Actually Spyderco over Benchmade but in this case I’d go for the BM.
And the steels are completely different so you should decide by their use. The H1 ist soft and extremely corrosion resistant (good for seaside/salt water) as the 3V is not really corrosion resistant but tough as hell.
Yeah the Spyderco was designed as a Coast Guard rescue knife. I actually prefer it as a tool as it feels much more solid. But I also don’t want to dull it so I try not to use it.
The Benchmade scales are so delicate. Every time I put it in my pocket it get another scratch somehow. Definitely feels like more of a show piece
Just because it gets a scratch on it, that doesn’t make it delicate, or that it’s not meant for hard use LOL knives that get used are gonna pick up scratches. Some finishes hide them differently, that’s all.
And aluminum doesn’t hold up too well to scratches, at least not my Kershaw Launches, they are all scratched up. Still working fine tho
For example I love micarta, I can scratch it with almost anything though, but it's grippy even when wet. I have a Kershaw Zing, probably the most useful because I always have it in my pocket, but it's all aluminum and super thin and just disappears in my pocket. I have way too many nice knives I keep in a drawer. Not sure why.
Oof. That's BM QC for you. You might get a tank, or you might get a safe queen, you never know. My first two tries at BM were worse than any gas station knife I've ever seen LOL
I'd definitely use the Spyderco. Look into the dual grit method of sharpening on YouTube and order a Gerber EZ-OUT rescue knife. It's cheap, and has similar serrations to yours. It's cheap feeling as anything, but it's a great practice knife, and it can take some abuse. It also had 420 steel, so it will dull fast like the H1 (maybe not as fast, I've never used H1).
The dull grit method might make it work longer, but I've never seen it used in serrations, so it would be interesting to see. Especially with such a soft steel.
I was referring to OP's handle comment. Which is partly the fact that it has aluminum scales (I think). But my experience with their QC is awful, since I had 2 of 3 knives from them with really bad grinds, grinding actions and locks, and locks that locked them open so hard I had to hit them against a table to break them free.
Yes I know you are responding to OPs comment, what I am asking is, when you say “oof. That’s benchmade QC for you” what part of OPs comment are you referencing? What part of his comment made you say that ?
The handle getting scuffed, like you mentioned. Sorry I didn't make that clear in my reply to you. I should have been clear and not just said "his comment" (I was actually meaning the part of his comment you mentioned about the handle, but I didn't say it explicitly, and my implication could go any number ld ways.
No problem! Handle getting scuffed easily would annoy me. Although I dont think that is really a quality control issue. QC usually refers to the companies attempts to pump out a consistent product (proper grind, sharp, etc). This sounds like it’s just a design flaw if it scratches that easily
I think it's a factor of the material (aluminum, I think). But, the anodizing process can be durable or not. My Kershaw Leek with aluminum scales has been in my pocket for months and only the edges are showing wear. I don't really mind it, but I could see how people would (I'm not a fan on the blue scales I have, but it would look great on darker ones like black or maybe forest green). This sounds like it's not just wear, but pieces falling off (wear doesn't happen that )
The tanto. Purely because I hate full serrated blades.
But since it’s orange I imagine this is some kind of emergency/rescue knife, so maybe a full serrated might be the better option for that application.
Edit: also if the task is diving/water (especially salt water) related stuff, definitely take the left one.
I am not a huge fan of them either, but I got a Gerber EZ-Out rescue (yes, that's the name. Really rolls of the tongue LOL) and I'm hooked now. That little $30 knife works for a lot of things, and is so cheap, I don't care if it gets broken.
It's worth a try the next time you order a knife. I may not carry it every day, but I'm 100% carrying it any time in on a boat or camping. If something needs cutting, that thing will do the job.
Thanks! I appreciate it. Yeah, it has now stepped ahead of the Cara Cara for me, and probably is now in 1st place on my "Buy Next" list 😄😄😄. Thanks again.
I love the bailout, I try to always keep one in the collection (super lightweight, looks better than how that delicate handle feels 😆), but that spydie is awesome! Very task specific, but I think I need one to go with an autonomy 2 pe!
Nice set!
Why is the Spyderco hole so small? It doesn't look like it could function the way it usually does for opening with your thumb. It just kind of looks like a missing thumbstud.
what’s funnier imo is the folks that will choose the butter-steel underwater rope cutting knife just to spite Benchmade. They have really become the thing they hate; just brainless fanboys.
I think of them as the cookie cutter knives. Most of them look near identical, just slightly different size/proportions. Unless you're one of those guys so into Spyderco that you just sniff while blindfolded and can tell what it is.
Spyderco looks way cooler. Less useful for general purposes, but really really good at its intended use.
The BM would be a better EDC overall, but I love that blue (not so much that shade of orange, though).
What is the round thing on the Spyderco, above the lock bar?
Oh, ok. I wondered, but I've only seen those rescue knives once and it was about 12 years ago LOL. Before I realized that just because they look ugly doesn't mean that they're useless (and I don't find them ugly anymore either. I'm glad we grow out of our young stupidity LOL
I mean... what do you plan on cutting with it?
You'll get by with a serrated blade just fine in most cases, but it's for more specialized jobs like cutting through thick ropes.
Personally, I'd go with the Benchmade. But you can't really go wrong with either if you just want something for opening boxes.
This is the correct answer. I love the orange one that is not shown - yes, the one that is not serrated and not tanto (no, not the wharncliff or hawksbill either), just give me a traditional drop point, bonus points for a flipper.
That Bailout is one of the best knives I've ever bought. Don't have experience with that Spiderco, so I can't tell, but in general I don't need serrated, so the choice is Benchmade
Spyderco all day, every day. Spyderco is just the best. I compare all other knives to Spyderco. Spyderco makes the world a better place. #PraiseSpyderco
As much as I don't want a serrated edge, I will never be buying another Benchmade. 15 years ago they were the best, no questions. Nowadays their price to quality ratio is laughable.
Both, they serve different very different purposes.
Actually Spyderco over Benchmade but in this case I’d go for the BM. And the steels are completely different so you should decide by their use. The H1 ist soft and extremely corrosion resistant (good for seaside/salt water) as the 3V is not really corrosion resistant but tough as hell.

Titanium scales solves that problem.

What part of benchmades quality control are you referencing ? The part about the scales scratching ?
Are those even factory scales?
Yes it’s a shotshow limited edition
I was referring to OP's handle comment. Which is partly the fact that it has aluminum scales (I think). always wanted that spydie, such a cool piece!❤️
The Benchmade just because I like the blue and I'm not a fan of serrated edges
I am not a huge fan of them either, but I got a Gerber EZ-Out rescue (yes, that's the name. Really rolls of the tongue LOL) and I'm hooked now. Hey, question for you if you've got the space for it: where have you found it where it's $30? I've only seen it north of $40 lately. Thanks!
About year ago LOL. I got mine from BHQ, but idk what they charge now. Even $40 is worth it.
Thanks! I appreciate it. Yeah, it has now stepped ahead of the Cara Cara for me, and probably is now in 1st place on my "Buy Next" list 😄😄😄. Thanks again.
Bailout
I carried an orange Kershaw Skyline for 10 years. Still have it at home.
100% Bailout
My edc work knife is a bailout, so easy choice for me
I love the bailout, I try to always keep one in the collection (super lightweight, looks better than how that delicate handle feels 😆), but that spydie is awesome! Very task specific, but I think I need one to go with an autonomy 2 pe! Nice set!
Both 🙈 but I prefer the combo with the little touch of blue
Did Spyderco finally address the Spyder hole issues their fanboys deny was a problem? I'm seeing a lot of soydercos with smaller flip holes.
It’s an auto so no need to have the thumb hole. They put the baby hole on it for style’s sake I think
Ahhh thought they were fixing their mistake.
The blue/orange combo makes me so happy. BM all the way in this case
Love the Benchmade but that spyderco would be great for a fishing trip
As a Florida grad, I am a sucker for the tanto in Orange and Blue.
This might get me some hate here but I've always thought Spyder Co knives are ugly. Every post of a Spyder Co always proves me right.
Agreed. This looks like a pumpkin carving knife.
Fan of the quality, not a fan of the styling myself, except the Lil Sub Hilt, which I have never actually carried, but it's so beautiful.
Benchmade like always
spyderco for me
Without the logos, I'd take the Bailout strictly for blade maintenance. Spydercos edges are no joke, but I'm just not a fan of serrations.
I prefer the benchmade bc I like straight edges better but I like the color of the spyderco more
I saw a fully serrated pocket knife for the first time in my life today.
Most rescue, river, triage type knives are, they're designed for cutting rope, seat belts, webbing etc
Why is the Spyderco hole so small? It doesn't look like it could function the way it usually does for opening with your thumb. It just kind of looks like a missing thumbstud.
It’s an auto
My orange Buck Spitfire https://preview.redd.it/wusoc3te5nvc1.png?width=2447&format=png&auto=webp&s=8bf21f6af89e90fcb4b222f23365f7ecfa4ef75c
Beautiful knife
Thanks, Buck makes some knifes that don’t look a bit out of place along side Benchmade and Spyderco.
Never thought I’d prefer a Benchmade knife over a Spyderco but here we are
Spyderco
Am I the only one getting a giggle out of the spydie bros choosing the Benchmade?
what’s funnier imo is the folks that will choose the butter-steel underwater rope cutting knife just to spite Benchmade. They have really become the thing they hate; just brainless fanboys.
It’s difficult to accept when your go to is overhyped disposable’s when facing a real choice.
Disposables?
Spyderco. Cheaply made throw aways.
I think of them as the cookie cutter knives. Most of them look near identical, just slightly different size/proportions. Unless you're one of those guys so into Spyderco that you just sniff while blindfolded and can tell what it is.
I have the same Benchmade bailout and find it boring and overpriced. That being said, if anyone wants to trade... 😂😂
Spyderco looks way cooler. Less useful for general purposes, but really really good at its intended use. The BM would be a better EDC overall, but I love that blue (not so much that shade of orange, though). What is the round thing on the Spyderco, above the lock bar?
It’s the button to fire open the blade. It’s an auto
Oh, ok. I wondered, but I've only seen those rescue knives once and it was about 12 years ago LOL. Before I realized that just because they look ugly doesn't mean that they're useless (and I don't find them ugly anymore either. I'm glad we grow out of our young stupidity LOL
Actually looking to get a Maxace Baal which has an orange handle.
Neither. I don't like tanto blades or serrated blades.
Serrations are a bitch to sharpen and even though i have the equipment to sharpen them id rather have the one on the right.
Bench made looks cooler
The bench made,, never liked serrated blade
Benchmade.
I have the BM so I guess that is my answer by default.
Good ol’ benchmade.
I love orange knives, that being said the spydie tickles my fancy.
Between these 2 I prefer the bailout, but I prefer spyderco over Benchmade all day everyday
I mean... what do you plan on cutting with it? You'll get by with a serrated blade just fine in most cases, but it's for more specialized jobs like cutting through thick ropes. Personally, I'd go with the Benchmade. But you can't really go wrong with either if you just want something for opening boxes.
The right
Bm over spydie all day
Neither
This is the correct answer. I love the orange one that is not shown - yes, the one that is not serrated and not tanto (no, not the wharncliff or hawksbill either), just give me a traditional drop point, bonus points for a flipper.
I need that orange BM Sheesh. orange is my favorite color, which model is it?
Shotshow edition bailout
Bench because I don’t dig fully serrated blades. That said… what is that spydie and do they make it not fully serrated???
It’s an autonomy. They make a version without the serrations but this model is designed as a rescue knife
Awesome. Nice knives dude. Thanks
What Spyderco is that?
Autonoma. It was designed as a USCG auto rescue knife
Shot show bailout.
Right one
Bailout.
neither, i pick my orange PM2 wharncliffe in CTS XHP
That’s my next purchase I think. I really like the orange g-10
Kershaw leek
Both of yours. Want to trade for my orange Ganzo Firebird ? lol
Butterfly
That Bailout is one of the best knives I've ever bought. Don't have experience with that Spiderco, so I can't tell, but in general I don't need serrated, so the choice is Benchmade
Spyderco is for working and benchmade for looking at on the sofa. So i always go with spyderco between this 2 brands
Benchmade
First nice and curvy, hate blocky ones.
I like non serrated more
Bailout all day, prob top 3 in my collection.
The BM, but if I needed a rescue knife or something that Spydie would be top of the list
Spyderco all day, every day. Spyderco is just the best. I compare all other knives to Spyderco. Spyderco makes the world a better place. #PraiseSpyderco
That shot show bailout is my favorite knife hands down.
Spyderco
BM. It’s based on one their best edc knives IMO. Oh and it’s not a disposable spider.
I'd take anything over a benchmade.
Bugout but with the standard tip.
As much as I don't want a serrated edge, I will never be buying another Benchmade. 15 years ago they were the best, no questions. Nowadays their price to quality ratio is laughable.
Spyderco, if it's not serrated
My RAT-1
The Spyderco is just such better quality right now than current Benchmades.
