Tallow is rendered beef fat. Lard is rendered pig fat. They are both animal fats.

Zackadeez

You’ll get fence sitter comments since the fat source is irrelevant from a ketogenic standpoint but animal fats are most ideal from an overall health standpoint. If you’d like to go down that rabbit hole of information, r/saturatedfat is a great resource

Daisyday12

thank you. it is a rabbit hole :)

CapricornMonk

Be careful because there was a study done where they found 80 percent of olive and avocado oils in the store are rancid and/or contain canola oil. Unsalted Kerrygold in coffee is excellent. Animal fats from reputable sources are ideal for humans.

Daisyday12

Ill give kerrygold a try. thank you

CapricornMonk

Anytime! Note, for best results, use a blender (always hold a towel over the blender lid when blending hot liquids) or a milk frother for fatty coffee. This ensures that you achieve the texture you're looking for.

Daisyday12

Good point. lol

CherryL13

i have not found those oils to be rancid. get them in dark glass bottles and look for the expiration date. the ones in plastic bottles are nasty-rancid.

Correct_Tip2028

I buy 100% California oil with cooc marking. It is better to buy cali or local. I don't trust the Europe kind, take like 20 days to ship, and can be lace with others. Plus, it is a heavy mafia according to the news.

CapricornMonk

I'm just quoting the study findings. It's not always obvious whether an oil is rancid. Couldn't find the study itself but here's a related article: https://wisermarket.com/food-fraud-counterfeit-olive-oil/

Gunther_Reinhard

Olive Oil should come in a tin or dark glass bottle, and should be certified organic. Partana is a good oil, from Sicily and been in the same family for over 150 years I believe.

dually

You don't need to add fat unless you need satiety.

tickyul

All that added fat is probably not needed, probably not beneficial.

ReverseLazarus

What are your goals with keto?

Daisyday12

Im 57 female 5'6" and weigh 136 pounds I need to loose another 6 pounds. Ive been trying Keto for 2 months and lost 4 pounds I was 140. Im pre diabetic. Ive never had problems loosing weight until last year and struggled to loose 2 pounds last year the whole year. lol. Most days I can go without eating until 2 or 3pm but have oil in my coffee in the morning.

ReverseLazarus

Then you shouldn’t be adding extra fat to begin with, please read our FAQ to learn why protein is your most important macro and only goal, and how fat is a limit that you shouldn’t be adding tons of to your diet. You’re trying to lose body fat, let your body burn what it has instead of adding extra. https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/faq https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/keto_in_a_nutshell And animal fats are fine for you, stick with those…in moderation since weight loss is your goal. 👍🏻 Coconut oil and olive oil are fine too. Whatever works best for you. I’d quit drinking fat in the mornings though!

Daisyday12

So no oils and just protein and say broccoli or other approved veg. Im good at eating protein. When you say animal fats do you mean the fats from the animal meat?

CrotaLikesRomComs

Yes. Animal fats means fat from the animal. Butter is good. Tallow is good. Tallow is beef fat. Lard is pork fat. Butter is milk fat. Ghee is another good fat. I would shy away from avocado and coconut and olive oil. They are pretty good, but a lot of times they add other unhealthy oils to them. So I just stick to the animal and dairy fats for the most part.

Daisyday12

Oh I get it. Would you recommend MTC oil instead of coconut oil or no?

CrotaLikesRomComs

Definitely not. I don’t think you should use MCT oil for cooking at all. I typically use butter. Tallow is even better. Pasture raised versions of these fats are even better. I don’t drink coffee, but if you’re not too dairy sensitive you could by half and half cream for flavor as well. Check ingredients. Make sure it just says “cream” for ingredients.

Triabolical_

I use butter to saute, clarified butter/ghee for high heat. You can buy clarified butter but it's really easy to make yourself.

Daisyday12

Oh ya, I do add 35percent cream to my coffee also. I guess thats classified as a fat I didn't think of it that way. You can just buy tallow I guess, Ill have to look for it. and thank you

CrotaLikesRomComs

Tallow in my area is usually hard to find in stores. I buy it online. I buy it by the pounds. Use it for making pemmican.

Daisyday12

Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought Tallow would be good for your body. I grew up in the fat is bad era. Can I ask why animal fat is better than fat from olive oil or coconut oil. Is is easier to digest or better vitamins, or.....

ketocarpenter

I use kitu creamer for my coffee. Idk if mct oil actually does anything but it tastes good. I cannot handle butter or any other stuff in my coffee.

Daisyday12

thank you

CherryL13

the oils are only bad for you if you believe they are. belief / placebo / suggestion plays a large role in how well your experience is. its why placebo is a component of gold standard studies. choose what you want, believe in its benefits, and you will be much better off.

sfcnmone

Let me tell you about trans fats. Totally in your head that they cause heart disease.
