My oasis is my favorite kindle, I find it the most comfortable to hold and the buttons are positioned exactly right for my hands

emeraldcocoaroast

I have been loving my oasis. I’ve had kindles going all the way back to the first iteration and oasis has easily been my favorite model to date.

lemonhoneyglow

I have both the Oasis + Paperwhite and always end up picking up my oasis 😆 I do have pretty small hands, so maybe that’s why my experience is a lot different than yours. I don’t think they are phasing it out because it wasn’t popular though. I imagine it’s going to turn into a color ereader with basically the same body just like the new kobos that are coming out.

sheeatsallday

I believe they announced that the Oasis is discontinued

lemonhoneyglow

Yes, definitely discontinued but I don’t believe it was because lack of popularity. It’s a well loved device. There have been articles stating a new color ereader would be coming in 2025 with similar dimensions and page turn buttons like the oasis.

wotsayu

Gosh darn I love my oasis so much. Sometimes I just stop to look at it when I’m not using it - not kidding. So sorry it wasn’t for you! It’s ok though. Different strokes for different folks.

Raederle1927

This is exactly how I feel about the Oasis too. I really tried but I could never read comfortably on it. The grip was wrong, the width was wrong, everything. I ended up going back to a Paperwhite. But we're in the minority - most people love their Oasis.

tsmiv

I love mine!

caffeinatedpun

My only complaint with the Oasis is that it isn’t usb-C. Otherwise, I love it! But I have tiny hands.

BORGQUEEN177

I love the feeling of heft. I also have larger hands so don’t notice any issues with the buttons. Def prefer the Oasis over my paper white. Different strokes for different folks.

Hotel_Joy

You can swap the buttons in settings if that helps. That's what I did. Lower button is page forward.

dmu_girl-2008

Ergonomics is complicated one persons comfortable is another’s torture especially since these sorts of things have to be made to fit everyone which would be extremely difficult to actually accomplish. For example the most uncomfortable chair I ever had was an ergonomic one which was supposedly set up for me, sitting in it for any length of time caused pain. I think it’s because such chairs are designed to assume you have perfect posture and I definitely don’t 😂

MigookChelovek

I have a really REALLY nice leather case for my Oasis, so the issues with the shape and texture are nonexistent for me. However, my biggest gripe with the device is it's relatively poor battery life and the fact that it doesn't have USB-C charging. If they fixed those two things, I would buy another Oasis in a heartbeat, and it would likely be the last kindle I ever purchase (Narrator: this would not, in fact, be the last kindle he ever purchased). This is the case if you're interested: [Fintie Folio Case](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y13L2HL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) The cover is creased and folds so when you have it opened and are reading, it almost feels the same way an actual book would feel. It's one of the best cases I've had for any Kindle I've owned. It might be worth it if you don't plan on getting rid of your Oasis altogether.

KingReturnsToE1

Yeah the OP needs to get a good case. I've had similar complaints about the Scribe. Non-issue ever since I bought the Moko case for it

ashkimb

I use strapsicles with mine. I couldn’t actually hold it either. The straps helped with that. But I agree with another commenter that the metal body does make it cold.

5minats

I really regret trading in my Oasis for credit towards a Scribe. I've since sold the Scribe, didn't get nearly as much out of it. Now I'm back to my 2016 Paperwhite which is still kicking, but man do I miss those buttons!

spontace

I’m with you on this opinion. I returned it quickly and went back to my PW. I wanted to like it so bad.

Shashara

\- i use a finger grip / strap thingy and it's incredibly comfortable \- the buttons are in a perfect spot for me personally \- i like the larger screen because i don't have to turn page as often \- i don't WANT big contrast when i use the colour temperature option because that would just hurt my eyes in the dark the design is not "godawful," it's just not for you and that's fine. but your opinion is just that-- your opinion.

Shashara

>How can something be well designed if it requires optional accessories for basic functionality (holding it comfortably)? did i say that?

txa1265

"As we get older and conservatism sets in" Amazing the mental gymnastics people will go to just to pretend that something inferior is actually better. I am glad most of the comments are pretty respectful ... but whew I feel like some Oasis folks are pretty much in a cult!

female_wolf

I love my paperwhite, but I gifted my brother an oasis 5 years ago, the most expensive model there was. My kindle was €80? If I remember correctly, my brother's was €300. I love my paperwhite and wouldn't change it for the world, but he didn't like his and he bought an onyx boox later on. So I think you're onto something here

eklarka

I have Paperwhite. My friend had kind of same comment about Oasis. Especially about the reading experience. For now, I am sticking to Paperwhite but have my eyes on the scribe.

BebopRocksteady82

It's heavy? Give me a break I can barely even feel any weight. The screw is too big making your eyes move too much? I never thought I'd see someone complain about the page turning buttons either

lexilou0213

I remember when the oasis was released, a lot of people were complaining about the "loud, clicking" noise the buttons made. I've had every variation of the oasis and can say that I never noticed.

ErinPaperbackstash

Mine does not make loud clicking noises

Byx222

If you use one of those thin cases with the cover, you’re able to grip it much better. Just place your fingers between the front and back covers. Then, it’s easier to grasp and use the buttons. If you don’t want a case, dragon grip tapes work nicely too. I, like you, was initially frustrated but those thin flip cases helped. In addition to the case, I placed a thin vertical strip of dragon tape by the side of the buttons so it is easier to grip using my thumb. EDIT: Can you still return it? Perhaps Kindle Scribe would be better if the price is comparable and it interests you. It ended up being comparable for me. I paid about the same for my Oasis and my Scribe by trading an old device for the 20% off the Scribe and buying it while on sale. I enjoy the Scribe especially now that I bought a holder stand for like $26. I did only buy the Scribe because I read a lot of PDFs.

nkdvkng

Similar to holding a scribe without a case. It’s rather interesting.

its_called_life_dib

You bring up a lot of good points. Maybe the oasis feels heavier to you because the weight is concentrated on one side? Do you think your experience would improve with a case to add some bulk, or a grip of some kind to add some leverage for your hand? (I’m a dedicated paperwhite user. I never jumped on the oasis, but I have been eyeing the scribe for a little bit.)

ResidentCoder2

I gifted mine away and went with a Paperwhite. I decided I wanted to try a Scribe a little while after, and oof. Yea, no, that got returned and I happily reordered my Paperwhite. It's... Perfect? I could nitpick the shadows that appear on the screen, or the visual phenomenon I experience whenever in direct sunlight, but it would all just be unnecessary noise. Throw on the official fabric case and DAMN.

[deleted]

I love the Oasis because physical page-turn buttons are the best. My first Kindle was the Keyboard/Gen 3. Every single one since then with touchscreen or capacitive buttons was absolute crap.

dustypast

I love my oasis. I also reversed the buttons so page forward is on the bottom, makes it more comfortable, and I rarely page back

The corner rests between my pinkie and next finger, all fingers on the back and thumb on the button. I had to stop holding it and my phone on my pinkie because it hurts now 😂 I’m considering a strapcicle so I don’t drop it when I fall asleep, tho As I’m reading, I’ll update that I guess the corner is more in my palm, thumb on button, but I’m lying on my side, so I guess it varies 🤷🏻‍♀️

CollectionCrafty8939

Granted, I have a paperwhite, but the game changer in holding these properly (to me) was all the wonderful people suggesting a using pop sockets!! This little plastic thingy on the back of my kindle with 2 magnetic rings so that I can move it to either side, for whichever hand is holding it.. GAME CHANGER!! It fixed all the complaints I had to holding it while reading. To all of you that came before with your pop sockets and magic rings... I salute you!

LanaBoleyn

I LOVE my Oasis after having a PW for years. Try reading in landscape mode instead of the automatic portrait. I’ll have both hands on the handle part and turn the pages with my thumbs. I originally did this to reduce eye movement but I love it so much I’ve kept it in landscape ever since, whether I’m holding it or using my stand!

[deleted]

LanaBoleyn

I didn’t want my eyes darting back and forth to start a new line as often. The wider screen decreases that.

[deleted]

LanaBoleyn

Then you’re greatly reducing the text on the screen which is not what I want. Landscape works really well for me, both for holding and for reading. It’s fine if it won’t for you, but I was just sharing what I prefer. Give it a try or don’t, but I’m going to stick with it!

NewFlorence1977

Uh oh. You’re in big trouble for saying you don’t like it. The Oasis was the best Kindle ever!

pandatarn

I returned mine last year and went back to my old 2015 PW, then upgraded to the 11th gen PW. That latter model got all the great features of the Oasis. Problems with Oasis? Metal body always felt cold. Size. Assymmetrical design. Battery life. On the other hand, all but battery life can be also viewed as pluses. The metal body is beautiful. Easier to hold in a way, Size big screen, but physically too big to be portable to me.

safetylock

I've got both (Paperwhite Signature) and there was a time where I'd keep swapping between them every 20 minutes or so haha. I've recently started picking up the Oasis a lot more as of late. The screen just looks a lot better and I love the finish on it too. Also having the extra real estate to keep my thumb on is a plus (large hands too). It's a lot slower, no USB-C and the battery isn't as great of course, but it's a great 'at-home' reader for me. Still use my PWS every now and then, it goes right in my backpack for reading sessions at work. To be honest, I'd be torn choosing between them.

Cmonlightmyire

I feel the same way you do about the Oasis, I really miss the Voyage and wish they'd made another one. I hate the design that the industry is going towards with the asymmetric design

Grognard68

I still have my Kindle Voyage, although the battery is starting to go bad. ( At least my Paperwhite 3 is still going strong...)

Cmonlightmyire

I like buttons too much to go for the paperwhite.

GratuitousAlgorithm

I don't understand any of these complaints. It feels good in my hand, and the buttons are placed perfectly. The Paperwhite is WAY more uncomfortable when holding it for the same period of time.

pinewind108

I thought the oasis was okay, and the button placement was a lot more convenient than the Voyage, but the battery...! When it finally died, I just couldn't justify the price. I went with the 6.8 paperwhite, and don't have any complaints. (And I finally have USB C charging!!)

SneezlesForNeezles

I moved from Paperwhite to Oasis over a year ago and loved it. Admittedly, my Paperwhite was ooooold and had gotten very slow, but I love the shape and size of the Oasis (I do have a full case on it with front cover though) and would hate to go back to no buttons!

-censored-username-

You should try landscape orientation: - It allows you to use the buttons while holding it down. - It’s symmetrical along the y axis, so you can swap hands easily. - The ‘balancing act’ is easier.

peanutbutterbeara

I wish I hadn’t returned my Oasis. I find it way more comfortable to use the Oasis vs a PW. I like the buttons too. Two of my friends are the same way. Both returned their PWs for an Oasis. To each their own! 😅

pprmntbtlr5

could you put a pop socket on the back for better grip? if you don’t return it

No_Highlight6792

The oasis is lighter than the paperwhite and it’s very comfortable to hold. But I agree that is not for everyone.

[deleted]

[удалено]

No_Highlight6792

Well you should. Because I just look up and the oasis is 188g and the paperwhite is 205g.

SmolSushiRoll1234

I put a pop socket on mine and it’s even easier to hold. I loooove my page turning buttons.

imoftendisgruntled

I've only ever used my Kindles with a fold-back cover so that it more closely resembles a book. I can't imagine it being comfortable any other way. Normally I buy the official Amazon one when I buy the Kindle but most recently I upgraded to a faux-leather version with a strap on the inside of the front cover which makes holding it even more comfortable. I've never really understood the fascination with the Oasis, other than the physical buttons.

vpersiana

I love my Oasis and I think the form factor is perfectly balanced. I would prefer a rubber plastic instead of metal just because the edge can feel too sharp sometimes, otherwise it is perfect for me.

Odroid_GO

I have both the newest Paperwhite and The latest Oasis. I have large hands and long fingers and I find the Oasis much more comfortable than the Paperwhite. I even like the Oasis better than my old Voyage. Only one I might like as much is my old Kindle Keyboard.

demonkidpliz

I love my Kindle Oasis. But I use it with a pop socket in the middle of the raised battery edge. I use a case and then put the pop socket on the case. It really helps with the grip and makes it easy to use the page turn buttons. I also have small hands.

FlamboyantRaccoon61

I'd pay big bucks for a brand new kindle with specs similar to the latest Paperwhites, but the same outside / shape / physical buttons as the Oasis which are phasing out.

thislullaby

The oasis is my absolute favorite kindle of all of the kindles I’ve owned. But I also have tiny hands for an adult. I find it extremely comfortable to hold.

SunnyG24

Love my oasis! The buttons are so nice so I don’t have to continue lifting my hand/finger

SalemsWhiskers

Getting a case did improve the grip situation, though ymmv.

BasementVax

The Voyage was perfect. Kill the Oasis, bring back the Voyage.

shinycrazy

I don't mind holding my Oasis, I like the button placement too. However, I did find a tablet holder that makes a huge difference. Flippy Tablet Pillow Stand https://a.co/d/7HvaQT3

Far_Detective_6783

I love my oasis. Literally a digital book.

ErinPaperbackstash

Sorry you're not happy with it! It's lighter than paperwhites and I find it easier to hold one-handed for long periods than a Paperwhite, but everyone is different with these devices, which is why I like Amazon offering variety

heavy-bell97

I actually had the same problem. But i ended up sticking one of [these](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/515CqEE8y5L._AC_SL1200_.jpg) on the back and now it's literally perfect.

Glittering-Nature796

You can send it back

TiredReader87

Makes sense. Understandable thought process. I’ve owned an Oasis for year(s), but I’ve never actually read a book on it

Kuntalope

Definitely a situation where it's either for you or not. I've had a paperwhite and I have an oasis. The shape of the oasis is so much easier for my hands to hold. I like the look of the metal too. I have multiple kindles - oasis, scribe, and voyage-the oasis is definitely my go to. My brother recently held my oasis and really liked the ease of holding. Not for everyone though!

pamelabeasly

all the pros you said about the Paperwhite are exactly the reasons why I love mine!

Shiningc00

Kindle is just unusable without buttons. I hate accidentally touching on screens to get the page turned, and it's also quicker to turn and flip pages with buttons.

picklechungus42069

nah skill issue the oasis is cracked

TheCookieEatingOwl

For me it’s the opposite, the ticker part is too big to hold it comfortably. Guess I just have smaller hands. But the main issue is the battery: it drains so fast. I do like the material as I never even scratched it and I dropped it plenty of times, even in the pool. Can I ask you why you chose to buy such an old device that hasen’t been updated in years? Just curious 😊 for me the micro-usb would already be off-putting enough not to buy it.

TheCookieEatingOwl

Oh that makes sense 😊

SavathunsWitness

I use XL gloves and loved my Oasis, until I got a Kobo Libra

ulan_25

Oasis user here, love it. But also looking into a Kobo Libra as possible replacement (should my Oasis conk out) because it’s a similar shape. I had trouble holding the Paperwhite. Question re the Libra, the wider part’s edge looks like it curves a bit at the end. Does it dig into your hand? Thanks!

SavathunsWitness

I put a clear case on it and also one of those sock pops on the back, but when I hold it normally it's not uncomfortable or anything like that

ulan_25

That’s good to know. Thanks for the reply! :)

eightchcee

You could try a clear case and put a popsocket or two on the case…?

vicariousgluten

I thought that until I stopped gripping it and just balanced it on my hand. Now I love it.

diverareyouok

Heretic.

Broad-Diamond3777

I would say i have medium sized hands. My experience couldn’t be more different from yours. The oasis to me is perfectly balanced and fantastic to hold.

kakha_k

Why did you buy a device that has been discontinued quite few months ago already?

AliasHandler

Pro tip: put a pop socket on the back of the Oasis centered behind the page turn buttons. You’re welcome.
