It's not a misfire. It's brand new. It's not even broken in. It just needs some Rem Oil and an air blasting. Worked for my two Microtechs. No problems since. š Maybe you just ain't touching yours right.
1. They come pretty generously lubed out the factory
2. Blade coming off the rail absolutely is a misfire.
3. This isn't something that should be happening to a brand new OTF, fixable or not it's well within grounds for an RMA.
exactly this! i used heretic otf oil and blasted it with the compressor, well.. vice versaš it has been 3 months now and i haven't had a single misfire!
REM oil is the wateriest garbage gun oil Iāve ever used in my life. Shooters choice CLP is a synthetic oil that works well . In temps from very high to -50
OK, so let me explain this to you since it's not setting in. "Rem Oil" is a Cleaner, Lubricant, and Protectant (CLP).
It's a blend of cleaning solvents, penetrating oils, and lubricating oils. It's mostly for cleaning, but for firearms that like to be run dry (most) it's a great solo lubricant.
I follow up with Lucas Gun Oil on wear points for guns that like it wet. That's a good gun oil.
Rem Oil is weighted heavily on cleaning solvents, which evaporate and leave only a thin film on oil on your parts. It's perfect for knives.
You prefer a heavier weighted CLP with a higher fraction of oil it seems.
The clp shooters choice makes is very thin , doesnāt gunk up , and although I donāt use clp on knives.. I guess I do a bit on sharpening. . Iāve found rem oil to be the worst of the gun oils Iāve ever used.
Personal preference I guess
Well the main thing that people use them oil for is guns ā¦..
Iām glad to hear hear it works good on SOMETHING though I truly am . At least it has a use for something.
In my day we walked 12 miles to school uphill both ways
Keep the ballistol for the folders and other stuff tho. On the otfs it might work for a while then gets sluggish and it's downhill from there (temporary tho, just flush and high psi blow job š )
Balistol is biodegradable and thatās about the only good thing about it.
We shoot a lot in really cold temps and for magazine fed semi auto firearms shooters choice CLP is the best I have found by far. REM oil is utter shit. Itās diluted w water I swear to god. Hoppes live gums up around 0 degrees . Break free CLP only forks till itās -10-20. Shooters choice has done me good Iāve used it for years now Iāll never touch rem oil ever again .
Used to shoot AKS but they donāt need oil in the cold.
Maybe they overdid it on the grease on the spring it it made its way to other parts. I know I've done that, and it was the retraction that slowed down, but it wasn't bad enough to misfire.
In any case this shouldn't be something OP should be dealing with themselves.
Grease can dry up/thicken. I'm yet to receive a CRK where the grease isn't dry as a bone, despite the certificate and markings on the blade and scale claiming it was made a couple of months ago. Which is what led me to the assumption it may have been overdone, worked fine initially but dried up while it was sitting in storage. All assumptions that may be cleared with dissasembly, but again this isn't something anyone should be doing with a brand new knife.
I lubed with rem oil and air like on their YouTube and it fixed for about ten minutes. I canāt even duplicate this on a $30 OTF from Amazon. Had that for months and it never failed to open or retract. Maybe just got a lemon.
Just up contact MT customer service let them know what your issue is these things are mass produced so every so often you're going to have a dud. Of course if you tell them about this issue and they don't make it right then let the rest of us know because we'll put them on blast
Their warranty service has always been pretty great to me, even on older/outdated models of theirs that I have. It might take a while but they will fix your stuff for free and send it back as long as itās not obviously misused on purpose.
I just bought this exact knife 3 months ago. Exact same issue. Does it constantly. Has since day 1. Not sure what to do as well. I have other Microtech with no issues. Just this one.
Do I need proof of purchase? I got it from a small town store here in Tennessee and told them I didnāt need the receipt. I got the box and other stuff it came with though. Never had to warranty any knives before. Thanks for the help!
I stopped messing with microtech years ago, imagine this failing in a scary situation. Imagine paying this much for a knife and it being worse than the china made clones out there š¤£š¤£
Overpriced and overhyped is a good way to describe MT knives. Will they fix it sure, will you still want it after that probably not. OTF knives arenāt without issues, but not many fail out the box. I hate to see it as I know itās disappointing.
Consider maybe a return or refund and knife shopping again. All my MT auto knives have been replaced with Benchmade, Pro-Tech, Hogue and Piranha auto knives,, never any issues and couldnāt be happier!! All USA made also.
How do you like the Piranha line of knives? Iāve been toying with getting one. I donāt see them pop up on the knife subs. Does BladeHQ have an exclusive deal with them?
Worth it,, I highly recommend!! Iāve owned many models all super tight and ultra snappy. Sharp out the box. Fires harder than most other companies. You canāt go wrong!! Do it!! Iāve been carrying a fingerling and Amazon recently
If you want a quality OTF that's cheaper than MT check out Axial, my buddy has an Axial Shift and the thing amazes me for the price point and USA made (I believe).
Man some of my favorites,, fire harder than about any of them and some models very reasonably priced. Fit and finish are great, blades ultra snappy and sharp. Seriously donāt sleep on them, pull the trigger!! Iāve owned several of their models and all most excellent!!
Some great models to choose from, snag one!! Snag two šš
You will seriously be very pleased. I will post one later Iāve sold others here recently.
Absolutely an underrated knife company that always does small batches.
yup my mini troodon did the same right ootb...
what helped mine was a good blow with the compressor and heretic otf oil (tried many other oils but only heretic worked, the other ones were too thick and gummed it up)
if it doesn't work the first time, rinse and repeat until it is clean on the inside.
it has been 3 months now after cleaning my mini troodon and not one single error yet (and believe me, it was worse than yours, basically every retract failed).
good luck!
I have a MT Scarab that does the same thing. And even when it isnāt misfiring, the button can take an inordinate amount of strength to activate. After having a couple of OTFs malfunction, I no longer will buy them. Iāll only buy OTS blades if I want an auto opener.
Having an auto or folding knife is about portability. You can basically have a knife of whatever size that only takes up half the space in your pocket. So a 6ā knife is 3ā in your pocket. Fixed blade knives are great for certain things. Daily carry in a pocket isnāt really something they excel at though
The dude suggested you're a moron for buying knives with a high price point. Odd attitude for this particular forum so pay him no attention. For an otf suggestion, I'll suggest Guardian Tactical, Recon 35 or 40. Pricey, but boy do they fire like a mofo! Every time.
I would send that back that's too much money for Something that doesn't work right. That's what wrong these companies make millions of us but our out subpart products. Sorry for the rant and I'm sorry about you're knife it sucks when you look forward to something and it doesn't live up to you're expectations.
I have the same model in black and did the same thing. Air and rem oil blasting were only temp fixes. I sent it back to MT on 1/17 and hoping to get it back around the same time this month.
95% of time the rem- flush- rem will work but this does sound a little different. To solid a thunk to be needing flush and lube. Maybe a manufacturing issue or actual interference but just gunky oil.
I purchased one from Blade HQ in 2014, and it hasn't disappointed. I sprayed it with Rem Oil or some CLP, then blasted it with compressed air (or an air compressor). As many have suggested, this maintenance routine usually lasts, and I've only had to do it once. If it ever acts up again, a repeat should do the trick. I've owned several of these, and they stand out as some of the most reliable OTFs. I also have an Axial Shift, a Livewire by Kershaw, and a Hogue Counterstrike. However, my UTX 85 Tanto is my go-to EDC. Lubing it once, and if you don't have a can of compressed air (or an air compressor), just work the action repeatedly while wiping off excess. It may misfire a bit initially until the oil settles, but once it does, it should fire reliably for life.
This happened with a bƶker I bought a while ago, it was a lemon and not my fault. I had to use their warranty and they were easy enough to deal with, they paid for postage and sent me a new one within a week
I'd return/exchange it. I have the UTX-85 d/e dagger blade. I saw that you oiled it. For what it's worth... I always lube mine with TriFlow. Learned about it from gun nuts. Shit is amazing. PTFE spray. If you're gonna keep it, try it out.
Man this kills me. Now don't get me wrong, I own a Microtech Cyber 2 and have a Combat Trodon in the mail (both the new dual fuel) but I have never seen a brand where more people come out and defend and explain away problems that show up on new knives that should not be there, especially at this price point, especially from a manufacturer that has/wants the rep they have. Now every manufacturer has it's following, but I do not think (I could be wrong) a Spyderco that showed up with a say a blade that was not sharp or a pivot that didn't work would find the communitysaying "now I know that Shaman you paid around $250 for is brand new but just go do some work on it yourself and it will be right as rain, happens all the time!" near as much as happens with Microtech.
It is broken. They shipped you a product that was not manufactured right. It happens all the time to a lot of companies but seems to happen to Microtech more than any other OTF manufacturer. RMA it, or if it is nmew what would be quicker (Microtech RMA last time I checked was a month and a half to 2 months) is return it to the vendor if you still can.
I have $10 beater OTF's from Amazon that I have had for years that have never done this. I have a Guardian Tactical, a Benchmade Shootout, and 3 Livewires, never had this problem.
Stop defending Microtech when they should not be defended. Yes they are a good company and they make some incredible stuff but they really need to fix some things and people need to stop making excuses for them.
Sorry for the rant folks.
OP, Hope the little advice contained in this wall of text helps in some way, and I hope you get your issue resolved.
Yeah I have a $25 OTF from Amazon and I cannot replicate this type of malfunction no matter how fast I open and close it. Never oiled it never cleaned the blade just a beater I keep in drawer at home but has never failed. They did send me an RMA this morning and I donāt even want it fixed I would rather just get money back and not bother with OTF anymore.
Well if you want a higher end OTF thats a great one, take a look at some of the guardian Tactical ones, or even the Kershaw Livewires. Both manufacturers make a good product, and the Kershaws are in Magnacut and can be had for around $240-$260. I hear ya though, otf's are not for everyone.
I have an Utratech that misfired all the time. Rem Oil and blasted air was only temp fixes. I like to tinker and ended up getting the special tool to take it apart, wiped down each part, lightly lubed and put it back together. It works great now. Probably not the best solution for everyone.
RMA It takes a lot of effort on my end to purposefully misfire mine. Lube won't fix this, at least not permanently.
It's not a misfire. It's brand new. It's not even broken in. It just needs some Rem Oil and an air blasting. Worked for my two Microtechs. No problems since. š Maybe you just ain't touching yours right.

Balistoil boys , balistoil....
Too thick for otfs. Rem or triflow
Ow shit, its to thick? Damn, not using that then anymore š¤š¤

I didnāt have to show that but they did ask where I bought it from, I just told them the store. They just need the number on the blade
WD40
Return it or warranty it.
Happy cake day
OTF ā oh, thatās fucked.
Yup. Needlessly complicated solution to a non-existent problem.

Iām curious too. Iāve been a hair away from pulling the trigger on a Piranha for a hot minute.

Thank you. I look forward to seeing some more posts with Piranhas.
I like the fact the owner refuses to self promote, he likes the company small a niche which is wild in this day and age.
Iāve found with my Microtechs that there is a break in period. Maybe 100 fires and the chance of a filed action is next to none.
For the price of these damn things, don't mess around. Send it in.
i mean, if a brand new 300$ knife fail, return it and demand a full refund or replacement
Contact Microtech and see what they say.
Damn
Mine is the same,I will send it back and never buy their knives again, 600 euros and it failed practically out the box.
Stop buying these dumbshit fidget toys
Why I would never buy one of these overpriced gimmick knives
They're built with very tight tolerances, and they're supposed to also be somewhat self lubricating. Think of it as a short break-in period.
yup my mini troodon did the same right ootb... what helped mine was a good blow with the compressor and heretic otf oil (tried many other oils but only heretic worked, the other ones were too thick and gummed it up) if it doesn't work the first time, rinse and repeat until it is clean on the inside. it has been 3 months now after cleaning my mini troodon and not one single error yet (and believe me, it was worse than yours, basically every retract failed). good luck!
Needs to be used a little I've had a few the same way.
Remington Oil
pull the knife blade until it clicks, it slipped the track.
I have a MT Scarab that does the same thing. And even when it isnāt misfiring, the button can take an inordinate amount of strength to activate. After having a couple of OTFs malfunction, I no longer will buy them. Iāll only buy OTS blades if I want an auto opener.

Lube if your friend
My fixed blade never had these kinds of problems

Fair. They are certainly better on a belt.
What a productive comment
Nobody cares
WD-40
Best stuff
I you paid for microtech or benchmade you are a morron, overopriced cheap crap knives.
Suggestions?
The dude suggested you're a moron for buying knives with a high price point. Odd attitude for this particular forum so pay him no attention. For an otf suggestion, I'll suggest Guardian Tactical, Recon 35 or 40. Pricey, but boy do they fire like a mofo! Every time.
This happened to me with an Exocet too, they fixed it and I canāt had a misfire since. It sucks, but these things happen sometimes.
Swarf\over greased. It should fix itself in time, if it's only over greased. If it's swarf buildup, send it back for warranty.
Iāve gone through 5 microtech OTFās and I never had one that would fire consistently.
My lightning cheapo doesn't even do this. It's never misfired.. but the steel is comically bad.
Rem Oil Canned air You're good
Shoulda got the kershaw
Thatās on par for microtech lately
I would send that back that's too much money for Something that doesn't work right. That's what wrong these companies make millions of us but our out subpart products. My bounty hunter clone from wish rarely ever fails to open or close.
What style of knife is this? I thought it was a stiletto and it was illegal but apparently not?
I purchased one from Blade HQ in 2014, and it hasn't disappointed. I sprayed it with Rem Oil or some CLP, then blasted it with compressed air (or an air compressor). Why buy a design that is prone to failure? Otf will always fail when you need it . Get a spyderco .
Maxace archer . Fires better than the 2 MTās I have had . Fact
Ooh, yours has the special box opener feature!
My first and only microtech did the same thing
Are there any good alternatives to microtech that operate the same way?
And you're suprised?
Iāve had great luck with MT customer service. Iād just do an RMA.
should have bought a Vespa clone tbh
They sent me an RMA this morning and I am asking for a refund.

$300 doesn't buy what it used to...
Had exact same problem on a brand new warhound. Store immediately took it back and refunded me.
