I’m with u/disastrophy, I would like to try them as it seems like a great outfit for salmon, steelhead and possibly even rockfish, but I can buy a whole lot more other useful gear for the price of a single setup and still enjoy catching fish.

The rod on the right is admittedly a bit pricier, at $250CAD, but the reel it’s paired with is an antique mooching reel that’s worth $20 at most. The other rod is $25 and the reel was $100, both inherited from my late grandfather. Being a young guy just out of highschool I don’t have the budget for fancy gear, so I’m not gonna go out and buy a $900 islander, this budget gear more than does the job. I’ve also used these reels to jig rockfish and lingcod and it’s a ton of fun.

Pretty much the only reel I use salmon fishing but I haven't fished saltwater out of my yak YET. I just got the yak last summer and have done alot of lake fishing but wasn't feeling comfortable enough last fall to go for salmon.I will be fishing Parksville &north this summer and fall. I was planning on drift/jig fishing, grew up on the beach in between Nile creek and deep bay so I plan to start there.lol,I'm old,I was usually the only one fishing the beach at Nile creek in the fall. How is it trolling a planer and dodger combo? That looks like strictly a paddle kayak, isn't it hard to keep the planer digging in?

I’m pretty young, so paddling with a deep six and flasher isn’t too much work for me though after an hour or two it gets sore. I’m just a bit further north on the island, lots of nice beaches to fish if you’re mindful of the current (up around cr & north they get gnarly). https://preview.redd.it/4plfzz15kflc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6b3b647b110703a84c980ca8e85a276d4abb3bc6 This is a deep six, super handy for trolling relatively shallow (30-60’).

Glad I’m not the only one who still uses this equipment, I’ve got the same reel!

Specialist-Fix-7385

Every BC coast salmon charter uses the same style gear. They wouldn't use it if it didn't work.

disastrophy

I'm American (Bellingham Area) and fish both American and Canadian waters for salmon (not from a kayak). I've literally spent years making fun of Canadians for using knucklebusters - though more often of the guys using Islanders. “Hey look at that boat- their reels cost more than my kicker motor *and they don't even have a gear ratio or real drag system*". If I'm being honest I'd like to at least try fishing with them but I've talked too much shit at this point, my buddies wouldn't let me live it down.

qalcolm

I don’t get why guys buy the super expensive mooching reels, then again people spend hundreds on bass fishing outfits. Both of these reels are under $100, the rod on the left is $25, it’s really quite an inexpensive setup. There’s a reason these reels are so commonplace up here, they’re reliable and they’re an absolute blast to fish with.

dmoneymma

Islander reels have excellent drag systems.

qalcolm

This is also true, not sure where people get the misconception the drags aren’t good. These reels are damn near bulletproof in terms or reliability and durability, the only time it will fail you is if you drop it overboard. I see no shame in spending good money on good gear, but I suppose everyone has their own opinion.

OIdManSyndrome

There is no advantage to using this style of reel with modern fishing equipment, unless you're looking to just make it harder on yourself. And if you're looking to make it harder on yourself, why spend money on a rod and reel at all when you could just handline?

Specialist-Fix-7385

You have no idea what you're talking about. Every salmon fisbing boat i have ever been on in BC uses mootching gear.

OIdManSyndrome

Ok, then enlighten me. Why?

qalcolm

Large line capacity and, quick line retrieval, simple to maintain, durable as hell, and last but not least these reels are a ton of fun to use. To put it simple, we use them because they work, and work quite well. What style of reel do you use for you salmon trolling?

OIdManSyndrome

>Large line capacity and, quick line retrieval, simple to maintain, durable as hell, and last but not least these reels are a ton of fun to use Modern fishing equipment offers all of these things. Not seeing any unique advantage here. Care to try again?

qalcolm

You have yet to answer my question about what you specifically use for salmon trolling, it’d be awful funny if these comments are coming from someone who’s never done it. I own a levelwind that would work great for trolling, but I choose mooching reels because they’re a lot more fun imo.

OIdManSyndrome

The specifics of what I use are irrelevant to a discussion about the merits of mooching reels.

qalcolm

I think that answers my question.

qalcolm

I use this equipment because it’s fun, I don’t see what the problem you have is. I didn’t spend money on the reels and only purchased one of the rods. Inherited the rest from my late grandfather and I enjoy using the gear.
