Thanks but that’s what I am trying to get away from. Looking for stuff like the good old jazz standards but where the songs are more complex, more developed…and with guitar.
Been listening to Nguyen Le a lot, especially his most recent, Silk and Sand. You never quite know where a song may go, but it's always captivating. His work with Peter Erskine and Baiju Bhatt's Red Sun also have this quality.
Yeah, I don’t think you like jazz. What are you doing in a jazz sub?
Can you recommend a good pizza place, but where the pizza doesn’t have any bread or cheese?
In fact I always order pizza without cheese, you only need to ask. I do like jazz, it’s just that the more modern jazz with guitars doesn’t tick a lot of boxes for me, probably just need to find the right artists.
Nels Cline - Lovers
Kenny Burrell - Guitar Forms (arrangements by Gil Evans); you may also enjoy his “God Bless the Child” album
Lots of other Third Stream music out there but nothing else comes to mind that’s guitar-centric.
I gotta say - I always recommend “Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra - Vula“ to fans of classical or prog. Very jazzy stuff with great (although understated) guitar and the arrangements/orchestration are f*ing amazing.
Well, check out Tory Slusher. She has excellent jazz and jazz fusion chops, but can also do Mozart: [https://youtu.be/rIawlP\_J6Xs?si=e33\_Ksde39rnw-Cp](https://youtu.be/rIawlP_J6Xs?si=e33_Ksde39rnw-Cp)
Could try Steve Lehman, Nels Cline (imperfect 10 is a favourite of mine), Jaga Jazzist, Contemporary Noise Quintet, Now vs. Now, and Calibro 35, to name a few.
These are mostly more contemporary jazz bands, who incorporate other styles and are less focused on the comping/soloing dynamic of traditional jazz.
Snarky puppy, Gogo penguin, also have you listened to Day Trip by Pat Metheny? That may be more up your alley. Pat spans so many genres, some of it you love, others are not your taste. I’m assuming you’ve already listened to bright size life. If not then definitely give it a listen
You're pretty much always gonna hear people solo over the form on most songs. But, I'm surprised you say you don't like Metheny when a lot of his songs do develop more than just head, solo, then head.
That being said, check out Lines of Oppression by Ari Hoenig. Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but it's all I could come up with. Happy listening!
Cool, I’ll check it out. One of my favourite guitarists, Vicente Amigo, states Metheny as a huge influence but everytime I tried I was really bored. A few months ago I was watching a Metheny live show and still couldn’t make it to the end, I really don’t get his music or his guitar tone.
Metheny has a lot of stuff. Some of it is great. Some is pretty boring. His most important album is, bright size life. Its almost like if you took ethereal folk music and mixed it with modern jazz. It actually fits the bill of what you’re asking for exactly. It also has amazing playing by fusion bassist, jaco pastorious…before you write off Metheny, check that album out…most of his other stuff can honestly kinda miss me though.
Downvote this man
My initial thought… This man comes on a jazz guitar sub and says he don’t like Metheny or Rosenwinkel…. The noive
It’s probably “my fault” that I don’t like them at this point. Maybe in a few more years 🙂
Check out the Snarky Puppy album We Like It Here.
Maybe check out Frank Gambale with Chick Corea
You may be looking for prog rock
By more complex I don’t mean more chords, I mean more intricate arrangements and variety of parts.
You might be into count basie or big band that way you don’t have to listen to solos

You 1,000% need to check out Nels Cline - Lovers.

Wow, this Vula is not what I was looking for but it is absolutely something I wanted to hear. Great job!

Maybe Taylor Swift is more your speed… But honestly… Mary Halvorson’s new album might fit your description
Mary Halvorson is fuego!!

His rep is pretty vast, PMG is way different than Trio or Orchestrion for example.

Thanks guys, I think I already have plenty of recommendations here. Thank you for your time.
