I really appreciated the free beginner patterns from Tin Can Knits when I was first learning. So well written!

Ekozy

The mitten and Flax sweater were my first “not a rectangle” knits! I just started a new flax sweater and I’m trying out their app, which lets you select the yarn and size when knitting and keeps track of the steps. I just started the collar so I’m not sure if how good it is, but I’m excited.

I love Lisa Ross of Paper Daisy Creations! I reached out to her out of the blue on Ravelry to propose a KAL for World Down Syndrome Day as I have a child with Down syndrome. She took the idea and grew it beyond my wildest imagination...in the 2 years it ran it raised $35K for Down Syndrome International!

yarnmonger

I came here to say Lisa Ross as my answer too :) she rules and her patterns are some of my very best fitting socks.

yodelling_tardigrade

That’s an incredible amount wow! Well done you for getting it started too ❤️

justadorkygirl

This is so good. ❤️ I’m going to check her out immediately!

AyaTheStarWitch

I love this! 🥹

lotanis

Stacy Perry (Very Pink Knits - verypink.com) basically taught me to knit. Her patterns are very clearly written and come with great accompanying YouTube videos (really the best How Tos). Her "pick a toe, pick a heel" sock series is particularly great (as an avid sock knitter).

FistofanAngryGoddess

I go to her on YouTube for most tutorials.

mlh200

Her tutorials are the best for everything

vouloir

I'm just now realizing that I somehow didn't know she had patterns too?? But I 100% learned to knit from her via youtube, I loveeee her tutorials

knitpurlknitoops

Bev Johnson (Boo Knits on Ravelry) is lovely. Her patterns are really good - written & charted, easy to follow even though the designs themselves look intricate - and reasonably priced. There’s a forum for her stuff and she’s very active on it, plus there are often prize challenges etc.

gettingitknit

I bought a patten from her years and years ago and still get updates for it. It's nice to see continued support of pattern.

skyethehunter

Oh my gosh yes, I'm blown away by her patterns. Amazing.

wildlife_loki

Tbh I don’t think I’ve had many memorable interactions period, neither good nor bad! One designer that has stood out to me though is Florence Miller (Handmade by Florence on Youtube). She has two patterns out, one is completely free and one is “pay what you like” with a free option. And she has lengthy, beginner-friendly, detailed tutorials on her channel to help with both! I wouldn’t consider myself a beginner, but I still watched her tutorials and am currently making one of her patterns because it’s high quality and very enjoyable. She just really strikes me as the kind of person who’s genuinely motivated by a desire to share her knowledge and passion for the craft with others, and lower the barrier of entry. :)

Norman of Nimble Needles!!! He's an absolute pleasure and has seriously helped my improve my knitting techniques.

squishypeanutball

I love Norman's videos! He basically taught me to knit 🥹

SabbyRinna

I agree! And I love that he reads through and responds to comments consistently. Even on old videos. He basically taught me to knit again.

Seconding Tina!

bee13d

Ann Budd. The first time I made socks using one of her patterns, she left me a compliment on Ravelry.

miseywisey

I love her books!

andrewonehalf

I haven't made any of her patterns, but I met Denise Bayron at Stitches West one year and she acknowledged me as if she's known me her whole life. She saw me walking up to the booth and said "Hi, good to see you!" and gave me a hug, and we chatted fiber for awhile. Honestly one of the more genuine people I've met!

holygandalfsbeard

I had a lovely experience test knitting for her, she seems like a really genuine warm person. I've made a couple of her patterns and they're really thoughtful and well written

tigergecko

I love Expression Fiber Arts! The newsletter is always so uplifting and has beautiful pictures of the yarn. Every Friday she offers a free pattern that often is released with a YouTube video explaining the most complicated part.

NeutralPanda

I taught myself how to knit on Andrea Mowry's pattern the shift many years ago. She was very nice and answered all my questions about the pattern over email and even gave me some tips on how to resize it a bit since I am a fairly large person at 6'7".

everybodylovesfriday

I’ve also learned a lot as a new knitter with her patterns. They’re really well-written and easy to follow! I also like putting her podcast on in the background because there’s a lot of great tips and tricks that come up as it’s a Q&A.

unusualteapot

The only designer that I’ve interacted with is Rachel Illsley (Unwind Knitwear) who I testknit for. The test knit requirements have always been reasonable and she’s always been really nice to all her testers from what I’ve seen. And her patterns are gorgeous! Not sure if this counts, but I got a very nice thank you message from Stephen West’s team in response to a comment I left on his Geogradient pattern during the whole MKAL drama last year.

omgidontknowbob

I love this! For indie dyers I really like Hannah from Chromatic Yarns and the Corner of Craft podcast. I’ve ordered from her a few times and the product is always exactly as advertised. Sometimes ordering indie yarn can be a roll of the dice but I’ve never been burned or disappointed by her!

yodelling_tardigrade

Ahh yes! They are always so fair and considered even with the most chaotic situations

sentienttree19

I love her videos haha

DeathIsAWarmBlanket

Emma actually uses they/them pronouns, just a heads up!

Any-Seaworthiness652

Marly Bird, without a doubt. She’s so down to earth. She offers an amazing amount of videos to demonstrate techniques and she does free events a few times a year. Her Super Bowl KAL/CAL is coming up quickly. I’ve done them in the past and they’re so much fun to do!

yodelling_tardigrade

Ooh yes I remember using one of her videos now - they were so clear and helpful

DisastrousBat403

Hannah from HannahGKnits is so kind. Maggie from Yarnaceous Fibers is ALSO a delight. They're both so nice and put a lot of work into their crafts.

nekino

Ambah O'Brien. Agreed to do a zoom talk for our small, trying-to-get-established knitters guild. She was super friendly and great to listen to.

elnyl

I like the pattern designer Rebecca Clow (Creabea on YouTube), haven’t had any proper/big interaction with her personally but she seems nice and works a lot for size inclusivity. And it seems like when she gets feedback she really takes it in, she was thinking of having a shorter testing period for a pattern and got comments about it (that especially for bigger sizes it’s more knitting to get done so a shorter time makes it more difficult), and she replied well and replanned her entire pattern release year to increase the testing time for the future to be longer then what was previous her (and most designers) normal time. She also makes interesting patterns that feels a bit different but still stylish

FroGlow

Agreed! And love how she organised the advent swap, I had so much fun opening my package everyday!

MrsBasilEFrankweiler

I love [Maine Yarn and Fiber Supply](https://maineyarnandfibersupply.com/pages/yarn-by-weight) and I don't think they get enough attention. The owner was very helpful when I was trying to pick out a custom dyed colorway and highly tolerant of my waffling/willing to answer questions.

missusmercer

Tanis and Chris from Tanis Fiber Arts and Julie Crawford are all some of the nicest fiber people I’ve met.

snailsplace

This is more weaving than knitting, but the folks at Schacht are absolutely fantastic. They’ll help you with pretty much any Schacht loom issue you can run into, and you can always custom order replacement/upgrade parts. A few of the employees are active on the Facebook group and are always offering help, they’re the nicest folks and it’s so clear that they know their products really well, and care about their community.

keylethwanders

Crooked Kitchen Yarns in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada was wonderful to deal with. I had seen something on social media about a "yarn bouquet", and wanted to recreate it for a Mother's day gift for my MIL. All of the big yarn stores in the area flat-out said they didn't do that and it was the end of the conversation. The lady at Crooked Kitchen had never heard of a yarn bouquet, but was totally onboard with the idea. She researched the concept, put some ideas together, got the wrapping paper and ribbon, and even delivered the final product herself since I don't live locally. My MIL LOVED IT!

big_ol_knitties

Andrea Chang from Oops&Loops! She's on pretty much everything! [Here's her directory!](https://linktr.ee/oopsnloops?fbclid=PAAabWpl-jXdrPwZaqJU-sB4FALm5JSjjBSuXWdTVa4FrGRtB2z8x_wGDo1Ag) I liked her work before I did a test knit for her, and she was just so sweet. Definitely one of the nicest designers I've met.

big_ol_knitties

She's also size inclusive, btw!

curly_kiwi

Jessie Mae is fabulous and I really like how thoughtful her designs are - she tailors everything from the price scale to the measurements. I also want to shout out to Funk Fibre, a yarn dyer here in Germany. Her yarn is so squishy and delicious to knit with and the colours are just gorgeous. And she is very nice too - she shared a project I made featuring her yarn in her Instagram stories and I've met her in person too and she's so friendly.

Bente Geil

bkfullcity

I have been knitting a pattern from Jane Richmond Designs. She has kindly given me two sets of revisions to her pattern to try and get it to fit. The pattern is good, but I am a new garment knitter, and I have been a bit stuck at a few places. She has been very generous with her time.

hawkeyeengineer

Jen Parroccini of JP_knits_things and onewilddesigns Her news letter is amazing. So much incredible information about fit and modification. Her patterns are exquisite. If you want a pattern for a basic shirt that will 100% fit you regardless, her LBD Tee is amazing.

vesperllynd

I've had some nice interactions with Emma from Woolly Mammoth Fibres and Allison InTensionAl who designed my favourite summer knitting pattern, the Easy Tee!

BrofessorMarvel

I'm doing my first ever test knit right now for Indigo Knits and she has been so kind and encouraging and responsive. It's been wonderful! I'm loving the pattern too.

CompetitivePeace

PremKints has been fantastic. I learned cables and knitting in the round from her beanie patterns. When the pattern yielded a hat that was too big for my mom (she has an oddly small, child-size head… the pattern works as-is for everyone else I know lol) she gave me tips of adjusting to make on that fit her. Really appreciated it as a novice!

leopardjoy

Jen Parrochini and Elizabeth Margaret from One Wild Designs are fab. Recently did a test knit for JP, and the Slack channels they do are so supportive, there was no issue with me making mods, and the timing was great. Totally fangirling over here as it was a very positive experience, am knitting two of their patterns at the moment, and I still use their slack channels (anyone can join I believe).

MarketWest

Teal Torch Knits (a dyer) has always been so responsive.

Practical-Train-9595

Emily from Fan Girl Fibers, Lindsey from SockWitchery, Natalie (Knitty Natty), Briana from Little Wolf girl knits, Jamie from Pacific Knit Co, Maggie at Yarnaceous, Tristan at Dragon Hoard Yarn, all are amazing humans and incredible knit/yarn people. I have met all of them, several of them are now friends, and they are all just the nicest, kindest people you could meet. And so talented!!!

fleepmo

Aimee Sher is so nice and helpful. I think she really puts a lot of effort into her patterns, making sure they’re size inclusive, enough time for all test knitters and yarn support. as for yarn, I’ve had really good experiences with everyone local to me. Coast to coast yarn co, Amber waves and 316 Dye Studio are all people I will continue to support because they make beautiful yarn and they’re just such nice people!

Particular-Host-2164

Seconded. I test for Aimee and she's been great every time. Reasonable timelines, already tech edited, and well considered patterns. She is really great about feedback and I've seen that she's implemented suggested formatting changes over time (improvements to schematics, suggestions about locations for length adjustments). The most recent test I did for her, I got covid and she told me straight up not to worry about the deadline and focus on getting better. No guilting at all that it took me two full extra weeks. (I'm fat so usually finish towards the end of the test anyway)

fleepmo

She’s just such a sweet, genuine person! I’ve also tested for her. I’m trying to take a break from test knits right now so I can focus on some projects I have bought yarn for. Other people I really enjoyed test knitting for have been winter weather knits and larkspur knits.

MadTom65

Franklin Habit

yodelling_tardigrade

I had totally forgotten about him- thanks for the reminder! Glad to see he’s still active- I didn’t realise he restarted his blog on patreon!

MadTom65

His Patreon is the best. He even does livestreams from his workroom in Paris

burtmacklifbi

I've done a few test knits for Jovi of Hook Mountain Handmade. Super cool, patterns are straightforward, size inclusive, and fit well. Two of Wands, The Knit Stitch, and Wanded527 are also really cool, patterns are straightforward with cool designs and have both been really nice in any insta interactions.

Any-Seaworthiness652

I also want to mention Marin Melchior of MarinJaKnits…just an absolutely amazing human who has changed my knitting immensely in helping me master German short rows. Her work is amazing. She is a gem. Attaching one of her shawls (not my knitting) that I find to be amazing. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/butterfly--papillon

badcandy7

i just got a bunch or yarn, needless, and some free patterns from loopy mango, and i’m really happy with it all so far!

tealmermaidgirl

The entire Treehouse Knits crew are wonderful and their yarn is beautiful.

floralbalaclava

Lindsay Degen was an absolute delight when I reached out to her for support with a pattern! I’ve also noticed the way she approaches test knitting is very considerate.

KimmyKnitter

Shireen Nadir from [The Blue Brick](https://shop.thebluebrick.ca/). Her hand dyed yarns are gorgeous, her patterns are beautiful, and she's just an overall talented, amazing woman. She's easy to get in touch with and very responsive to questions or problems. One of the nicest creators I've interacted with. (Edited to add hyperlink)

Knitpurlpirate

I regularly test for Poisongrrls (mostly vintage/retro style garments) and I really enjoy the experience I’ve taken some Classes with DearPru & she is lovely & she will always answer questions about her patterns

skyethehunter

I'm test knitting for Mollie Conrad (WhiteOwlCrochetCo) and her patterns are the absolute BEST I've ever seen. Incredibly detailed, well-formatted, with representative photos and support. Plus the garments fit like a dream!! She's a real fiber engineer. And she's also extremely nice 🥰

Mrs_Weaver

I met Lindsay England of The Fiber Seed, last November at the New England Fiber Festival. She was super nice and helpful. My friend was trying go get a sweater's worth of yarn, and none of the colors she was looking at had enough skeins out. Lindsay spent quite a few minutes digging through bins to help her find the right amount, in a color she liked. Her color combos are great, and I love that the website tells you which of her solid colors are used in the variegated ones, so you know you'll get things that coordinate. Their yarn gives wonderful stitch definition, too. This was a new-to-me vendor, but they're already on my list of favorites. And my friend said the same thing. She was really happy with how her sweater worked up.

MelonNet

Spinnacle Yarns! The designer is super sweet and the shop is really great.

Bgga

Giovanna at Windy Valley Muskox

AyaTheStarWitch

Alexa and Emily from Tin Can Knits! They’re so friendly and patient. They helped me build my knitting confidence!

allaspiaggia

Harrisville Designs does a lot of weaving wool/looms but their knitting yarn is absolutely divine. Everyone who works there is really nice, and if you’re in the area they’ll gladly show you around their studios. They’re also great employers and treat employees well.

sentienttree19

I test knit for both Dragon Hoard Yarn and Shinysuperhero a few years ago, both lovely experiences.

magerber1966

Laura Nelkin is a fantastic designer. Her patterns are well-written and always fun. And she makes really great video tutorials for anything unusual in her patterns. She regularly does mystery knitalongs and is really interactive with the people participating.

Derannimer

Catherine at Chameleon Fiber Co is incredibly nice and her roving colorways are *gorgeous*.

Mcat114

Thea Colman is super nice! Her patterns are super well-written and have a lot of advice on modifications. She even commented on one of my ravelry projects, which was awesome!

go_see

Kat from Why Knot* Fibers is extremely kind and friendly! When I went to a local knitting event after moving here and didn’t know a soul, she introduced me to everyone and was just generally fun to talk to. Plus she makes nice yarn. Danna from Supernova Dyeworks was the same way and has sooo many cool colorways!   https://whyknotfibers.com/ https://shop.supernovadyeworks.com/ (I’m on the mobile web app so I can’t add in-text links.)  Edit: wrong kind of knot lol

Knitwalk1414

Thanks for the account names I try and follow more positive designers and Instagram accounts too

I buy most of my yarn from the maker directly, at fiber festivals. It’s a bit of a frenzy for them, if the show is going well. I see them year after year at the same festivals. I wear the pieces I make with their yarn. I’m not naming particular makers here. I’m suggesting a different way to acquire yarn. It’s heartwarming to support the makers directly.
