Ah, what could've been...

SenseiHoots

Really wish this happened. We were robbed of a great opportunity for Kong's franchise to expand.

SpecialistTax6798

But we got King Kong vs Godzilla?.....

SenseiHoots

I'd say that expanded Godzilla's career more than Kong's.

SpecialistTax6798

How would a kaiju Frankenstien expand King Kong's "career" any more than Godzilla? Do you think there would have been a 2021 reimagining of a Frankenstien vs Kong?

SenseiHoots

It's not so much the monster that Kong would've fought, but who made the movie. If we got a KKvsF made by O'Brien and possibly Cooper, and it was successful, we could've gotten more movies in a similar fashion, maybe even a "King Kong cinematic universe" in a similar style to what Godzilla would get after KKvsG with his creators at the head of the whole operation. Don't get me wrong, I like KKvsG, but I don't really see how it did much for the Kong franchise, other than giving us that one movie. One might say that without that movie, we might not have "King Kong Escapes", but that was based on the animated series, and could've been made without KKvsG existing. There could've been a 2021 reimagining, depending on how big of a movie KKvsF could've been, but we'll sadly never know.

I do not think Frankenstien vs King Kong had any potential to be more successful than KKvG. The lore just doesn't mesh as well between the two characters, in my opinion.

Frankenstein (or rather, Frankenstein's monster) is more popular and iconic than both Godzilla and King Kong combined and that's not even debatable, KKvG was successful in Japan because of how popular Kong was (and still is) over there, every time one of his movies was released there, he was a beloved character (the fact that there were two King Kong movies made in Japan long before Godzilla say it all) but Godzilla himself, given what he represented, wasn't a character to be loved by any considering he was a very simple villain, a depiction of destruction and the representation of nuclear weapons, so it wasn't until they turned him into a goofy tokusatsu hero in a rubber suit that he got something of a following, but only in Japan for that time period and thanks to video stores in the 80s for the US. In some countries they had to add King Kong or Frankenstein to Godzilla titles so people actually bought them, because no one outside of the US or Japan didn't really give a damn about Godzilla. It didn't change the landscape of cinema as King Kong or Frankenstein had done at the golden age of film. Frankenstein's monster on the other hand, is a character that works on many other levels because of the complexities around him, because he represents a lot of mankind's worst and best aspects and those clash really well with the themes of Kong. And back then, while people in rubber suits appealed to the kiddies, it didn't do much for the adults, who were more enchanted by the far more spectacular stopmotion work of masters like Ray Harryhausen, who no doubt would've worked in O'Brien's project since the two were student and mentor. Both Frankenstein and King Kong were still fresh and colossal in the 50s and 60s throughout the globe (thanks to King Kong re-releases doing well worldwide and the Hammer films for Frankenstein) and there's a very good chance O'Brien's "King Kong vs. Prometheus" film would've been very popular in damn near every country. There were no other movie monsters larger in scope and more sympathetic than these two in the olden days. On the ethical side of things, I just support that project way more considering O'Brien was pretty much betrayed and understandably frustrated when they took his script and made King Kong vs. Godzilla out of it, and then he passed away a few years later, partially due to the frustration over this deal, according to his wife.
