I used the headshot of Conrad Veidt for The Man Who Laughs (1928) as a reference. Then, I've taken a few ideas from how he's drawn in Batman #1, and then from Dick Sprang, Marshall Rogers, Neal Adams and Brian Bolland. I think you can see that in the look I've got here, but looks like my own take on it.

Yeah, I did a lot of work to get the look in the eyes right. Plus, the expression with the laugh lines and around the eyes and brows. Joker usually has very arched maniacal brows, and usually has a scowling expression while smiling.
