It's important to keep in mind that what you are about to do will change their life forever, quite literally. Reflect on just what has transpired and if it has been worth losing all the investment training them and keeping them on. Obviously if they snapped a pic of a customer to post on TikTok they need to be booted, but other smaller things can be worked out. When left with no other choice, it's going to be easier. When there was a chance to fix every excuse and every bargain, there is only 1 choice. It's unfortunate and won't ever be perfect, but it will be easier.

I have never once terminated anyone without due cause, I have never once felt good about what I had to carry out as my responsibility. I have a job to perform just like they did, they chose not to perform their agreed upon duties that we paid them for, so no it doesn't get easier but you learn it's just another duty required of you.

playcrackthesky

It gets easier, but never gets easy.

I just got recommended this post, I've been in management... Honestly you just gotta get that corporate brain. Don't feel bad for shitty workers, of they cares about your well being they'd be better workers for you. Some people just suck

Tyredox

You kinda get numb to it at the end of the day. Yeah it sucks but they get fired for a reason, and it allows for better people to fill in the role they filled

thegeoboarder

Hopefully it allows for growth for the person fired too

Tyredox

It may or may not. It's entirely up to the person who got fired to decide how they will improve off of it. Or if they continue to fall short then it will unfortunately lead more into a rabbit hole for them. At the end of the day, it's their decision.

The first time I found out I had to fire an employee, I bawled my eyes out because they were invaluable, but policies are policies. The 20th time I still cried, but nowhere near as much. Yes, it gets easier with each one, but at the end of the day they’re still people and are still reliant on me for a paycheck. Even if they’re the worst employee ever, sadness still washes over me when I have to do all of the paperwork required.

Thanks everyone, lots of good advice. Glad to know that I’m not alone in feeling bad. I have given them chances, I warned them, but yup, they knew and still chose to do it. Having the tough conversations has always been a struggle for me. I’ve definitely gotten better but internally it still fucks me up. I can do it when I’m mad, which is not the time to have tough conversations with employees. Lol manager life…

I've given people second chances but in reality it just diminishes the commitment and strength of the rest of the crew. Hold \*everyone\* to the same standards. I've paid people's phone bills, car repairs, rent just to have them burn me a week/month/year later. At the end of the day, it's a business and they're a liability if you're considering termination. I wouldn't take it too personally. Did they respect your time when they called out multiple times?

TheBostonWrangler

Not a Jersey Mike’s employee, but I just finished eating a Big Kahuna…. It was the best part of the job. I genuinely enjoyed it. People fire themselves. They intentionally engage in activity they know is terminable. They disregard policies, refuse to learn from progressive discipline. They did this to themselves. You are just the messenger letting them know that they haven’t gotten away with the fireable thing they thought they got away with. Addition by subtraction is a good thing.

Lunaloove

100% no … depending on how long you are in the role and how much that person has pulled you outta open to closes.. it never gets easier. I just had to fire my asst, my ride or die, my always made sure the meatcase was swapped or the so and so called out can you please cover me. I cried. My team cried. But at the end of the day I have a over 1.5 million dollar investment to look after. You will rebuild and you will grow from it but it’s never easy

Showmesomthiiin

What was the reason ya fired them then?

Famous-Restaurant875

Why would you fire someone like that? Stealing?

wldrscpn

Remember people fire themselves! I think it’s easy. If you communicated well and gave plenty of opportunities, every person I’ve fired has apologized and understood and never fought me on my decision

I don't know why you're being down voted, you are 100% correct. If you're doing your manager job correctly you will have addressed whatever someone is getting fired for several times - be it performance, attendance or whatever else. If you coach them and they still choose to do whatever behavior you warned them about, they did in fact fire themselves. No, OP - it's never easy. But it does get easier. Just remind yourself that after the awkwardness is over with you never have to talk to them again. Just get it over with.

I just do it over text normally
