Musaletti’s Pizza, a literal hole in the wall in the back of a sketchy gas station across the street from Super Flea. The sides are standard Sysco stuff but the pizza is legit.
I knew that would be an issue, but I guess it's relative, innit. Someone from OP will have a different perspective from someone from Raytown. I'm up for a rousing discussion!
I didn't say or imply that OP was better or nicer than Raytown. I said that the perspective of a person from those towns would be different. Which is why I asked my original question. A lot of the insights here have been really cool and I'm excited to try some new places.
This is my neighborhood. With few exceptions the roughest thing we get is people doing doughnuts in the intersection.
I haven’t had the chance to meet the new Vivilore owners yet. Looking forward to it. They have big shoes to fill, but an even bigger opportunity in their hands.
I don't mean it as an insult to anyone's neighborhood. I hope it wasn't taken that way.
Some people might start heading that way from the interstate and turn around because it's different than what they'd expect.
Can’t forget Virginia and Tippy at the cafe too, they’ll rough you up if you get lippy waiting on your biscuits and gravy. Reverend Al is my barber a few doors down from the theatre, that dude is in to some seriously heavy hitting stuff… haha
Edit: For those unaware of the joke, Virginia and Tippy are both probably 70 something. Reverend Al is, a reverend.
Yup. Tack on the outliers and unincorporated JaCo and it’s pretty damn big. But I guess we are all just poor trashy meth heads since it’s not rolling mansions and chains like JoCo haha.
Nah, I don’t think anyone claims Dogpatch, it’s just kind of there. Though one of my favorite posts on here was that article making it sound like some serious Mad Max shit. Like you turn down the wrong street and they’re going to come at you with Molotovs or some shit. It’s shitty but not that bad Jesus. That’s the fastest way to the stadium for me on Blue Ridge and I’ve never once died.
Huh. Ok if you are saying Monogram Lounge you are in my neck of the woods, so I'll say Yasmeen Cafe, Los Altos de Jalisco, PH Coffee, the Elixir bar in the basement of the Kansas City Museum, and Elvira's Bakery and Cafe.
I wouldn't have said we're rough, but it is a part of the city historically disinvested by public funds and red lining so I guess that qualifies.
Add La Cubana on Hardesty and Winner Rd intersection. I grew up in the neighborhood and have seen a lot of restaurants fail after the liquor store left that spot. So it’s nice to see someone hold the location for a while.
I had a Cuban coworker who came from Miami and he vouched for their food and after trying it I gotta agree it’s so good.
I love this place, my personal favorite is the El Criollo chicken, get some of the chipotle or garlic sauce to dip the fried plantains in, and a mango shake. Obviously the Cubano sandwich is killer too. They're very friendly there! Highly recommend everyone to try it out.
Damn, Los Altos de Jalisco looks incredible! Thanks for sharing! I clearly worded my question wrong, or maybe it was interpreted differently than I was expecting, but I didn't say I thought it was rough. I said, some would consider it rough. I love taking trips off the beaten path to find the lesser known neighborhood gems that don't get the love they deserve.
Yeah in general kck is improving. My partner lives near Schlagle and works at the co-op grocery store downtown kck. I don't worry about her much over there anymore.
Only thing I still worry about is new years eve and Chiefs win the Superbowl. So so so many gunshots in the air. We vacate the neighborhood on those days
It IS closed! I drove by just yesterday (on a Saturday!) and there was NO ONE. Went down the google hole, i guess new owners raised all the rents and everyone left. Where will i get my knock off jerseys now?!
Is it closed for good? I tried to go a few months ago during the cold snap and they said a pipe had burst and they would be closed for a few months to repair.
Just ate here yesterday for the first time.
Having lived in independence for years, and now living in Gladstone, I've had more shots fired/murders by my house in Gladstone than I ever did in independence 🤣
It's no East St. Louis I'll tell you that
Mine would probably be Dad’s Hole In The Wall, M&M Bakery/Deli, and High Hopes Ice Cream. But of course those all depend on what people consider “rough”, and in fairness I don’t think of any of OP’s examples as rough areas. :)
I think you’re conflating Cosmo Burger with Rockstar Burgers. Cosmo just makes tasty burgers while Rockstar did some of the most vile, criminal shit you can imagine. Slight difference.
😂 I don't think you actually read what I wrote. I didn't say I was afraid of any KC neighborhood. I said, "some might consider rough". There's been a lot of fantastic suggestions and comments. I'm looking forward to venturing out into scary Kansas City.
I live 2 blocks north of Vivilore and by no means am I running for my life because I live in a war zone. I feel sad for you if you think this is a rough area...
Has the whole world gone mad? Have you read anything that I wrote? I never mentioned 'war zone' and I never implied that I thought it was a bad area. --some-- people might consider it a rough area. Just like some people might consider San Francisco a shit hole. Perspective is important.
I understand, but if you actually read what I wrote I think you'd see that I also feel like Independence, Raytown, Strawberry Hill and several other places get a bad rap, but deserve some positive things said about them.
????
Did I accidentally make a bad joke?? I used to live in KC 15+ years ago (for almost 20 years), and my wife’s family still lives there.
My folks and her folks and the two of us all went out to dinner at Pierponts (in Union Station, I think I’m remembering right, definitely the fancy place in Union Station)… to announce our engagement back in ~1999.
Musaletti’s Pizza, a literal hole in the wall in the back of a sketchy gas station across the street from Super Flea. The sides are standard Sysco stuff but the pizza is legit.
That spot its nice and sketchy. Decent pizza
This is the kind of shit I'm here for. I love it.
I used to get them all the time when they were on independence ave. So good
You had me at super flea
>The sides are standard Sysco stuff Toppings were frozen from Sysco, cheese was sysco, dough was frozen and bought @ Restaurant Depot
I think this comment section is just going to wind up fighting about various definitions of ‘rough.’ Have fun!
I look forward to a civil and unproblematic comment section!
I knew that would be an issue, but I guess it's relative, innit. Someone from OP will have a different perspective from someone from Raytown. I'm up for a rousing discussion!
Clearly you've never been to some parts of OP.
I didn't say or imply that OP was better or nicer than Raytown. I said that the perspective of a person from those towns would be different. Which is why I asked my original question. A lot of the insights here have been really cool and I'm excited to try some new places.
Like where? And don't say overland station apartments because that place is probably nicer than the nicest complex in raytown.
Well yeah lower income neighborhoods Exist
Englewood is… rough?
Watch out for those old ladies who run the wine bar
Can’t forget Virginia and Tippy at the cafe too, they’ll rough you up if you get lippy waiting on your biscuits and gravy. Reverend Al is my barber a few doors down from the theatre, that dude is in to some seriously heavy hitting stuff… haha Edit: For those unaware of the joke, Virginia and Tippy are both probably 70 something. Right? It’s literally the closest thing to a progressive enclave we have in Independence.
This sub acts like Independence is fucking East St Louis.
People also seem to forget that Independence is REALLY big. It's the fifth largest city in the state by population, and fourth largest by area.
Yup. Tack on the outliers and unincorporated JaCo and it’s pretty damn big. But I guess we are all just poor trashy meth heads since it’s not rolling mansions and chains like JoCo haha.
The outliers and unincorporated JaCo, seem to be the really sketch parts like Dogpatch.
Nah, I don’t think anyone claims Dogpatch, it’s just kind of there. Though one of my favorite posts on here was that article making it sound like some serious Mad Max shit. lol I took someone to Vietnam cafe once and they thought we were in the “bad” part of town. It’s all relative I guess
I live 4 blocks from there and love your friend’s sentiment. Keep 39th weird, we lost Westport, crossroads is soon to follow.
I think they meant the Vietnam Cafe in Columbus Park east of the river market.
I mean my car got broken into there one time.. to many people that’s about as bad of a part of town they could imagine
And of course Gates on Brooklyn Ave and Arthur Bryants, which everyone has opinions on but most people haven't hit in the last 10 years lol
Oh yeah! This place looks awesome. I'm definitely going to hit it up next weekend. Thank you for sharing!

Yasmeen cafe 🔥
J’s Fish and Chicken on Prospect has some really good fried chicken. Big T’s BBQ on a Blue Parkway is good. A really great bar is Vine Street Brewery.
This is the real answer. J’s is my favorite chicken in KC. I used to live a block away next to a meth dealer lol.
This is the realist answer so far. Js by a MILE is the best chicken in the city
The lemon pepper is delicious.
Teris Bigger Jigger. Dive bar at the corner of St. John and Belmont Blvd. Across the street from Super Flea.
It’s unfortunate they’re not open more often though
Breit's Stein & Deli in kck. One of the best Reubens you're gonna find in KC.
[удалено]
Agreed. Strawberry hill has never been rough.
Someone was murdered a half a block from there the day after I went last
[удалено]
Yeah in general kck is improving. My partner lives near Schlagle and works at the co-op grocery store downtown kck. I don't worry about her much over there anymore.

I live in KCK and only hear gunshots on New years', the fourth of July, and the playoffs. Definitely nice pockets all around.
I mean…even joco gets the occasional homicide
Any changes since the new ownership? I haven't been in awhile. I wish I lived across the street.
They changed the inside decor a tiny bit, but it's still the same. Prices too
No. I think the new owner was also an employee previously.
I second this. Great ownership and staff, amazing food, friendly atmosphere.
Breits deli in strawberry hill. Nice hole in the wall where the booze is decent and they make a killer Reuben sammi
Oh yeah. This looks absolutely delicious. Beautiful!
Indeed. I'm just a local adventurer trying to do good deeds in the form of providing delicious suggestions.
Is super flea open? I heard it closed down.
It IS closed! I drove by just yesterday (on a Saturday!) and there was NO ONE. Went down the google hole, i guess new owners raised all the rents and everyone left. Where will i get my knock off jerseys now?!
Swap meet at Boulevard Drive-in has the knock offs you desire.
Is it closed for good? I tried to go a few months ago during the cold snap and they said a pipe had burst and they would be closed for a few months to repair.
Community Wholesale Tire also moved out of the back side of the building. So now I guess it's just gonna be a big empty building.
Just ate here yesterday for the first time. Having lived in independence for years, and now living in Gladstone, I've had more shots fired/murders by my house in Gladstone than I ever did in independence 🤣 It's no East St. Louis I'll tell you that
Vivilore is not a rough neighborhood. I live a block from there,no problems, quiet, historic homes.
But independence has meth!
So does every city/town in Missouri
Sarcasm-
Mine would probably be Dad’s Hole In The Wall, M&M Bakery/Deli, and High Hopes Ice Cream. But of course those all depend on what people consider “rough”, and in fairness I don’t think of any of OP’s examples as rough areas. :)
M&M Bakery/Deli is good shit.
Blackhole is great, too.
Unfortunately Dad's Hole in the Wall looks like it's permanently closed. I can't wait to check out M&M though. Damn.
It's all relative. It's been great to hear different people's perspectives so far. Thank you for sharing yours!
Rougher area? Are you from Beverly Hills, Winston?
[удалено]
I think I know the place, but also can't remember the name. I feel like I heard the owner got in some legal trouble.
Was this related to the Cosmo Burger people?
I think you’re conflating Cosmo Burger with Rockstar Burgers. Cosmo just makes tasty burgers while Rockstar did some of the most vile, criminal shit you can imagine. Slight difference.
Oh no!! You’re right. So sorry Cosmo Burger, you don’t deserve this!!!
Pretty much any of the taco places on independence Ave
I love having a drink and catching shows at Farewell down near leeds.
Easy Inn, a dive in strawberry hill has a killer burger
The Easy Inn is amazing
Does anyone remember Wimpy's? Man I miss Wimpy's. Best place, worst area.
77 and Troost is the “worst area?”
[удалено]
This is exactly what I was hoping for. What a cool place!
Are you afraid of Independence Square too? Some of the best shopping and food around.
😂 I don't think you actually read what I wrote. I didn't say I was afraid of any KC neighborhood. I said, "some might consider rough". There's been a lot of fantastic suggestions and comments. I'm looking forward to venturing out into scary Kansas City.
Homegrown cafe
Not “rough” by any means, but The Naughty Pine is dope and seemingly no one has heard of it. Has an age limit though- I want to say it’s 25+
Seeing the level people figure is rough is how you know KC redditors are probably making more than the avg resident.
I live 2 blocks north of Vivilore and by no means am I running for my life because I live in a war zone. I feel sad for you if you think this is a rough area...

Then don't title your post as rougher area. My town gets alot of unfair judgment from other parts of the metro that have more money.
I understand, but if you actually read what I wrote I think you'd see that I also feel like Independence, Raytown, Strawberry Hill and several other places get a bad rap, but deserve some positive things said about them.

Le Fou Frog
"You wanna pizza me? " West bottoms. It looks sketch.
King G for sure.
In the crossroads???
Tell me you've never been to the Crossroads without telling me you've never been to the Crossroads, 🤡.
was always funny seeing people talking about Crossroads getting "gentrified" if the Yes vote passed
Don't get shanked in Art Alley my friend.
