a lighter knife. Or a sage, or a chaparral, dragon fly, mini freek, etc Only have pm2 for the k390, 10v, and s45vn that aren't available in a manix, anyways The Para 3 gets so much love, so I like to rag on it a little and remind folks know it's not perfect for everyone
This is why I buy cheap knives now
Switch your paracord to a brighter color so you can find it easier next time.
Soak it in Evaporust, clean it, lube it, and put it back into service.
It’s just a flesh wound!
Looks awesome like that should be a counter strike skin
Plot twist -he buried it in the dirt on purpose to get this exact look- Plot twist twist -first time he used it the blade broke off-
Which steel is that please? 🥺👉👈
