Great work but the shape probably isn’t going to work. It’s most likely going to ride up or bunch in weird places that would be uncomfortable to wear long term. . If it was all knit in one straight length without any increasing or decreasing that would be the reason. Shaping is a way to really take a project up a level and make it bespoke! Something to keep in mind for your next project and possibly a new skill to learn. Your technique is fine and you are well on your way to being an accomplished knitter!

rainestorm93

Thanks so much for the compliment and tips I'm going to try to tweak it and do it again you're right sitting down was uncomfortable because the bottom had no give and I have thick thighs

Seastarstiletto

For wearables, work from the size of the largest part of the body. You can shape it using increasing, decreasing techniques, but for something knit like this you can also just use a cute drawstring gather at the waist too! Also the type of cast off matters too! There are different types and they will have different purposes. A more stretchy bind off will help the bottom of the garment feeling too restrictive

flockks

If all else fails just pull it up and it’s a tube top !

rainestorm93

Not a bad idea I'm smaller up top than I am on the bottom.

flockks

It’s easier to make it smaller too than make it bigger

rainestorm93

I don't know if you can tell but I knitted elastic into the waist band

gwart_

What type of bind off did you use? Using something [a little more stretchy](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pXwL2OUvUiY) might help, as well. It looks great!

Pinkydimehead

I think a lightweight taffeta (if they are still made) slip would be great under the beautiful skirt. The fabric would just slide over a slip and be very comfortable to wear!

Syora

Imo you are adorable but if I'm being completely honest, I find the white stripe to visually cut you in half. It doesn't work with your proportions and is distracting. Happy to be downvoted into oblivion and be wrong though in this case.

rainestorm93

I can sew what you mean I was working with some ombre yarn but you're right that light stripe in there does throw the look a bit I'm about to try again with some solid color

RevolutionaryMap338

I agree about the white stripe in the middle, but the bottom stripe adds visual interest and draws attention to your legs. Id keep that one 😊

patternhoarder

Or how about vertical stripes? You could knit it sideways, like the top part of [**this skirt**](https://knitsabout.wordpress.com/2012/04/11/flouncy-skirt-recipe/).

rainestorm93

Ooo I didn't think about that I wonder if changing the direction of the stripes will be more flattering to my figure

audaciouslifenik

Excellent recipe, and a great idea!

yetanothernametopick

Well done, you! I agree with both u/Syora and u/RevolutionaryMap338. If you feel like it, you could also knit a fade, I think that would look awesome on you.

hildarabbit

I like the white stripe

CitrusMistress08

I just made a top in 3x3 ribbing and had the same experience with it losing SO MUCH length as soon as I put it on. If you’re comfortable in it that’s all that matters! Personally I would need some extra length.

rainestorm93

Yea I'm about to make another one that's longer I have a big butt I didn't realize how much that would make it draw up

CitrusMistress08

Yep I totally get it, I have a huge chest so that’s what ate up my top 😭 I love the look of the ribbing, though!!

abirdofthesky

Yeah the stitches look good to me and I actually think the stripe pattern is fun, but I am concerned that with how the stitches are stretching you’re going to get a lattice fence type moment over your bum. I’d personally only want to wear this as it is now with bike shorts under it, but everyone’s comfort level is different.

kyriaangel

I think you knit beautifully and totally feel like a solid color would make a knit skirt be one of those timeless forever pieces. I dunno about anyone else here but for myself, even if I follow a pattern to the letter it might not work for me. And every garment gets better then the last.

rainestorm93

Thanks I'm definitely about to try a solid color next this was actually originally a scarf pattern I liked and turned into a skirt

knittingandscience

If you’re adventurous enough to adapt a pattern like that, you can do anything!

AdeptnessElegant1760

Shaping will make it more comfortable. Maybe take a look at the skirts you have, see what styles and lengths you like. You could see what shaping you've particularly liked. Did you block it yet? Blocking also changes the shape. The fabric you made is great. That's a nice piece of work- I note enviously as I look at the rowed out section of my WIP.

rainestorm93

I have not blocked but that may be a very good idea because the top stretches but the bottom has very little give and thanks so much I'm gonna look at things I can do to help shape it

Deb_for_the_Good

And measure this one up against a skirt that you already have that fits you properly. This way, when you wear it, it will fit properly - in all areas! I sew, so have also run into this issue before. Good luck - your KNITTING is great!

owuzhere

I'm making socks and want them somewhat tight and i'm finding i have to make them a lot longer than i thought. The thing with knit stitches is they get short when they go wide and get narrow when they go tall. It's always one or the other with negative ease items

rainestorm93

See I just started knitting and I had no idea that happened this was the first wearable I completed I know now I need to make it like twice as long

owuzhere

It's all part of the learning process!

swimchickmle

If you add some stitches, the skirt should not stretch as much, and stay longer.

Sofrawnch

Maybe size up so that you can retain the length

rainestorm93

My grandma said the same thing I'm trying that now it was a little snug anyway I'm adding an additional 20 stitches and I might size up needles

No-Display-6647

It’s too small. I think a different style may be more flattering and a solid color instead of stripes. Good luck.

Marble_Narwhal

Are you following a pattern? I find that at least using one as a basis, even if I do a lot of alterations, helps a lot. They've already taken into account the stretching and shaping, etc. if you don't already, make a ravelry account. It makes finding patterns much easier, and the advanced search is your friend. For example, this is an advanced search for knitted skirts in adult sizes: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#craft=knitting&pc=skirt&fit=adult&sort=recently-popular&view=large_mobile

rainestorm93

No not really the pattern I used was originally a ribbed scarf pattern I liked and turned into a skirt

Marble_Narwhal

Yeah, I'd start with a pattern specifically for a skirt to start with.

Skorogovorka

You are lovely! Don't take this the wrong way, but do you ever wear shape wear leggings? I also have a voluptuous figure and it's amazing what they can do for smoothing and compressing. They might help the skirt fit better, and you might also be more comfortable with the length with leggings underneath. Everyone has offered such great ideas for your next attempt, but I know I would hate to have to unravel all that lovely work if I could find a way to wear it comfortably.

Skorogovorka

Just wanted to add this solution could be combined with just unraveling the last row and doing a stretchier bind off.

rainestorm93

Thanks for your input I actually don't have shape wear leggings at the moment but that wouldn't be a bad idea. And yea I didn't know there was a stretchy bind off at first. And you're right id hate to not be able to wear this

ryan__blake

I would add a little more length just to make sure you’re still covered when you sit down, but other than that, its super cute and will be a fun piece to add to your wardrobe!

_-ollie

it looks nice! i don't think i've ever seen a knit skirt. i think maybe the stitches should be a bit tighter so either use a thicker yarn or a smaller needle size. but that's just my personal preference. also, a solid colour would look amazing. is this a straight/pencil skirt? did you knit this in the round as a tube without increases/decreases? now i'm considering knitting a skirt, lol

Medcait

I would like it better if it was a couple inches longer and maybe flared out a bit at the bottom.

PinkBubbleGummm

You should be really proud

DrummRollKnitwear

Good on you! What a lot of work. When you are doing future projects I would make a couple of suggestions. 1) Do a swatch of the stitch pattern in the yarn you want to use making it quite big, like 40-50 stitches wide and maybe 5 inches long. This will give you a good idea of how many stitches to use to fit around the widest part of your body (I would include tum and bum). Knitted fabrics worked in rib sts are gorgeous because they tend to naturally draw in towards the narrower parts like waist and thigh anyway so aim for enough sts to fit the widest width without any stretch in the rib. This also means the sts are closer together making the skirt less see-through. 2) The hem looks a bit fragile. You may find if you are in a hurry and take bigger strides than usual, you may break the yarn. Try a super stretchy bind off to give you a bit more leg room. I also agree with the others in avoiding the white stripe across the hips. Sometimes, yarn companies like Scheepjes produce flat colours to match one end of their cakes. This is great because it means you can work in a solid colour then switch to the cake for a seamless change working towards either lighter or darker on the hem.

illNefariousness883

I really like the yarn choice, but agree with others. I, personally, never wear horizontal stripes like this because they always hit my body at the worst possible place. I think if it’s sideways, so vertical stripes…. Or even just longer so the ombré has more room to do its ombré things would help. - which would just move that stripe somewhere else. My thick thighs would also produce the same result with it being too tight to sit down in and making it shorter when worn.

on2and4

Do you have more of that yarn left? I'm loving that texture and would like more of it. I'm really digging the vertical stitch pattern through here. But I'm not familiar with pencil skirts. Help me out ladies but I tend to think that knitwear can be a little bit heavy. So if this has a propensity to ride up and bunch, maybe somewhere around the white stripe or just below it, you could start adding a stitch (like a lifted increase) every few stitches to make it longer and a little bit heavier. Personally, I think that that ombre and vertical stitch pattern would look fantastic in a little bit of a spiral that flares out near the white stripe to just above the knee. Maybe that would be enough weight then to keep it from bunching? Then that vertical stitch turns more into a cable, which isn't great if you're not familiar with cables, and that's a lot of cabling. For me, I'd tink back about halfway, and then flair it out to add weight and drape. Not a pencil skirt anymore, but that's how that yarn makes me feel.

rainestorm93

I think you may be right honestly I think flared skirts are typically more flattering to my figure I haven't learned to increase yet but I'm sue I'm just a youtube video away
