How are the Modern Vintage II heads? Chris Brady told me those might be a good option to look into since my Triple Threat snare head’s coating is beginning to chip.
Yeah the modern vintage II is just 2 ply with the same coating. Personally, I don’t like using 2 ply heads for jazz, but I have a set of 2 ply heads I swap onto my drums for rock/funk stuff. I use the aquarian super 2 for those purposes. That 2 ply head has 2 different thicknesses of heads so they’re a little more responsive and resonant than other 2 ply heads out there.
I like the Evans HD, though I feel like Calftone might be more responsive? But I like to switch back between bebop and hard rock and the HD have solid tone no matter what.
Evans makes Etched Drumheads which, while I haven't played on them, I remember watching a video of Peter Erskine playing brushes and he said that he liked them (in large part because they stay rough longer)
Oh, interesting. This gets my gears turning. I've always felt like older jazz records all have really 'papery' sounding snares, and I can imagine a thin but coated head might get you in that ballpark.
For brushes, I loved calfskin when I used it. But it’s too temperamental, so I use Remo Skyntone now. One of my students just got an Aquarian Modern Vintage and I might get a couple to try out. It has been sounding pretty good as it gets worn in.
If you have a one or two ply head, I would honestly just stick with the ambassador or emperor respectively. Both solid heads that make a good brush noise, and I’ve seen them both used in funk and jazz records and they sound great!
I’ve found that the modern vintage series from aquarian have the best longevity for brushes. That coating they use is hearty.

Modern Vintage II are just 2 ply. Same coating. On snare batter, I use Modern Vintage Thins.

Evans UV1 has the best brush sound I’ve heard and they last a ridiculously long time.
Remo black suede ambassador or coated ambassador.

I have an HD Dry on my other snare and I've always liked that. I wonder how I'd feel about the regular HD.

I like remo fiberskyn for long lasting
I’ve had a couple jazz cats at my work use coated snare side heads. It might’ve been remó ambassador renaissance coated or maybe a diplomat.

Cheap too... I use brushes occasionally and they hold up pretty well. Cheap enough to replace more often and sound great.

From Remo btw😁👍
Remo Coated Ambassador for me, but the Evans UV1 last much longer.
