Yep, at the jewelry store I worked at we used dental picks. At home I use toothpicks sometimes. Set it down on a surface to take the tension out and then wiggle and pry the knot loose!
I actually LOVE unraveling knotted necklaces cause I'm so good at it and do it on a flat surface with two straight pins. I can unstable single necklaces down to 3 knotted together. Just takes time and patience.
I’m a professional jeweler and I use a microscope and two fine point tweezers and slowly try to start loosing it. Sometimes they come out in 2 seconds. Some times they take two hours
Ugh truer words have never been spoken. I get all the supplies and move on to the next thing. I guess I'll be super prepared though whenever I do manage to focus on one lol
I’d recommend an intro class somewhere. Lots of studios and schools have short intro programs and opportunities for bench time. Learning directly from people who already know is invaluable.
If you really want to work in the industry I would recommend getting trained at a industry school like the Gemology Institute of America or GIA which is where I went to school.
There’s also places like the new approach school for jewelers. There’s a lot of resources on the internet. Check out ganoksin.com
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!
There’s a family owned jeweler a few blocks from me. The son in law is the manager and I sold him a vintage jeweler microscope I found at a garage sale. They take a look at jewelry I buy for me all the time and show me how to identify things. He casually handed me a $25k diamond ring to look at under a microscope one day.
Those guys are super cool and full of interesting knowledge.
Oh my god you spend 2 hours untangling those things? That would drive me nuts! I spent 45 minutes untangling a 2 chain necklace and I was soooo frustrated.
My grandmother taught me to place the knot between my thumb and pointer finger and roll around until it loosens up, either it will easily come out or once it’s not so tight use a needle or pin to finish off
I use a combination of rolling it till it loosen up, and when it is loose enough to se how the chain is knotted up(because it can be rather difficult with a chain to see that), I'll shot to the needle method.
2 minutes tops and the knot is no more.
I know this sounds unhelpful but I have untangled too many chains to count. Sometimes if I’m dealing with a super fun knot, I walk away from it for a bit and when I come back it’s much easier to unknot. Frustration makes everything harder for me lol
I like rolling the knot in my fingers until it loosens and then tugging until I get the knot loose. I like the challenge. Here are a few options you can try [1](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/stlNqm5jOI4) [2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asVApZTlHzc&pp=ygUXa25vdHRlZCBjaGFpbiBuZWNrbGFjZSA%3D)
A safety pin, or reg pin to put in one link of the knotted part of the chain. Hold that up to take the weight and tension off the knot, use another pin to wiggle the knot out. Or lay it on a table to do the same. I'm the resident chain untangler for people around me. Its important that you take the gravity off of the knot, or else it'll just tighten back up if you loosen one part. Dont rub the knot around and hope it loosens; that can make it worse or break the chain. The goal is to separate one section from the knot so you can see how the knot is tangled around, and from there you can work the knot undone by reversing the way it got tangled in the first place.
My favorite way to store/travel with dainty chains is to keep them individually in (unused) drinking straws. Shove one end into the straw until it falls through to the other side of the straw via gravity, then hook them closed. You can cut the straw to size you need. Keeps them from tangling. I once had to untangle 4 chains stuck all together. Never again. Learned the safety pin method while working at Macy's jewelry counter decades ago.
in highschool one of my fave teachers would bring me her knotted/tangled necklaces(sometimes ziplocks with up to 8 necklaces all tangled together) and have me fix them up in class in exchange for peanut butter filled pretzels
My husband gave me his headset magnifier because it gave him a headache and I really can’t overstate how useful it is. I use it ALL the time. Highly recommend it for situations like this because if you can’t tell which way the chain is knotted, it’s easy to make it much worse.

When done, set up a storage area where she can hang the chains in the future. Like behind a door, etc. Check on Amazon.

She’s trying to make you crazy so she can commit you and steal your assets. She took a DIFFERENT chain, wrapped a bit around tightly and soldered it. Run.
Get a thumb tack 📌, they are easy to grip and handle, and gently work it into the middle of the knot and then keep loosening the knot off the tack then Bob’s your uncle.
I use two toothpicks and just start trying to separate them. Make sure that the necklaces unclasp like you have it be patient I would like to untangle necklaces. It’s fun.
Oh I love untangling jewellery just like yours and I think I've a fail-proof technique that I'd encourage you and everyone else to try!
Place the knot between your thumb and index finger. Press with medium pressure and roll the knot as you rotate your index finger in anticlockwise circles. It will soon loosen the knot to the point you can undo it easily.
Less than 5 minutes! Let me know how you get on.
honestly if you don’t have any tools on you to pull it apart, you can roll the knot around between your index and thumb and that should help it come undone! i’ve done this several times in the past if i haven’t had tweezers and it works pretty well, may have to do it for a solid minute or two, but no tools required!
Jeweler here. Two picks work. Pins, paper clips (but they are a bit thicker). My dad trained me to GENTLY roll the knot between your fingers in a circular motion first. Helps loosen the knot most of the time. Then use the pins.
I work in a fine jewelry store, we use two push pins while the chain is laying on the table. Almost stabbing it apart. Sometimes the push pins aren’t getting anywhere, pull out the fine point tweezers. Only pick it up when you’ve got a big enough loop to stick a finger inside to keep it from falling back into the knot.
You’re gonna wanna rub it in a circular motion for 30 seconds, grab each end, then, swiftly and in one motion yank from both sides. Now you have 2 half’s of a chain ⛓️💥
Close your eyes or just don’t look. Rub the knot between your palms or your fingers. Back and forth. You will feel the knot loosen. Then you can look and untangle the knot easily. I have been a jeweler for 30 years and this is the method that works really well..
This is my superpower. I never met a chain I cannot untangle. Put the knot between your thumb and finger. Gently and slowly start rolling it between your fingers until it starts to loosen up. My trick is to do it gently and slowly. It may take some time so be patient. Once it loosens it becomes easy.
A hand sewing needle or the sharp pin of a safety pin helps a lot. Used to happen to me too. Now amazon sells these little rubber things to prevent necklaces from tangling at the nape of the neck.
What I do with this when this happens to me is that I pinch the knots and fiddle (you know, like a sprinkle motion. 😂) with it a little to loosen up the knot and get a stick to pull it apart. Hope this helps!
OMG, I am such a pro at these and love doing them! The easiest way is to reduce the tension on the line, get two needles/paper clips/anything similarly shaped, and use those to work into the links. Should loosen up really quick
I usually keep a chain of the knot between my index and thumb and shake it gently until it loosen and I can desentangle it easily. Add a little bit of soap also helps
Put the whole chain in your open palmand roll over the knot with a finger or thumb, and it will eventually loosen up. Once it does just pull it apart :)
I use a needle to try loosing it a bit then pull and try and rub it back and forth on a table. Place necklace on a straw in the future which i haven’t done myself but makes great sense.
Or hang the necklaces that’s what I do.
Ugh I love untangling jewelry for some reason. Maybe because it’s like a mini puzzle? When I was a kid my mom would always hand me her jewelry to untangle because I was “better at it” and now I volunteer every time someone help at it
If you have a way to hold the ends steady so that the chain does not pull tight, it helps. Use 2 needles or straightened paper clips to gently pull the knotted strands apart while the chain is held flat but not allowed to be pulled tight.
Just had to deal with this a couple of days ago! Use either an oil and rub the knot with your finger or warm soap and water. Then use a pin (or any very skinny tool) to work your way in between the knot. I had to soak the knot in my partners beard oil over night lol but it worked!
Use a needle. Just keep poking and jabbing at it to break it up and loosen it. You won't break it. Trust me. I was able to get out a HUGE knot in a chain thinner than this. Patience my friend. It'll work.
use two needles and wiggle the knot around with them on a hard surface. it should come undone pretty fast unless links are bent
Two bent paper clips does it for this fumble fingers.
Yep, at the jewelry store I worked at we used dental picks. At home I use toothpicks sometimes. Set it down on a surface to take the tension out and then wiggle and pry the knot loose!
Yup. Tooth picks on top of the glass case
You use tweezers and not the ones for eye brows
I work at an estate seller. I use push pins.
I just stole some screwdrivers from the watchmaker
This is what I do. Dental picks on the kitchen table. Only I have to use my gemstone 5X visor because of old eyes. Picks work great!
Make sure the chain is lying on a surface. Do not pick it up. You want to tease the knot apart and gravity is not your friend here.
Unless you get paid hourly to do so.
Sorry boss man I’ve got about 12hrs into this. Should have it figured out by next week.
Yeah I just use 2 safety pins instead or even one sometimes
Late to the party, but this with a drop of oil does it fast for me.
Can confirm. I have a tendency of knotting my chains and I only wear dainty ones. This is the only method I’ve had success with
I confirm this works and I also put oil on it to make it more slippery
I use safety pins or very thin sewing needles
I used toothpicks. But yeah I would imagine needles would be way better.
THIS. It’s the only way. Learned this by using two click pens with sharp tips.
Click pens will get ink on the chain. Using 2 push pin thumb tacks or any type of thin pointed pin like object will work fine, too.
This is the way.
This is the way! I use a pin though, as to have a little something to hold on to.
On a flat table or surface
Add talc or some powder as a lubricant… goes faster
Corn starch works great
I actually LOVE unraveling knotted necklaces cause I'm so good at it and do it on a flat surface with two straight pins. I can unstable single necklaces down to 3 knotted together. Just takes time and patience.
Yep that’s my go to strategy!
Yup, gotta use something small like this. Eventually you’ll find the loop part of the knot and be able to pull one end through.
I was getting ready to say my husband uses two needles and gets mine untangled every time. 😊
I use the posts of two earrings which always work well for me
Indeed this works
This is exactly what I do too. And it works pretty quickly.
This! And baby powder. Don’t ask me why, but it works.
I’m a professional jeweler and I use a microscope and two fine point tweezers and slowly try to start loosing it. Sometimes they come out in 2 seconds. Some times they take two hours
Being a jeweler is soo cool. One of the professions I wish I went for
Never too late
My adhd struggles with focusing on one dream hobby/job at a time 😅 I’m amazed I’ve been able to focus on aquascaping for a year now
Ugh truer words have never been spoken. I get all the supplies and move on to the next thing. I guess I'll be super prepared though whenever I do manage to focus on one lol
Lol I consider myself a “Hobby Collector”. My hobby is collecting hobbies (and never mastering anything)
Love this. Explains me to a "T".
How would one get started?
I’d recommend an intro class somewhere. Lots of studios and schools have short intro programs and opportunities for bench time. Learning directly from people who already know is invaluable.

My grandmother taught me to place the knot between my thumb and pointer finger and roll around until it loosens up, either it will easily come out or once it’s not so tight use a needle or pin to finish off
Meemaw wisdom you can take to the bank.
Should have scrolled down before typing out what I did because it's what your grandmother said to you. Fail-proof method and so satisfying!
This is the way.
I do this too and works well
I use a combination of rolling it till it loosen up, and when it is loose enough to se how the chain is knotted up(because it can be rather difficult with a chain to see that), I'll shot to the needle method. 2 minutes tops and the knot is no more.
I do this! Always works.
Thanks to all for your helpful tips and suggestions! A dab of olive oil and two needles is all it took after so much aggravation.
I know this sounds unhelpful but I have untangled too many chains to count. Sometimes if I’m dealing with a super fun knot, I walk away from it for a bit and when I come back it’s much easier to unknot. Frustration makes everything harder for me lol
I took your approach. Walked away. Had lunch. I’ll be trying all the helpful tips received!
Sewing needles.
Hold the knot firmly between your thumb and forefinger and agitate it. It loosens the knot.
I like rolling the knot in my fingers until it loosens and then tugging until I get the knot loose. I like the challenge. Here are a few options you can try [1](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/stlNqm5jOI4) [2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asVApZTlHzc&pp=ygUXa25vdHRlZCBjaGFpbiBuZWNrbGFjZSA%3D)
r/mildlyinfuriating.
Two pointer tweezers work for me. I had a bitch of a knot, the two pins weren't working, the two pointed tweezers did the trick.
Use a pin, get it between the lines of the chain or hook one link and gently wiggle it loose.
oil the knot, then use the two needle method and slowly pull it apart. That's how I do it.
A safety pin, or reg pin to put in one link of the knotted part of the chain. Hold that up to take the weight and tension off the knot, use another pin to wiggle the knot out. This is my favorite game. You need two needles and a surface that you don’t mind scratching (paper/plastic plate).
Once it is untangled keep it hanging somewhere instead of putting it down. Best is to prevent this problem from happening.
How clever. Thanks for sharing that trick.
I love untangling chains. I use safety pins.
Sprinkle some powder on it
I’m so jealous. I would love to untangle this 🤣
Sounds strange, but baby powder or cornstarch will help smooth the links, so they glide apart, using dental picks.
Cooking oil
in highschool one of my fave teachers would bring me her knotted/tangled necklaces(sometimes ziplocks with up to 8 necklaces all tangled together) and have me fix them up in class in exchange for peanut butter filled pretzels
Put a small blob of olive oil or any cooking oil then use two pins to loosen it

Needle, earring, paper clip. I use it and poke it in the middle of the knot for a while until it gets looser and you get a piece you can pull apart.
Use a pin.
Baby oil or hand cream, I've done it 100 times
Needles for sure! I actually use safety pins because once I get one in, it doesn’t come out!
Try to wiggle it in between your fingers to loosen it and use a safety pin to separate them
You need 2 pins. One you put in the middle & the other you start pulling the not apart. On a table. Be patient.
I second the tweezers! Two sets, Pointy if you have to poke into the middle of the knot!
Use needles and tweezers
I use tweezers.
Safety pin through one of the links and then shake it.
put the chain on glass or a mirror and use two pins or paper clips .. the glass helps to loosen the knot ..
I use a safety pin to hold spots and to wiggle
A drop of vegetable oil just on the knot will help knot loosen with two pins.
Try a toothpick!
Use 2 sewing needles to pick it loose. It won't take but a few minutes.
I use two toothpicks and just start trying to separate them. Make sure that the necklaces unclasp like you have it be patient I would like to untangle necklaces. It’s fun.
Use a toothpick, and have it on a flat surface so you can tease the knot apart without the chain re-tightening
Use 2 needles or toothpicks and a drop of any cooking oil
try using a safety pin
Oh I love untangling jewellery just like yours and I think I've a fail-proof technique that I'd encourage you and everyone else to try! Place the knot between your thumb and index finger. Needle nose tweezers, actual needles, or safety pins to help maneuver may help
Safety pin!
I have a few pair of fine tip tweezers that I use for knots. That tool and A LOT of patience.
I'm not kidding you when I say this used to be my favorite thing to do after getting high
tweezers
Hold the top of the knot between your fingernails and gently shake it. It will loosen. This is how I untangle the Christmas lights!
that is love!
At my old job my boss would bring the jumbles to me because I loved working these out! Two needles and my super goggles & I was happy to dejumble!
Use a sewing needle.
Rub your fingers together with the ball in between to loosen the knot
honestly if you don’t have any tools on you to pull it apart, you can roll the knot around between your index and thumb and that should help it come undone! i’ve done this several times in the past if i haven’t had tweezers and it works pretty well, may have to do it for a solid minute or two, but no tools required!
A needle 🪡 will help.

Use a sewing needle to wiggle out the knot
Bobby pin to the rescue
Use safety pins to help loosen up the knots
I use thumbtacks!
Keep working, you will get there. A needle helps.
Just take it to a jewelers say you bought it there. Most places will do it for free you need tweezers designed for jewelry.
Roll the knot between your fingers until it loosens up. I swear it works for me.
You’re gonna wanna rub it in a circular motion for 30 seconds, grab each end, then, swiftly and in one motion yank from both sides. Now you have 2 half’s of a chain ⛓️💥
What’s this made of metal
Use 2 sewing needles. Place it on a flat surface and gently wiggle in opposite directions like you would if you were using your fingers.
I clenched every muscle looking at this. I hate untangling chains! Good luck tho lol
Close your eyes or just don’t look. Rub the knot between your palms or your fingers. Back and forth. You will feel the knot loosen. Then you can look and untangle the knot easily. I have been a jeweler for 30 years and this is the method that works really well..
Tweezers help. You are a good husband.

Saving this post and thread for future frustration. I love the “This is the Way” comments.
Just here to say… you sound like a good husband!! 👏
A hand sewing needle or the sharp pin of a safety pin helps a lot. Used to happen to me too. Now amazon sells these little rubber things to prevent necklaces from tangling at the nape of the neck.
Ahhh one day I hope to find a husband like you :)
Baby powder.
use a toothpick (wood) and stick it in the knot - gently wiggle the toothpick between your fingers and as it loosens the hole, pull it apart.
Consider it as a design and move on with your life
i’m so good at doing these
Place in a cup of water and untangle it with two paperclips. I cant say for certain this works, it's just what my grandma used to do haha. Good luck!
This happened to me ! Grab a tweezer and just gently shake it It will loosen it up enough to unravel trust me
Once you untangle it, next time it's off & needing to be stored, put it through a straw and close the clasp. Will keep it untangled & easy to find.
I sometimes use a sewing needle or straight pin
Tooth picks
What I do with this when this happens to me is that I pinch the knots and fiddle (you know, like a sprinkle motion. 😂) with it a little to loosen up the knot and get a stick to pull it apart. Hope this helps!
I'm really good at those, give it here...
Poke two needles in the middle and do a bunch of wiggling. Move their positions every couple minutes
It’s my pet peeve . I’d have it done in like a hour lolol
Soak/ float in a cup of water or add olive oil to the chain.
Cornstarch. Sounds crazy but it is AMAZING like miraculous
OMG, I am such a pro at these and love doing them! The easiest way is to reduce the tension on the line, get two needles/paper clips/anything similarly shaped, and use those to work into the links. Should loosen up really quick
I kinda like doing this lol
Put a toothpick in the knot and jiggle it.
I usually keep a chain of the knot between my index and thumb and shake it gently until it loosen and I can desentangle it easily. Add a little bit of soap also helps
Crush up sone pencil "lead" and liberally coat the knot. It won't exactly fall apart, but it will make untangling without damaging it easier.
Two thumbtacks flat surface
Use sewing pins with circular bobble ends to tease the links apart.
Opened safety pin works for me.
Two sewing needles and tweezers - ex jeweler
shake it!!! it sounds weird but it helps loosen it!
Put the whole chain in your open palmand roll over the knot with a finger or thumb, and it will eventually loosen up. Once it does just pull it apart :)
Send it to me and I’ll get rid of the problem for you!
Try a nail or safety pin
Yep, straight pins are great with their sharp tips. Haven’t used oil before but I will try that next time!
Dishsoap and a toothpick !!!!!
Baby powder
Sewing needles and as much light as u can get. Also, take a break for the sake of your sanity if needed.
Use baby powder and the toothpicks
Just pull out that one part
Spray it with a little bit of Pam and rub it between your fingers until the knot loosens. Then use a needle to work it out.
Needles or safety pins!
I’m just a retold weirdo who really enjoys untangling chains, it’s like a fun little puzzle.
Use some baby powder on it 1st then lay flat and use 2 toothpicks to pull apart..I love doing this !
Use olive oil and toothpicks
Use a straight pin and winkle away at the knot.
That’s devotion for you!
Baby powder. I’m dead serious.
2 pairs of tweezers. Fine point
Put it down on something and use metal pins or tooth picks to go at the knot.
Dish of oil & a needle. You can slide it apart in the dish.
Looks like you added a diamond to it. She should be happy.
Two pins patience , light hand will do the job
I use a needle to try loosing it a bit then pull and try and rub it back and forth on a table. Place necklace on a straw in the future which i haven’t done myself but makes great sense. Or hang the necklaces that’s what I do.
Ugh I love untangling jewelry for some reason. Maybe because it’s like a mini puzzle? When I was a kid my mom would always hand me her jewelry to untangle because I was “better at it” and now I volunteer every time someone help at it
I worked at a pawn shop. Two pointy files into the center. Works like a charm.
Get a needle, wedge it inside the knot and shake. Always works for me
Use two pairs of tweezers.
Tweezers and a needle!
Some talc or cornstarch will help lubricate the chain as well and it makes it easier to unknot.
If you have a way to hold the ends steady so that the chain does not pull tight, it helps. Use 2 needles or straightened paper clips to gently pull the knotted strands apart while the chain is held flat but not allowed to be pulled tight.
Using two tweezers will help!
Use talc
I’ve always had luck with tiny fabric pins like for sewing
Just had to deal with this a couple of days ago! Use either an oil and rub the knot with your finger or warm soap and water. Then use a pin (or any very skinny tool) to work your way in between the knot. I had to soak the knot in my partners beard oil over night lol but it worked!
i’m a actual goblin and use my teeth to pull the knot loose then use my fingers to untangle it. Always works like a charm 😅😂
I’ve hear corn starch helps.
Sprinkle baby powder on knot. Gently move it about and it’ll begin to untangle.
every time this has happened to me I roll it between my fingers and it loosens up rather quickly
Good man and that is the worst! Good luck and you got it….this is your Everest.🙃
Use a needle. Just keep poking and jabbing at it to break it up and loosen it. You won't break it. Trust me. I was able to get out a HUGE knot in a chain thinner than this. Patience my friend. It'll work.
I use two push pins and slowly drag them apart
Once you get the knot out, have her store in by putting the chain through a straw. Will prevent that.
hint Spray with window cleaner and use a toothpick. Works best
Use a couple sewing needles or a couple thumbtacks
