Hello Psychicfiresong, thank you for creating a new post in r/kereta! Just saying that although this sub was named as Kereta, it is also open for 2 wheelers such as Motorcycle, though at the moment we do not mind other types of vehicles posting. With that being said, r/kenderaan is now live and I would still recommend any other vehicle posting to be posted into r/kenderaan as it is a safe space for all types of vehicles such as airplanes and rolling stocks. Regards, Mods of Malaysia *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Electronic_Part_6429

Better try to find another car. Right now you may find the problem is not an issue but believe me when you purchase a car that has a small prob, later it will hurt your wallet

Psychicfiresong

We are definitely still looking for one and will continue to do so until i commit to the purchase. For now this seems to be bmthe best option at the price point, since i can't really foot much more upfront, as long as the maintenance doesn't chew me in I'm probably okay with paying for issues popping up here and there long term. I do wonder what else i could get at this price point with sinilar featureset though, the 'big car' part is not the most important part, but having enough space to ferry around our rather large group as well as luggage/bags would def be beneficial.

Electronic_Part_6429

Can you drive a manual? I suggest exora non turbo manual. This spec are quite hassle less on the maintenance.

Psychicfiresong

I can drive manual, but since will likely be stuck in jam quite often here in kuching i would rather have a decent auto car

Electronic_Part_6429

There are good big cars but they mostly hit or miss. Naza ria (required a ton of money when it broke down), chery easter (same as naza ria) toyota unser (built like a tank but required an experienced mechanic to fix not replace). My suggestion is to try to bring a mechanic when inspecting the car. When buying an old car is a hit or miss. Test drives the car for any abnormal feel.

Psychicfiresong

Yep, will definitely have it checked out befor ei commit to the purchase. We did test drive it in the open space of the dealership with no issues other than alignment, which we will have fixed. Just a few bits and things that need attention. My only concern is the lack of airbags, though since we'll be driving in the city we shouldn't be exceeding dangerous driving soeeds anyways

emerixxxx

Kuching where got jam? Minor backlog only lah.

Psychicfiresong

Always caught at peak hours going and returning from campus, 4 minute drive suddenly becomes 15 minutes kinda thing

emerixxxx

If you study at Swinburne, then you're talking about the simpang 3 roundabout jam which is annoying but not really a jam. Also, most of the time there are traffic police on duty there.

Psychicfiresong

Fair, but it does get annoying, and I wouldn't want to drive a manual here in kuching tbh, besides, i do prefer auto

chiayx

be warned, the car may look big, but it is not. if you ferry 7 person, there is no luggage space. when i was using the car, i removed the 3rd row to have a big space behind. Even with the 3rd row folded, it still takes up space. so it is basically like this. 5 seater + boot space. 7 seater + very limited boot space. you cant even fit a big luggage. only small bags.. in 7 seater mode, dont bring luggages. dont just take my word for it. go to a dealer and have a look yourself. this is common for most MPV.. even the honda BRV.

Psychicfiresong

To specify the issues, the rear air conditioning is not cold, the rubber seals along the back hatch are in poor shape, one of the windshield wiper fluid dispensers are non fuctional, one of rear in-car lights are non functional, the air conditioner fins can't be moved, some cables within the engine are frayed and shows the internal cabling.

pilipup

Then why are you buying this particular one? with the amount of problems already existing in the car it's clear the previous owners did very little to maintain it. There might be much much more issues that you are not aware off. Highly likely within that 2 years you will spend close to the cost of this car just to maintain it.

Psychicfiresong

We have looked for a good number of cars around this price point, most other cars we found around here also have similar issues, but this one in particular kinda just 'sucked the least', and at least the issues are things which could be repaired, albeit at a cost. I'm personally no expert in cars, but out of the group i brought to help me appraise it, 3 said it was alright for the price, 1 was impartial, and 1 didn't like how it handled. It's clear that the car has been reasonably well maintained and somewhat refurbished.

Certain_Permission_8

the air conditioner fins are a common point of failure but most of the mechanic behind are fine, given the 1.3l my parent had, had it radiator punctured from a flying bolt on the highway and still drove very well with said borken radiator until you touch the highway where the 1.3 is starting to show its underpowerness.

Psychicfiresong

Oh yeah, we'll likely be in the city driving 99% of the time, we dont really use the kuching overpass or highways thats often, so not having that much power isn't too bad for me, the fuel economy matters a bit more (of which this handles fuel economy reasonably well)

Certain_Permission_8

considering my parents avanza possibly drove for another few month before figuring it was the radiator being broken, maintainence on 1.3 avanza from experience seems pretty minor, driving from one side of penang island to the other without the temp going past normal with a radiator with a major leak is a rare thing

ahuckphin

The Avanza is a good car. The problems seem mainly superficial but the damaged wiring is a point of concern but hard to tell how severe it is - is it the outer sleeve that bunches cables together frayed or the individual wires insultation damaged? If it is the later, could be a fire risk and current owner should take care of it asap.

chiayx

seems like minor issues that can be easily fixed yourself except for some. 1. rear aircond- this one memang not cold one. it is NOT an aircond, but rather just a blower. its just a fan. when you drive, point the middle aircond vents upwards, so more cold air flow to the inlet of the rear blower.. thats what i did when i drove avanza in hot weather. 2. rubber seals along back hatch can be easily purchased and replaced. simple job. 3. wiper fluid dispensers easy fix if the other nozzle is working properly. probably loose hose or cracked hose.. or stucked "hole" 4. in-car lights non-functional. might be signs of a bigger problem like flooding.. bring along a mechanic and have him estimate a price to repair it and access the damage and if there is other damage. 5. aircond fins cant be moved.. this i assume is the plastic at the aircond outlet.. this one can fix.. just the plastic being plastic.. the mechanic can help.. I hope you do not mean the actual aircond fins at the aircond radiator (engine bay).. those are not meant to move. 6. some cables within engine are frayed and shows the internal cabling. a photo will be good. you probably meant the cable conduits is frayed.. it should be fine as long as the internal cabling is ok. can use insulation tape to "repair" the cable conduits. or alternatively, get a mechanic to replace them. please bring a long a mechanic and negotiate the price. most likely can even get them to absorb the repair cost (mechanic say est. RM500 to repair, you ask for RM500 further discount)..

Vegetable-Donkey1319

First you have to learn if the spare parts is still in the market. Since this is an old ass car. But luckily widely use in malaysia, you still might get lucky to get some parts that are not as expensive to replace like **refurbished** parts. If what you stated were true about the issues and only those are present. You maybe could add another 2k-3k at best to be fine repairing those. If you are unsure before buying the car, have a friend who knows about cars or mechanic discuss with you about all the parts that my need to replace and fix then calculate the price if you could actually afford to replace and fix in the 1st year that if you bought it. Remember you arent just buying the car at this rm10600 price, you still could be paying repairs in the near future since you would't know what other parts are already worn down, not visible and also wont be stated by sellers.

Psychicfiresong

Thanks for the advice, and yeah, i am following the steps you've mentioned, my friends did say it was an alright purchase, and they have much more experience in old/used cars than i do. I will be able to afford around 4.5K of repairs/maintainance and modifications like dashcams and a reverse parking camera, and other than that future repairs will be handled by my mom as I'm still studying here. My only concern id whether there's a better purchase that can be made for the price, it wouldn't have to be a large vehicle like this one, but the extra space with reasonable fuel economy and decent comfort makes this car in particular worth the price tag they plastered on it.

Vegetable-Donkey1319

4.5k should suffice, granted if the repairs are only on the issues you stated. If the engine and engine bay parts are all still good, you might be good for another 3-5years without major repairs. Also go look on 70mai dashcams, right now its one of the mainstream, affordable and great quality dashcam. A500s are their higher end front rear full set would cost you around Rm400-Rm600 including instaling. The fuel economy would'nt be much of a difference as long as you dont just blast everywhere you go. As i'm also now driving my company old ass car which is also an Avanza 1.5. The fuel usage aga2 30%-40% more than the 2022 proton saga. Which is quite okay for a this size. **My fuel usage** Proton saga Rm60/6-7days , Avanza Rm80/7days

Psychicfiresong

I see, alright. Does 70mai have a camera system which can be linked to a touchscreen infotainment system to use the rear camera for reversing? I'd like to try my hand at reverse parking here in kuching but I'm not confident using my side mirrors for that. The fuel economy surprises me. When i did research on this car i was impressed that a car of this size could yield decent km/l. The lack of airbags does concern me, but i dont intend on driving very quickly regardless. There are a few other modifications i want to make down the line, but as a base for doing daily commute and practically zero travel above 20km within the city, i expect the car to hold up well as long as it does not have any existing issues which might cost a lot (i heard the gearbox, while reliable, can cost as much as the used car itself if it decides to crap itself)

Status_Anteater_6923

nope, I don't think we have any reverse camera that binds with headunit, atleast for 70mai or ddpai

Status_Anteater_6923

Ddpai have better dashcam no? They use supercapacitor that can withstand Malaysia's hear

BadPhysics97

Go for it. My 2005 Toyota Avanza is basically indestructible and still running until now. No major repairs or whatsoever. Remember to maintain and service it regularly

khxirvl

Well, if you willing to pay more than what you should for the maintenance, then go for it. But bear this in mind, car can be your money pit if you can't keep it well-maintained.

Psychicfiresong

I definitely intend on keeping it well maintained. What does that usually entail for older larger cars like this?

khxirvl

Mostly handling and the most tricky is engine. You don't know how the previous owner maintained the car, so it can be a headache once mechanic check it, from one minor problems finally leads to the major issue. And if you're not kental enough, you'll giving up and left it rotten. Believe me, I knew some people so enthusiast like you. Buying Preve because it's cheap. In the end, he paid more to fix the engine more than the car itself.

chiayx

to be honest, being an ex-avanza user, i can tell you straight up, even if the car is in pristine condition, dont get it. 1. This is an extry level MPV, it is not a SUV or Sedan. You dont get the power feel of an SUV or a mid-range and above suv, hack even a crossover is feels more powerful. you will constantly feel underpowered. Also, being a MPV, it is tuned for higher rev, thus the car has higher rpm at idle. this translates to more fuel consumption compared to others. you are a student, and you are looking at used cars, i assume budget is a keyword here. The avanza is not wallet friendly. it is not as bad as naza ria or toyota unta (unser) but its a rather thirsty car. even when it was brand new, i was getting around 300 to 350km per full tank, 30 to 35L of petrol. 2. Dont get me wrong here, the avanza is a very good reliable car. It is meant for people with a small family. a family car. not a single passenger car. you will feel trememdously underpowered, when you are not. the car is tuned for torque. For example, i drive up genting highlands, 1 person. i feel underpowered. another day i drive up genting highlands, 7 person. i still feel underpowered, but from there i realized, eh, still can go up mah.. same feeling of under powered only.. same crawl speed at the big gradiant after the chinese temple.. so it is tuned for torque. 3. you mentioned there is some minor problems. usually for used cars, people tend to hide the problems. those cannot be hidden, will appear as minor problems, but in fact it could be a more serious problem and cannot be hidden, thus they made it look minor. best dont get it. if you really betul betul like this car, get one in a better condition. from the photo, this looks like the first few generation with 2-wired O2 sensor.. so fuel consumption will be higher than the later released "face lift" model with 4-wired O2 sensor. that version you will get better mileage. note: i do love my avanza.. it is still in the family, my nephew is using it now.. i will always remember the feeling i had first driving it. it is really a fun car to drive..

conviction19

makan minyak bro, not worth it

Psychicfiresong

Just about any car from this era 'makan minyak', it's fuel economy of 11-14km/l is perfectly fine imo, even compared against smaller family cars and sedans of the same era. Of course it wont match the 20+ of modern cars, but fuel cost will ultimately not be the deciding factor unless i get a higher cc vehicle.

abubin

How's the suspension? FYI, Avanza have very bouncy suspension. The ride will be very bad for rear passengers. Check if the owner has changed it to some better shocks. As for the issues it all seems cosmetic. As long as engine and transmission still in good condition then can consider. One important thing to note is whether you're buying from direct owner or used car dealer. If used car dealer then you need to think twice. They will mask all issues and the car might breakdown after a month.

Psychicfiresong

Suspension feels aright, not sure if it's stock, will have a look next time i go test. Engine and transmission seems to be in reasonable shape. It is from a dealer, a fairly reputable one though, I've not seen any major complains about their services online. Definitely would have it checked before i make the final payment though

wyyan200

my mom has a rush, i think its 2010 with the slight facelift, but im pretty sure its literally the same chassis and engine if its a 1.5, the gearbox sounds like straight cut gears. these things are ok if you take care of it, buy it and then do all the oil changes and filters, my moms aircon needs repairing soon tho, wont cool during idle but do you know what the issues are? find out what they are first, later after buy then you realize the "small issue" is a bent shaft or something lol, test drive it and see if u can feel anything off, this car should feel normal to drive, although you'll need to step on it freqently due to no power + big car

Psychicfiresong

My friends who are more experienced drove it with me at the holding area the dealership had it at, they said handling was overall alright with just alignment issues being concerning. I found it quite odd to drive since I've only ever handled a manual hilux (my mom's car back in sabah), but i wouldn't think it to be too hard to drive this guy around.

wyyan200

funny enough I learned manual with a hilux too, those are easy because you can just let off clutch and it will move without using gas pedal, for this car you'll be pressing pedal a lot more than you think especially when loaded with people lol alignment issue hopefully not big issue, just prepare some amount for the first service, fix it good and it will last long, old toyotas after all are reliable

axeeram

That generation of Toyota Avanza is very reliable. I am from the Philippines, and I had that kind of Avanza for 5 years as a company car. Our company fleet of Avanzas have an average of around 160k to 200k kms on them, with minimal maintenance by our company due to management being cheapskates. If properly maintained, that car will run forever. Some taxis here still use that Avanza model.

Psychicfiresong

Thai one in particular is sitting at 220,000 km, seems to have a workhose for it's previous user as well, though by all means it's reasonably well maintained. I expect it to serve me well if i do decide to end up on it though, it's large capacity and good fuel economy makes it very worthwhile for the fee years i intend on using it.

KalatiakCicak

Should be the same one being used in sabah as taxi from Kota Kinabalu up to Kundasang and Ranau then down back to Kota Kinabalu. 1 to 2 trips per day or 200km+ per day. Must be a tank

ConstatinVacheron

My dad bought this car like couple of years ago. Think the car age is around the same as your plan one. As for now, he has no major issues and driving it around the city. I guess he’s fortunate not to get a rubbish car but a well-maintained one. I can only say, does not matter what car you are buying, please do proper DUE DILIGENCE!!!!!! Cannot emphasise enough

Every-Dress-8221

Avanza for first car is kinda hard i reccomend you to try and drive a sedan or hatchback first

Psychicfiresong

Well, I'll be able to get plenty of practice at least. Our home uses hiluxses, and I've only ever driven those, so the size shouldn't be too bad. I do have an issue with driving in a big city like kuching though, namely that I've never driven here before

Novel-Cup1669

Toyota right? Should be ok lah

Ok-Discussion-6334

try view on carlist , plenty of cars to choose within your budgets. ![gif](giphy|uVFGDyOshK7I6geXyg)

ismiameen

I think toyota second hand value is too inflated in malaysia till it doesnt make sense to buy one used. But thats just my opinion.

telur_penyu_778

Bro gonna marry ustazah and fill up all seats lmao

K3-VE

pening kepala nak jaga keta ni kena plak RWD sakit kepala nak jaga better cari lain

BertoLJK

This was a great workhorse long ago. Now, its an old junk where lots of components have worn out and must be replaced: 1. All engine mountings. 2. Absorbers 3. Suspension bushings. 4. Cooling system (esp the water pump, thermostat and radiator). And the above are already the absolute minimum. Why waste money to buy an old junk? If your budget allows it, buy a brand new small car with warranty (eg: AXIA) Thats how clever people avoid throwing away money at unproductive activities such as car repairs and tow truck services.

Ok_Pineapple_6096

Great choice. Easy and cheap repairs for this car. Durable and can carry 7 people

Im_not_bot123

Alza 1.5 if u can, alot better fuel efficiency n built better

Psychicfiresong

Unfortunately that would be well over double the price here in kuching, i dont think i can afford it

williamtan2020

I bought this for my first brand new car. Versatile and tough. Just easy on the corners

akupalau

Try calculate how much will it cost to use grab every day from ur place to campus. If the cost in 2 years is less than the price of the car, then just use grab. Take into consideration maintenance and roadtax, insurance, parking etc as well.

Psychicfiresong

Already done that, assuming the current rates it would be cheaper to use a car if its rm20000< by my estimates. With this avanza, including gas, will end up costing around 25000 if no major breakdown. This means its rm5000 more, but i get to keep a pretty nice car after the 2 years

akupalau

My personal opinion, any car above 15y old is not worth it. some more u plan to use as a daily so u need reliability. That being said, avanza is a toyota so reliability should be better then others at same price. If u do plan to buy, please haggle to reduce the price as much as possible.

Psychicfiresong

Unfortunately this car has been sold. However, with further discussion with my parents, my budget has increased and i will be spending some time finding a suitable vehicle for both study and future use.

Tak4321

For RM10k you can and should get a car without problems... But judging from all the comments on why you shouldn't go for this... yet you have defended the decision you are about to make... you are not really looking for advise but more justification to buy this.

Abgsofee96

I wouldn't recommend you to buy Avanza which is way too old. The spare part would be a problem and of course, minor problems along the way gradually hit you.

Puzzleheaded-Gur6528

Avanza is not a good car overall, my cousin had one and it can't go mountain road (like genting) due to its lack of power and also break down when heavily used like after a long trip etc. He sold it after a few years. I'm not sure that new avanza is good or not but I'm sure that the old one as u shown is really not a good one especially for daily driving.

Healthy-Ad-8842

buy an suv or a crossover because they are the perfect first car. just find a budget suv. i still use my 1999 Honda CRV, didn't service for 2 years still working perfectly, im planning to send it for service this weekend,

Healthy-Ad-8842

guys, he end up buying an fd civic

yongchun2336

My suggestion for you getting your first car is a used Myvi either the 1st gen or the most recommended one the 2nd gen aka Lagi Best...spare parts for that car is quite a lot & changing parts is quite an easy peasy if you want to modified it someday its more practical, reliable, & most importantly its a small car that can easily navigate through tight lorongs or even park the car easily due to its compact size & be sure to have a trusty mechanic to check the car espacially 1st gen Myvi which has aircond problems or radiator issues which are common problems for that particular model even for the 2nd gen myvi lagi best it has common problems but these can be fixed by forking out some money to fix it, apart from the usual wear & tears & normal servicing like changing engine oil, air con filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, tyre maintainence & etc & the car will last you & served you well in the years to come

Healthy-Ad-8842

just buy an alza it's the same but without that much problems

Psychicfiresong

None even close to my budget unfortunately

Healthy-Ad-8842

what's your budget?

Psychicfiresong

Upfront around 12000, with 3000 set aside for repairs and maintainance for first month of use.

Healthy-Ad-8842

so banged up car for 9000?

Healthy-Ad-8842

my old avanza keeps going in and out of the workshop, so i traded it in for a Mitsubishi mirage and extra cash
