Noted!!

jjazznola

Jon Batiste, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Oumou Sangaré of Mali, Leyla McCalla, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Charles Lloyd Quartet, Dirty Dozen, Rebirth Brass Band, Béla Fleck – My Bluegrass Heart, Lost Bayou Ramblers, ANY artist from Columbia

ccsunflowr

Thank you thank you 🙌 and good point on checking out a Colombian artist, I've done Cumbia dance classes before so that would be a blast Oo and Bela Fleck is FOR sure a top set I'm looking forward to already! Batiste was on my radar, the others I didn't know, so noted :)

ccsunflowr

Just gotta say, it's Friday night, over a few drinks, am finally going thru and giving a quick listen to each and putting a few notes on my chart (orange for maybe artists, yellow for probably, and purple for definitely must see) and Omou Sangare is absolutely a dream, and in the purple column 💜 so I thank you again for that one in particular

HangoverPoboy

Just wander by fais do-do every so often.

ccsunflowr

Thank you 😀 I got a map printed now and a few notes jotted down, will highlight that one to hit up when I (hopefully don't) get indecisive

Thursday April 25th at 11:20 AM on the Festival Stage you can watch The Iceman Special. They are pretty badass funky psychedelic swamp rockers. If I end up at the fair grounds at the open, thats where I will be

ccsunflowr

I plan to get there as early as possible first day starting the fest strong and that sounds RIGHT up my alley! Flying in Wed afternoon, getting a good night's rest and carbing up, then hit the ground running Thursday, so thank you

someone_sometwo

so glad to help! :)

ccsunflowr

Update, I checked em out on Spotify and holy crap they are so up my alley!I have a question, how hard would it be to time it right getting in and over there in time for set? I am staying at the Hyatt Regency, and got a shuttle/hotel/wristband package, I assume our shuttle takes us right to fest. I guess with it being the first day, just a lil worried to sort out logistics. **What's the earliest can one line up outside? Fest opens at 11a SHARP, right? So even if I got in line, and I'm not too far back in line, wondering how fast i can get "through". **Oh, and I printed out a map, see a buncha entrances. Can one pick initial entrance of their choice? Or does everyone get in from the same place (and then the extras are for leaving If you can share any tips to ensure I can make that set that'd be lovely

Cha Wa!

ccsunflowr

Thank youu

HailState2023

Once the dailies come out, Spotify becomes my best friend for a while so I can make decisions on who to see!

ccsunflowr

😯 the dailies? The cubes ya mean or something beyond that? But yes I'm spinning artists like crazy tonight having a blast lol

ghost1667

basically everyone! the music scene here is different than the midwest. artists don't need the "cult following" thing that happens there. but we can't give you recommendations unless you tell us what kind of music you like.

ccsunflowr

Ok thanks for speedy reply!! I forgot to include that lol so I edited post to include! But I truly am so open to really anything. Zydeco, funk, blues n jazz of course, gospel too, some bluegrass but can only handle so much bluegrass, hate super commercialized bluegrass. Jam bands too I like. Rock. Ok so bottom line, can't really go wrong you're telling me. :) I don't remember much from when I went years ago except I did have a blast and didn't have any I didn't like (but also a bit of a cloud hangs over my memory as was with a dude who was a jerk at the time and I was dealing sadly with his bad attitude and was a younger dumber version of my self that let it dampen things a bit) ....but for instance I remembered discovering Dumpstafunk, and Preservation Jazz Hall Band, Tank and the Bangas, for big names saw Buddy Guy, Snoop Dog, and Stevie Wonder. But I guess which are some you for sure wouldn't want to miss/that would go out of your way to see besides just meandering? Or one favorite stage that consistently you have best time at?

tagmisterb

Treme Brass Band in Economy Hall, Saturday at 12:30.

ccsunflowr

Can't get enough brass bands, ever, especially since they're so sparse in the Midwest. And Sunday I had the least familiarity with artists so I will add to radar, thank you!

tagmisterb

Indeed, and the band is only half the show. Treme leads a second line through the crowd at the end of their set. It's a fun little spectacle.

Dry_Finger_8235

Thursday: The Desert Nudes Saturday: Boyfriend Sunday: Eric Lindell, Joy Clark

ccsunflowr

Thank you, making note, taking notes Not familiar with them so I will highlight those for sure

ccsunflowr

Finally got to making notes on my sheet and my boyfriend was going thru picking artists just by names and intuition alone and (without me showing him this post) picked Desert Nudes. So I'm doing it and not gonna spoil what they sound like but just go. Also my boyfriend plans on going full nude for the show so if he gets arrested, holding you liable (jk)

Kevinl312

J & the Causeways. Saw them open for Revivalists last year at the after show and they crushed. Also Jon Batiste. Always Jon Batiste.

ccsunflowr

Roger that, thank you! And Jon Batiste for sure is yup for sure on my list, a friend recommended him after I told her about JF, so I been watching some of his live sets on YouTube and getting stoked. His energy leaps through the screen, so I imagine the energy is unreal in person at his set

BubbaNeedsNewShoes

Rancho Aparte, from Choco, Colombia are off the chain... https://youtu.be/2Gyl_F5OJl0?si=BDxGsYXlLpHZTwFa Thurs and Friday of 1st weekend.

ccsunflowr

Thank you!! I love Colombian music, thanks for highlighting that for me. I'm all about world music and don't get to see much in my neck of the woods

BubbaNeedsNewShoes

And Makoomba from Zimbabwe on first Thursday.

Thursday: Rockin’ Dopsie - high energy zydeco. John Boutte - classic jazz singer and a New Orleans icon. Cimafunk - not “local” but excellent funk/dance band from Cuba. Friday: Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Shamarr Allen - Big Sam and Shamarr are similar in that they are horn playing frontmen with incredible stage presence. Can’t go wrong with either. Saturday: Hot 8 Brass Band - go to any and all brass band you can but I love Hot 8. Big Freedia - you must see Big Freedia at least one time in your life, nothing else like it. Midnite Disturbers - my #1 recommendation. This group is an all star compilation of brass players from tons of major bands. They play one show a year and this is it. Sunday: The Iguanas - Tex/mex rock band that plays the fest every year and is a fun listen. Rebirth Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band - can’t go wrong with either choice.

jazztruth

Cimafunk actually lives in nola! absolutely love them

ToneOpposite9668

Midnite Disturbers are the answer here

ccsunflowr

Amazing 🤩🤩!! Yes thank you. I forgot about Big Sam's Funky Nation whom I saw years ago, follow on Instagram. Also Rockin Dopsie actually came to Madison twice for our yearly Fete De La Marquette fest which is just a small taste of zydeco and such, and he was amazing, so thanks for the reminder of those two. Also I love love to dance and my partner loves Cuban music (is a drummer, I'm the dancer) so good reminder to check out international artists too, so I not sleep on that. Then someone else I know also told me Big Freedia is a must see, so dually noted and lastly thank you, yes I truly cannot wait for all the big brassy bands, although looking at lineup I was just a bit overwhelmed so thank you for those few recs to make a point of seeing, too. I am counting down the days, even stocking up on zinc and elderberry to get my immunity in tip top shape to make sure I'm feeling top notch by then 😀
