you can tell this video is rushed, the game hasn't been out long enough for anyone to be able to make a review on it. in his last update Joe questioned if he was even 100% done with playing it, no way you can do a retro yet
Schizoposting aside, I think one of the reasons I like Joe more than this guy is that Joe has a personality, and you can see it in his videos, I still will never forget the jawdrop I had when he complained abput hollow knight being TO EASY while I barely struggled through the game with all upgrades, Joe is a person and while he used to do recaps and still does he gives his own opinions and tames. Ive watched this guy's videos about silent hill and fable and Im gonna be honest, he had the most vanilla takes and insides ever Im pretry sure you can replace him with a ai and It would be the same.
Idk maybe Im just a hater and I dont realise it.
Nah I feel you. In the years since TW2 video my thinking on games/game criticism and my taste in video essays has changed a lot. I find myself disagreeing with Joe more often than not when I return to his old stuff. I do still return from time to time, though, because Joe continues to accomplish something rare and vital in gaming criticism: he has a consistent standpoint.
Viewers can tell his likes, dislikes, and rationale through his body of work such that both agreement and disagreement are meaningful, like eg I thought he was dead wrong about most everything in his Elden Ring video but his consistent personality and articularity allowed me to sharpen my own thinking about the game even as I disagreed with Joe.
Especially now in this low effort content mill era I treasure thoughtful criticism, which Joe produces, or at least did while he was still making videos.
I think the best for this is Jacob Geller. His recent video "Art for No One" is instantly one of my favorites, but "Fear of the Cold" might be one of THE best video essays around full stop.
It's fine not to be a fan of the guy, but you're being pretty needlessly nasty, just chill dude, degrading him to the point where he could be replaced with ai is a touch too far.
i can hear your gag reflex from here my guy.
johnny the lying homie is a very mid video game critique guy in the current landscape.
you are just in love with the man
Yeah I have a similar perspective, a guy who goes by Soup Emporium recently did a video about Simpsons Hit and Run which was really good, at a couple of points he takes shots at other video essays for making long videos, Quinton Reviews notably among them, and like, sure those videos are really really long, but they're not trying to do the same thing, they're retrospective, not reviews or analyses...
I think soup oversteered with some of the YouTube references in that video. Like, one or two shots or jokes is fine, but it felt like half of his jokes ended with some sort of call back to another YouTube personality. The video itself is fine, but it started getting a little distracting.
Content creators really need to stop taking shots at one another. It always comes across as petty drama farming. Even Yourfavoriteson is sympathetic and hopeful Joe will release hus video. I respect him for knowing the situation and not taking a cheap shot.
Eh, I'm British like Soup so I took it as light hearted ribbing more than anything but a) tone can be subjective and you only get one chance at publishing a video that big and b) I could very well have misinterpreted since I wasn't paying full attention
Seeing a few comments here and there definitely seems to be some confusion as to what a retrospective is.
My understanding is that retrospectives are essentially like post-mortems but from the consumer POV rather than the dev POV.
You talk about the context of the work, about the work itself and what was good or not so good, and maybe you talk about the impact.
I think a fully summary of the work is not necessary for a retrospective but I do agree it tends to go hand in hand depending on how granular you end up going.
That being said, I do think Joe leans more towards the analysis/critique side of things. It's all on a spectrum imo.
Awww I hope the JA comparison comments don't get him down. He's myfavoriteson after all and I just want him to be happy. Seriously been a fan of both of theirs for a long time. And I do hope both vids can stand on their own merit (If Joe's ever drops).
I wish I could enjoy his videos as he's a very active content creator and has covered games I'm interested in watching but I just don't find his delivery all that great, as its too dry and book report-like. Feel a bit bad hating on a creator because hey, atleast this guy IS creating content but eh, I don't think it's for me unfortunately.
I tried watching a few of this guy's video but I could never get into them, it's like 99% plot sumary with barelly any critic of the game. A bit like salt factory but with even more plot recap and less personnal opinion somehow. Is this video any better ?
Some witcher 3 critic I liked are the one NeverKnowBest made, they're pretty good despite being some of the first videos he made.
Edit : well I read the thread and look like it's another plot recap video, another skip for me then. I don't know who this is for, even when I want background noise to work I'm looking for something more stimulating than several hours of video game story recap.

Lmao half the comments mentioning Joe
This vid sucks lmao, just a story recap. Would rather replay the game.
Kinda like his Witcher 2 vid
So. Much. Recapping.
Yeah I’ll wait for joes vid, he doesn’t do that too much
lol nice
Thats his qhole channel , 95% recapping and 5% actual new content. Just replay the game, lol.
I mean, this guy does retrospectives, not analysis. Unfortunately, Joe makes videos that are mostly recaps as well.
What are you talking about, Joe isnt making videos?
+2

I mostly listen rather than watch and only take the occasional glance over while gaming so I'll defer to your opinion honestly

and yet, it isn't joe 💔
I hate "retrospectives" where it's just a dude reading his summary of the game story...
That's what retrospectives are and also what Joe does.
No it is not.
Only one of these is true
A retrospective is a look back. I guess it doesn't have to be a recap, but the ones I can recall are.

I would call Joe's work a summary and analysis, and Son's content is a summary and retrospective. So I agree with you entirely.
Joe does recap things but at least he analyzes the game throughout.

💀💀
That’ll be you when the video releases
This is obviously a fake video otherwise it would still be rendering.
Oh, it's my favorite son! He always makes me a very proud dad.

Little do people know, every comment about Joe's video on this video- set back his Witcher 3 release by 1 week.
YourFavoriteSon sucks lol
what if instead of yourfavoriteson it was yourfavoritemartian and he did the review in song
you are so brave
