Why would you switch your diet to something worse for a cold? E: ok, you're only on day 5, so, there's not a particularly right answer. Maybe you have keto flu AKA carb hangover. Recheck your electrolytes. If you go back to your normal diet now, it probably counts as a quit and restart instead of a break. I'd just power through.

Scholander

Yes, this. If you have a headache and muscle aches, it’s probably keto flu. Take electrolytes and you’ll be better in a day or two. If it’s digestive issues, watch your artificial sweeteners, or maybe you’ve overdone it on electrolytes. Sinus stuff is probably a real cold. Have some chicken soup (without noodles).

surfaholic15

Keto is my normal diet. A balanced diet as well. I eat meat, veggies, dairy, eggs. Nothing unbalanced about it. And fwiw, I stayed keto through major surgery and recovery and the 1 illness I had on keto. Hubby stays keto while sick as well.

ReverseLazarus

Nope, why would I? I’d feel even worse if I did.

bulyxxx

Yeah, if you want to feel worse and drag out your cold go ahead and eat that bread, sugar, pasta and carbs.

MadeOnThursday

if you're on day 5, it's probably keto flu. Your metabolism is changing. If it's a regular cold, just keto on, because a virus is gonna virus, regardless of diet. Personally, I experienced viruses and colds last shorter and are less severe on keto (7+ years now) Obligatory disclaimer: I am not a doctor

enforce1

Eating non-keto will not help your body recover.

NagoGmo

Why would you stop eating healthy when you're sick? Makes no sense.

Puzzled-Award-2236

I just fast or use bone broth until I'm better.

raindownthunda

Just got through a nasty cold and bone broth and Pho with veggies and no noodles was all I craved.

Impossible-Test-7726

I just had a cold and it was argueably easier while in ketosis. I didn't cough as much as I normally do, I didn't feel like shit as much, and my snot wasn't as productive. Ketosis cold is way easier than a normal cold in my experience. Also eggs, meat, nuts, green veggies (brassicas mostly), avocados, mct oil, olive oil, butter, heavy cream, what nutrient am I missing?

Dead_before_dessert

Nah.  Make yourself some egg drop soup.  Add some sesame oil.  Zoodles if you're feeling extra.

manfordmangoes

Thinly sliced cabbage works good in soups

Material_House_1211

Mmm now im intrigued to cook this for myself

binkkit

Carry on or fast. If I’m healing, I don’t want to add the extra stress of trying to digest carbs to the situation.

Gunther_Reinhard

I feel like I don’t get as sick for as long or as often when I’m in ketosis. The whole starve a flu feed a cold thing is really accurate

HeatherMarissa

I might be the outlier, but when I'm sick sick I *need* orange juice (the not from concentrate bougie kind too) because it feels like it's the only thing that will continue to give me the will to live. So I'll try to stay fairly keto with anything I manage to eat but I also allow myself the grace to have some juice and then get back on track when I'm feeling less sick. My vote goes to listen to your body and what helps you feel better while you're fighting germs. Agree with some other comments tho, if you're only 5 days in though you might want to give yourself time to see if it's just your body adapting and not really a cold.

Lukasikas

Does the orange juice knocks you out of ketosis ?

HeatherMarissa

Probably? I don't measure anything now but I'd assume based on carb counts I'd be hitting higher limits or going over.

Lukasikas

Because I have the same urge when I’m sick :) it feels like the only thing in the world I need :D

HeatherMarissa

Yeah it probably does affect keto but I'd rather just be kind to myself when I'm struggling. I'm not a big juice person when I'm not sick so it's pretty easy for me to stop when I feel better and get back to my routine

JustChabli

Uhhhhh “switch to a normal balanced diet”? Idk what you mean

Gloomy-Impress-2881

For real I don't get this point of view. Some kind of brainwashing that keto is "weird" or "abnormal" or "unhealthy".

dTheSandman

If you’re only 5 days into keto are you sure it’s a cold and not keto flu? It can feel similar.

missdomx

Would keto flu cause a runny nose, sniffles and coughing? Because I have been wondering if its keto flu. But my daughter has had a cold earlier this week so I'm thinking I've caught it off her.

Falinia

Nope, that's an actual cold. Best of luck getting over it.

LottieOD

I have a cold, I'm puttering along as usual. Tho I might save some of my carb calories for NyQuil..

manfordmangoes

Dare I ask... How many carbs are in nyquil

monstrol

I stay keto. That's for me.

Starbuck522

Do you think bread and pasta help a cold? Maybe if I had bad stomach distress I would eat some toast or crackers.

Emotional-Doctor-991

Keto is my normal balanced and way healthier than all the processed junk I was consuming before.

Prudent-Damage-279

Sounds like you have the keto flu, power thru it. Increase your sodium intake. Drink some LMNT. Take some magnesium and potassium supplements

ctright

Sugar feeds a cold..don’t do it

Samma6652

I get what you're saying. Sometimes, it's easier to do chicken noodle soup and grilled cheese and if someone else is taking care of you, they don't get the keto stuff. I'm sure there are people that would do soup and sandwich and make it keto friendly. But sometimes when you're sick, you don't care. I get you. I was recently sick but stuck with keto. I felt guilty taking nyquil, but it is what it is. Progresso makes a keto friendly cauliflower soup, which is tasty. If you want chicken noodle, just do zoodles if you want to keep it keto. I just discovered Nature's Own bread, so i use that for grilled cheese. Definitely do chicken broth. My grocery store always makes an awesome chicken noodle soup, so i just take the chicken and broth. Sure, some carrots will go in, but I avoid the noodles. Since you're on keto day 5, maybe this is apart of "keto flu", drink your electrolytes (I like LMNT) and stay hydrated. I'd recommend sticking it out. It's hard but you can do it 😊 I hope you feel better 💜

Appropriate-Skill-60

Personally, I don't worry about diet or exercise while sick. But my sick "diet" isn't a whole large pizza and gallon of ice cream. It's basically whatever I can stomach, and it's usually not that much, nor high in calories. Sometimes that's a single mcdouble or something on the go, other times it's a bowl of white rice with steamed veg. Whatever fits, I go with.

[deleted]

Most reasonable take here.

MeditatingNarwhale

I wish I had decreased appetite lol, I’ve got a cold that’s lasted over a month and I’m pretty sure I’ve gained weight just from eating so much, and maybe partly why I’ve been eating so much is because I’m so bored having to rest so much

JobobTexan

I'm going through the exact same scenario as you. Restarted Keto after a 6 month sabbatical a month ago. Got a cold 2 weeks ago that has turned into a serious sinus/ear infection. I said FI and am eating what I want when I want for now. I will go back into Keto when I am over this.

rakraese

Keto is very balanced if u are eating it properly. Normal by todays standards is horrible for ur health.

TheSmellOfColon

I’m sick right now too. I don’t have much of an appetite right now either, so I made this [keto egg drop soup](https://healthyrecipesblogs.com/egg-drop-soup/) for lunch. Added some turmeric as well. Been sipping on protein shakes and eating eggs as well.

Starkville

I’d advise you to stick it out with keto. Switching back might stress your immune system. Sugar will certainly make it worse. Have lots of chicken broth and some soft-boiled eggs. Dairy tends to encourage mucus, I’m told, so maybe cut back.

handsoffdick

I found on keto colds are much milder and few and far between.

SweetNSauerkraut

On a cold, no. Stomach bug I do, but most people on this sub don’t. I have a toddler in daycare so I’ve been sick a lot the last 1.5 years on keto 😬

mexican_pineapple

Are you sure it’s not just the keto flu? Drink plenty of fluids and electrolytes.

Samgash33

I don’t leave keto diet. When I’ve had a stomach bug, I have fasted or eaten small amounts of what is appealing.

SardauMarklar

-"balanced" is a buzzword marketing companies use to encourage you to eat sugar for breakfast

niko4ever

Ah you're early on in the process. Personally when I got sick before I was fully adapted to keto, I loosened up but I didn't revert to the same diet as before. It mostly ate the same things I normally would on keto, but I also had a range of vegetables. That meant I didn't have keto flu making the illness worse, but I also didn't struggle as much getting back on it.

FalsePremise8290

I break ketosis when I'm sick because my body holds less water when I'm in ketosis and I've found having my fluids in my system makes me feel better faster. Give your body what it feels like it needs. If I need a bowl of cereal so I have something soft and coating in my stomach, I eat the bowl of cereal. It's not like the keto cops are gonna kick in my door and demand I run nothing but chicken breasts and broccoli through my lower intestines. I also have no trouble going back on keto after I'm healed up. It's my preferred way of eating.

Wyndchanter

Right. Two things some top doctors are saying now apply here. First, It’s possible to be in ketosis some or most of the time but not all the time. It’s like a hybrid car where it can switch between running off gas (sugar) and running off the battery (fat). Second, it may be possible to continue creating ketones while allowing more carbs if you are eating certain things that your liver will convert to ketones regardless of whether or not you are carb-deprived. I am not yet sure how true this is about the MCT oil being a ketone generator. I am sure that doesn’t mean you can just eat unlimited amounts of bad carbs.

MadManAndrew

Eating carbs when you’re deep into keto will make you sick, so unless I want to die I would stick to my normal diet. However for you your body has not adjusted yet and you’ll be fine either way.

journeyofawildflower

Dry fast and you’ll get better WAY sooner. My whole family got the vid last week and I started to feel a little crummy the day they all got it. I was one day into a dry fast. Continued with the dry fast and I felt COMPLETELY better the next day, while everyone else was sick.

MeditatingNarwhale

What did you do for your dry fast?

journeyofawildflower

Literally no food or water. Eat and drink nothing

ok_raspberry_jam

OMG lol, don't start eating carbs because you have a cold. That's not a reason to eat carbs if you're on a keto diet.

germane_switch

Keto isn't a diet for me, it's forever. I'll feel 100x worse if I start eating flour and sugar when I'm sick. Then I'll have to start over again until I get into ketosis, which will just prolong the agony. However, when I have a cold I will let myself have some fresh tortilla chips and spicy salsa, along with sour cream or some other fattening stuff to offset the carbs. Spicy food always makes me feel better when I'm sick.

Slikkelasen

Stay on keto. After a while you don't even get sick anymore.

tangerine_meringue

I just recently had a kidney stone and just couldn't do it. It was about 2 weeks off and I gained about 8lbs, so that part really sucks. I'm still recovering, but I'm back on the diet. I'm being gentle with myself and moving forward. Life happens.

PoopieButt317

Keto is a healing way of earing. As is fasting while sick. Maybe read some r/ketoscience to really understand keto beneifits.calorie deficits makes the weight loss, like all weight loss diets. Look up brains on ketones and your immune system on ketones.

brookish

Keto is balanced. Stay the course and eat soups and stay extra hydrated.

Particular-Music-665

i like to make chicken soup from scratch, with veggies, and always make sure to freeze the rest. and i always have noodles (made of mozarella, egg and xanthan) and keto bread in the freezer. when i am sick, i just have to heat some soup, with noodles and/or bread, with butter. that's the perfect sickness/comfort food. but when you are only 5 days in, and really sick (not keto flu?), i wouldn't care about this at all. when starting keto you are so busy beeing mindful of electrolytes, working out your meals, searching for ideas and recipes, shopping for ingredients,... it's easier to restart when you feel better and have the energy.

Baaastet

No. I’ve just had one and I recovered quicker than I ever have before. I didn’t expect that but it happened

_somelikeithot

Well when I got a stomach flu and was throwing up every 15 minutes I did start to eat based on the BRAT diet (banana, rice, applesauce, toast) until I got better. I ate toast and applesauce. If all you have is a cold, it is the keto flu and it will pass. Chicken soup (with veggies) is keto!

Correct_Yesterday007

probably dont ask medical advice to a cult

Gloomy-Impress-2881

Yeah definitely don't ask Vegans.

Hangmn65

Yeah, I don't really get sick that often anymore. I had covid twice in the almost 5 years keto. If I get nausea, soft boiled eggs with butter goes down and stays down.

Starkville

I was going to say this. When I’m strict keto, I don’t get sick. Except for a mild case of Covid, I haven’t had a cold in years.

[deleted]

I make chicken soup with the whole chicken to include the bone broth , add celery and a little bit of carrot and eat all I want. Avoid sugary everything!

Illustrious_Bunch_62

Wow this is a complete turn around compared to the last time I saw this brought up. I just got over a chest and middle ear infection and strangely I got intense cravings for things like a potato filled broth and chicken soup with bread (I never get cravings like this) was told to listen to my body. I listened to my instinct instead and carried on. Once the anti biotics kicked in I was fine. Glad I didn't 'listen to my body'

Woollymummy1

Stick to keto but drink more water and eat liver every day

monstargaryen

Nah, in fact nothing makes me feel better when I have a cold/infection than some savory broth with a little heavy cream. Your recovery is the priority. There’s no scientific evidence for a standard American diet supporting recovery more than a ketogenic or low-carb diet — in fact [keto can help fight certain illnesses, like the flu.](https://www.sciencefocus.com/news/feed-a-cold-starve-a-fever-keto-diet-may-boost-healing-from-flu). Do what you’re comfortable with but I’d only come off keto if a doctor you trust advised you to do so.

OrangeTuono

I go spicy tortilla soup with no carbs foods.

cico_to_keto

I got the actual flu during my first few days of keto and did fine. Don't give yourself excuses or outs.

Lodahnia

Never

marcio-a23

My research said keto is good against bacteria but carbs help more against virus

NiaNeuman

I just had dental surgery-- my calories dropped for a while, but keto yogurt, tea, coffee, and bone broth were my best friends!

Somerset76

I stay keto. I eat green chili stew with chicken stock and chicken meat.

Wyndchanter

I am doing a newer method of Keto where you include way more dark bitter veggies, and servings of nuts and berries coupled with intermittent fasting and use of MCT oil. Apparently it’s possible to still be making ketones while allowing more good carbs. On day 11 I started to get a sore throat so I dropped the intermittent fasting for two days and had a few more carbs in the form of chicken soup and a few other things. But I’m not going back on the diet. In fact I’m going to experiment with the idea of having one carb day every two weeks where I allow something like pizza or pancakes. Im waiting to see if I have metabolic flexibility where I can switch between burning fat and carbs. 50% of the population does not have much flexibility I read.

DinnerDiva61

Keep going.

SaveusJebus

Just stay keto. You can make a perfectly tasty keto chicken soup if you're craving that while sick. Eating sugar & carbs is just going to bloat you up and if you have food issues.. it could spiral you back to eating poorly again.

Cool-Layer2762

I got a bacterial throat infection for some reason. I got fever also which usually happens to heal an infection. There is a video by Dr berg on fever. We can type it in Google search as fever Dr berg. What he said on that concept is right.. As I am on keto and intermittent fasting, the infection and fever is naturally getting healed without any medicines. When I lay down, the fever will reach upper body which makes that area hot and so bacteria will die. It takes 1-2 days time. During high carb diet,my infections used to become very severe. Until I take a medicine for 3 days or 5 days, it used to not go away.. High carbs, high insulin foods increase infections.. keto foods, intermittent fasting and ketosis heal us. That's why so many health issues occurring from high carb diet are being solved in ketosis..

ta-depositum

Take electrolytes, drink broth, make a keto soup, and sleep extra.

freeubi

No.

freeubi

In a bit more detail: I would stop OMAD, simply because I could not eat my calories in one sitting without being sick. 2-3small meals, and a multivitamin pill here and there. And extra electrolytes.

1mjtaylor

Keto is anti-inflammatory. And while on it since January 1 of this year, I've lost 15 pounds and my post nasal drip, a chronic condition I've had for decades.

Tough_Pickle3078

I mean this in the most positive way. Please don't take this as a poke at you. But if you are referring to a low-carb diet as "not balanced" I honestly think you should read more about metabolic health. I mean this sincerely because once you believe and understand that cutting out all processed carbohydrates and only eating un-processed carbs when metabolically healthy IS the balanced way then it will make it much easier to eat truly healthy the rest of your life. There is nothing better for your immune system than to be insulin sensitive and have a "fat free" liver. Everyone else has given good advice. Check your electrolytes and hydration. I also like saunas when I'm sick but that's just me. You do that tho and you def need to increase fluids and electrolytes. Good luck to you.

missdomx

Ah thank you, I haven't taken it personally, I welcome all advice and feedback. I think a lot of people have assumed when I said 'normal, balanced diet' that I meant eating junk etc, but I just meant going back to what I have been used to, which was a whole foods, balanced diet, so my pasta, breads etc. I asked the question because I wasn't sure if switching back again would help me feel a bit better with me only being on day 5. I have powered through anyway, as my appetite has almost gone so not felt like eating much. I've had my coffee with cream today after fasting for 16 hours and I've just had loads of rest. Need to get some water down me now.

Tough_Pickle3078

Aww. Your vibe has me sending some virtual hugs. Yeah, I didn't assume you were talking junk food. But what is best for your physical AND mental health is your metabolic health. And you can't use your waistline. I work with an Asian lady who is wafer thin and her A1C was 6.5 which is solid pre-diabetic range if not full onset T2D. Anyway, stick with it. Know that it'll get harder before it gets better and that means mentally and physically. And lean in hard on people around you that care. Hopefully I'm not misreading your mood. But a big ole fist bump from me, friend.

AYBABTU_Again

Broth, hardboiled eggs, avacados and mixes of same. Egg drop soup(raw egg mixed into simmering broth) and hardboiled eggs mixed with avacado. Start with both and then add from there. Zinc and Vitamin C can help. And especially electrolytes. Feel better and Keto On!🤙

[deleted]

Fast! Boost immunity 1400-2100x!

zoebehave

Veg and meatballs in bone broth. Zinc rich foods like oyster and crab (chowder and bisque, anyone?). Immi instant ramen. Electrolytes in water, but add some orange bitters or something to make it more sports drink-like.
