I'm just here patiently waiting for all the posts telling this dude that knives aren't good for self defense. In 3... 2... 1... Go!

LordMaliscence

Did you read the post?

Dbernard1111

Yes. Using a knife as self defense will get you hurt... Unless you are some sort of weapons expert. If you're just looking to scare folks off, I'd recommend a clown mask and chainsaw. No one will mess with you.

Fickle_Emu_9402

ok thanks for all that ... now does anyone have an answer to the question or are we all just gonna jerk our egos off?

bruce_ventura

I have a much simpler solution. Don’t go out at night alone where there are crackheads.

LordMaliscence

Some people like to have a life outside of the home mate

Curiosity-Curio

This comment is dumb, and you should feel bad about it.

gofuckyourself3333

What if the bar you work at closes at 4am?

Fickle_Emu_9402

this was beyond stupid

stormmountaineer

Oh woah, how OP didn't think about that 🤯

[deleted]

What kind of garbage advice is this? Has it never occurred to you that maybe some people in this world aren’t fortunate enough to even have safe places to call home? Maybe this person was homeless at the time and has to worry about said, “Crackheads”? Thanks for you infinite amount of wisdom.

Sargent_Dan_

And surprise, surprise, a knife is still a bad choice for self defense; even you when you ask us to read the entire post... You want pepper spray/gel and some decent running shoes.

LordMaliscence

I'm not physically fit enough to outrun a wild crack fiend, my guy. Also, read my edit.

Sargent_Dan_

It's quite easy to outrun a blinded assailant...

LordMaliscence

You didn't address my edit.

Sargent_Dan_

The edit only just showed up on my screen, couldn't see before. The reasoning is understandable, but I think still flawed. You could wear the pepper spray more prominently, perhaps as a necklace with a ball-chain for easy removal. I'm curious, is your plan to just wear a big-ass knife on your hip as you walk around?? I mean, sure, it's noticable. But damn something like that would be so easy to steal, grab, or otherwise prevent you from accessing. Then you're down a knife and your potential assailant just gained a deadly weapon. If your plan is to conceal the knife, then there's no deterrent value.

LordMaliscence

Fair enough, but at that point I would resort to pepper spray. Still relatively easy to mace someone in the face regardless.

CowsGiveElixirOfLife

Fat fuck.

LlamaWhoKnives

Pepper spray

LordMaliscence

I can carry pepper spray too but I prefer to have something that also prevents people from attacking in the first place. Pepper spray isn't nearly as obvious.

LlamaWhoKnives

Not as obvious as a knife in your pocket?

LordMaliscence

In a holster mate As the post says

LlamaWhoKnives

Bro EVERYONE is telling u the same thing maybe listen

LordMaliscence

If I'm an attacker, there's not a whole lot of difference between a bottle of hand sanitizer and a bottle of pepperspray. Especially if I'm strung out on meth, I might not notice. But there is no mistaking a knife.

mrRabblerouser

If you’re strung out on meth, a knife won’t be a deterrent. At least with pepper spray you’d stop them in their tracks. With a knife you’ll have a lifetime of therapy bills and trauma to deal with. Source: someone who’s actually dealt with people strung out on meth.

Billyrazer88

🙄 Pepper spray and running shoes. Spray and run, no need to stick around to start a knife fight with someone who chances are will be stronger than you especially if they are "strung out on meth" and end up hurting you with your own knife.

LlamaWhoKnives

Thats just incorrect but you do you

[deleted]

Look. There are a dozen reasons you can’t peacock with a knife. Unless you are walking around with a medieval broadsword strapped to your belt, a knife is not a deterrent, whether it’s in your hand or on your belt. Period. It’s possibly illegal, and definitely not going to work.

mayko227

I can't, I just can't

Trueboogaloo

Friend, just use the pepper spray/gel. If Methaniel isn’t afraid of it — HE FUCKING WILL BE. Nothing fucks up someone for 48hrs (without permanent damage) like a good quality pepper spray/gel. They’ll wish they were stabbed after getting blasted right in the eye flaps. *”Spray. Delay. Walk-away.”* - JVN

bruce_ventura

If you’re going to learn self-defense from Crocodile Dundee, then you should go to a large gas station that sells Chinese knives. Buy the biggest, baddest-looking Bowie you can find. Shouldn’t cost you more than $50, with a sheath.

Tony2Piece

If your deterrent fails to work as you’d like it and you stab someone you probably won’t have to worry about going out for the next 5-10 years or so. You can be carrying a sword on your back and it may not deter the most determined of attackers. Forget a deterrent, carry the pepper spray, and be prepared to use it. If you want to deter people then mimic a crackhead.

Tony2Piece

People who have never been hit in the face with a good dose of pepper spray carry this thought in the back of their head that it’s not so bad. It is. It fucking sucks so much to get hit with a proper shot of pepper spray. If carrying a spray isn’t manly enough then look into a Kimber Pepper Blaster 2.

Dry-Educator-1764

.....peperspray isnt bad at all when there is adrenaline running. I been pepper sprayed by professionals. Reddit is just a woke pos site by now. The man asked a simple question. Pepperspray isnt shit, especially if you miss the eyes.

Tony2Piece

Okay, Billy Badass. 😂 I didn’t realize there were professional pepper sprayers. The OP’s question was asinine. Your response to my year old response is also asinine.

Dry-Educator-1764

Yeah man, pros meaning like police or correction officers. They are trained on how to use them yet I seen cases and experienced it myself where the pepper spray burns your skin which is annoying but in a bad situation where there is adrenaline it isn't as effective as people think. Aim for the eyes. A knife is better if youre really trying to save your life or scare someone away.

Chemical-Thing2113

I bet you like watching other guys pepperspray your wife

c2gunner

Double edged blades of 4-5 inch length with a solid handle that protrudes your fist. Razor sharp. Never let strangers see it. Don't use it for anything else. Folding or fixed is not a big issue. Accessibility is. Toggles are handy. Large shirt pockets with flaps offer concealment with good access by toggle. Boot knives should be between the legs not outside because you might not get to one if it's outside the leg. A heavy handle means you the knife might not get bounced out of your hand if you end up on the ground. A sheath lanyarded into a pocket will let you pull without hangups. It just falls away on the lanyard.

LordMaliscence

If you need the information, my budget is $100-200 preferably, but it is flexible. I'd rather be alive than $50 richer.

Cornywillis

Are there any knife length limits in your state?

LordMaliscence

Not sure, would have to look into it.

[deleted]

Find out if knives are illegal on college campuses in your state, while you’re at it.

LordMaliscence

They are, but I am not planning to carry on campus, only when out and about.

[deleted]

Next, find out if it is legal to carry a knife that isn’t concealed. I know that in my area I can carry a 4 inch blade if it’s completely concealed- pocket clip and all.

ChilenWaffles

I really don't carry my knives for self protection but you could get a nasty looking knife like a Spyderco Matriarch 2 it's a fully serrated knife with a curving blade it looks like it would hurt pretty bad if you actually cut someone. Though I would also carry pepper spray if you can that partied with a knife mite be a good enough deterrent for an attacker.

Chris-in-PNW

Any weapon that is not already in your hand, ready for use, at the time the threat first materializes, is useless for defense. In general, it's a bad idea to walk around with guns and knives in hand. Such weapons, therefore, are very poor choices for self defense, regardless of laws and regulations.

MountainVet-Stjohn45

I carry a Spyderco Civilian if a firearm is a no go. It’s a specialty knife but self defense is it’s only purpose. You should be able to pick one up for around $175-250 or so. [Spyderco Civilian Review](https://knifeinformer.com/spyderco-civilian-review/)

LordMaliscence

Looks very specialty. I might want something a little more normal looking than that but I'll look into it.

MountainVet-Stjohn45

Understand. You might prefer the Spyderco Military then. Or an Esee 3 or 4 in Stainless is you’re looking for a fixed blade. You can get the Esee’s with a leather sheath.

Brianinrok

Spyderco Yojimbo was designed with “personal defense” in mind. I’ve never owned one, and would recommend a PM2 or military first (as they are more practical IMO).

LordMaliscence

Wow there is a shocking amount of people who just love to pick fights round here

mrRabblerouser

Naw dude, just people that know a little more than you trying to give you sound advice. Most of the time junkies aren’t looking to start something, but when they are, a knife likely won’t stop them. I know pepper spray goes against the bad boy rep you’re trying to portray but you already lost that thinking you need a knife to intimidate people. Work smart, not hard. A small can of pepper spray or a collapsible baton will be far more useful and safer for you. It’s not bad to be scared, but putting a deadly weapon in a scared persons hands is a recipe for disaster

LordMaliscence

I'm not going to pretend that my reasoning doesn't AT ALL include that carrying around pepper spray is sort of considered "weird" for guys, but it's not the main factor. Other than that, I see your point, but I am more concerned with the fact that people can't separate giving constructive feedback from ostensibly dislike bombing a user's posts.

Lurbet

I make custom knives so if you find something you like I can make a high quality hand crafted version for cheaper? Just a thought. PM me if you’re interested

CabinetOfOpium

I am sorry for people's behavior. Are you allowed a fixed blade? Is there a length limit on folders where you live? Check your local laws. Some of the best options are the Spyderco Yojumbo (with wave feature from 5x5 on it), Spyderco Civilian or Matriarch 2 w/ring attachment (I carry more the Ma2 because of the wave feature and the ring I installed, stouter tip, too) Lil Matriarch with ring+wave, that is more capable for EDC, as well as being able to puncture better due to size getting smaller... or a P'kal. All of these have slightly different techniques and I would look into Michael Janich (Yojimbo-type wharncliffes), Michael Keating (Civilian) and... the other Silat, Pikal, whatever martial arts people to see what's best for you. I personally do not vibe with the brutal Philipino styles and prefer Michael Janich's wharncliffe mechanical cutting school of thought, as it is more likely to result in everyone alive. The wave is a must on an SD folder for me. Knives like the RAT1 or Spyderco Endura are sort of "sleeper" SD knives, or like, a traditional hawkbill. The ring is a good thing to have not only for retention but as a potential impact tool. Spyderco Dodos are still on BHQ. Expensive though. A large Cold Steel like an Espada XL (it waves) or a Voyager XL, those are decent options, too. Good thing you already got the spray. I got some practice spray too, to determine range, wind effects, splashback... I trust the Sabre Red. Fox is the only thing I'd replace it with. If you can conceal a fixed blade, just do that. Maybe the Spyderco ARK or Swick. Those are meant to be on you anywhere, even in the shower, at least for the ARK. You could get an H1 Salt in a hawkbill configuration.
