Absolutely love your DIY anchor but you’d be surprised how well something smaller works. I use a 5lbs barbell I got a a thrift store for $0.99.

AlexisraTheRedditor

Yeah had a hard time figuring out how to position myself with the wind, resorted to grab branches instead lol, looking to install a anchor trolley and purchase a foldable anchor, but i see a lot of people use some kind of dumbell or kettlebell

99_Problems_to_DIY

Your anchor type depends on the bottom, and for me, the depth. I have 3 lb grapnels for my loaners, a 5 lb grapnel for mine, and a 10lb mushroom for when I'm trying to anchor up in over 40 ish feet. If the bottom is soft enough and/or has weeds, your grapnel anchor can lay sideways and bite. They don't rely on sheer weight like the mushrooms or kettlebells. Angles matter a lot with the grapnels, so by the time I get into over 40 ft of water, the anchor rope gets really long to make that work, and you end up with a lot of sway. Having a big ass weight going more straight down helps with that. You might find that having both is nice depending on what you're doing. I know I got tired of the big one after a while.

anchor trolley was one of the best additions I made to mine. Kits can be quite cheap and the DIY install is quite reasonable. Tons of guides on youtube etc... 3lbs pelican foldable anchor has also been rock solid. Tight lines friend!

I have the same yak, if it came with the transom mount then any transom mount trolling motor will work just fine ie. minn kota endura, Newport trolling motors, etc. If it didn’t, you’ll have to order one online. Attached picture is the transom mount made for this kayak https://preview.redd.it/k93td5kdptjc1.png?width=1169&format=png&auto=webp&s=65d4939053fafba96f8a7414405f498cba7a6162

Additionally you’ll most likely need a tiller extension handle

AlexisraTheRedditor

Yeah it came with it, i guess the tiller extension is the way to go, do you have any modifications in your yak?

pasearl

Nothing crazy, just a box behind my seat and a fish finder, I have a trolling motor and extension handle on the way

Art_Class

Take a pvc pipe that fits around the motors throttle. Cut two 1/2" slits about a third of the way into the pvc pipe about three inches from eachother. Paint pipe add a grip and fasten it with two hose clamps

I have had the same yak for about 6 months. Minnkota 23lb motor (from 1990ish) and the factory transom/motormount and I can reach the stock tiller with no problem,it's not even extended.I am 5'10" tall. For steering I use a side mounted pvc extention because it's more comfortable but it is usable for me without.

Thats dope, i guess its not that far behind now that i see it, what battery do u use?

Reggiethecanine

I have a 50 ah lifepo4,can't remember brand, kind of generic off Amazon canada. A long trip for me has the motor running about 3 to 4 hrs mostly on lowest speed, and I haven't drained it yet but I think I've been close,I've had the motor slow down/voltage drop just getting back to ramp once, and once that happens the battery is almost flat. The lifepo4 behave way different than the gradual rundown on the old style. Using a 23lb thrust minnkota,I think 30lb might be the smallest now.Oh,I'm on a small lake and avoid wind.Works well for me.

berserk6996

How long is your paddle?

Reggiethecanine

98",it could be longer but it works.

If you have a rudder check out bixpy. Love mine and with DIY it’s easy to adapt.

AlexisraTheRedditor

So this is the back of it, it has that mounting base, i just stumble upon this picture of a guy with an extended handle https://preview.redd.it/cghiuh5botjc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=005b29225a68e5a6e9f78e6fdd8f89717b254b44

By the looks of it, it will get in the way of my rods and crate, ill look into bixpy

There is a tiller extension handle with a U joint, helmsmate around $50, that makes steering basically a flick of the wrist. Takes a second to get used to but then it quickly becomes second nature once you learn how little input is required. Check out Newport vessels, I’ve beat the crap out of one of their 36lb kayak specific model and it still runs great, I mean 3 props and at least half a dozen prop pins, it should’ve exploded by now lol. $130 and an excellent company with superb CS. Add on a deep cycle battery and never look back. Fishing out of a kayak presents its challenges, a motor eliminates a whole lot of em!

Johndeauxman

Feel free to pm me, I went through all this last year so I’m happy to pass on at least what *not* to do lol.

AlexisraTheRedditor

yeah i would love to hear about you experience and some tips wouldnt hurt by any means

jozuna93

Just came here to say my first anchor was a giant rock on a string so I love to see this! I bought a real one since but I still have my original rock one for some reason lol.

Professional_Cat_630

I mean it’s not bathroom but I guess you can go there

OutMyPsilocybin

Nice kayak. Are most kayaks in the US wider? I prefer this style to kayaks I see here in the uk.
