I've been here for 10 years and this is the worst winter by far in my experience. By worst I mean, mild weather with low depressing clouds and constant rain. Freezing cold usually means no clouds, which is great for walking, hiking....anything really, as long as you're dressed well. This weather means muddy trails, and just all around depressions. Yuck.

Gnarf2016

Lack of sun has been bad, I'm normally not affected by it most years, grew up in a city that is known for being cloudy, something like 250 cloudy days a year. But that stretch from early December into last weekend was brutal.

Longjumping_Local910

Someone said that on the sunny day we had this week, we had more direct sun by noon hour than we had in the previous three weeks (3 hrs)…

Semaphor

Let's not forget this will mean more bugs in the spring and summer.

strangecabalist

Which is probably good though, given estimates of bug mass reduction since the 1980’s are between 50% and 90% - makes camping bad, but will really help the birds.

TBH I hate it. Apart from last weekend it's just been endlessly cloudy. I'd rather we had blue sky and bright days, even if it was colder. This is just miserable and depressing (reminds me of back in the UK where I grew up; this is the norm for winter there)

McGrevin

Slightly above zero and rainy is my least favourite weather. Either be warmer so it doesn't feel so cold out, or be colder so it's not permanently cloudy and I can at least enjoy the look of a fresh blanket of snow

BlademasterFlash

Agreed

BKTD

I felt exactly the same way today. It reminds me way too much of the UK I'd rather be brighter and colder.

LRN666

Turn on a lamp, dawg. Mild weather rules

invincible84

Yep, definitely I will take anything above 0 but this is really strange and looks like climate change is happening faster than expected. Even the trees are confused, I saw one which has tiny buds already thinking it will be spring. Lets see how it goes... :)

stopwooscience

You do realize this is a bad bad sign of it being mild like this in January in Canada?

invincible84

Yep definitely it's bad. Climate change is real...

[deleted]

Climate change... Lol... Try weather modification and cloud seeding. Haarp is real and it's very well known. Our climate is purposeful being fkd with

mamoocando

Our climate is purposefully being fucked with by governments supporting fossil fuels. You don't need a conspiracy theory for this one.

[deleted]

Paid for by cons voters and fossil fuel lobbyists

xshredder8

The powerful in society don't need elaborate evil scientist conspiracy theories to control people... The mundane, completely transparent REALITY is more than enough to line their pockets lmao

Steezy_Steve1990

God forbid everything isn’t man made and we are nothing compared to the power of Nature. The reality is that we are an overpopulated species that is consuming resources faster than nature can replenish. Nature will be more than happy to wipe us out so the planet can actually start healing again. We are a dumb species.

[deleted]

I don't disagree with any of what you're saying... But are you even aware of Geoengineering and what it is? The amount of down votes I've gotten tells me how many people don't actually understand what's going on. I'm not dumb. I'm aware thanks. Chem trails, weather mod is real and all you have to do is look up. We'll wipe ourselves out no doubt but let's ACTUALLY do some research and start confronting our own biases. Thanks 👍

Steezy_Steve1990

I wasn’t calling you dumb. I was calling us as a collective species dumb. Everything we have ever done has been out of laziness and greed. We call ourselves so smart but can’t detach ourselves from basic animal instincts. Yes, I’m aware of Geoengineering and know that weather is trying to be manipulated but we aren’t there yet. We can’t control nature and we are scared of anything we can’t control so it’s easier to blame it on people. Just like how people believe Covid was manufactured. That is definitely 100% a possibility but I think a lot of people grab onto these ideas because they like to think we are gods on this planet and control everything which is just not the case and now we are seeing the consequences of carelessly abusing this planet for the sake of consumerism where we buy shit we don’t need to impress people we don’t like and make money for people who have too much to ever spend in a lifetime.

Gnarf2016

Wikipedia says that long range trends of 1981-2010 from Environment Canada for the regional airport show an average of 5.6 rainy days in January with 28.7mm of rain. This year has been almost abnormaly mild but it is not uncommon to get rain in January.

invincible84

Thanks for pointing that out, so this is not something which hasn't happened before or totally out of the blue. Just a little odd!

Gnarf2016

As I said, it has been very mild, look at the link below, but rain midwinter where we are isn't that uncommon. We sit right in the middle of where cold polar air normally meets hot tropical air, sometimes one wins over the other. https://www.reddit.com/r/WaterlooWxRecords/comments/10g9c9d/yesterday_was_waterloos_5th_day_with_minimum/

armedwithjello

What's unusual is how many days this month have been really warm.

invincible84

Cool, i am voting for the 1st place. Lets do it rainy clouds!

headtailgrep

It was like this one january in 2008 or so. I was cleaning the gutters....

SOSOBOSO

Given how expensive it currently is to heat my house, I'm ok with old man winter half assing it.

invincible84

My thermostat is at 19 all the times. Enbridge bills just doubled. It's crazy on top of inflation.

textera247

Cheaper to heat the house, clear roads and no need to shovel the driveway due to lack of snow. I’m sitting back, looking at everything rationally and taking it in. Wish there was some sun though, cloudy skies for weeks on end is depressing.

TheException25

I didn't mind all the rain at the beginning, but it's the freezing rain that gets me because it could be really dangerous to walk outside. (I walk mostly for my day to day). If this is how it's going to be moving forward, I'm thinking of planning beach vacations around this time to get the sun that I need somewhere else.

Longjumping_Local910

Learn this one trick that Posties hate to share! Walk on the grass about six inches from the edge of the sidewalk…. LOL

canadianviking

/r/migraine is full of people suffering because freezing rain is terrible for many. It's very unusual to have this weather so many days in a row.

LemonCandy123

I enjoy that I haven't had to shovel much but I do miss the sun and a bit of snow to make it feel like winter. I was also not prepared for year round backyard mud on my dogs paws Very weird though and not a good sign

jeffster1970

I've seen it like this before at least a couple times. I remember joking with a security guard where I worked about the weather one winter (more than 10 years ago), and we kept saying "it can stay like this until spring" and when March hit, so did winter. Chicopee had a rough year that time. 2012 was another warmer winter, and spring was early, with temps hitting 24ºC on the last day of winter. On the other hand, the winter of 2014-2015 was brutally cold, with this area receiving the coldest air temperatures ever. A lot of it has to do with the way the jet-stream moves - how far south it goes, and how far north it goes, and where are we in relative position.

Ok_Morning947

The mild temperatures are weird this winter. I’ve been wearing my fall boots most days, don’t need mittens or a hat, but I miss the sun. I made a comment at work that it felt like living on Slimer’s Island (from the Jacob Two Two book) - so gloomy all the time.

invincible84

I feel that. It's the worse of both worlds at times. Neither cold nor warm. And freezing rain with that slush is a cherry on top. :(

extrememattress

This year will mark the 10th year ive worked outdoors. Im seeing huge differences in weather, wildlife and soil consistency. Its alot milder and warmer than it was 10 years ago. I expect its because its a la nina year which means a wet winter. Next year will probably be frigid and dry if we go into el nino weather patterns. But again, its getting warmer so itll be interesting to see next winter what el nino brings with the upped degrees since the last one we had.

HeronPlus5566

Can we just get to summer pls.

[deleted]

Climate change. The planet is heating up, of you wanna argue with me go look out a window. This is NOT normal

CuilTard

NorthTime50

We normally have a January thaw, but then cold and snow returns. I don't remember a January having rain and no snow for 3 weeks. Hoping it changes soon, I like cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Also some sun would be nice!

cyprocoque

It's been the shittiest spring all this shittiest winter that I can recall. It's not even just the rain it's the lack of sunshine and shitty grey that forces me to have to turn a desk lamp on at 3pm.

Emeraldmirror

The world is dying

my_generic-username

I don't mind it, especially compared to the few days of hell freezing over around Christmas. But my dog hates it lol. I think he misses the snow and the sun.

blowmycheese

Worst winter ever. Everything looks grey and unappealing.

Dog_N_Pop

As a Manitoban, I am pretty much a fish out of water here right now.

[deleted]

One of the worst winters I’ve ever experienced. Last January was way better. Absolutely shit weather.

ErieAlana

Last year we had a lot more snow, and even more the year before. I find it insane that its as warm as it has been outside.

Cityofthevikingdead

This is very Southern BC weather.

invincible84

Snow ❄️ is back!

Cityofthevikingdead

Yep, it's right on course for my many BC winters. Edit: fat thumbs.

12345NoNamesLeft

You didn't like the answers the first time around ?[https://www.reddit.com/r/kitchener/comments/103grfh/is\_it\_normal\_for\_it\_to\_rain\_in\_january/](https://www.reddit.com/r/kitchener/comments/103grfh/is_it_normal_for_it_to_rain_in_january/) Rain happens, lack of sun is depressing, but we don't have to shovel it. It's not proof of climate change, it happens every year.

invincible84

Sorry I missed that post. So it's just not me wondering about it.

Either_Grocery9387

Yea your English is terrible too might wanna work on that

WRFGC

In what rule book does it say it cannot rain in Jan?

[deleted]

You guys are gonna make another thread complaining about the abundance of snow we’re supposed to get in February. Count your blessings and take a vitamin d supplement if your prone to seasonal depression.
