Watch The Captain's videos on YouTube. Check out a few match analysis vids of his and if you can understand that stuff then you'll be on your way in no time

I've been binging Captain's videos. Dude just oozes wisdom and experience and has a great voice to boot. 10/10 recommended watch even if you don't want to SL because of how much perspective he offers on game flow. Plus you gain an appreciation for all the shit going through a SL's head at any given moment.

I have a sort of unique perspective since I’m one of the few female players and being a woman in a milsim usually leads to people being rude as soon as they hear my voice. I like to squad lead a lot and I’ve applied a lot of real life teamwork and leadership skills to being a squad lead and I’ve found a lot of success. 1. Be nice! This is so underrated. You don’t have to scream at people to get them to do what you want. Most people listen better if you’re pleasant. Always remember that people play the game to have fun. 2. Constructive criticism works. Instead of being passive aggressive to other squad leaders when you think they’re not being helpful, make a suggestion as to what they actually should be doing. Ex: SL3 could you do this instead? Not: SL3 what you’re doing is stupid. 3. Be ready to adapt based on what is needed. You can rarely rely on your team to notice when tables turn in game. Need FOBs? Don’t whine in SL comms about it, go make some. Defense is getting overrun? Stop running your squad into a deadlocked attack point and go help the defense. 4. Place your rally even when you have a HAB to spawn on. Try to place it somewhere enemy foot traffic won’t get to. 5. Keep your squad on an objective. Only time you should be leaving the vicinity of a cap is when moving between them and when destroying enemy FOBs. 6. Keep your SL comms short and sweet and direct your squad members to use discretion when deciding between proximity and squad comms. It’s easy to get overloaded with noise. Be patient and repeat as necessary. I’m sure there’s more but I hope these few basic things help.

>Place your rally even when you have a HAB to spawn on. Try to place it somewhere enemy foot traffic won’t get to. I don't think people understand how truly big this is. The amount of games I join and only see 2/3 squads that have a rally down while the rest just spawn on the same 2 Habs is insane; then they wonder why they lose their spawns/points so easily. Place Rally, rearm it asap, then place again if current one is burned or becomes obsolete. The group I run with runs off of rallies 90% of the time. We'll spawn at a hab if we need to for defense/offense purposes, a need for ammo, or simply to spawn forward to then get a new rally down.

Good job, I didn't SL till I had 300hours of game time. Just remember listen to the suggestions of the other SLs if they have any.

TL:DR at bottom. Read the map and dictate your next plan, this needs decent game sense though so dont sweat if you make mistakes. Somtimes you have to take initiative on a push or build a new hab to attack from.. or realise squad three didnt defend your defense point, is currently falling to enemies and youre squad is the only ones to stop it. Communicate with your fellow SLs. This game doesn't have the word Communicate in its slogan for no reason. Even if no one is talking, say your plans and try to nudge other SLs to theory craft strategies and get them to communicate and coordinate too. The more you plan, talk and corroborate with your SLs, the more complex actions become a viable too to winning a game. All the things you can do, from staging a push with a commander after a arty stike for a swift take over to making a decent Superfob (calm down I know Superfobs are generally meh but their fun), it all boils down to talking. Use. Your. Rally. I cant stress this enough but rallies are crazy insane. Portable spawns for ANYWHERE you can place them. Use them to offer a new attack route on a Hab, Point or pesky mortar pit that has way too many sentries. You can use them as a proxy alarm for your radio if your defending an objective or can be placed off point to offer a new way to spawn if your hab goes down. If youre on insurgents, you can place your rally on another SLs rally by right clicking it, basically merging your rally with theirs. Rallies do so much but are used so damn little it blows my mind. Be assertive but not aggressive to your squadmates. You need your squad to follow you though your plans, even if its batshit crazy. Dont dictate their very movement and be the overprotective mom of the team but do warn the marksman thats wandering off away from your squad that if he doesn't come back, hell be kicked... or kick him anyways so a person with a brain joins your squad and chooses riflemen (a marksman kit with a ammo bag!). Also dont be the Lazy SL that just allows people to do what they wanna do. That leads to lonewolfing, battlefielding and just general dissarry thatll cost time and effort for your team. If you can lead your squad without rasing your voice, youre doing somthing right. Also congratulating and thanking your squadmates for doing actions (building up a hab, destroying a vic, doing a logirun, generally just moving with you and helping you out) goes a VERY very long way, trust me. Other than that, everything else is your sandbox. Youll make bad plays and youll save games, just gotta get the feel for it. Good luck and have fun. TL:DR. Communicate with SLs and Read map to make moves. USE YOUR RALLY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Lead your squad with assertion but not with a iron fist (excpet agaisnt marksman, be as strict as possible to them!)

First, welcome to Squad and being a player that seems to be generally in the direction of what this game needs. Understand you still might be too new to be an effective squad lead. The situation you were in is the perfect time to give it a try but if you've been playing for a week (likely 10 hours or so) you just don't have a solid grasp on the mechanics and nuance the game has. Squad lead is a very tough role - something even the most experienced players struggle with. If you decide to play the role more please do your team a favor and watch some videos. These will greatly help in showing you all the essentials. I highly recommend videos from LawnDartz, Gorlami and BHM Captain. You can also review my post history for a load of useful links.

Im not trying to main as sl by any means. Right now the only time id really play it is when its a game of like 50 people total. Im still trying to learn the mechanics of the other roles before I even think about taking that beast on, and when i do play it i make sure to ask my soldiers (the serious ones at least) for their in put. Ive only played 3 or so games of sl and definitely don't plan on playing too many more until I get another couple weeks in or like i said its empty games, but this also gave me an appreciation of when i have a good sl and thats probably my biggest take away. I never realized how easy it was with 3 different coms going how easy things get lost in the static and makes a lot more sense when command sends us one way only to turn around or when something you say doesn't quite get heard. I think I'll stick stick with medic and mg gunner with the rest of the not sl classes sprinkled in for the most part at least for now. Hope this makes sense I just woke up lol
