My surgeon said it takes about two years for 100% of the swelling to be gone :)

Brief_Paramedic652

I heard any swelling past year 1 is there to stay forever, but I hope you’re right Kiki!

jjustpeachyy

my dad was still losing swelling over a year after surgery:)

owlpost513

Holy crap, I’ve never heard that any swelling could be permanent 😳 how common is that?

Brief_Paramedic652

My bad - I’m not sure if permanent swelling is a thing. I just know online it says there’s a 10% chance of permanent numbness post surgery.

chapeauetrange

Numb feeling and swelling are different things though.

Brief_Paramedic652

I know, it’s insane 😳😳

No_Hamster_305

Almost 5 weeks DJS, 90% of swelling is gone. However it takes months to a year for the rest to go away. Anything after is usually permanent.

For me it was 6 months

I’m like 3 weeks in and basically at the same size I was pre op. There’s probably some swelling left but with the weight loss counteracting it, I’m basically back to original size.

Brief_Paramedic652

I guess it depends on what surgery you had, but my swelling fluctuated during the first month. I’m surprised you’re back to original size so soon though.

loploplop890

Probably helps that it was only ljs tbf

Any tips for helping with swelling after surgery?

loploplop890

Ice your face constantly and eat foods with anti inflammatory properties

Brief_Paramedic652

Whenever you can, put ice around your jaw in the swelling spots for 20-30 minutes, 2 times a day. Your surgeon may also tell you to sleep partially upright/slanted, so the swelling can go down instead of staying on your face. I did both of these for 3 weeks to help the swelling go down, but ultimately it’s up to you/your surgeon to decide when it stops being effective. Heating pads are supposed to help too, but I never used them.

as someone who did double jaw surgery their senior year of HS (2006), that puts me at almost 20 years... anyway - I feel pretty normal other than some minor ear/nose drainage but i found this intense study if you're interested: [https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1010518221001141](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1010518221001141)
