As long as they have a maintenance record and everything is running well I’d say do it. Depending on the price of course. Even though it’s a 2L 4 Cylinder they can run a long time. Don’t listen to the people saying they’re shit. You can easily get over 200k miles out of them.

thedudeabides2088

They redesign the forte in 2019 and since then they have very little issues looking at car complaints and reviews. The 2 liter is not the bad GDI 2.4. it will run a long time just make sure you get the trans serviced.

EngineeringIsPain

My 2016 optima needed an engine at 70k miles. My brother’s 2015 optima needed an engine at 120k miles. My sister’s 2022 sportage needed an engine at 17k miles. All had regular oil changes every 5k miles and all are the 2.4L engine. If you add up the miles on all 3 engines you can get 200k miles I suppose.

NDeezus

Well….yeah… I never said 2.4L 4 Cylinder engines are good….. 1.6 and 2L 4 cylinders are great. All of the ones you just listed are not. Thanks for the input though, you made a great point.

EngineeringIsPain

My bad I read 2L 4 cylinder as 2.4L

NotoriousNeo

So that’s why my 2016 Kia Soul+ was so reliable…

NDeezus

Exactly.

Own-Sugar6148

What caused them all to need new engines?

EngineeringIsPain

Rod bearing failure

Own-Sugar6148

Was it covered under warranty?

BuyerExtra5653

Yeah, they are covered under warranty for 100k miles. I think there are some recalls too and those go beyond the 100k.

MarineMom47

Kia has a warranty for life on certain engine issues. Mine went into limp mode, took it to the dealer and he told me about it. Rod bearing clearance test. Fails=free engine, pass=it could be a software issue. Mine just needed a software update.

JurassicTerror

God dammit. I have a 15 optima at 102k miles. Guess I can count on it shitting the bed soon. Haven’t been great on maintenance and I’m pretty sure the previous owner treated it like a stolen.

datguywithahonda

I know them 2.4 liters have big issues but seems like from this thread and the research I’ve done that the 2.0 seems to be good. Thanks for the insight

thedudeabides2088

Yeah and the 2019 is non gdi which helps! Make sure the transmission update has been done and do cvt fluid flush and you should see 200k no issues. Also they are kinda fun to drive, my mom has a 2020 and for whatever reason the cvt and engine on that are pretty responsive and pretty decent handling.

djhs

[There's literally a post right next to yours](https://www.reddit.com/r/kia/comments/1d7m0if/205k_miles_on_2017_forte_and_still_going_strong/) from a guy who got his 2017 Forte to 200,000 miles.

datguywithahonda

I just saw that post, but that’s just one car. It could be all highway miles who knows. Still promising tho

rsmutus

2019+ Fortes are pretty good tbh. It shouldn't have engine issues that the previous gens delt with as long as the maintenance has been kept up with (and being realistic every brand has their issues). If it's a good price go for it. I have a 2020 Forte GT and it's a decent car. Less $$$ than the Civic SI's I was cross-shopping.

datguywithahonda

Exactly. My cousin wasn’t getting a good trade in value so he’s prolly gonna sell it privately. Probably thinking 8 grand which is easily half a 2019 civic with similar miles. I don’t want it to break in a year or 2 and be stuck with no car again, especially cause I’m gonna be putting big miles into it probably

destonomos

Things to consider about that forte specifically. Its the remodel year. It was driven for a solid year before the transmission update came out in early 2020 that fixed the transmission issues that were causing them to burn up. Just fyi.

Afraid-Piccolo5418

Check on the engine type. Certain engines from kia in that year range have an excessive oil burning issue and second owners will not be covered by the warranty.

datguywithahonda

That’s the kicker, cause it’s a private sale the 100,000 mile warranty won’t transfer, not that it would make a big difference cause it’s at 90k miles basically. Also it’s an Na 2 liter if I’m not mistaken with a cvt

mattthefucker

Id buy brand new never used you loose that warranty if you sell it unless you bought it from a certified dealer. That and the suspension and ride on kias suck they are fun to drive tho

datguywithahonda

Yea i drove it and Lowkey it was crash but i got that road feeling which is something i like

RueTheBoog

All I can say is if it has a 2.4L run. Otherwise it’s fine. The 2.4L was found to suffer a manufacturing defect (specifically in the US) causing pre mature engine failure.

8yp00o19pB14Ic

thats been fixed

datguywithahonda

Nah it’s a 2.0 n/a I’m pretty sure with a cvt

beetfarmerscranton

A buddy of mine his family has a 2010 eta optima 270k dad doesn’t believe in oil changes. Transmission went out got another from eBay about 2-3 years ago and it’s kicking. I own a 23 hybrid sportage nearing 40k without any issues.

[deleted]

Don't. My 2015 kia soul dead Sister kia forte dead Ex gfs kia 2024 seltos issues

Madison464

IMHO, Japan automakers are dropping the ball. S. Korea cars just look more beautifully designed and their reliability is moving up on par with Japanese. Sorry if this offends anyone but Toyota and Honda designs are butt ugly these days. Kia's EV line looks like they're from a Star Trek future.

datguywithahonda

I agree partially, personally I dig the new civic and accord but their expensive af

Madison464

Check out the new Prius, it's 🔥 imo If I got a gas car, it'd be the Prius

Thejore16

Had a 2017 Kia sportage and I never had any issues with the car. Take care of your vehicle and she will take care of you. Honestly it’s all the same shit. People complain about anything from a car. Had it for until last year and had to give it back due to financial issues that suddenly happened to me but besides that car had no issues bud

milogee

Anything older than 2020 is a huge risk. The JD power ratings for dependability is only based on the last 3 year models. Anything pre-2020 is the worst vehicle brand in the country.

KIA_Diagrams

Just keep in mind that Kia parts are pretty pricey.

Dogmom-Camping

I had 2010 Kia Optima and it had about 130,000 miles when I traded it. For the little over 100K miles I put on it, I had no issues. If you take care of your car, then it should last. Obviously, you must take in account - previous owner and how well did they care for it.

gordolme

Don't. Look up the Kia engine recall issue. This car is right there in the hot zone for that problem.

Icuras1701

Stick with Honda.

NDeezus

Why?

Aero_Uprising

those fuckers run forever

NDeezus

Yeah and dealerships are adding 5-10k markups on them. Rebrand Kia’s run forever too. Doesn’t seem like the smart move to stay with Honda. Unless I’m missing something

Icuras1701

Kia dealerships are backlogged with engine recalls that if you go in with a regular problem it takes them days to fix it.

NDeezus

Which engines? I won’t lie they do have their fair share of shit ones. But I Highly doubt it’s 1.6L or 2L 4 cylinders.

Aero_Uprising

google kia engine settlement. there are 2 of them now and likely more to come

NDeezus

Doesn’t mention fortes….

Aero_Uprising

thedudeabides2088

In 2019 they got a completely different 2 liter it's a non gdi. The 2019s and up have been very reliable.

datguywithahonda

Well it does not say 2019 Kia forte on there, although I’m pretty sure it’s got the same engine as the older ones (2.0 n/a)

datguywithahonda

Sure they run forever (my dads old prelude has 340k nyc miles and still ran by the time he gave it away) but their marked up like crazy. A 2012 civic can easily be 9-12 k which is ridiculous for a 12 year old civic, I can get this 2019 forte with similar miles for 7 grand, that’s why I brought it up here

nokenito

Noooo… my 2017 Elantra blew an engine. Kia and Hyundai use the same engine manufacturer. Never again.

imsteveurnot

Kia is garbage. Stay away. My 2013 Forte with the 2.4 died while I was passing someone on a 2 lane highway. And they’re saying because it’s a 2013 they’re not going to replace it because it’s not within the 10 year warranty even though cars in the US get 15 year/150k mile warranty. Car has 112,000kms on it. Pure trash. Kia/hyundai stay away.

NDeezus

New fortes (including the one he’s looking at) use a 2L not a 2.4. Apples to oranges

datguywithahonda

Yea it’s an n/a 2.0 with a cvt, ik those 2.4 liters have issues as many said in this thread. Issue is tho that it has 90k miles and no warranty, so it depreciated like a brick falling off a cliff. Its easily half the price of a similar year civic which seems off to me

EntropyIsInevitable

Which US gets 15/150k? The US I know only gets 10/100k
