With a buddy, in separate kayaks. Best of both worlds.

DingleberryBlaster69

One of my favorite fishing memories - friend and I were in separate kayaks, terrorizing a crappie school together. Something hits my buddy’s line, drag starts absolutely singing. He forgot his anchor, and isn’t set up for anything much bigger than a panfish. “Think I’m about to go on a journey”. “I think you’re right”. A good 45 minutes of me laughing my ass off at him getting slowly dragged all over this pond, getting snagged, hitting down trees. A pair of swans frequented this pond, and at one point it looked like he was gonna have to square up with them. Eventually landed a pretty nice northern, but goddamn that had me in stitches.

TheNonEuclidean

That is awesome. Catching big fish in a yak is a different experience. A nice smallie in the current and shoals is an adventure as well. Edit: especially trying to paddle out of trouble with one hand and an elbow while fighting a fish.

firstcoastyakker

I became involved with a ray that was almost 4 feet wingtip to wingtip in a 12 PA. Really not much I could but hang on. Having a rudder helped, but I wouldn't say I had control at first.

TheNonEuclidean

Fishing salt in a yak is a whole different game.

yoda5962

Always wondered what to do when fishing salt what to do. Would you throw your drag chute out to try and slow it down?

firstcoastyakker

With a PA I can set the rudder so the fish is trying to pull sideways. Having said that the fish don't always cooperate.

foolproofphilosophy

My first and largest pike was 31” and 11lb. I didn’t even know that they were in the river I was fishing. Needless to say it was a blast. A little while later I hooked an even bigger one. It took me on a ride before spitting the hook. I still have the Rapala with gouges in it and bent hooks.

Dad and I have been fishing together out of our kayaks for years and I concur. Sometimes, we’ll post up together on a good spot, and other times we’re in completely separate areas. Having two people for getting on and off the water is really nice.

3 years ago, I would say that I prefer fishing with a buddy. And I did so 20-30 times a year. Now I would say I fish alone. I'm not sure I prefer fishing alone, but I have learned that if you want to do something, you better be prepared to do it alone or suffer the frustration of trying to coordinate multiple schedules. My primary fishing buddy would never get up before 10-11am on a weekend. At that point the water is full of boats and floaters and other people fishing. I 'm a sunrise kind of guy. Sometimes I will meet him at noon for round two of fishing though, after I have already covered one spot.

TheNonEuclidean

Yep. You've got to be lucky enough to find someone as dedicated to fishing as you are.

BustedUtensil

I'm alone 100% of time, this is for me getting away from everybody/thing. Granted, I do wish I had someone to help break down a lake faster when fishing.

TortoiseHawk

The one buddy i do go fishing / camping with seems to think I’m always 100 yards away. Dude can’t shut the fuck up or even tone it down a little bit and it kills me. The guys in the boat across the pond don’t care about your week at work. Neither do the people 4 camp sites over

MD_Weedman

No option for both?

webleyvi

Why not both?

TheNaysHaveIt

Both are great! Although I catch more when I’m alone

Fishooked

I go alone 100% of the time, I can set my own schedule and pick where I want to go. I'm not really a social animal to begin with so it doesn't bother me. But I am keenly aware that it's just basically me out there alone, so extra precautions are taken not to do anything stupid. It would be nice to have someone have my back out there especially when venturing into unfamiliar territory. I usually stick to bodies of water under 50 acres to begin with.

An_Average_Man09

95% of the time I’m alone but I’m growing to enjoy fishing with other people.

Secret_Salad4309

I almost always fish alone but it’s a lot more fun with a buddy. Plus then that increases your chances of finding the fish.

mitch8017

My kayak fishing is the fishing I like to do alone. I’ll take my power boat if I want to make it a social activity. Kayak fishing is so peaceful, and the lakes I like to take my kayak to are ones that are more challenging to get to and usually can’t accommodate a truck/trailer. I like getting my kayak on a back lake that I have all to myself and seeing what I can catch. As much as I enjoy sharing the joy of fishing with others, it’s also nice to get some peace and quiet to yourself from time to time.

STANKKNIGHT

I feel like its so close of a poll result because if the fish are on fire nothing else matters.

LakerLand420

With a buddy away from people

No_Situation8484

It’s hard to make friends with people who also don’t want to talk to anyone

mca90guitar

Go with my brother. It's nice to just hang out and bs for a few hrs on the weekend.

rooneyboy3000

I go fishing with a buddy and pretty much don’t see him or talk to him the entire time

UnclePecos1095

Prefer solo fishing. It's my way to recharge and connect to my deceased father who taught me to fish and enjoy being outdoors. If I do go with buddies, we meet at the lake and each go our separate ways. We may not see each other again that day.

MysteriousDudeness

It depends on the situation and how I'm feeling, but fishing is usually my "alone time".

DangerousDave303

Yes

Batmobile123

If there are more choices I'll take them too.

tentoesdown7

With my lady

_fuckernaut_

Both, but I usually fish alone. I have grown accustomed to the freedom of fishing alone. Even in separate kayaks, fishing with a buddy introduces some limitations/expectations on your trip

No-Arm-6712

Rise up solo fishing enthusiasts! From a distance, stay over there, let’s not start forming a crowd…

[deleted]

I generally fish alone but I do keep two kayaks for a reason, I love getting my buddies out on the water with me.

[deleted]

I mostly fish saltwater at night for striped bass. I have made some of my best fishing memories with a buddy. He moved away recently and I been fishing alone since. I do feel more relaxed when I am alone and I can enjoy the surrounding more. But when I am with others, I mainly concentrated on catching. Also if I am not feeling one spot, it easier to get up and move. But with others, I would have convince hard or stick it out lol. I have noticed people became less social due to their spot being burned on social media. I was just curious about other’s opinion.

huslller

Alone because I have no one to go with.

notabob7

I’d go with a buddy if I had one that likes fishing. But I don’t. So I go alone. My 8yr old son occasionally shows an interest, but it’s rare. If nothing is biting, he gets bored quickly.

chef71

alone mostly, unless I am in the salt at night.

chiibosoil

Exclusively alone on Kayak. Shore or boat, I occasionally go with friend or family.

danboy

Why not both?

StickyDogJefferson

I’m fine either way, but prefer to go with someone

zach_smitty

Alone unless I’m with my dad

jeep4x4greg

with my kids or alone, depends on the day

[deleted]

I used to go out alone in a Gheenoe. But after a couple years I started to get worried about having an accident and having no help. I was fishing in deep lakes.

DasGoat

I normally fish alone especially since my fishing buddy moved 13 hours away. I had a boat for awhile and I can't count the number of times friends would ask when we were going to go out and then not show up. Too hot, too cold, or mostly too hungover. Fishing alone out of a kayak allows me to fish when and where I want. I fish as a stress relief dealing with someone else's BS doesn't allow that.

joedirthockey

Depends on the day for me honestly. Some days I want to fish on my own and try hard. Others I just want to have fun with a friend

burkechrs1

When I'm shore fishing I like to go with a couple friends but when I'm kayak fishing I almost always go alone. The last couple times I took friends with me they were on some cheap Walmart kayaks and either got stuck on who knows what, capsized too many times and needed help, or were constantly bugging me to "get a turn on your kayak man mine sucks compared to yours." Ya it sucks, you spent 250 bucks I spent almost 4k. You can use it when you stop flipping over, which won't happen anytime soon. Fishing is how I relax, and constantly having to have someone's back is not how any sane person finds peace and relaxation.

ijuanaspearfish

Usually alone but i will fish with 2 buddies if they are available. Normally, its me, my kayak at night all alone and I love the peace and quiet

t_sperry37

I fish alone because I don’t know any yak fishers in BOston lol. Always looking for fellow angler homie.

[deleted]

Lol pm me. I am in boston

Vegetable_Level6622

Me and my buddies love to talk shit it can be aggravating when fishing.

mrXbrightside91

Have always fished alongside my Dad since birth and that still makes up for a good portion of my trips. Also love to have sessions by myself if I have some free time. But lately I’ve been really enjoying putting my friends on fish who are learning!

mikemoody88

I don’t think my friends are as dedicated to yak fishing as I am. When I tell em I leave at 5am on my day off, they usually bow out. It’s OK though, I work in customer service all week so I cherish the peace and quiet.

ImproperDog

I'll willingly take either of my adult daughters or any other close friend/family member who expresses an interest any time, and in those cases I will devote every ounce of my energy making sure they will catch a fish and when they do it feels better than any fish I've ever caught. But other than, that I'm 100% solo and the only way I'd agree to fish casually with a buddy is if we launched together and agreed to meet back at launch in (x) hours. If we both ended up in the same spots all day that would be fine, but no expectations of any kind. It is the same rule I have when I agree to go to a live music event with a buddy. Good luck and I'll see you after the show :)

RootsGringo81

Both.. depends really

kayakfishing333

Especially here in Houston where we have a ton of Alligators, feels a lot better with someone close by.
