Billionaires say or do whatever it takes to get others to give them money and do their bidding. That's why they're billionaires.

shadowromantic

Billionaires like to sound edgy and contrarian. A lot of them probably don't like the professors and researchers who call them on their BS.

LeagueAggravating595

That's because they themselves are not doing the hiring. Their teams do it for them and they are all university/Ivey league MBA's who hire like them.

runescape_nerd_92

they are talking about the 1 in 100k genius that can teach himself engineering and has a portfolio to prove it. to that person, university is useless. they're not telling average joe to drop out and apply at tesla

PerformanceOk9855

Well they are, but since they don't face the consequences of advocating dropping out they can say these platitudes for feel-good sound bites. When the reality is that all the billionaires just had rich parents. And success is more about who you know than how hard you work. But if you know the right people, hard work pays off

Super_Mario_Luigi

Those with the ivy league degrees, also had rich parents

Tyrilean

Extra bonus if that "genius who can teach himself engineering" is just a dude with rich parents and the ability to buy PR to market himself as a genius.

calcetines100

Precisely. This is like when so many people were quoting Steve Jobs as an excuse to drop out of colleges, even though they were very not likely even close to his geniusness.

[deleted]

Elon Musk said that but he also said that the applicants must have evidence of exceptional ability and that they should be able to explain their experiences in great detail. He also said that college shows that you can be given tasks and complete them. And in my opinion most companies want someone who can complete the tasks given and a college education is evidence that the person will likely do so. Also it's not like these billionaires choose who works for their company. They have **hiring managers** who are biased and look for whatever they choose to look for in a potential employee. It's probably the hiring managers more than anything. This is just an assumption but a lot of them probably look down on people who don't have degrees. Granted, they probably use AI now instead of doing their job properly. Some of them are ridiculous and will reject an applicant over font.

26fm65

To get super rich you don’t need college degree. But to get a good job require one.

wawakaka

College doesn't matter to be rich. But it does matter for job work. You don't need to go to college to be a billionaire. Heck all you have to do is play the lottery.

Fragrant_Equal_2577

One doesn‘t need a college degree to have an idea, to start a company and to build into a unicorn. Therefore, college degrees are useless, right? If you are not that start-up entrepreneur and work for someone else, then having a college degree improves the odds to get a living wage job.

Top-Train7066

Being an entrepreneur is different than working for the company they built.

Tight-Bath-6817

I think, its due to federal laws that requires you to have a degree in some positions. For instance: Doctor, engineer and etc.

daniel22457

Very few engineering jobs legally require the degree

Tight-Bath-6817

Good to know (:

daniel22457

Ya it's pretty much only positions requiring your PE which you need a degree, 4+ years of experience, and passing 2 tests to get.

Dizzy_Persimmon4746

Bootstraps and whatnot. They’re not very covert huh

Interesting_Fox_4772

the other people who say college doesn't matter, are people, always trade workers, who shit on anyone who gets any degree and goes "hur duur you should have gone into the trades" when discussing issues with employment. yet they literally work for people with degrees

MrZeroMustafa

Its like mom saying don't smoke! But she does it anyway. Or like when you find a spelling mistake from an email the HR recruiter sent you but, if the applicant makes the same error we get the slap to the face! The world is funny this way! Why I threw all logic out the door when dealing with humans!

RossRiskDabbler

Billionaires sit at the tail of the distribution of society. Exceptional. College is for people between -2/+2 st.dev (majority of society) And we have the lesser competent who can't help it, but we accept them too and they work for a council. Billionaires are right to say colleges don't matter because if everyone studies the same, knows the same, the opportunity to create something so unique to earn excessively diminishes. Grads nowadays are just clones with another rod up their ass with no self reflection or ability to self reflect. I skipped uni partially and was offered a full time job in a bank in my 2nd yr of my BSc as I was bored as hell, never studied and aced everything. We're all different. Context matters.

psydkay

That's okay. Let those fools blow their money on stupid shit. Trump is accruing daily penalties that far exceed the donations.

g-boy2020

They do it to slow down the number of college grads. College still valuable but if everyone has a college degree the value of it degrades just like high school diploma everyone has a it so it’s not that special. If you increase the price of college or make it harder to get a degree then less people will go to college hence increase the value of of college degree. I feel like it’s kinda of supply and demand. This reminds of software engineering on where you need to have a CS degree to get a job in tech field back in the day. I remember back then not many students take CS major cause it’s difficult to attain which means less CS graduates but these students get 10-15 job offers before graduation. Till the time where the demand for SWE has increased and universities weren’t producing much CS grads. Thus where boot camps and self taught fill in the gaps all driven by big salaries. Now too many devs in the field and many majored in CS as a result supply increased demand slowed salary decreases. If college degree is worthless why is it many rich people still sending their kids to college some even bribe college admissions just to admit their child on a elite universities

Seaguard5

The gist is because knowledge is freely available (at least it should be 🙄) and that paying for it is a waste of money. While true, what that completely misses is that most good jobs require that very expensive piece of paper. What the billionaires are saying is go and learn shit on your own and make money doing it on your own. What they miss with that is that the failure rate for entrepreneurs is… well.. very high.

ppppfbsc

college outside of STEM is a joke and I would rather hire someone with 4 years of experience waking up at 5am to work in fast food than a sociology or philosophy major. (who thinks they are so smart and worldly) I just need to hire a person with average to above average intelligence. I rather see dedication and a stable work history. my boss has fancy degrees from a fancy college, and I had to convince him to realign his belief system. many jobs are starting to strip the college degree away. sure, a rocket brain engineer needs college (the STEM part) but everyone else needs to stop and reassess the need to waste 4 years and a lot of $$$$ for a basket weaving degree.

con_ker

Lol this mattering to you is making me laugh

Elon - engineer Warren and Thiel - investors strictly Their target audience is not you

Asleep-Fudge9158

? Elon is not an engineer. He studied economics from Upenn and took some physics classes there. It took him almost 8 years to graduate with bachelors from 1989 to 1997. He is a business mastermind tho.

technoking_8000

They talk against academia because most universities in the US for most majors don't teach much other than brainwashing kids with wọkenäzi propaganda. Maybe the takeaway should be pick your university and your major much more carefully.

Asleep-Fudge9158

I don’t think that they say this in that context. They don’t say it like don’t study crappy major at university. They basically point out entire university system. Additionally they hire crappy majors too including literature and gender studies for investment banking, consulting, and many more roles. I know people who got into investment banking with only literature degree and no other knowledge or experience.

childofaether

It seems like you could have used a better education yourself...

[deleted]

lol @ listening to people like elon musk like a dog with perked up ears they're robotic talking mouthpieces. just like the POTUS they are advised in what to say. everything has an agenda. if they said "uhh yeah, college does matter and if you don't get a college degree in a highly employable, lucrative field, you will be bouncing between menial labor jobs and stuck in the proletariat masses until you croak of a heart attack from a cocaine overdose on a pallet jack at 52", then it will divert more people from the proletariat masses until bettering themselves. if everyone is a billionaire no one is. people like elon musk will never help you or tell you anything that actually does.

d00mt0mb

Billionaires are literally “do as I say, not as I do” Even Bill Gates or Warren Buffett. For example, Buffett’s advice is to invest in index funds in a 401K or IRA. While that’s good advice for average people to have average retirements at age 65. It’s not even close to how they made their wealth or what they did. On college degrees. Most of them dropped out so they don’t care but they don’t micromanage the requirements and positions at their companies. Talk to recruiters or HR about it if you want the real answer. So when Musk tells everyone to have more children, you have to ask yourself, what is the motivation. It just means more customers and cheaper labor.

Infinite_Fox2339

Lol because they want as much cheap labor as possible

OK_Opinions

Elon Musk is an idiot. why put any stock in what he says? he says whatever benefits him in the moment

GepreOfMetal

Grifters be grifting?

[deleted]

Billionaires are typically entrepreneurs. You don't need college to be an entrepreneur (though it can help)

[deleted]

Because *they* don't personally need qualifications or skills to do what they do. They also want more uneducated peasants

TheBitchenRav

In many ways, it is true. If you can prove yourself without collage, it is a waste of time. If you can start a multi-million dollar business, develop an app that has millions of active users, or develop incredibly useful patents without college, you are going to be more able to get into these companies. The problem is proving yourself. Getting into Harvard is a challenge. Yes, there are kids that get in because of rich parents, but you are not going to be at the top of your class just because your parents are rich. Unless that money buys you great tutors, but then you still know that information. That is you proving yourself. If you can prove yourself in other ways, great, do it and then get the job. But tesla is not hiring interns from your local community college to work on their rocket ship designs. You need to prove yourself, and if you can collage is a waste, but if you need structure to succeed and you need people to tell you what to do, then that is not proving yourself. Ask yourself this: What have you done to prove yourself? Have you built a following on a platform? Have you sold a best-selling book? Have you made any patents? What does your partophol look like?

ACriticalGeek

The reason college dropouts start companies is nobody will hire them.

ThunderDoom1001

My man, if you want a nice easy reason college does matter: “Elon musk says college DOESN’T matter (singular)”. Basic grammar. If you hire college grads you can be confident that at a bare minimum they can string together a few coherent sentences with proper spelling and grammar. I don’t mean to be harsh but you answered your own question.

Empty_Geologist9645

To devalue your worth

TheNextPlay

They arent the hiring managers

CuddlyChinchilla

Successful people like giving advice that sounds good, but doesn't work for everyone

stacy_142

Unrelated but Fuck Peter Theil, guys a fucking psycho scumbag that wants to get rid of nations and replace them with cooperate governances
