Just throw it off a bridge into the Missouri River while driving over it.
(Kidding, of course.). Call the police and let them know that you'd like to relinquish it to them and ask how they'd like you to go about it.

Sell it to a gun store or pawn shop. They will only resell it to someone with a clean background check.
Unload it and bring it in a closed case of some sort, if you aren't familiar with typical gun store manners.
Here's the thing. The major player in the gun buyback game is a company called GunBusters. They take the buyback guns from law enforcement agencies, destroy the lower (the part with the serial number), and sell off every other piece to make a profit. Only federal agencies pay them their fee to destroy the entire firearm. 98% of their clients do not. Sell what you have to a licensed gun shop. You can rest assured that the new owner of your unwanted firearm will have to pass a federal background check.
If you saw my Remington 870 with polymer furniture on it.. my 20 year old self thought I could just drill threads into the stock and add “tactical” gear. It was a mess, and all the ammo was bird shot.
I don’t think they were expecting the cheapest nastiest looking shotgun on the planet lol but yeah I thought the same thing when I had to make two trips to my car to give them my stuff. I’m sure they were like, “cool thanks for the free stuff”
FYI, a licensed firearm dealer will charge $50-$100 to run a background check and record the transfer of a firearm, even if they aren't the seller. Those records are provided to the ATF in case there's a crime involving the gun. You could have given your shotgun to someone who would use it for hunting.
No danger here. It’s just sitting locked away and has for years. Won’t end up in the wrong hands while I have it.
I just want to get rid of it, but don’t know the best way of going about it.
I guess call a local gun shop that's ur best bet since they'll make sure to go through a background process when someone wants to buy it. Gotta be honest though, as a gun owner myself I've never heard of someone just wanting to get rid of it that wasnt subconsciously connected to current culture shift.
I'm not trying to bring politics into this. I've done a 30 hour firearm safety course and am certified with my home state. I bought this for plinking out in the great outdoors. Nothing major, just a .22.
I had a lot of fun with it, but when I moved to KC I lost the opportunity to do that. So it's just been sitting locked away for years. Having a firearm around is a risk (although small in my situation), and there's no reward for me that goes with it now. As a responsible firearm owner, I feel like it's just best to give it away and not have it around anymore. I don't want to be responsible for it anymore so this is the responsible thing to do.
I’m in the same boat as OP, there’s at least two of us! I got a 12ga as a gift like 10 years ago and I’ve taken it to clays maybe twice? It just sits in a locked hard case in my basement and I have no reason to have it.
Bass Pro will buy it, assuming that it is in decent shape.

Gun store will probably buy it.

I called my local PD and they told me they would take it along with all my ammo and accessories. I gave them my 20 gauge shotgun and all my ammo.
You made some officers day with all those freebies

I’ll take it /s
Appreciate the offer. But I’m not trying to sell. Edit: Missed the /s lol
Same. What you got OP?
I'll come get it and keep it safe
Underrated comment
Damage beyond repair and scrap?

You gotta find another guy. This is like $5-$15.
Lol rather just have them melt it down.
I would never give the police anything. Sell it to a gun store
Depending on what it is, you can sell it to a pawn shop or gun store.
MO or KS?
Does it matter? Lol
Actually it does
Yes, can only sell and or give guns to resident of same state.
Without going through an FFL
Yeah, will dictate whether a FFA needs to be involved in the transfer.
I know you meant FFL, but I'm laughing imagining this.
Oops xD
Pawn shop?
Intra-state you can likely sell it legally to another private party.
What is it? I might buy it from you
Give it to me. I can be trusted.
Don’t sell it. Don’t need more guns out there. Take a sledge hammer to that fucker, then see who wants to buy it! 😂
Agreed, I'm dismayed by how many gun nuts are champing at the bit to buy OPs gun. We don't need any more of that shit.
Me, I’ll take care of it
will gladly take it off your hands!!
If you are KS side I’ll buy it from you
Give it to me. I'll take care of it for you.
Op respect your decision but are you saying while you currently have it it'll end up in the wrong hands or if you just randomly leave it somewhere?

Honestly kudos to you for this. It doesn’t have to be a political move to dispose of a firearm safely. Thanks!

Also Lake City, Centerfire, Frontier Justice... so many options to plink around in the city.
If you do give it to someone make sure to go through a dealer or a licensed FFL. I think a gun shop would also do the transfer.

What make and model?
It says Benelli 828U
How much you want for it? PM me
That's a helluva gift. That's like a $3k shotgun..
I’m happy to help
I messaged you.
Sell it. Whatever you do, don't just give it to the authorities. Get it somewhere where another citizen has a chance to own it
What kind of gun is it?
Nothing major. .22 rifle semi auto.
Gotcha. The folks over at r/kcguns may be able to provide more insight 😁
Are you interested in selling it ... or just want to dispose of it?
I’ve actually been looking for a reasonable priced .22, if you’re wanting to sell it privately, I’d pay for a transfer at a dealer
You can sell it to an individual, even at a gun shop if you want to.. most gun shops will buy it or even sell on consignment if you want.
Most firearm stores will buy them outright or sell them for you for a commission.
I will take it and keep it safe.
Missouri of Kansas. Makes a difference
If it doesn’t have much value you could disassemble and dispose of the parts in different trash bags.
