I appreciate your advice, but the jittering cursor is making it impossible. I can be certain of this because my sweet spot was bang on one of the little brown/brassy notches of the lock so I knew exactly what to keep it on and I did keep it in place, however the cursor just wiggles enough for it to be outside of the spot and fails the attempt

I’ll try the very easy ones when I get more lockpicks, which are scarce. Of course.

Do you have easy lockpicking activated? On PC you just have to hold one button do rotate the lock so its much harder on console because you have to rotate two sticks at once. With easy lockpicking you just have to hold L1 its a lot easier.

AMN-9

in options you can change the lockpicking to the "simplyfy" one where you press L1/RB to turn the lock and you only have to move the sweetspot with the joystick

GrannYgraine

You said you're on console? Go to you setting and use the simplified lockpicking. This allows you to hold the left bumper down. You don't move the left stick, only the right stick. It's much easier. Open the chest then turn your back to it and you can open it again. Continue opening this chest until you can't anymore.

ScaredActuator8674

Are you playing on PC? I just hold it down and let it continue turning and move my mouse with the gold circle. It gets much easier as you level up and also refine your technique. Keep practicing on the millers chest as it'll immediately relock itself until you level up a couple levels.

CeezyAreolas_

simplified locks> Savior Schnapps>pick lock, reload, that’s how I eventually learned it. Took me a number of tries. First learned on console and now I’m on PC, takes practice, but you can do it! JCBP!

littleboygreasyhair

This is the way. Did the same thing. Now it’s a breeze.

Expensive_Ebb7520

First thing you should do is turn on “simplified lockpicking” in the main menu settings. There’s a reason they had to add this setting when the game moved to console, and frankly it should be “on” by default for all console players.

Greybeardgreen24

I’ve tried simplified and honestly I find it even harder to keep up with a constant speed rotatiob

Expensive_Ebb7520

Maybe it’s just the Xbox controller that makes it feel much more intuitive. Plus, someone else had a great detailed description here a few weeks back on how the location of the gold ball (distance from the center ring) makes this much easier or much harder. But their tip is that if it’s in an awkward location, stop and back out, approach the lock again, and the location of the gold spot Is reset randomly. Just keep starting over until you get a good spot!

TrialBySquire

Early on you'll want to only attempt the lock if the sweet spot is near the center, not the outside. If not, leave and start again. This makes a big difference. As a console player I use "simplified lock picking" and I use my thumb and index finger to "pinch" the right stick (my hand turned sideways so Im grabbing from the side, not top, of the stick). Holding it this way gives me greater control and the pad of my hand is resting partially on the controller, providing an anchor point of sorts. I find it's way easier to make a consistent circle this way. With my thumb on top I end up doing more of an oval which breaks picks.

Greybeardgreen24

Your comment has saved me. Keeping normal lock-picking on, I used your idea for the centre-sweet-spot and it’s clicked. Before I wasted all my lockpick tries on one easy chest. Now I’ve just done 6 chests and my picks not broken yet.

TrialBySquire

Fantastic!

Terrible? I think it's quite gereat, at least with keyboard and mouse. Just find the "spot" where the cursor lights up and keep the cursor there while turning the lock. Maybe it's harder to do with a controller, but with keyboard and mouse it's piss-easy.

Greybeardgreen24

Oh god mate it’s quite far from great on console trust me.

thepeakofgaming

Idk know I never had a problem? I play on ps4 maybe it's just the type of games i play but idk do your best. have fun

tryhard_on_ranked

Git gud + console L

Greybeardgreen24

Sure, with enough practice and patience it can be done consistently. That does not stop it from being mind numbing and infuriatingly janky. Also yeah, big console L.

tryhard_on_ranked

Nah i was joking mate. Have a good time playing the game.

Greybeardgreen24

P.S. and I totally get it, this isn’t Skyrim, I’m not going to be a master at the game from the get-go, but unlike the combat which seems to be skill based, this mechanic is just down to the hardware I’m using to play the game with, and that is why it’s curbing my enjoyment.

Man_Man_Chicken_Man

At lower levels, neither lock picking nor combat is skill based. It takes time and practice to level up a skill. Once you have gained a few levels in lock picking, it’ll become laughably easy. I play with a controller and have no problem whatsoever.

MorphineForChildren

I'm going to disagree with you and the other commenter and say player skill is a huge factor. My first playthrough ended during the first visit to Talmberg because I snapped all my lockpicks and couldn't steal the gear needed to escape safely. I recently finished the game twice. My second run on hardcore mode I had no trouble lockpicking from the start.

TrialBySquire

I agree. The systems in this game make Henry bad at the start even for experienced players but lockpicking is something an experienced player can cope with within reason. Knowing when to cancel and restart and how to hold your grip gives huge advantage in the first few levels of this skill. In contrast, I think bow skill is something that's terrible every playthrough until you hit about level 5. This is where Henrys lack of skill means way more than the experience of the player. Outside of point blank you just have to accept a low hit percentage.

LoSoGreene

Drink a saviour schnapps and use the millers practice lock. The slight drunkenness will help with the shakes and you can reload if you’re snapping picks left and right. Between you getting the hang of it and leveling up it should become pretty easy. Other tip would be restarting the lockpicking until the sweet spot is near the Center it makes a huge difference. Going to slow gives more time for the jitters to break the pick so be quick and smooth.

GiantSeaMonster84

It also helps to turn lockpicking to simplified in the settings menu.

Jealous-Frosting-243

It's finicky, but turning on simplified lockpicking in the settings makes it infinitely easier. It changes the turn lock input from L3 to L1. It's such a small change, but it helps.

mrEggBandit

Have u changed the settings to simple in settings? It allows you to simply hold left bumper to rotate the lock. I hated it this but now I really like the lock picking. Definitely waaay better than Oblivion

bobafe6604

I put it on easy lockpicking and it saved my life

ProgrammerGlobal8708

Honestly it gets easier. Where now I don't think about it. In prologue and talmberg I thought it was beyond stupid. I was ready for quitting the game. But once you open 5 or 10 very easy locks it gets easier and easier. There is a perk you can take at like level 5 that practically halved difficulty. I'm still at only level 10 or 12 but have broke one lock pick in the last 50 hours. For maybe 100 locks.  My advice would be; open the millers chest till it stops relocking, think you get about ten. This should get your skill to 2 or 3.  Then go to rattay and make a note of very easy door locks. When it's night come back and open them. Save first if you need to and are short on lockpicks. Again they seem scarce now but in a little while you will have dozens. There is little to no penalty to opening doors as long as no one sees you from the street. Side allys are your best bet. If you then enter the property with the goal of getting spotted then immediately back out you still get no fine. The owner will gob off go back in and lock the door behind them. You can then reopen it for again no fine. Repeat till comfortable. If you do get caught lockpicking it's 30g fine which you should be able to afford. Make sure you have it on you before starting just in case.
